Great review! I recently got a BOSS GX-10 effects processor, but after attempting a firmware upgrade, the unit got stuck and now won't boot. I've contacted local service providers, but they couldn't fix it, and there's no warranty support here in my country. Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Any advice on possible fixes or recovery methods would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
It ticks so many boxes but I think the Achilles heel for many people might be the user interface. Fender do that so much better with the more graphical look with little amps and pedals. Whilst the drag and drop touch screen is fancy I personally think it could more easily drag you down that dangerous path of over fiddling tone chasing where you simply forget to just play. Having said that I think the construction and form factor are great and as always with Boss solid. Whilst fender not unsurprisingly do the clean amps well the Boss does the high gain better and the overall range and quality of effects is better. The Boss community for patch sharing is also more advanced. Sadly my bedroom playing skills can't justify this piece of kit quite yet. In the interim I'd really like to see Boss pull their finger out and get a Katana Go 2 out there to compete with the recently released Fender Micro Plus. Even for my level of skills the user interface might be critical as I definitely need to play rather than drown in option paralysis!
I love the size and price, but wish it had at least four effects buttons, in addition to the C1 button. On-stage, no one has time to scroll through various menus and modes.
I agree. If it had just one additional button it would make a really big difference, as unfortunately there's no midi connections for a midi controller, when that'd be needed. The problem is that we don't always need those, and I'd rather have the tiny GX-10 to carry around while occasionally bringing along the midi controller I already have than pay extra for the GX-100 and be stuck to have to carry a less compact unit every single time.
I'm seriously thinking about buying this over the Kemper Stage, Tonex or Tonex One, & all the others for gigging. Size, Ease of use and TONES are my leading reasons. You don't have to learn a whole 'environment' of menu diving in order to pull up great tones! I DO wish it had XLR stereo outs, however!
going to purchase a multi effects unit and not sure whether to go for this or the gx 100 , the hotone stomp or the valeton gp200 , whats do you recommend
@rockylocky9929 Check them all out if you can. I tried all three and prefer the Hotone. Better touch screen, fun to use, and sounds great... plus, now amp and pedal captures.
I was thinking Boss IR-2 as a backup to my GX-100, because I figure I can finish a gig without any effects if necessary. But now I'm thinking the GX10 makes more sense as a backup.
Hi, love the channel! Any suggestions how should I use the Boss GX-10 with the Boss Katana (MkII 100) Power Amp In? Speaker emulation is off, and the output is set to Katana-100 Return, but it still sounds a bit unpleasant.
I'm a sucker for Boss stuff but is there a compelling reason to get this if you already own a GT1000core? The touchscreen is much more user friendly for sure - but what else? Studio Rats content is always worth watching - thanks for always taking us through new gear.
No, there's an attached expression pedal I guess, but I'd hardly consider that an advantage. I think the core actually has more routing options and more control customization in the menus than the gx series, although the gx got an update recently so they may be more or less exactly the same. Basically, just look up existing threads about gt1000 vs gx-100. The only difference in those discussions from the core vs gt-10 is size and buttons.
At this point the lack of a built-in Bluetooth in such a recent device is a bummer. I get that this is GX series' entry level Boss offering and that they wouldn't add such a feature as the GX-100 doesn't have it natively either, but still... sigh.
Is there any way to run direct with cab sim on and also to an amp’s fx return with cab sim off? I see there’s a branch out but since the amp and cab are in the same block on the GX I can’t place the branch out between them(?)
Hey Paul and Lee, what are your thoughts on this or even the GX100 vs a Tonex now that it has more effects on the way? Option overload is a double edge sword. 🤦♂️
Do what i did... GX100 with tonex one in the loop (total cost £600). Endless possibilities, but importantly fantastic tonex amp captures coupled to fantastic Boss FX. Pedal Switch capability / options in the Boss are excellent.
I’m looking for something for back up for my quad cortex. How do the amp sounds compare to the new walrus audio ACS one pedal? I know that this one has all the effects but as far as the sounds go with the amp and cab sims
Do you have any pull with Boss? Have a suggestion for the katana gafc ex. M2... in the gx100 you can assign as second tap on a patch to turn of or on certain effects within the patch. This functionality could be added to gafc ex. Long press could still turn solo on and off. Just and idea. Whether they want to develop that or not is another question. Thanks for all your posts. I learn a lot from watching them. Was thinking of getting a gx100 or gt1000 but the i read a post advising they can be stood on and damaged in a small pub gig with no stage. Said the gafc ex is the best option in that situation because its robust. On starting to gig. So it will be corners of pubs for a while for me.. A video on such a set up would be a great bonus if you ever wanted to do one.
Hi Paul, Can I ask how can you achieve this tight, rich and clear(never mushy and tiny)sound for all the time? It is incredibly clear. Audio interface? Level control? Post processing? Thanks from now, Celal
@TheStudioRats thanks for the reply, noted. I checked your website, but I couldn't find for mine(fm3). Are there any? But that unique clarity/characterestic I heard is also valid for your other videos like real amp or equipment demos with other guitars as well. Maybe I can finally ask your audio interface and any other common equipment you are using on signal chain. Tremendous playing, great works, mate. All the best.
There is this old joke about the guitarist with multiple pedals. By the time he got them switched on the solo spot was over. It applies to this as well if you don't have or cannot use an external controller with it to pick up the sound needed right there and then.
@yutongqin7952 if you just wanna use it for DAW, i have a lot of midi connections on my Board, so i need to integrate the device, aswell you cant hook up any midi Controllers/Footcontrols via midi in this way....
Paul - the black Strat sounds great, but good Lord it looks like you tied it to the back of your car and dragged it through the streets of your town. I have a Fender Strat Time Machine relic also, but is not as heavily relic'd as your black one. Funny if it was a PRS the value would be nill. Beat the hell out of a Strat and it goes up in value.
Debating about returning the Line 6 Helix LT and picking up one of these Boss units. Those who've tried both, your thoughts? The Boss looks easier to use.
@@tommanseau6277 Happy to help. Be aware though: Boss' philosophy is somewhat different from other manufacturers'. You will have unique amp models (the X and original ones) which will allow you to model whatever you want (in addition to some known brands models), but you will not have 200 options to choose from like in the HX. In my opinion, this is a good thing. This, I think, allowed Boss to nail the "amp in the room" feeling through their AIRD tech, appreciated even by die-hard fractal users. I've read a fair number of comments in YT videos from fractal users claiming they replaced their FM3/9/Axe with the GT1000
That will depend on your use case. Sound wise they'll be similar quality as both use the same AIRD technology. The GX has more amps (32) and effects (170) to choose from than the Katana. The Katana only has 5 amp types with 2 variations each. You can only have one amp and 5 simultaneous effects on. On the GX u have up to 15 assignable blocks for amps and effects and u can move things around the chain as u like. Plus it has an fx loop which the Katana 50 lacks, u can insert anywhere in the chain. Just overall more flexibility and capability with the GX units. I have a Katana 50 mk ii. Got tired of bending over to change things all the time as I like to play lots of genres. Got myself a GX-100 now and hardly use the Katana anymore. Way lighter and easier to take my tones with me when needed. Can't fit a Katana 50 in my backpack ;)
@@metalsquidYes it has a effects loop which Katana 50Mk2 hasn't. First I thought, wow, I have to buy this and connect my RC-5 into that loop. But then I was told that the effect loop is not stereo. (Or is it?) Seems that Boss always has these kind of unpleasant surprises, at least in every reasonable priced products. They never do what I need them to do.
@@jutukka yeah it's mono. For stereo fx loop you need to step up to the GT-1000. I guess they have to cut costs somewhere. For the amount of other things the GX units are capable of, I think it's a fair tradeoff at this price range. For eg. it is more important to me to have the seamless, instant patch switching and low latency response to my picking, than a stereo fx loop. Perhaps increasing the power to handle 2 fx loops would have increased the cost of the unit too much. After all the GTs can process 24 blocks and 3 parallel paths while the GX can only do 15 blocks and 2 parallel paths. To save money there's always compromise and choices we have to make :)
@@metalsquid Yes. Another thing that always triggers me with Boss products is that one CTL/EXP2 jack. It is always either switch OR pedal but not both at the same time. Am I the only person in this universe who would like to use both of them at the same time? Same problem with Katana and RC-5. (In case of RC-5 I could adjust drum level and use two foot switches if it had connectors to both. But no...) And why would GX-10 be an exception in that chosen politics? I just do not get it... I suppose that those people who design Boss products are engineers, not musicians. And those engineers never use those devices. (I mean who musician thinks that that RC-5 two button memory save is a good way to do that thing, etc.) User interface design is not the strongest point of Boss.
My only real concern with this unit is the touchscreen. How easy are they to replace when they break? Because they will. I was hoping they would make a GT2 but I guess this will have to do, lol.
Sounds good. Shame about the interface. I’ve tried to use and love the GX 100 but just can’t use it. The interface is so unintuitive and difficult to get things done.
I have the Boss GT1 which is completely abandoned by the brand, and it is still for sale, and I have it without being able to use the BTS on macOS Catalina because the kids decided not to continue updating it since 2018. Boss has a good proposal, it sounds great, but there are errors that are not justifiable. The GX100 does not even have XLR outputs, much less balanced outputs, on top of a terrible technical support that does not care about its customers, zero updates. Now if we extrapolate it here, this is a terrible purchase. Ok, now, I believe the story of your emulations being the best, why have so many amps, you already improved the direct impulse loads from the BTS, lots of features, lots of changes, but let's see, there are pedals that offer more for much less. In this price segment, having terrible support, not updating, and on top of that not having balanced XLR or TRS outputs, bye. With this pedal it's a desperate attempt to do what everyone else does, miniaturize what you have. Ok less buttons, I understand that, but now it has no MIDI, terrible choice, no balanced outputs, offers less than the rest, no updates and terrible technical support. I wouldn't put my money back into Boss if I'm speaking from the professional sector, get your money together and go for something that will give you a good return on your money and is really worth what you're paying for.
These tones sound good though my limited experience with the boss modelers have not been positive. The lead guitar player that replaced me when I left my last band uses the GT-1000. Never heard such horrible tones. Of course that’s not necessarily the modelers fault; but other modelers I’ve heard by other guitar players sound ok to me.
I think it’s laughable when I watch these reviews and I see these people with these relic guitars is though they’ve beaten these guitars down over the years and Unfortunately they’re playing never adds up to the amount of wear and tear that there guitar shows lol as far as the effect goes there’s not there I’ll swing this in anything else I own there’s no reason to buy it
don't find that "new" pedal bringing anything more to the already overbooked cheap multi-effects market ... Mooer or Nux do better with much much better UIs than Boss who's really not innovative nowadays ... New katanas are a disappointment and they even ask for an additional 50euros to add on their amps one of the oldest technology that exist ... the Bluetooth. A shame. That brand is surviving because of its name, that won't last long if they do not bring something really new and special.
No midi, no balanced outputs, no constant updates and not much to say about technical support, so that's where Chinese companies shine, launching an ampero/valeton with all the features and connections for a third of the price.
Nice one team Studio Rats - your tone is always 🔥🔥🔥

(I mean who musician thinks that that RC-5 two button memory save is a good way to do that thing, etc.) User interface design is not the strongest point of Boss.
snapshots? or just presets?
Bugger! Now I’ve got GAS 😊.
Beano
Is Lee going to change his live set up again now? 🤘
Of course.
@@TheStudioRats😂
My only real concern with this unit is the touchscreen. How easy are they to replace when they break? Because they will.
I was hoping they would make a GT2 but I guess this will have to do, lol.
The price to fix a $399 unit out of warranty… you’ll be buying something else by then. That pretty much goes with any product.
NEW Me-25! 😁😁
Need more footswitch.. atleast 6 or better 9 in one multieffect pedals
Are the patches compatible between the GX 10 and GX 100?
It’s all explained in the vidro
@@TheStudioRats Could we have the patch for the initial riff?
Price?
$400. £350.
Sounds good. Shame about the interface. I’ve tried to use and love the GX 100 but just can’t use it. The interface is so unintuitive and difficult to get things done.
Pocket pod!😅
Seems like a Nux MG30 layout. Amirite
Sounds like a GT3.
Relic-ing is getting out of hand 😂
A bit more treble and a bit more bottom end, with high gain... That's where you lost me...
VALETONE, AMPERO is BETTER Than Any BOSS Product .. BOSS & ROLAND gonna RIP very Soon , Only BOSS Harmony Unit is Best.
I think it’s laughable when I watch these reviews and I see these people with these relic guitars is though they’ve beaten these guitars down over the years and Unfortunately they’re playing never adds up to the amount of wear and tear that there guitar shows lol as far as the effect goes there’s not there I’ll swing this in anything else I own there’s no reason to buy it
Broke boi just say you can’t afford one
don't find that "new" pedal bringing anything more to the already overbooked cheap multi-effects market ... Mooer or Nux do better with much much better UIs than Boss who's really not innovative nowadays ... New katanas are a disappointment and they even ask for an additional 50euros to add on their amps one of the oldest technology that exist ... the Bluetooth. A shame. That brand is surviving because of its name, that won't last long if they do not bring something really new and special.
whats with all these sellouts
No midi, no balanced outputs, no constant updates and not much to say about technical support, so that's where Chinese companies shine, launching an ampero/valeton with all the features and connections for a third of the price.
Without xlrs or mid, it's useless.
MIDI is via usb or the optional Bluetooth adapter
TRUE!
