I saw him live a few days ago at an outdoor venue- the voice- the same now as then. He’s 77 or near it and his voice is super powerful. It was very impressive. If you get a chance to see him live- I hope you go!
The Guess Who not only made a lot of great hit songs, but their albums were superb too! It is pathetic that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
You are right! Why aren't they in the RaRHoF? On the other hand, we should not have any respect for RaRHoF, once about more than 20 yrs. ago they have inducted the band of Bruce Springsteen (only his band), while there have been a long waiting line of real stars and talents. No respect for RaRHoF!!!!
A great Canadian singer and songwriter. This is such a wonderful performance. I saw Burton Cummings 4 times live and met him. The Guess Who are awesome. Cheers! ✌️🇨🇦
Yes, awesome tune. I always check the date when these songs were on the show an I was born in 74 but almost exactly 4 months later but on July 25th. An you prolly would’ve baby sat my snot nose bratty ass! 😂 jk PEACE!
What an amazing voice he had. You never realize exactly how great his range was until you start trying to sing some of the stuff he sang yourself. Trust me, you won’t be able to reach the notes…if you’re a guy. And he sang them in full voice! He was an unbelievable singer.
It has amazed me all my life how anyone can play an instrument, any instrument and sing at the same time. I would totally screw it up. Burton, Randy and so many other are masters at their crafts.
Back home from Viet Nam too find out my first love had found @ guy. Then this song.Wow, killer lyrics. Mr Cummings allowed me to move on and stay whole. Thanks so much MS for saving these very ' special' performances..
Every Friday my 5th grade teacher let a student bring in an album to play during art class. Someone brought in their sister's The Guess Who & that day I dropped The Partridge Family and went full on to The Guess Who.
Are you saying you don't like resentful, self-righteous lyrics, AI electronic music (without any Musicians) with naked stripper pole dancers air' gyrating all over the stage with a blinding light show that causes seizures and migraines? If so, I👍🏻agree with you.
Aussie Gen Xer here. I was too young to remember The Guess Who, but I remember Stand Tall, which was a huge hit here. Have been going down a UA-cam Cummings rabbit hole this week and am thoroughly enjoying finding out more about his amazing musical ability 😊
They played at a tiny Air Force base at Neah Bay Washington back in the 70’s. My folks brought home black t shirts with red band logo lettering front and back. I’m at shirt collector and dang I wish I could even find one today. Good memories
This is another trip down memory lane for me. I grew up watching the Midnight Special every saw night. It was a ritual for me. I wanted to see the finest groups in rock and roll. The Midnight Special, never seemed to disappoint. They always had a bad ass group on.
I love this song. Burton Cummings' voice is outstanding and he's unbelievable on the piano. For some fun, and a look at his sense of humor, there are a few videos out on YT from concert footage of him doing an impression of Gordon Lightfoot singing Rod Stewart's Maggie May. The Guess Who were one of my favorites as a teenager.
That was a little more subdued than the recording, which was nice for the venue. Great song! Burton has such a unique voice, and I always gravitated toward it. Nice piano playing, too. It's strange to see him with that clean-cut look, though. Hehe
@@gregoryduncan3067 The recording had what sounded like a few strings, if I remember correctly. Maybe not though. I just meant this performance was a tad bit slower and has a more intimate feel, especially since they highlighted Burton and the group was darkened in the background. Correction: maybe not strings, but horns.
Amazing. I remember later that year Barry White showed up there with his "Love Unlimited Orchestra" performing his "Love's Theme". I'm sure its coming soon.
Is it my imagination, but in this one and only video of Burton, for the very first time, he appears like he's either struggling, or isnt really into this session for some reason.
Burt: I'm gonna go out there, I'm gonna wear a turtleneck and a wool suit and I'm gonna sit under those hot lights and play and sing my heart out! Everyone else: you're gonna melt.
This song was popular when I was a child, early '70's. This song was also playing on the radio when we were driving on the freeway, (1986) and the boyfriend I was with at that time, started singing along with it, looking at me, directing the song at me, to manipulatively make his point. I hate it when men use songs to master-manipulate us! He was trying to guilt trip me, because I was thinking about leaving him, because he was abusive. Abusive, controling men know how to "work" their women, to get them to do whatever they want. Well, hearing him sing this song at me, with that sad-act expression on his face, was enough to make me stay with him, (until the next time he was abusive).
This guy's voice is spectacular, and I wish there was more of him. That said, can you really call this band The Guess Who without Randy or Carl? The Burton Cummings Band would sound just as good, just without the name recognition.
That's Kurt Winter, not Randy B. By this time, Randy left the Guess Who about 3 years prior. But yeah, Bachman came up with that piano part around '68/'69(?)
#AudioFreqx I know a Woman from TO, Canada who knew Burton Cummings personally. She owned a popular Rock bar with rotating live bands playing each night. She said Burton Cummings was the most conceited and arrogant musician she's ever met. She's met thousands of great Musicians and he's the only one she didn't have anything nice to say about. We both love the Bachman Brothers, Brave Belt and BTO though. I believe you and I believe her.
For a powerful lead vocal/lead piano fronted piece, this rivals anything that the greats like Billy Joel, Barry Manilow or Elton John did in the seventies.
My God! 50 years later and it doesn’t get better than this. His voice still gives me chills.
I saw him live a few days ago at an outdoor venue- the voice- the same now as then. He’s 77 or near it and his voice is super powerful. It was very impressive. If you get a chance to see him live- I hope you go!

If Cummings/Bachman looked like Plant /Page, the would have been in 20 years ago.
The rnr hall of a fame is a joke.
It’s. Hard. They weren’t necessarily rock

Nobody covers these great songs because they would be exposed as second rate singers.
One of the greatest of all time

Hey kids... this is what real singing is all about. No computers, no bullshit. Just talent at the highest level.
Robert Plant said Burt had one of the best voices he ever heard...man what a compliment..and he wasnt wrong..🙏😎

One of the best voices of the era
Burton Cummings is amazing and he's still just as amazing even at 75.
He has a beautiful voice. 👀
1974... I was 10 years old and not a care in the world.

If you want to hear some other great Canadian artists from the 70s, I can make some suggestions.

The hits just keep coming. Keep up the good work Midnight Special.
A hugely underrated vocalist, amazing talent!

Burt, thank you for your 🎁 of Guess Who clips ❤.
Man those vocals are a lot of work.
His voice is so "easy". So much power with so little effort. That's why it stayed strong for so long.
