This video has helped me so much. I am so thankful you take the time to make these. I have successfully re jetted the carbs on my 1980 gs550 and it runs so good with pods now. THANK YOU
Good job! I think your definitely in the ballpark on your choice of jets. I think you still might be a hair lean on the main but it should run good. Raising the needle makes a big difference. The only other suggestion I would offer is to bench sync them before you install them. It's easy and puts you very close. After jetting is sorted out then take the time to sync properly. Keep up the good work!!
Looking forward to seeing the bike run! Great job with the videos! I put a Dyna S ignition in my 79 gs550 and new dyna coils and it runs great. Love it
The float bowls for these carbs are left or righthanded, and should be fitted with all the drain screws facing outward, so they can be accessed with the carbs in position.
Love your videos I've been working in a gs 850 and your videos helped a lot. I'd like to ask though how can I sync my carbs when it comes to the fuel and air screws and also setting the slides properly. Hope you can help me out.
How did this jet/needle set up work for you? I have the same setup and am ordering jets for my 89 550E. This build has been a huge help. Thanks from the US!
This worked fine, had to turn the fuel around 1.75 turns out and the air about 0.25 turns, and lifted the needle up by 2 notches in the end, although if you have an '89 I think that's CV carbs so from what I understand the needle stay the same.
Ah, in that case I know what I'm talking about now ;) yeah, as mentioned above then, I am fitting K&N filter pods rather than the cheap ones I put on this weekend so I'll see if it's still the same with those.
Perfect! Look forward to seeing how they do. Hard finding solid info outside of the gs forum and most everyone there says to just leave them alone ha. I received my bike last year in great condition and running well. Was a little hard tearing it apart but can't wait to see the end result.
I just bought a gs1000 and runs like a sack of potatoes. It's a 4 to 1 exhaust and has pods. The main jet is 120 and the slow jet is 27.5. Is this too high of a jetting system? Should I downsize to a lower main/slow jets? I also checked the spark plugs and they look pretty black, I'm guessing it's running too rich? Thanks!
this is a very good video and should be highlighted more. =) You mentioned in comments that you will share a like in description for the guide you use when you adjust based on what exhaust and pod the bike has but I haven't seen in it there yet.
Hi love the build, I have a 79 gs550 looking to re jet. I have a 4 into 1 motard exhaust and small pod filters. All stock carb at the moment. It does run bit won't stay at idle. What would u suggest jet wise, and where did you get the new jets from ?? Same carbs as u
+The Vardarioter I know. I had 2 videos a week a few months ago but it's finding content. Once these bikes get a bit faster at coming together I can go back to 2 a week. Motovlogs will be easier to maintain fresh content
So, tearing carbs out this weekend for jetting on an 78 gs550. And I'm finding different answers on jet sizing. A stock main jet is a size 80? But a stock pilot jet is either 50 or 15??? I want to bump mains up to 90s for pod filters and 4 into 2 free flowing exhaust But do I order 17.5 pilots or something over 50?
So the 50s you’re reading would be the later cv carbs secondary mains it seems. With a 78 my money is on 17.5 as it’s a slide carb. But best bet is to open it up and see what markings you have
@@forthebold copy that What about mid jets? Just leave them? Thanks alot man Videos are wicked ! Going to follow your lead and chop the front fork springs this weekend Assuming I can find the right size pipe to chop down for the spacer
Hey great help on your vids. I'm working on a 77 gs550. Just busy rebuilding the carbs. What was your final setup on the jets and needle height with the k&n pods. I'm ordering the same pods and have ordered 97.5 mains to try. Running 4 into 1 exhaust. North east England on the coast. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Rob
Hey. I’ve actually been playing with my GS last year before the weather got too cold. Went up to 110s to see how they’d perform as it was starving a little at full mid to full throttle.
@@forthebold thanks for replying. I will let you know how I get on with the k&n 's and 97.5s when they come. Gave carbs a good clean as bike was bogging down past half throttle, that was with cheap pods on with a rubber strip wrapped around them to reduce flow. The cheap pods came with the bike. Start and tick over was great. Cheers Rob
Great vid as usual mate. Just checking you lowered the clips on the needles in order to raise the needle height and richen the mix right? 🤔 If you raised the clip you will have actually lowered the needle and leaned it out. Easy to confuse the process, but got the impression you were going to raise the clip.... hope I'm wrong though 🙂👍
great channel. somewhere I recall you ordering even bigger jets than 87.5 etc?? but haven't seen those installed? what was the final outcome? what jets were used when color tuning? thx.
I ended up sticking with these sizes for the colortune video, but instead I've now had K&N filters delivered as this should sort the issue I have with it (I think)
Hey For The Bold-Dreegez, you have done a great job man on that bike👍🏼💯. I have a question I have the same Gs550 bike as you, made it cafe racer and it's been a nightmare I can't figure out why the bike just die after few seconds when I leave it ON without accelerating it. I bought new coils new rectifier new battery new spark plugs new oil filter, changed the oil, and still has that problem, could you help me, need your help please
Great video! PLEASE, I need help with the GS550 witch one I just bought recently. It has an exhaust system 4 to 1 and 4 air pods. Carb VM22SS has main jet 92,50 and midrange jet 50. I am having trouble to start it and either run it. Looks like it is choking, recently changed new spark plugs and new petcock but no improvement. Wondering to swap air pods back to airbox but I am not sure what should be settings for VM22SS carb with exhaust 4in1? I'll be grateful for any help.
@@forthebold thank you for answer. How about main jet if I leave airbox but exhaust is changed to 4 to 1? What size main jet you would recommend? At the moment it is running on 92.5
Thanks! One other question I’m having trouble finding an answer to: There’s 3 tube lines coming from in between the carbs as I’m trying to hook up the gas tank. The only info I can find says the vacuum/return line is the one in between carbs 2 and 3, above the fuel line, and the other 2 are breather lines. Is that what you found to be accurate?
Hi, I've been doing needle adjustment also this summer, but it was easier with only one needle :D right? But you know it will put more gas into mixture and it can cause carbonated engine. So, be careful :)

+Amos Gottardi I used a chart where you go up 2 sizes if you use 2-1 exhausts etc then add another if you use pods. I'll find the chart and paste into the description
+Amos Gottardi best check your carburettors to see if they're CV or slide. Pre 1980s were slide and post 1980s are CV. CV I believe are more difficult to set up
For The Bold - dreegez yeah it's CV, carbs, it's running ok, but seeing the spark plugs it looks too rich and infact I think the jets are quite big, 42.5 pilot and 115 mains, I'll try and play around a bit ahaha thanks for the answer 💪🏻your videos are amazing
I've enjoyed this series, but in changing the jets, it would help if you had a close up of each new jet, and showed one sequence where you S L O W L Y screwed the pilot jets together and inserted them. Your arm is in the way as you blast through the process at high speed. Otherwise, top notch stuff.

I got a 78 gs 750 with pods and exhaust mufflers just like yours the stock 4 into 2. I have 15 pilot jet, 100 main jet and jet needle set in middle position. Have a suggestion where to start with pilot jet size, main jet size and needle position since I have same air filter and exhaust set up? Follow me on Instagram at dw_moto1
David White first thing I’d say is bin those carbs and get k&n pods. Up the pilot by 1 size and the May Nhs by 4 (each size is an increase of 2.75 ) and see how that gets you. Raise the needle up by 1 also and roughly 2 screws out of the fuel and about half turn out on the air. Not saying it’s right but it’s what I would try
Cool. Hopefully that will work okay.
Thanks Andy, and thanks for your suggestion for the sizes, Dynotek ignition kit is being installed this week so we'll see how they work together.
