_To Drink From the Night itself_ was intended to be a throw-back to their Peacevile-era records like _With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness,_ which was itself very much an homage to 1980's black metal... right down to the awful, horrific production values. Don't get me wrong _The Burning Darkness_ is a great album, but it sounds like it was recorded on an answering machine that was inside a toilet.

It sounds nasty but still like a record from 2018, you can still understand what's going on. Personally I don't like productions for this kind of music to be too clean, it loses all the character and becomes "sterile", but that's just my opinion.

The good old necro "Morbid Visions" style recorded in the basement of hell (well not quite as necro) that fitted At the Gates old style very well. They were way more technical back then. But in a totally different style to the usual tech-death of the early 90s (Florida). A compromise of Stockholm old school/Bathory blackness/Gothenburger proto-melodeath

I'll put it simple. Discovered ATG late. Saw them open for Behemoth 2 years ago. Their sound blew me away. They are great right now. Don't live in the 25 year old past and see what great people do now. Slaughter is amazing, their later stuff still blows away most death.
Remember back in say 2006 when we all thought we'd never hear these guys again or see them live? Now I have seen them 3 times and waiting for this tour to add a 4th.
I know you are on the hype train but there are bands a million times better heavier and catchier than AtG objectively. Take a look at Mors Principium Est. That is not to say AtG is bad in any way. They have their unique sound too.

Even after all this time, my favourite At The Gates song is Raped By The Light Of Christ, there´s just something magical in it. Brutality buried just under the surface, so you can´t see it, but you feel it and it makes one shiver inside.

At the Gates are awesome guys. Met them back in the 90's when they were touring with Napalm Death. They were a huge influence on my music back then.
