I think they also understand and appreciate that this movie is a tribute to them and their service as well. The movie might not be 100% accurate/realistic but it shines a light on and glorifies US pilots none the less.

Funny story, my father's original callsign was Maverick. AGM-65 having a malfunction and ripping the pylon off the F-4 will get you that callsign lol. So his first assignment was flying F-4s out of Udorn, Thailand at the tailend of Vietnam. Few years later he gets a billet to Fighter Weapons School and then is offered to stay on as an instructor. Fast forward to 94 and he was the OPS Group commander at Osan and Tom Cruise comes to the base doing a USO tour and for the Planet Hollywood Seoul opening. The typical VIP meet and greet happens and Tom comes to shake my hand and in front of the Wing Commander, Vice Wing Commander, 36th and 25th Squadron Commanders and a bunch of the pilots I call Tom Cruise an asshole for forcing my father to change his callsign. After Top Gun came out no self respecting Fighter Weapons school graduate and instructor could have that callsign. My father waited until he had taken over the 511th TFS at RAF Alconbury in '89 to change his callsign to Irish because nobody could stop him or give him hell for changing it lol. Tom was a sport about it and the popcorn machine he bought for the 36th is there to this day. My neighbor had just come to Hampton Roads from Osan flying vipers in the 36th so he was surprised I knew about the popcorn machine and the story behind it lol.

I'd assume a lot of creative freedom had to be taken. I don't ever recall there being such a thing as GPS jamming. Even if there was, F-35s could still be used.
@@Monarch683 GPS jamming exists, the Russians have mobile jammers the size of a moving van. They are reported to be reducing the accuracy of the JDAM's and other GPS guided munitions we've given the Ukrainians as well as the GPS based nav systems
@@pogo1140 Yes, but when the launching aircraft uses a sensor like TGP or radar to get an accurate position of the target relative to itself, the INS of JDAMs can be accurate enough to still hit within ideal CEP.

You see a pilot playing darts. He hits bullseye first time. Then his friend covers his eyes and you don't see the outcome.
He also turns away while sinking a pool ball. I'm betting he snuck a missile up on that SU57 because he eyeballed it and never used his fire control radar.

I am no pilot, I was maintenance (avionics). I was lucky enough to get a backseat ride in an f16 while tdy. We stripped it down and pulled 9.2gs. Didn’t pass out but I was so close. It was only for a few seconds max and only knew it went there from the hud tape. It was the best 40ish minutes of my life. Went Mach and then found out the air brakes work really well as my head almost went into the ASHM. Tail number 169, bang bus! 524FS hounds baby!
There is an air base in my city. And I've had the chance to watch this movie with real fighter pilots. How did I know they were fighter pilots? They made it very clear in the cinema (they entered the cinema in a flight of arms and came out in a flight of arms when they were leaving.) I wish you could see the brightness in their eyes and their cheerfulness like a child while watching this movie!
Can’t really split the throttles to that extreme in the F-14A, if any at all. Those TF30s will bite you in the ass. Wish they would’ve kept the wings swept forward more in the dogfight. It’s weird seeing an F-14 executing tight maneuvers with 68 degrees of sweep. They should’ve listened to some of Snort Snodgrass’s stories and used some of that material 😁
i've heard stories of f14's using split throttles but it was a pretty advanced technique that most guys never touched, i gotta imagine they knew that and only split them that far for camera effect, another youtuber who was an f14 RIO actually did the maneuver from the movie in dcs to call it out, all it does as presented in the movie is create an aileron roll, not the pivot maneuver they showed
Ward Carroll… love his vids! Yeah it was possible to split the throttles in the B and the D models with the GE engines, but not the A. Don’t think they really needed to do it either with how much rudder authority the Tomcat had. The rudder could help swing and point the nose pretty quickly in a pinch, especially when it was rolling over the top.
@@sledgehammerk35 yeah it's late and I blanked on his name, I think it was an interview with another tomcat pilot he did who mentioned a maneuver they used of pointing straight up until stalling, then push the nose over at almost no airspeed to get a "pivot in place" maneuver that's much closer to what the movie did, but again it didn't work in all models, the pilot interviewed was showing it to a student and the new sub model of the B they were in flat spun, it does work in DCS though...
I wish you guy had addressed 2 things 1) was their a better way to pull off this mission other than super hornets? I tend to think so. 2) the tandem targets runs. Do you REALLY need one plane to laser the target to have a second plane hit it? Especially at that range? Why risk 4 planes and 6 lives when you just do it with 2?
F14 is still one of my favorite planes. P47 being my favorite. SR71 my 3rd fav. I love big planes that take a beating and kick ass. My uncle served on the Nimitz as a Tomahawk mechanic. Even after all that still his favorite plane. I wonder if Hasard or the other guy got to drive one before they were retired. My son, E6 in the Air Force, got to go up in an F16 out of Las Vegas. Pilot let him drive for a bit. He’s got his license now trying to become an officer and fly tankers.

Ward Carroll said that on an A-Model Tomcat like that one was, "splitting the throttles" would've 100% compressor stalled the aircraft. It also showed the F-14 with ailerons, which he took issue with, seeing as *it doesn't have them*.
F-14 does not have ailerons, the correct image should have had the spoilers on the down ward moving wing be in the open position but the flaps would be up

Here's a good question. Has anyone ever suggested a remote override for the ejection seat of the pilot who is on g-lock? Is that too much of a liability issue?
I believe that it is possible to make an autopilot that will understand that the pilot has lost consciousness. The autopilot will take control of the aircraft and maintain altitude. At least on training planes.
One thing I found out is that Tom Cruise actually owns and flies a L39 Albatross and a P-51 Mustang and liscensed for helicopter and for acrobatic. He didn't get to fly F18... he asked but Navy turned him down so he didn't actually fly it but pretty sure he could no problem.

At the beginning... Maverick ejected from the DarkStar at Mach-10. He would have been obliterated. At the end... the final mission was silly, because they would have had assets in the battlespace to neutralize those SAM sites. EA-6B Prowlers used to do it, now the NAVY uses Growlers, and the Marines use the F-35's. I would also expect some type of Command & Control aircraft up high, like an AWACS or a Rivet-Joint. ( Being protected by F-22 escorts. )
Look up Bill Weaver, he survived his SR-71 disintegrating without ejecting, he was extremely lucky that his air wasn't disconnected when the plane broke apart, but his copilot didn't survive.
I'm thinking the Darkstar had ejection similar to the F111, where the entire cockpit is separated from the fuselage rather than just the seat. With how the cockpit is designed, that sort of ejection would work
@@skyraider87 That's the only way to do it. After it slows down, deploy a small drag chute. Once it slows down to a safe point, the seat then separates from the cockpit, and a larger chute deploys. 3-stage process.

My dad was ordinence in the navy, my grand father commanded a sub in WW2 in the navy, and i almost joined the navy in 1993 out of high school. My dream was to always be a pilot, growin up, but when i was 18, i had a problem with authority 😂 I'm 48 now, but my favorite jet still to this day is the F4. Grew up loving that thing. Then iron eagle and top gun came out. Love the 14s and 16s. But the F4 will always be my favorite. But i love how you disect these monemts in this movie. Which i haven't even seen yet. Waiting for it to come out on regular tv 😂😂
The fact that every actor was in actual jets is what is crazy to me. Of course they're not the ones doing the maneuvers, although Tom Cruise may have due to his numerous licenses, everyone else is acting behind actual G's which is insane to me.

Fascinating video. id like to know what the F35 is like to fly. People say its easy. That always seems to be said about new planes. Apparently typhoon fly themselves but now the F35 is here apparently the typhoon is harder to fly. And how does it work with hover ability. Is that extra challenge to master as ive seen a F35 when that crashed at fort worth on you tube. Fortunately pilot was skilled and got out ok.
I remember in our Bush War of 86/87 in Angola we captured a complete SAM-8 system. The US went crazy and pleaded that we give it to them. I am talking about the SADF fighting a proxy war against communism in Angola. Us, the South Africans took out more tanks and soldiers ever. Our G-5 155mm artillery systems were taking out those massive Antinoves on the runway!!! If I remember correctly we took out 3. Our artillery and 122mm rockes were shooting non stop for 24 hours at a time. Go and look for the Battle of Cuito Canavalle against the Angolans, Cubans, Russians etc. This was the biggest Tank Battle ever in Africa, surpassing WW2 and Rommel. I actually just wanted to tell you about the SAM-8 system and got carried away 😂😂😂.

I recommend you to start looking into Flight Simulators (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020) and learn as much as you can, and get your PPL (Private Pilot License). You have 3 options to become an Air Force Officer: 1) Complete a 4 year University 2) AFROTC while attending a 4 year university. 3) Air Force Academy in Colorado You must pass the AFOQT (I believe you can only get 2 chances if I recall correctly) U.S. Air Force fighter call signs are given at naming ceremonies or “namings.”

The other guy gave good advice. It's definitely smart to start learning the basics of aerodynamics. I genuinely don't know how the process would be to join the RAF. U.S Air Force, and US Navy pilots are officers. Officers in our military are required to be U.S. citizens. If it's something you are really passionate about, you could probably apply to some universities in the U.S and try to obtain your citizenship. I would think the UK would be one of the easier countries to do so from. Once in university here, you could probably work closely with a USAF or USN recruiter.I would say if it is that important to you, to check out the qualifications prior to doing anything. I tried to commission as a Naval Aviator after college/university, but my vision was too bad. You got lots of options, though. If you want to stay in the UK, there are still plenty of flight opportunities. I don't know the RAF and Royal Navy fleet sizes. But I'm sure they are fairly large.

@@samakers9225 you can fly for the USAF, but you have to be a US citizen or a permanent resident (can take up to 3 years to get the residency, and 5 years to become a US citizen). If you immigrate to the US early between age 18-22, the better because there are age limits to become pilot in the US armed forces. If you want the easiest route to become a pilot, you can join the US Army Branch. You just need to be 18 years old or older with a high school diploma (no college or university degree needed). Keep in mind, you won’t be flying fighter jets in the US Army, but you will fly helicopters (Black Hawk Utility Helicopter UH/HH-60. Cheyenne Attack Helicopter AH-56. Comanche Helicopter RAH-66. Lakota UH-72A Light Utility Helicopter (LUH)). If you manage to get your Private Pilot License (check with your local flight school near you), the better your chances to get the pilot slot in the military whether in UK or the USA. Also if you want to go an extra mile (kilometer), get Instrument Flight Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Commercial License, and Certified Flight Instructor. These are just extras, but Private Pilot License is good enough. Major plot hole... why execute a high g manouver to bomb a site only to need an even higher g manouver to exfil right into known SAM positions... just coast in, perform a slow speed bomb run, turn your a55 around and exfil on the infil flight path that seemed to work so effectively in the first place...

Top Gun, both movies were really awesome. Now granted, they are not going to have everything 100% correct. Hollyweirds are going to make it as close to being as real as it can be, but I believe due to security reasons, they can't show everything fully. But great video between you both, giving expertise on the difference between real life and movie. God bless all our men and women in our Military and our allies. I wanted to hear some commentary on their mission. I was watching the movie, hearing the briefing where all they had to do was fly down into a low area, drop a bomb, and then go back up again. They're talking about it like it's so hard where really it's just low flying. It's not that hard. Why couldn't they have just dropped a bomb from 30k feet?

Where’s the Kvochur’s Bell (the modified Cobra and rotating like a clock) reaction during the F-14 vs. Su-57? I don’t care how unrealistic and theatrical the maneuver was, it was epic.
My question is, could a first generation F14, underpowered and all take on a 5th gen fighter and for lack of a better term tie that fighter in a fight. I remember reading General Yaegers book and him talking about pilot vs plane. Could a pilot that was teethed on the F14 win? That doesnt take into account the F14 maintenance level or the Iranian pilots fighter training. Since the F14 was only ever sold to iran and i suspect the iranians will never see the su57 in their arsenal could a "Maverick" level pilot survive?
The air defense system should not see flares, it only sees the aircraft. This is the original mistake of the film, there is no point in looking for logic.

Well, that's the difference between ordinary Air Force pilots and Tog Gun Naval aviators. A short term trained Naval aviator is better on his worst day than the best of the other branches on a perfect day.
Why were the SAM not taken out with the missile attack? I though it was to direct the support planes towards the airfield to protect? Then I guess no spare F 18 missile left over to shoot them. I think a 5th plane could have gone.

@@sledgehammerk35 yeah it's late and I blanked on his name, I think it was an interview with another tomcat pilot he did who mentioned a maneuver they used of pointing straight up until stalling, then push the nose over at almost no airspeed to get a "pivot in place" maneuver that's much closer to what the movie did, but again it didn't work in all models, the pilot interviewed was showing it to a student and the new sub model of the B they were in flat spun, it does work in DCS though...
You may be able to do more in F-14's today. The Iranians have been upgrading the radars and building new parts to keep theirs flying for decades now.

I wish you guy had addressed 2 things 1) was their a better way to pull off this mission other than super hornets? I tend to think so. 2) the tandem targets runs. Do you REALLY need one plane to laser the target to have a second plane hit it? Especially at that range? Why risk 4 planes and 6 lives when you just do it with 2?
F14 is still one of my favorite planes. P47 being my favorite. SR71 my 3rd fav. I love big planes that take a beating and kick ass. My uncle served on the Nimitz as a Tomahawk mechanic. Even after all that still his favorite plane. I wonder if Hasard or the other guy got to drive one before they were retired. My son, E6 in the Air Force, got to go up in an F16 out of Las Vegas. Pilot let him drive for a bit. He’s got his license now trying to become an officer and fly tankers.

Ward Carroll said that on an A-Model Tomcat like that one was, "splitting the throttles" would've 100% compressor stalled the aircraft. It also showed the F-14 with ailerons, which he took issue with, seeing as *it doesn't have them*.
F-14 does not have ailerons, the correct image should have had the spoilers on the down ward moving wing be in the open position but the flaps would be up

Here's a good question. Has anyone ever suggested a remote override for the ejection seat of the pilot who is on g-lock? Is that too much of a liability issue?
I believe that it is possible to make an autopilot that will understand that the pilot has lost consciousness. The autopilot will take control of the aircraft and maintain altitude. At least on training planes.

One thing I found out is that Tom Cruise actually owns and flies a L39 Albatross and a P-51 Mustang and liscensed for helicopter and for acrobatic.
He didn't get to fly F18... he asked but Navy turned him down so he didn't actually fly it but pretty sure he could no problem.

Late Block F-16s and F-35s have AUTO GCAS now.
Only a few of the f model Hornets have auto G-CAS.
F-22A also has AUTO GCAS being installed in the fleet.

At the beginning... Maverick ejected from the DarkStar at Mach-10. He would have been obliterated.
At the end... the final mission was silly, because they would have had assets in the battlespace to neutralize those SAM sites.
EA-6B Prowlers used to do it, now the NAVY uses Growlers, and the Marines use the F-35's. I would also expect some type of Command & Control aircraft up high, like an AWACS or a Rivet-Joint. ( Being protected by F-22 escorts. )
Look up Bill Weaver, he survived his SR-71 disintegrating without ejecting, he was extremely lucky that his air wasn't disconnected when the plane broke apart, but his copilot didn't survive.

I'm thinking the Darkstar had ejection similar to the F111, where the entire cockpit is separated from the fuselage rather than just the seat. With how the cockpit is designed, that sort of ejection would work
@@skyraider87 That's the only way to do it. After it slows down, deploy a small drag chute. Once it slows down to a safe point, the seat then separates from the cockpit, and a larger chute deploys. 3-stage process.

Really like this video and the 2 of you guy's input in to what actually happens in the air. 1st off Thank you to both of you for your service to our country. My dad was ordinence in the navy, my grand father commanded a sub in WW2 in the navy, and i almost joined the navy in 1993 out of high school. My dream was to always be a pilot, growin up, but when i was 18, i had a problem with authority 😂 I'm 48 now, but my favorite jet still to this day is the F4. Grew up loving that thing. Then iron eagle and top gun came out. Love the 14s and 16s. But the F4 will always be my favorite. But i love how you disect these monemts in this movie. Which i haven't even seen yet. Waiting for it to come out on regular tv 😂😂
The fact that every actor was in actual jets is what is crazy to me. Of course they're not the ones doing the maneuvers, although Tom Cruise may have due to his numerous licenses, everyone else is acting behind actual G's which is insane to me.
Nope, Cruise wasn't allowed either to fly, he does not have the necessary training in the F/A-18F.
@@Cinkodacscorrect, only plane he flew in the movie was the P-51 at the end since that's his personal plane. Everything else he's either in the back seat for actual flight or sitting on the ground pretending to fly

Fascinating video. id like to know what the F35 is like to fly. People say its easy. That always seems to be said about new planes. Apparently typhoon fly themselves but now the F35 is here apparently the typhoon is harder to fly. And how does it work with hover ability. Is that extra challenge to master as ive seen a F35 when that crashed at fort worth on you tube. Fortunately pilot was skilled and got out ok.
I remember in our Bush War of 86/87 in Angola we captured a complete SAM-8 system. The US went crazy and pleaded that we give it to them. I am talking about the SADF fighting a proxy war against communism in Angola. Us, the South Africans took out more tanks and soldiers ever. Our G-5 155mm artillery systems were taking out those massive Antinoves on the runway!!! If I remember correctly we took out 3. Our artillery and 122mm rockes were shooting non stop for 24 hours at a time. Go and look for the Battle of Cuito Canavalle against the Angolans, Cubans, Russians etc. This was the biggest Tank Battle ever in Africa, surpassing WW2 and Rommel.
I actually just wanted to tell you about the SAM-8 system and got carried away 😂😂😂.

I recommend you to start looking into Flight Simulators (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020) and learn as much as you can, and get your PPL (Private Pilot License).
You have 3 options to become an Air Force Officer:
1) Complete a 4 year University
2) AFROTC while attending a 4 year university.
3) Air Force Academy in Colorado
You must pass the AFOQT (I believe you can only get 2 chances if I recall correctly)
U.S. Air Force fighter call signs are given at naming ceremonies or “namings.”

The other guy gave good advice. It's definitely smart to start learning the basics of aerodynamics. I genuinely don't know how the process would be to join the RAF. U.S Air Force, and US Navy pilots are officers. Officers in our military are required to be U.S. citizens. If it's something you are really passionate about, you could probably apply to some universities in the U.S and try to obtain your citizenship. I would think the UK would be one of the easier countries to do so from. Once in university here, you could probably work closely with a USAF or USN recruiter.I would say if it is that important to you, to check out the qualifications prior to doing anything. I tried to commission as a Naval Aviator after college/university, but my vision was too bad. You got lots of options, though. If you want to stay in the UK, there are still plenty of flight opportunities. I don't know the RAF and Royal Navy fleet sizes. But I'm sure they are fairly large.

@@samakers9225 you can fly for the USAF, but you have to be a US citizen or a permanent resident (can take up to 3 years to get the residency, and 5 years to become a US citizen). If you immigrate to the US early between age 18-22, the better because there are age limits to become pilot in the US armed forces.
If you want the easiest route to become a pilot, you can join the US Army Branch. You just need to be 18 years old or older with a high school diploma (no college or university degree needed). Keep in mind, you won’t be flying fighter jets in the US Army, but you will fly helicopters (Black Hawk Utility Helicopter UH/HH-60. Cheyenne Attack Helicopter AH-56. Comanche Helicopter RAH-66. Lakota UH-72A Light Utility Helicopter (LUH)).
If you manage to get your Private Pilot License (check with your local flight school near you), the better your chances to get the pilot slot in the military whether in UK or the USA. Also if you want to go an extra mile (kilometer), get Instrument Flight Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Commercial License, and Certified Flight Instructor. These are just extras, but Private Pilot License is good enough.

I also loved the "Russians are all in on their fleet of 5th Gen fighters." It doesn't hurt my feelings knowing that the "Felons" are having all kinds of mfg problems etc. Especially after all the bad press the 22 ("The French shot one down in a bi-plane) and the 35 (jeez take your pick of slams, and it is a beautiful plane with a different mission set and still I wouldn't want one anywhere near me!) Major plot hole... why execute a high g manouver to bomb a site only to need an even higher g manouver to exfil right into known SAM positions... just coast in, perform a slow speed bomb run, turn your a55 around and exfil on the infil flight path that seemed to work so effectively in the first place...

Top Gun, both movies were really awesome. Now granted, they are not going to have everything 100% correct. Hollyweirds are going to make it as close to being as real as it can be, but I believe due to security reasons, they can't show everything fully. But great video between you both, giving expertise on the difference between real life and movie. God bless all our men and women in our Military and our allies. Always we need to stay ahead of all nations in military technology!
I wanted to hear some commentary on their mission. I was watching the movie, hearing the briefing where all they had to do was fly down into a low area, drop a bomb, and then go back up again. They're talking about it like it's so hard where really it's just low flying. It's not that hard. Why couldn't they have just dropped a bomb from 30k feet?

Where’s the Kvochur’s Bell (the modified Cobra and rotating like a clock) reaction during the F-14 vs. Su-57? I don’t care how unrealistic and theatrical the maneuver was, it was epic.
My question is, could a first generation F14, underpowered and all take on a 5th gen fighter and for lack of a better term tie that fighter in a fight. I remember reading General Yaegers book and him talking about pilot vs plane. Could a pilot that was teethed on the F14 win? That doesnt take into account the F14 maintenance level or the Iranian pilots fighter training. Since the F14 was only ever sold to iran and i suspect the iranians will never see the su57 in their arsenal could a "Maverick" level pilot survive?

The air defense system should not see flares, it only sees the aircraft. This is the original mistake of the film, there is no point in looking for logic.

Well, that's the difference between ordinary Air Force pilots and Tog Gun Naval aviators. A short term trained Naval aviator is better on his worst day than the best of the other branches on a perfect day.
Why were the SAM not taken out with the missile attack? I though it was to direct the support planes towards the airfield to protect? Then I guess no spare F 18 missile left over to shoot them. I think a 5th plane could have gone.
