I’m not a pilot, but I have a love of flying because my late uncle (Major, USAF) piloted a B-17 in the Pacific in WW II and became a civilian pilot after the war. When I was about 6 years old my first plane ride was him taking me up and doing engine off/restarts and other drills. I never had do much fun in my life. I remember thinking on my first commercial jet flight at about 8 years old how incredibly boring the flight was. I kept thinking, “when are they going to do something fun?”. To this day I miss the plane dropping with power off as my uncle waits to restart the engine. Much respect to you and everyone in our armed forces. And what an incredible platform the Zulu is. The 6 year old in me would LOVE to experience it from the cockpit.
Hasard, thank you so much for the ride along, this was amazing to see how this awesome Cobra works and the Pilot for all of his knowledge, truth be told, flying rotor wings has been my dream to fly since being a kid, again thank you.
This channel is FUCKING AMAZING. Usually you'd see short clips from jet fighters or mil helis with no commentary or comms whatsoever and only like 1 or 2 angles...BUT THIS CHANNEL HAS IT ALL.
It's easy to compare the apache and the cobra but they both have a purpose and each is more suited to their own role, and the zulu is just a fantastic example of logistics simplicity, reliability, rapid response and range. Though I must admit I prefer the 64 simply on the merit of it having more tools to use on the modern digitized battlefield. Non line of sight engagements and being able to find one's targets with ease, and share those targets in a scalable way is a total force multiplier. I hope this isn't the end of the cobra lineage though, who knows maybe we may eventually see cobras and apaches on the battlefield in their intended roles one day, hopefully it's not needed.
They shouldn’t be compared actually. The Cobra is more of a pure combat support gunship. The Apache was designed for the Cold War as a tank buster and APC buster, more specifically for the former Soviet threat used in a hunter killer team with the Kiowa.
@@Peezy71421I could see any combined apache-viper operations in a potential future conflict going like this: Apache stays high and far, providing cover from AAA, Armor and other big ticket threats. Vipers go in low and fast with the transport helos and provide more accurate and adaptable cover fire for both the other helos and ground forces.
The way things are going, it will be needed, be prepared to step up. The apache being in an expected hot spot, cobras escourt in cooler zones, the US however is more focussed on tip of spear shock and awe with the fixed wings, but war will have these not far behind.
As a former 64 driver I don't agree with the video's title but the Z is an amazing gunship. I would have to admit in CAS the Z is as good if not better than the 64 but it all comes down to the crew.

Definitely a very good looking gunship and deadly too in the hands of USMC crews I imagine, no doubt a bout that! Kudos to the pilot, admitting that the Zulu and Echo Apache make a great team, with each having unique qualities. I wonder if USMC and Army ACAV aircrew do exchange tours in order to get to know each other's platforms and learn how to make best use of them when operating in a combined fashion. Would love to see them working closely together!
Unfortunately, there aren't any exchanges between the US Army and USMC attack units. The closest I've heard of in recent years was some 64E Instructor Pilot going to the USMC weapons and tactics Instructor couse.
A couple years ago I was lucky enough to walk around and take some photos of some USMC helis that had stopped for a refueling in Albuquerque. My favorite part of seeing the AH-1Z up close was the "HIGH POWER LASER ; DO NOT AIM AT PERSONNEL" warning stenciled on the targeting camera. I've always found it pretty comical looking back. Great video, I really enjoyed the watch!
Well the Apache doesn't have the defensive air-to-air capability the Viper does so in my opinion that would make the Viper "deadlier." I'm also former USMC though so definitely biased. Edit: I didn't consider the Apache's 30mm compared to Viper's 20mm...so, maybe it's a tie? Haha
It's hard to go off just based on numbers as in theory and on paper the two are similar and the zulu looks a bit better because it's faster and has a longer range. The main difference these days is the hover performance, practical load carrying ability, and the big one is systems. Each tool is meant for a different job, with the apache acting more as a maneuver element intended to operate ahead of the front line, where it needs to find it's targets on it's own and where low speed maneuverability, load carrying ability, sensor capability and stealth are more important. It can use the radar to scan, set prifire and nofire zones, share that data with all the members of it's flight, and carry out a non line of sight engagement. The cobra however is operated as a support element by the USMC, with them being either held in a pattern or in a ready position so they can scramble and get in the air to respond to fire support requests. They operate more on the front line where they would be more easily spotted, and where speed and response times are more important than carrying a full load of 16 missiles or whatnot. It may not control its own drones or have a fire control radar, but it doesn't need them, it's not really finding it's own targets, but rather being used to hit known positions, to escort friendly ground or air elements and support troops on the front line. Technically the apache has more practical lethality as it has the load carrying ability to carry all 16 missiles without needing to take as little fuel, and it's sensors and data linking makes it more potent on the digital battlefield. However it's like comparing a scalpel to a sword. Sure, they both cut things, but one has a very different use from the other. In short... It depends on what you are doing, when you are doing it and where you are. If you are an infantryman on the front, you'd probably be hoping for cobras because they will get to you sooner and stay longer. If you are planning, you might prefer the apache as it would be roaming beyond the line to make sure as little things reach the front line in the first place. Reactive and proactive.

@@MrGimmethreesteps Apache just isn't made for carriers like the Cobra/Viper is, so it would also require an expensive upgrade package to be carrier capable. In 70-71 in Vietnam I served in the MRF (U.S. "brown-water Navy" Mobile Riverine Force). A few times a month we would assist on the Army's search and destroy missions, the USA taking out VC bunkers and encampments. The Army missions on which we assisted were carried out with two to three first-generation Cobras. I have etched in my memory Cobras attacking in "figure 8" patterns, gaining some altitude, then sharply descending on the attack. What a marvelous sight that always was, especially the huge KABOOM when the pilot hit an ammo cache. Quite amazing to see those Cobras in action, especially for a just-turned-18-year-old and way way before the days of UA-cam and Call of Duty.

The 360 Invictus is one of five competing designs from Bell, AVX Aircraft, Boeing, Karem Aircraft, and Sikorsky to replace the Army's fleet of Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters. To meet or exceed the competition requirements and timeline, Bell drew on its experience on the Kiowa Warrior as well as the Future Vertical Lift (FVL) project as part of the Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstration (JMR TD) to produce a small, inexpensive streamlined airframe..
This was some of the most awesome aircraft footage, both inside the cabin, and in attack mode on UA-cam today. And although yes, terrifying being in combat, this still has to be some of the most fun a human being can experience in their entire lives, piloting one of these incredible combat machines. This ain't your old Grandpappy's flying in WWII where it took brute strength and guts! This type flying is the king of the electronic age, where you not only need to be able to fly these incredible machines under stressful direct fire combat conditions, but you also need to know how to push 1,000 different buttons, levers, and switches, monitor an entire suite of weapons, listen to hectic radio traffic, all the while not getting yourself shot out of the sky by everything that's bad in the night that wan't s to kill you! Kudos to the men and women who fly the combat aircraft of today's air forces because they truly are the cream of the crop when it comes to being a skilled pilot. Only the very very very best make it into the cockpit of an F-35 fighter get. You probably just about need a PHD to even pilot one of those things. I can see why the pilots are so good at it since they grew up in the age of sophisticated video games that are pretty darned good simulators in their own right. The rapidness and sophistication of playing difficult video games prepares a lot of these new pilots and electronic warfare officers (just as an important position as the pilot themselves) in their future roles in the United States Armed Forces as Pilots and Co-Pilot/Electronic Warfare/Weapons Systems Officer. Imagine an F-35 pilot or F-22 Raptor Pilot which are single seat aircraft meaning they have to DO IT ALL! Pilot, monitor systems, input complex information into the computers, navigate, you truly almost need a PHD in astrophysics to even fly one of these new fangled machines. And there are far more complex aircraft under development that make even the F-35 pale in comparison. Aviation is still innovating so rapidly, it's hard to comprehend. Soon, electric powered Jumbo Jets! Those are under development. Flying cars, pods, etc. will be much more common just 50 years into the future. Personal transportation (like our cars today) is a huge area underdevelopment.
I hope this generation is a LOT quieter than grandpa's. Marines used to train for Vietnam out of a base here in SoCal and when they came back from a training mission we could hear them approaching out of the Cleveland National Forest long before they came over the last hills into the suburban valley. Those things couldn't sneak up on anybody.
I worked on the Apache Longbow program at Boeing for three years and from what I saw it's a good weapons platform but very maintenance intensive. It take more than 300 support troops on the ground to keep one of them in the air. A logistical nightmare. My personal opinion is the 1Z can be better deployed and maintained from Navy ships with all the shops, materials and personal to support them onboard.
And the guy you work for, is this Biggest Lunatic and Incompetent President We've Ever Had. HIs Joint Chiefs? OMG. I dont know how you get out of Bed in the Morning and get motivated to work and Fly. Stolen from us over in PA! LoL!
So chill talking and offering up detailed thoughts whilst on mission.
This old Marine"03 walk-a-lot" loves the Red Dog Zulu Cobra video. The Viper is a great asset for the Corp. It causes me to wish I was flying the Z. Thanks.
Best video you have produced with the platform, ICS comms (interview) and the video angles. Thanks for sharing!
Glad we are on the same team! Great vid!
Really liked those acronym pop up windows, no trouble reading anything at all. Most times it's just white letters with no contrasting back ground, but yours had a subtle black or smoke back ground and made the letters totally readable very easy on the eyes.
How often do these aircraft fire AIM-9's in training missions?
I’ve watched a lot of military videos, and I can tell you the organization and training in our military is exceptional, not a single country even comes close to our capabilities.
I always liked the cobra more than the apache becuz of its sleek design.
Dude this was so cool!!! You pilots are incredible!
Fit Via Vi is the squadron motto for HMLA-773 it translates to strength is the way, and it’s a pleasure to see that motto carried out in a clear manner. From all my brothers at the Red Dogs thank you for this amazing content. Semper fi.
I know I might be at the bottom of the list, but dude, I look up to you so much and thank you for your service 😊
"Reach out and touch somebody"
Pilots understatement is always so slick!🥳
I remember seeing a cobra on the ground at an air show as a kid. I instantly thought it was the coolest looking thing ever. So awesome watching it in action
Good to see my Fellow Brother who keeps and kept us Grunts safe !!! Your dedication is greatly appreciated
Reach out and touch someone at 8km? KA-52 can reach 12km. Also Hasard I've actually been developing a Co-op game based on the AH-1Z Viper on Unreal Engine 5. I'm close to releasing a demo and this video allows me to include more realistic elements to the game! Thanks and that looked like fun!
US understatement vs Russian exaggeration.
First time?
@@tdolan500 Typical American response lmfao Exaggeration? buddy you must be off the sauce. Stop believing whatever NATO tries to tell you. Facts are facts, you believe in fallacies. Do some research instead of googling "is russian equipment bad" or believing every anti -russian video you stumble across, bigot.
Hasard, you raised the bar again.
Badass! When is this coming to DCS?
The Apache has A pilot/CPG team. Both individuals can do the other's job, but the front seat is specifically designed to bring the hate. The Viper is Pure in-line interchangeability, both seats get the same view, the same screens, the same controls. Back seat needs a break from flying? Front seat's got it. Front seat needs to fly it? Back seat has an identical weapons control.
I love the camera work from the various helis in your group.
Excellent! Thank you for your service!
Thank you for providing a view/an insight into a world previously restricted to a small few.
Very cool interview! And nicely edited.
Making an Aunt proud ❤
Incredible video, Hazard. It's going to be hard to top this video, so I look forward to what you have coming up.
That was badass! Thanks for sharing that 👍😎
The Zulus are absolutely bad-ass.
Thank you gentlemen and ladies of our military. Great view into one discipline of many, that protect.
Wow what a great video. One of your best. The way the conversation naturally rolled out over the course of the training exercise was such a cool format. Thanks for all your great insight into aviation.
Man I know he really wanted to say.....F the Apache.
Bad ass helicopter has it all. Including a coat hanger for the tuxedo jacket.
Fantastic video!
Wow this channel just getting more and more amazing from pilot perspective in multiple aircraft’s
Can’t wait o see more content keep it up
Great experience! Hasard is loving it as always. The Best.
You guys are awesome thank you for your service God bless you all
I love the Viper from the cockpits action and dialog.viseo Its like I'm right there in the cockpit with the air crew. Simper Fi Red dog.
My brother was a Whiskey Cobra driver,...coolest dude I have ever known :)
Shout outs from Summerville,SC. Keep making us proud Josh! 🙏🏼
Hasard, lovin the rotor wing footage mate great to see the cobra in action.
Superb Video! Loved it! What a Beast of a machine that Cobra is.
Feeling lucky with the heaters on the wingtips, hah.
I was a Red Dog in Atlanta from 2005-2008. We had Whiskeys and Novembers back then. I loved severing in HMLA’s for 20 years!
Quite a ride along. Those sky grunts don't like to lose.
those HMD are real cool, love the look
Great video! Nice production and cover of information. Always wondered about the Cobra.👍Thanks for taking us along.
A c-130 gun ship is a badass too
Now make the same scenario with the AH-64 please! So much expected one!
And the guy you work for, is this Biggest Lunatic and Incompetent President We've Ever Had. HIs Joint Chiefs? OMG. I dont know how you get out of Bed in the Morning and get motivated to work and Fly. That is at least an Admirable trait, but those people in D.C. do NOT have your Back, Dude. I NEVER Say Im a VET Anymore (outside of this comment) because I'm Embarrassed about what the Military has Become. I just HOPE Your C.O. Hasn't demanded that you wear a Skirt and High Heels in the cockpit. God's Speed and Blessings. HooAh.
Great video . Looks like incredibly smooth ride . Incredibly lethal . Glad they are on our side
Great vid…very professional, well done. Marines chose well to upgrade their AH and UH fleets…I’m retired Army, so love my Apache/Blackhawk helos. Love the Marine and Army aviator ethos…combine arms teammates and the ultimate customer is the guy on the ground, the grunt, the crunchy. Thanks for sharing, love it!
I would like to know more about the comparison between the latest versions of the Apache and Cobra.
This was awesome. I love my Helicopters. You need to get up In the Apache, But love the AH-1Z Viper.
That's a weird looking Apache.
superb mister
My favorite helicopter of all time.
Damn DCS really stepped up their graphics
Out of all the aircraft in the military, this one would be the bucket list ride for me! CAS King!
This is my cousin ! Awesome video, job well done both of you guys!!
glad to see they are still working to keep the USMC in equipment that is still relevant today. Seems not long ago there were a lot of complaints about antiquated tech. Charles
Hey now us Grunts made a feared reputation for ourselves using antiquated tech !!! If we didn't have it we would acquire it in one shape of fashion !!!
