Even though Griffith has supposedly cut all his emotions out of his new form, gaining Rickert's approval of Falconia would have totally validated his sacrifice of the Hawks. That slap was the total denial of Griffith's selfish actions.

It's a tragedy how that one achievement is all anyone talks about. No one talks about how he invented the paperclip, calculated Pi to the final decimal, or cured cancer.
griffith wanted both his kingdom and his band, but in the end he had to give up one. So, in turn, he made a hollow copy with creatures that followed him due to his demon side rather than his ambition. And Rickert spotted all that during his meeting.
Griffith only wanted his kindom, that was his dream ambition. But he had to sacrifice the hawks for it. One would think that his human side died the day of the sacrifice. But he's still human, his humanity is telling him his victory is hollow. That his band of the hawk were more than just his tools for an end. The reason he invited both Guts and Rickert back it's because he WANTS what is left of the family. Griffith is an merciless murderer. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have a heart. he has a very twisted heart full of emotions that clash between love and ambition. Ultimately he ended up choosing ambition. But that doesn't mean he doesn't regret abandoning the later. What i like about Griffith is that, i think, that up until the end of the series, he will believe 100% that his is the hero of the story, Anyone would say he is a tragic villain, but he 100% thinks he is a tragic hero.

When Rickert slapped Griffith it made his character even more interesting, before the eclipse he didn't do that much to make himself memorable, but after he became a talented blacksmith. Griffith offered him a place in his utopia not just because he's the only unbranded hawk member but because he was genuinely skilled enough to be a valuable piece in his army. I think the only reason his slap could hit Griffith was because he didn't expect it, Griffith the man who used the unpredictable shift in wind currents to defeat the kushan emperor couldn't have guessed he would get slapped by rickert. That's why he sent rag apostle, he is one of the few unpredictable pieces left on the board and Griffith can't stand it since he gave everything up to become the story's hero king

When I saw the panel of Rickert slapping Griffith, I was like "Oh no... You brave motherfucker." It's really shocking that his slap showed so much. Despite hunting for years and always racing towards him in rage, Guts hasn't even laid a finger on Griffith since the Eclipse. And yet Rickert did but not in a killing blow, but a simple gesture of anger and disrespect. He no longer saw Griffith as the White Hawk but as a backstabber who believed everything he accomplished with the Band of the Hawk was worth nothing. And I think, just for a second, it made Griffith feel guilt. Because even though he created a utopia, he made it on the bodies of his own men who he sacrificed. Who minutes before, risked their own lives to save him. And Rickert explained why no matter how perfect Falconia is, it was never worth the cost he paid. And that, seemed to sting Griffith a bit. Funny how just one slap hurt Griffith more than all Guts had done like his attempt at killing him, cursing his very name and killing all who made the similar choice he did. Rickert is just the best.
Yeah just hearing what happened at the eclipse means shit unless you were there, in was a ocean of blood and organs that spilled all over the place, definitely the darkest event that has happened in berserk, don't know if it will be darkest for all of berserk, but it was fucked up.

Slan does count because a later panel shows her resting in a hallway of intestines and shit. Dragonslayer damaged Ganishka’s astral form so the case would be true for Slan as well

Griffith was always so composed but still had moments of vitality and warmth, especially around gatts. Femto looks like he's trying to do his best to imitate a human.The difference is jarring.

No, Rickert is the Krillin of Berserk, in that he represents the bystander's POV to all this horror. He is the emotional conduit that all readers can access, which previously was Judeau pre-Eclipse. Rickert has no superpowers, when you take a step back. Just ordinary human will.

Rickert, derived from "Richard," mean: powerful, brave, ruler Take this name meaning into the account, Rickert might just be the one that "save the day" in the end. The ruler part is very important here as Rickert actually versy suitable to be a leader as he grow: compose, smart, creator (blacksmith/engineer), kind, just, truthful. Also, wonder how he got his own party & the survival of his group truly depend in his leadership & engineering/smithing skills??

People can say that Casca couldn't handle the events of the eclipse and went insane, but I wonder if that isn't exactly correct. Maybe Griffith violated her mind as well as her body. It may have been an intentional act to prevent Guts from having access to Casca. Essentially specifically denying Guts Casca in the worst possible way. Guts and Casca standing together united would almost certainly be capable of defeating Griffith eventually. Casca was a highly trained and motivated captain of the band of the Hawk. She had several near misses with being raped before and with Apostles. It seems a bit cheap to say that she wasn't mentally prepared for either of those things. She was a tough as nails, battle hardened warrior. The gore and blood present in the eclipse was extreme but close enough to the wars she participated in. Now the betrayal of Griffith would certainly be shocking, but given that he had already effectively betrayed the band of the hawk by banging the princess, I don't feel like she couldn't have seen it coming. Clearly, Griffith had already acted in his own interest over the band of the hawk.
Casca was all that, but you're forgetting the bit where her and the Hawks were on the run for a year or so which made her physically and mentally exhausted to the point that, when Guts got back, she literally tried to kill herself by making herself plummet down the waterfall.
That, and watching your best friends and comrades get eaten alive, especially Judo's death, and his last words to her....For an entire year she had constant stress and trauma, then saves hawk-boy, finds out that he is entirely disfigured and cripple. No wonder she dissociated from reality, bitch needed a break from all of that shit.
I doubt it was her womanly nature, never really held her back that much before. As you said, that whole year Gutts left, he had down time, and was not under the constant threat of persecution. He was at that point, physically and mentally rested. Unlike Caska, who was under constant threat, I doubt they had much for food or medical supplies either.
Yes, Casca's exhaustion is a fair point, which I elided. However, I think it is a more interesting question to ask why would it would be true that Griffith did it intentionally. He was staring at Guts the whole time. He was intent on stealing Casca from Guts. He had literally just become this powerful spiritual figure. Why wouldn't he try to steal her spiritually as well as physically?

thats true one of the many messages of the story that vengeance and great ambition are a self destructive path shown in the count arc when puck tells the disfigured old man vargas to keep on living and let go of his obsession of killing the count cuz hes wasting his life with nothing to gain and a lot to lose ..vargas agrees but its too late...yet guts insults vargas saying that weaklings should know their place and rat must live like rats but pucks roasts him saying that hes afraid cuz he sees himself in vargas and that he is also fighting a lost battle .. in someway guts is at the same crossroad that griffith had before the eclipse when he imagined himself taking his wounds and living a peaceful life and letting go of his ambition or pursuing his ambition at the cost of his comrades in guts case vengeance or caska

to see rickert's fate unknown all those years ago when i first watched the original anime left me so sad on top of the already terrible depression i felt for the ones in the eclipse. but the best thing i ever did was actually read Berserk manga about 4 years after watching the show. idk why it took me so long, probably because i didnt like reading at the time. i was so happy to see that he played an important role in the series after the golden age arc.
Awesome work again man, keep making videos :) Another interesting note is Guts couldn't confront Griffith out right like he wanted to, because Griffith wasn't in the physical anymore. Whereas Rickert knew where Griffith was once he found out the whole truth.
That's a very good point. Rickert found out the truth whilst Griffith was somewhere he could reach him. Part of Gut's decreasing mental state is the fact he was chasing Griffith for 2 years who wasn't even in our world at the time, essentially chasing shadows.
Good video man I enjoyed it, one thing I dissagree on is when you mentioned that Guts had abandoned all of his morality, its been a while since I've read the older chapters but if I remember correctly he is still a good person, he did have problems for example attacting Caska out of frustration, I think thats why he let others into the group, to help with Caska and to keep an eye on him perhaps, atleast thats what I remember but again good video thanks for sharing.
Guts is not a good person, I used to like him but I completely hate him now. He kills innocent people if they get in the way and calls them ants, he has no dream of his own aside from killing Griffith, he is still as undecided as before on whether he even wants to kill Griffith, he is an aimless child without guidance and he attempted to rape Casca! You can say whatever you want about Guts trying to rape Casca but he did not do it when he was possessed by berserk armor demon or whatever; I read the manga, he was "overcome with lust" and just tried to rape her, after engaging her he became possessed and saw how he would have massacred her and stopped. Guts is literally the very thing he hates, he has become everything he always thought Griffith to be and that is why I love the manga; guts is the bad guy, he has become the very thing he hates most. What most people fail to see is that Griffith is the good guy, to explain my views on Griffith would take a long time so I won't do it here but its just like the entire berserk fanbase despises Griffith and instantly hopes on the Griffith hate-train when he does something "bad" for the greater good, they don't even care if he has a reason or if he was possessed or anything like that. But when Guts does the exact same thing and has abolsutely zero reason behind it except "Urg, I am an angry edge-lord" everybody defends him. Seriously, F Guts.

it is quite nice that rickert survives. Only 4 original members of the Hawks remain.... Our main man Guts. His girl Casca, Griffith who more or less died as well that day..... and Rickert. Still ignorant of it all, regardless of knowing what happened. He wasnt there. He didnt see how bad it was. His time with the hawk suddenly ends with so many questions. Only Guts in an absolute fit of rage, and Casca who just isnt casca anymore.... and only seeing Griffith again when he has a brand new kingdom/band. Poor dude.
Godo, the blacksmith in Dark Souls is like of Andre. Gywn the Lord of Cinder who was nothing before finding the 1st flame; Griffith, who as common and nothing, finding the Egg of an Emperor. Gutts, a soul dark,which signifies humanity at its core. C'mon now. This epic is what upstarted the Dark Souls franchise. Arigatou Miura Kentaro. You started all this.
What a good guy; Rickert started off as kind of an "annoying little brother" type, but it's not long before you warm up to him. Now, he's a decently toned blacksmith who has a bit of a little sister in Erica and had the balls to slap Griffith in the mouth

the way he stands on the battlement and looks after him... in my opinion, griffith *gained* respect for him, as by his own definition, a true friend is someone that follows his own dream
I think one of the key things about Griffith's return (Both at the Tower of Conviction and at Godo's place) is that it reminds Guts and the audience that Griffith is still an ever-present threat, and not only to him. He uses the Kushan invasion as a convenient means to seize his "dream" and it involves the callous use of the people of Midland (and beyond) as his tools. Therefore, while Guts learned that he shouldn't pursue a selfish path of hatred at the cost of those around him, he shouldn't completely ignore his quest of revenge either, because he knows the kind of person Griffith is. If Griffith were simply just chilling with his God Hand buddies and fucking around with humanity at _just_ 216 year intervals, the drive to defeat him wouldn't be as strong.
He basically became a better man than guts rather then let rage consume him he accepts what's happened and is ready to move on forward with his life. In the end he truly a strong person and who knows maybe there is more to his character that we don't know yet who knows ?
Ricket is the unsung hero of Berserk. Bitch slapping Griffith was the easily one of impactful scenes in the series gor me personally anyway. I mortal boy with no special gifts slapped the equivalent of a god.
It's still hard to say whether Griffith has genuinely begun to regain his human emotions since "rescuing" Casca from Guts and Zodd's battle. Might just be the demon baby, or he might just be rationalizing it as the demonbaby... But one day I hope to see him cry tears of bitter anguish once he realizes just how much he lost. Like Godo said to Guts; "You threw away things that were irreplaceable."
I used to hate the younger characters (I was in High School back then back around '03) but, being someone who has read Berserk Manga since the 99/'00 and being so emotionally invested in the story (I swear man, Kentarou Moira had a thing about synchronicity and the manga...it was like an allegory for many experiences I've had) and growing into an adult over the years, and being reminded that life isn't all fucked up by the new generation of my family, I see a little of the new characters in my nieces and nephews. (I know it sounds goofy but...it makes me smile sometimes.) Anyway, this video the things you said summed up the thoughts I've had about Rickert and Isidro and Shierke and all of the young characters. Kinda wish I had done videos about Berserk when I had the chance.
I love how in this manga with assassins, demons, and a man who swings a tree trunk of steel for a sword one of the most notable moments is a dude slapping his former friend
Ricket is essencial in helping Guts to fight Apostles, gave him the iron canon arm, the automatic crossbow and the armor of the black swordsman. The single war of Guts VS the demons was necessary and heroic... he cannot stay with Casca (she cannot see Guts) or Ricket... the demons had come to them and killing them. Hunting the apostles help the world of berserk to get rid of that scum!!!
So far, Skull Knight has only talked to or saved important characters, like Guts, Caska, Luka, and Rickert. I think Rickert survived the eclipse for a causualistic reason. I don't think Guts' behelit is his. I think after Guts and Skull knight put Griffith back in his place, he will rule Falconia and the army of the Hawk.

The importance of Rickert living was so he could give us the best slap in manga history!
When I saw the panel of Rickert slapping Griffith, I was like "Oh no... You brave motherfucker."
It's really shocking that his slap showed so much. Despite hunting for years and always racing towards him in rage, Guts hasn't even laid a finger on Griffith since the Eclipse. And yet Rickert did but not in a killing blow, but a simple gesture of anger and disrespect. He no longer saw Griffith as the White Hawk but as a backstabber who believed everything he accomplished with the Band of the Hawk was worth nothing. And I think, just for a second, it made Griffith feel guilt. Because even though he created a utopia, he made it on the bodies of his own men who he sacrificed. Who minutes before, risked their own lives to save him. And Rickert explained why no matter how perfect Falconia is, it was never worth the cost he paid. And that, seemed to sting Griffith a bit. Funny how just one slap hurt Griffith more than all Guts had done like his attempt at killing him, cursing his very name and killing all who made the similar choice he did.
Rickert is just the best.

Yeah just hearing what happened at the eclipse means shit unless you were there, in was a ocean of blood and organs that spilled all over the place, definitely the darkest event that has happened in berserk, don't know if it will be darkest for all of berserk, but it was fucked up.

Griffith was always so composed but still had moments of vitality and warmth, especially around gatts. Femto looks like he's trying to do his best to imitate a human.The difference is jarring.

No, Rickert is the Krillin of Berserk, in that he represents the bystander's POV to all this horror. He is the emotional conduit that all readers can access, which previously was Judeau pre-Eclipse.

People can say that Casca couldn't handle the events of the eclipse and went insane, but I wonder if that isn't exactly correct. Maybe Griffith violated her mind as well as her body. It may have been an intentional act to prevent Guts from having access to Casca. Essentially specifically denying Guts Casca in the worst possible way. Guts and Casca standing together united would almost certainly be capable of defeating Griffith eventually.
Casca was a highly trained and motivated captain of the band of the Hawk. She had several near misses with being raped before and with Apostles. It seems a bit cheap to say that she wasn't mentally prepared for either of those things. She was a tough as nails, battle hardened warrior. The gore and blood present in the eclipse was extreme but close enough to the wars she participated in. Now the betrayal of Griffith would certainly be shocking, but given that he had already effectively betrayed the band of the hawk by banging the princess, I don't feel like she couldn't have seen it coming. Clearly, Griffith had already acted in his own interest over the band of the hawk.
Casca was all that, but you're forgetting the bit where her and the Hawks were on the run for a year or so which made her physically and mentally exhausted to the point that, when Guts got back, she literally tried to kill herself by making herself plummet down the waterfall.
That, and watching your best friends and comrades get eaten alive, especially Judo's death, and his last words to her....For an entire year she had constant stress and trauma, then saves hawk-boy, finds out that he is entirely disfigured and cripple. No wonder she dissociated from reality, bitch needed a break from all of that shit.
I doubt it was her womanly nature, never really held her back that much before. As you said, that whole year Gutts left, he had down time, and was not under the constant threat of persecution. He was at that point, physically and mentally rested. Unlike Caska, who was under constant threat, I doubt they had much for food or medical supplies either.
Yes, Casca's exhaustion is a fair point, which I elided. However, I think it is a more interesting question to ask why would it would be true that Griffith did it intentionally. He was staring at Guts the whole time. He was intent on stealing Casca from Guts. He had literally just become this powerful spiritual figure. Why wouldn't he try to steal her spiritually as well as physically?
He was a demon at the point he raped her. So I always thought she became corrupted like her and Guts child when it became half demon.

thats true one of the many messages of the story that vengeance and great ambition are a self destructive path shown in the count arc when puck tells the disfigured old man vargas to keep on living and let go of his obsession of killing the count cuz hes wasting his life with nothing to gain and a lot to lose ..vargas agrees but its too late...yet guts insults vargas saying that weaklings should know their place and rat must live like rats but pucks roasts him saying that hes afraid cuz he sees himself in vargas and that he is also fighting a lost battle ..
in someway guts is at the same crossroad that griffith had before the eclipse when he imagined himself taking his wounds and living a peaceful life and letting go of his ambition or pursuing his ambition at the cost of his comrades in guts case vengeance or caska

to see rickert's fate unknown all those years ago when i first watched the original anime left me so sad on top of the already terrible depression i felt for the ones in the eclipse. but the best thing i ever did was actually read Berserk manga about 4 years after watching the show. idk why it took me so long, probably because i didnt like reading at the time. i was so happy to see that he played an important role in the series after the golden age arc.

That's a very good point. Rickert found out the truth whilst Griffith was somewhere he could reach him. Part of Gut's decreasing mental state is the fact he was chasing Griffith for 2 years who wasn't even in our world at the time, essentially chasing shadows.

Good video man I enjoyed it, one thing I dissagree on is when you mentioned that Guts had abandoned all of his morality, its been a while since I've read the older chapters but if I remember correctly he is still a good person, he did have problems for example attacting Caska out of frustration, I think thats why he let others into the group, to help with Caska and to keep an eye on him perhaps, atleast thats what I remember but again good video thanks for sharing.
Guts is not a good person, I used to like him but I completely hate him now. He kills innocent people if they get in the way and calls them ants, he has no dream of his own aside from killing Griffith, he is still as undecided as before on whether he even wants to kill Griffith, he is an aimless child without guidance and he attempted to rape Casca! You can say whatever you want about Guts trying to rape Casca but he did not do it when he was possessed by berserk armor demon or whatever; I read the manga, he was "overcome with lust" and just tried to rape her, after engaging her he became possessed and saw how he would have massacred her and stopped. Guts is literally the very thing he hates, he has become everything he always thought Griffith to be and that is why I love the manga; guts is the bad guy, he has become the very thing he hates most. What most people fail to see is that Griffith is the good guy, to explain my views on Griffith would take a long time so I won't do it here but its just like the entire berserk fanbase despises Griffith and instantly hopes on the Griffith hate-train when he does something "bad" for the greater good, they don't even care if he has a reason or if he was possessed or anything like that. But when Guts does the exact same thing and has abolsutely zero reason behind it except "Urg, I am an angry edge-lord" everybody defends him. Seriously, F Guts.

it is quite nice that rickert survives. Only 4 original members of the Hawks remain.... Our main man Guts. His girl Casca, Griffith who more or less died as well that day..... and Rickert. Still ignorant of it all, regardless of knowing what happened. He wasnt there. He didnt see how bad it was. His time with the hawk suddenly ends with so many questions. Only Guts in an absolute fit of rage, and Casca who just isnt casca anymore.... and only seeing Griffith again when he has a brand new kingdom/band. Poor dude.

Never in the history of all comicdom has one character risen to legendary status so instantly as with that slap.
I think one of the key things about Griffith's return (Both at the Tower of Conviction and at Godo's place) is that it reminds Guts and the audience that Griffith is still an ever-present threat, and not only to him. He uses the Kushan invasion as a convenient means to seize his "dream" and it involves the callous use of the people of Midland (and beyond) as his tools. Therefore, while Guts learned that he shouldn't pursue a selfish path of hatred at the cost of those around him, he shouldn't completely ignore his quest of revenge either, because he knows the kind of person Griffith is. If Griffith were simply just chilling with his God Hand buddies and fucking around with humanity at _just_ 216 year intervals, the drive to defeat him wouldn't be as strong.

Ricket is the unsung hero of Berserk. Bitch slapping Griffith was the easily one of impactful scenes in the series gor me personally anyway. I mortal boy with no special gifts slapped the equivalent of a god.

I used to hate the younger characters (I was in High School back then back around '03) but, being someone who has read Berserk Manga since the 99/'00 and being so emotionally invested in the story (I swear man, Kentarou Moira had a thing about synchronicity and the manga...it was like an allegory for many experiences I've had) and growing into an adult over the years, and being reminded that life isn't all fucked up by the new generation of my family, I see a little of the new characters in my nieces and nephews. (I know it sounds goofy but...it makes me smile sometimes.) Anyway, this video the things you said summed up the thoughts I've had about Rickert and Isidro and Shierke and all of the young characters. Kinda wish I had done videos about Berserk when I had the chance.

Ricket is essencial in helping Guts to fight Apostles, gave him the iron canon arm, the automatic crossbow and the armor of the black swordsman. The single war of Guts VS the demons was necessary and heroic... he cannot stay with Casca (she cannot see Guts) or Ricket... the demons had come to them and killing them. Hunting the apostles help the world of berserk to get rid of that scum!!!
Rickert will be tempted to use the behelit, mark my words.
50 years later
So far, Skull Knight has only talked to or saved important characters, like Guts, Caska, Luka, and Rickert. I think Rickert survived the eclipse for a causualistic reason. I don't think Guts' behelit is his. I think after Guts and Skull knight put Griffith back in his place, he will rule Falconia and the army of the Hawk.
Guts slashing monsters is cool and all. But that pimp slap. Goddamn.
Since Griffith re-emerged to the real world, Rickert dealt more damage to Griffith that Guts could ever be 🤣
