I prefer the puck-sized tamper. I got the Normcore distributor & tamper 2-in-1 puck, and also the WDT v3 tool (it's pretty new). I use these two tools every day. So while not cheap, I do get very good results, mainly very consistent. I am sure that there is better out there but this is just fine for what I need.
I do agree that Normcore offers great value for money. I got spring loaded tamper (58 and 51mm) palm tamper and leveler and like them all. As for WDT I had home made one until I bought Kafatek MC5 with WDT in the box.
I think the palm style tamper is great when it is used with a bottomless portafilters. However, when it is used with a double spouts portafilter. Our power from upper body is too much, and it would be difficult to balance the portafilter, unless there is station for the the portafilter
Such a refreshing change from the many coffee snobs on UA-cam - great content Jack! Interesting comparison and would definitely be interesting to see if you used all the best practices to prep the coffee, does a different type of tamper change anything?
I got the flat one in puck size. I like the handling. But I wonder if there is a pro or con in the mechanics. The puck-size-one works that you push the silver metal into the coffee until the black metal hits the top the filter. The other one (V4) works in the opposite way. The black metal is at the top of the filter and then you push the the tamper into the coffee.
I think with your normal (WDT) prep or doing the test 3x on each might be better but I doubt there's really any difference. I think it more depends on your preferences. For some reason I like the ones that look like a more traditional tamper (better to pickup and grip maybe?). I had a Asso the Jack leveler (whatever it was called) that was super heavy and slippery easy to drop so maybe that's why.
You are right. This video was more about showing different tampers from Normcore. The taste test was just for fun. Otherwise, like you said, I would have to do multiple samples and blind tasting.
Cheers Jack! What a coincidence, I am receiving my DE1 today, and I'll test between the Normcore regular and palm tampers - by mistake as I unsuccessfully tried to cancel my palm tamper order when the regular went back in stock. Which tamper do you prefer for workflow and aesthetics? I imagine they do exactly the same thing, so it comes down to what you like. Thanks!
Thank you for watching. I would be happy with any of them. Spring tamper put some extra pressure on my bad elbow, palm tamper on my bad wrist. I think palm tamper is fraction faster when comes to work flow.
Haven’t tried it yet. I think I have seen the video about tamping pressure. They did very extensive research and the conclusion was that there are no significant difference between 15-25-30 pressure
What version of the Normcore do you have, version 3 or 4? How is the fit on the pavoni? I was thinking of getting one for my Europiccola. My even cheaper self leveling one I have is maybe a touch too small.
Hello Jack! Another great episode; very informative Normcore take. I always appreciate your smile and your honesty. You’re an amazing host!
Thank you very much!

You might be right on that. I only have naked portafilters so can’t check for sure. I have moved to Force Tamper now.

Not sure tbh. Right now I prefer the palm tamper. It seems to give more even tamping
Dear God. The HDR is so bright, I think I've burnt my eyes......
Yeah it was a very sunny day

Hello , did you try to change the spring , maybe it's interesting to test different spring 30 ,15 pound

@@mycoffeeshow111 you should try if you see a difference between the different spring
@@yandeslongchamps I am wondering if the only thing that will affect is time of extraction.
@@mycoffeeshow111 would love to watch you discover it!
@@yandeslongchamps I will have to do it then. Btw 2 new toys are coming to the channel- will upload the videos next week.

I think is v4 and is definitely more precise than the included La Pavoni tamper. I use it every day and works well
