  • Paolo Maldini is regarded by many as the greatest defender of all time. His Father, Cesare was a bonafide legend in his own right. There were big boots to fill for Paolo and fill them he did. Winning a plethora of trophies and making over 900 appearances for AC Milan. This is the story of how Paolo Maldini became the god of defending. Enjoy!

Most of Maldini's highlights aren't tackles. Maldini was famous for going games without tackling anyone. When people asked why it seems like he never tackles he said "If I have to make a tackle it means I've made a mistake" And that art is lost on modern defending. He learned that from Baresi who also rarely tackled anyone. Makelele was another example of this art. Defending is not about tackling. it's about reading the game, intercepting play and making sure the ball doesn't reach the strikers. But today people worship guys like Vidic and Ramos for being warriors who throw themselves into challenges with reckless abandon and doing last ditch sliding tackles off the line. If making a tackle means you've made a mistake then what does a last ditch sliding tackle off the line mean? 😂

Incredible reading of the game. Maldini made things look so smooth which made the center back role look so effortless.

Never forgetting the 2005 UCL Final with Liverpool, when Maldini scored in the 1st minute (the fastest UCL Final goal in history) and AC Milan would go on to lead 3-0 at the break, but ended up losing after Liverpool made it 3-3, and then, the infamous Shevchenko penalty miss. Dealing a huge blow to the confidence and success of the team.
Yet, 2 years later winning the UCL Final again in 2007 and against Liverpool to make it ironic. Showing the resilience of Maldini and the AC Milan team at the time.

The difference is, in all of his career, 1048 matches, Maldini kept 486 clean sheets. None of them can match that. Dominant since 1984. Faced every legend of those decades in the game. Both he, Beckenbaur and Baresi stand alone atop the mountain of greatest defenders ever.

Makes you ill. Maldini said no, Batistuta said no. I am not sure how dangerous kitchen appliances can be, but I would put my hand into for either. Jesus Christ - I knew about Batigol, but the MAN. Wow. Utd would have shined.
