SMALLMOUTH! POPPERS! STREAMERS! ~ Trouts On The Water // Episode 2: MI Smallies with Mike Schultz

- Last month, Rick Mikesell and Ivan Orsic made the cross-country voyage to meet up with Midwest fly fishing legend in the making - Mike Schultz (aka Schultzy). The goal? To get a taste of some of the best warmwater fly fishing the state of Michigan has to offer. Our first day was spent riding the waves on Lake St. Clair in search of Muskellunge (more on that later). The final two days on the boat were spent in Schultzy's boat. We trying to put the pieces of the 20" smallmouth bass puzzle - fishing topwater and streamers in an attempt to fool a big (and old) smallmouth bass on the fly.

Lived in Michigan for 30 years.
I have chased every fish in the state with a fly rod.
Nothing, and I mean _nothing_ stokes my fire like big smallies. They're just different. They're bulldoggin', backflippin', tailwalkin', mean muggin' psychos.
Smallmouth are super fun. Rick nailed it, the casting is so dynamic and engaging. Nice work guys!

anybody that has honestly chased big river smallmouth on a fly, knows that mike schultz is right. the big ones 18"+ are not that easy to catch. Tons of fun when you finally do find a pod of some bigger fish, specially if they want to eat top water!

What size rods are you using up there. I’ve been thinking about smallies on the fly and wonder if a 5 weight is sufficient.

What's with the need to trout set vs strip? 6:10
Talking with Schultzy, it'd be like throwing a strip set on a trout eating a hopper. The eat and presentation require a trout set, as opposed to a strip set that might pull the fly out of the zone horizontally, essentially.

Agreed. Top water for smallmouth is some of the most fun you can have with a fly rod.
