Thanks for posting this! I loved my Father very much and it's great to see him at his best and doing what he loved most. He was a brilliant man and I'm proud to be his daughter.
I had the pleasure of hearing Dick 4 or 5 times per year, from 1981 - 1986, when I was a medical student and intern in New York. Every evening was a delight, and a completely unique experience. It came as such a shock when I heard of his passing, which, by strange coincidence, happened just down the street from where I went to college. I had just moved to LA, the previous year. Had I known that he was playing in Palo Alto, I would have figured out a way to get there.
Your father was a genius player.I’m a New Zealander and I’ve been listening to his records for years - so his music has spread all around the world. You can be very proud.
If you are his daughter, you have much to be proud of. I became a Wellstood fan the first time I heard him in the early 90s, unfortunately after he was gone. A truly under-appreciated genius. He could do it all -- Ragtime to bop. Do you happen to know if South Amboy Express is his composition? Lullaby of Birdland is sensational.
Some will consider the stride school of piano playing to be 'old hat' but it produced some fine two handed piano players who didn't need bass or drums, starting with James P Johnson, Fats Waller, Wilie the Lion Smith, then right through to Ralph Sutton and Dick Wellstood. Dick was one of the best as can be seen here, and one of the most under-rated too!
@ironwallful You can order a few albums at Amazon. I got "this is the one" and "live at the sticky". "This is the one" has many grand versions of classic stride songs such as Carolina shout, If dreams come true, Vipers and an incredible version on the "The mule walk".
@mleeannwellstood Perhaps you know what CD contains these songs that I heard him do. "Take me out to the ball game", "Bill Bailey" and "Battle Hymn Of The Republic"?
Dick Wellstood-Ragtime Piano Favorites-“Take me out to the Ballgame- WOW! Thanks for that-I’d not heard it for years! My Dad on top of his game! Every bit of it “Wellstood!”
KingRat355-It’s been 10 years since this post! I haven’t seen this until today, Oct 5, 2020! I don’t recall having that username either! Anyway, I Love fans of my Father! I’ve given the album you ask in the last post. In case you missed it; Dick Wellstood-Ragtime Piano Favorites
