    "6 Underground" is a song by the English band Sneaker Pimps, from their debut studio album Becoming X.
    First released as a single in the United Kingdom in September 1996, the song reached number 15 on the UK Singles Chart[1] and had moderate radio airplay in the United States. It was shipped to modern rock and dance stations in February 1997.[2] After the song was used in the 1997 American film The Saint, radio stations began playing it more frequently; many stations continue to keep the song in their playlists. The single was re-released in May 1997, where it peaked at number 9 on the UK Singles Chart.[3] In the United States, the song peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 7 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The cover artwork of the single uses a photograph of a Lego Space moonscape. The piece is from the Command Centre playset marketed by The Lego Group from 1978 to 1988.
    After the commercial success and popularity of the album version of the song, the group released several remixes, some of which became hits in dance clubs and radio stations with a dance format. The version most frequently heard on radio was the remix by Nellee Hooper (which appeared as a hidden track on the album).

    This is definitely a slow burner and a mood so it's great for a chill playlist. This group rode the trip-hop wave that was happening at the time and this was their biggest hit. I would check out Portishead and Massive Attack - they were the pioneers. Since you're doing a Madonna journey, you should check them out because she was inspired by them in the mid 90s and worked with Massive Attack on a song.

    The deejay behind Sneaker Pimps is also the deejay for M People.

    If I recall correctly the dudes on the band didn't want to be another indie band with a female vocalist and fired her. Years later, the only song anyone remembers is this one showcasing her. Talk about a band cutting off its nose to spite its face.

    Smooooth… I had this album in the 90s. Sneaker Pimps were a cool band, never as important as other more seminal and influential trip-hop cool loungey 90s acts like the intricate Portishead, the outsider genius of Tricky or the OG pure dark heaven of Massive Attack. But this is a cool chill track, and such a deep 90s video! The neurotic top knot hair, steel blue colour grading and high contrast blown out lighting could be from no other era!

    Of course, I had the CD and loved every minute of it but I wanted to find out what happened to them in a friend told me… They used to fight on stage like cats and dogs and finally broke up. Yes, Empress darling, on stage in front of everybody! It just couldn’t last…

    Alternative radio masterpiece. Other groups in this same "weird 90's" space are Luscious Jackson, Soul Coughing, Lofidelity Allstars, Forest for the Trees, and Curve.

    This was not a huge hit. I'm pretty sure it never played on our pop station. The only way I know it is MTV played it on their alternate channel, where they played mostly underground hits. Songs doing well but not well enough to be in the top 40.

    • @FindingMadonna
      @FindingMadonna 2 роки тому +2

      It wasn't huge but it was a decent sized hit considering it was trip-hop - the song got lots of alternative radio play and was maybe the biggest trip-hop hit in the US ever (Top 50 on the Hot 100).
