  • Video of Michael Evanko and Jake Villwock fly fishing for large spring run (pre-spawn) smallmouth bass on a tributary of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. This video was shot on April 28, 2018 on publicly accessible water. Evanko and Villwock used a drift boat to cover several of miles of water in seven hours of fishing. The flows were around 600CFS and the water visibility was 3ft. A majority of the bass in this video were caught on Jake Villwock's version of Blaine Chocklett's "Game Changer" streamer. Villwock's pattern uses feathers and a "Roamer" head. Villwock does not make this streamer pattern available to the public as it is time intensive and the materials are costly. This is the best video I've seen on smallmouth volume (numbers of large smallies). It's easy to catch that many when they're only 12 to 14"... but damn, consistently catching 18"ers in a creek or river, again... DAMN!!!

    Love the soft plastic joke. Haha. Thanks for showing the flies you used in detail. I want to get more into streamer fishing. Great video as always man!

    👍 Awesome 😎 Yup, it's that time of year. Unbelievable size and consistent catch rate usually till mid May. Walleye starts tomorrow and the tribs as well as the lake offer up a mixed bag of big fish. Great video Mike, I bet your arms felt like overcooked spaghetti, lol. Thanks again for the trip!

    I have been catching prespawn creek smallies for 10+ years on conventional spinning gear and I have to say, watching this video the 20th time.... I am pumped to go give this technique a shot. My Fall-Spring has been mostly consumed by spey fishing for lake run steelhead and browns but I will be putting the spey/switch rods down in a few weeks for sure! Picked up a imx-pro and tied a ton of swingin d's and GC's. Its on now. Thanks for this, I always try to introduce a new style of fishing to help make things even more exciting each year and this should be awesome. Been a while since I fished a single hand rod! Great video guys!

    Awesome video, great action, and you had the best guide in the area. Jake is the fishiest dude I know and has put me in plenty of trout on tailwaters and spring creeks. I wanna see Jake throw that soft plastic paddle tail with the fly rod. Lol

    Brings back memories of Spring bass in the Allegheny when the smallmouth were moving from deeper water into the shallows. Fly selection was pretty limited way back then, muddled minnows mostly. Fifteen-20 fish a day wasn't uncommon. Thanks for the cool video!

    Excellent video! I really like the POV camera, makes it feel like we're part of the action. I've had peacock bass try to take the fly out of a hooked up fish, I've never seen a smallie do it though. Really cool.

      Happy you are picking up the sport. Winter is a great time to get out and try because it's quiet and there is no one on the water.

    No doubt. You killed it with this one. Smallies are fly crushers. Now come up here to Erie and go after Presque Isle smallmouth. Good job!

    Happens all the time with smallies - two or three follow - pitch back in as they are likely schooled up

    Do you strip set or raise the rod to set?

    • @FlyCastingColorado
      @FlyCastingColorado 5 років тому

      Katrina Reasbeck it’s always a strip set for bass but a rod raise is good if you see them take your fly

    I crushed them not far from your spot. Try a Nikko helgramite on a spinning rod , if ya didn't already do so. :)

    I am a fly fisherman as well. I love fishing and have revolved my life around it since I was a child. I view it as sacred. Therefore I feel no need to be dishonest about the size of the fish I catch. Seriously, no need for it. Sorry the be the hater but come on Jake.
