Ah, Blossom, many have found you late in life, many after you left us. Yet, that’s the point, artistry and talent like yours never dies, lives forever. You gifted us forever.
This is a very complex melody and she does it so well and yet without any seeming effort. Exquisite voicings in her accompaniment too. Brava, as always for Blossom!
We talked with this amazingly talented lady in a T V show dressing room. My piano colleague was a real great, and told her in loving tribute that her own accompaniment to her singing was faultless, sweet, appropriate. She was such an open and honest darling of art, with a touch unique, a taste sublime, a sense of the ridiculously honest state of it.
Blossom is a jazz treasure, a giant. I love her feeling, her phrasing, both vocally and with her tasteful, swinging piano playing. Thank you for posting!
One credited, Irving Mills, was Duke's agent, who cut himself in for royalties, but probably had nothing to do with the lyrics. You'll see his name on a lot of Duke's music.
sophisticated lady she sure was.there was never anybody like her.saw her in the 60s at ronnies.she had the audience in stiches with im hip.knocks me out to this day.a true musical great.many thanks.
I spent most of my life in Chicago, so I mostly fell in love with Blossom through her recordings. I heard he live only once, in a small club on a visit to New York. I shall never forget it. She is, indeed, a unique treasure.
I know this is late but I was a Chicago boy too tho lived in CA as an adult. Saw her a couple of times in San Francisco and Palo Alto but I also saw her once on a trip home at Jazz Showcase when it was in a hotel - I think the Sheraton Blackstone. My folks are gone now but they would have known. They were big jazz fans and loved Blossom.
She is such an inspiration to me, now that I've decided to start singing/recording later in life...such elegant grace and depth of feeling--just love her. 💕❤️
What is hard to do made to appear simple. Solo performances with perfection, I think Blossom and Laura Nyro mirror each other, both sadly gone. Being able to listen and sometimes view is wonderful. Other people's comments prove the admiration she deserves.
I wish performance dates were routinely shown with video descriptions. Blossom Dearie was unique-gifted and heartful. You would think someone would at least try to take her place.
Jim Lowe Thank you for this beautiful video of one of the greats in jazz interpretation. I only wish I knew the when and where of this performance. Blossom Dearie, a class act.
Her live solo rendition of 'Lush Life' by Billy Strayhorn is also so beautiful in its pathos. Blossom comments that the song is so difficult, that it took her 11 years to learn to sing and play it.
The best description I've heard; "Her voice barely reaches the second floor of a dollhouse." (That was NOT a criticism... but rather, an affectionate description.) Sorry I can't remember who said it.

The most beautiful rendition ever! Perfect delivery.
This is a very complex melody and she does it so well and yet without any seeming effort. Exquisite voicings in her accompaniment too. Brava, as always for Blossom!
succinct well crafted comment!
1,000,000% agree!!!
1:39 such a talented yet unassuming ,consummate musician,rest peacefully.❤
It's as complex as conversation, because that's what it sounds like. It's like lounge chat, masterfully captured in melody.
Can't be in a rush with this one. You are essentially growing an orchid in your hand. Blossom could take me in hers any time.
So beautifully said...
Only Peggy Lee can match such quality with such low volumes!

Yes, an enormous talent and so understated and sophisticated. I, too, miss her greatly. Saw her many times in the back room of the Ballroom in NYC.
It is from a concert in Cork, Ireland in 1983

Good point. Many jazz artists used to do this routinely, e.g. Oscar Peterson and others.
she really understood this great tune.
Grace, control, subtlety.
The deepest meaning with the lightest touch - Blossom was a giant, for all her demure manner and small stature.
Absolutely, she's the essence of class and hip cooool, with breasts, lol 😉 😆

Blossom can convey the story of the Sophisticated Lady with sympathy and understanding. She also brings a hint of hope into this melancholy song.

I like her feel
I saw her at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia years ago.
NICE!
Songs like these, deserve a cigarette and a calm night.
la classe pure
Back at a time when people knew know to listen to truly great stuff. That line coming out of the bridge is a bitch. Of course she nails it.
it sounds like blossoming flowers.

no wonder Diana Krall idolized her!
