My top 5:
5. At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
4. Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
3. Desultory - Bitterness
2. In Flames - The Jester Race
1. Entombed - Left Hand Patch
Sick top 5 dude 👍🤘
I graduated high school in 1990 and Entombed was my jam! 52 now and that Stockholm sound is still with me!
I was 16 in that golden year of OSDM 1991 just gobbling up everything that hit the shelves. Sweden had something special going on for sure. All hail the buzzsaw!
One of the greatest guitar tones of all time 🤘🤘
Love those bands. At The Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquility are so good. Each band has released a top notch album recently.
Hell yeah, man 💪🤘
I think there's one very important band (Or person). Dan Swanö/Edge Of Sanity, he's a forefather to most progressive death from sweden, Opeth, Katatonia etc etc. He's also one of the most important producers in terms of heavy music.
Thanks for watching, man!!!
Slaughter of the Soul made me fall in love with death metal. Can’t say enough good things about the Jester Race and Whoracle. Maybe cover Edge of Sanity and Dan Swano and his impact on the Swedish scene soon?
Thanks for watching, man! And thank you for the reccomendation 🤘
This was an excellent breakdown of the Swedish death metal scene. You provide a lot of context that most Americans like myself probably didn’t have growing up across the pond so to speak. My ONLY criticism is that you didn’t mention Arch Enemy, a band so incredibly influential for me along with In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Their first three albums with Johan Liiva were amazing, Chris Amott’s brilliant solos… I could go on. Great video though!
Thanks for watching, man! That's definitely a legendary band that I missed
I’ve been involved in the Death Metal scene sense the early 80s and you have educated me with this video!
Thank you for posting!
Thanks for watching, man!!!!!
If you want to hear where the chainsaw guitar tone was invented, you might wanna check out Slaughter “Strappado”.
Thank you for this video!!
A million years ago, I came across a copy of a CD entitled "Metal Militia - A tribute to Metallica", it is an understatement to say the final two songs changed my musical taste forever: Eye Of The Beholder (In Flames) & My Friend Of Misery (Dark Tranquility).
Dark Tranquillity has been ever since my absolute favorite band, I will be seeing them live for like the 10th time when they play in Guadalajara, Mx, next April 14th.
Personally, it would be 2 - Jester Race / 1 - Gallery, but I fully agree. We can trace back all the great current Death Melodeath, Technical Death, Progressive Death, etc etc bands back to what At The Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity did in the early 90s.
Thank you for sharing that! I've never heard those covers and I'll check em out ASAP!
Edge Of Sanity, Old In Flames, Dismember, Old Dark Tranquility, Old At The Gates, Dawn, Dissection, Entombed, Vomitory, Grave, Carnage, Old Arch Enemy, Unleashed, Dimension Zero, Hypocrisy, Entrails, Grotesque, Nihilist, Desultory, Nirvana 2002, Necrophobic, Bloodbath, Death Breath, Old Soilwork, Eucharist, Gates of Ishtar, Old Katatonia, Unanimated, Vinterland, Sacramentum, Spawn Of Possession, Therion, Ceremonial Oath, etc etc. Those are all my favorite swedeath bands.
That's a lot of bands bro 👀👀
Give the album "Handful of Nothing" by Ebony Tears an honest listen. If there was a Gothenburg style album to rival the bleak intensity of Slaughter of the Soul, that would be it
@@ms-06fzakuii53 I've heard the name before for sure, will listen and let you know what I think.
@@ms-06fzakuii53 GREAT ALBUM. Enjoyed it a lot and actually got pretty into em.
Slaughter of the Soul (AtG) and Whoracle (In Flames) were by far the most influential albums from the gothenburg scene for me, The Chainheart machine (Soilwork) was also a huge album for me. I think that the gothenburg scene was the best evolutionary step in metal music by far.
That's saying something for sure!! Thank you for watching 💪
As a swede and Stockholmian:
1. Entombed - Left Hand Path
2. Dismember - Indecent and Obcene
3. God Macabre - The Winterlong
4. Interment - Into the Crypts of Blasphemy
5. Edge of Sanity - Spectral Sorrow
Hounrobul mentions to Pan.Thy:Monium, Traumatic (Perfect Night to Masturbate) Carnage and Darkified.
The lack of mention of Edge of Sanity, or Dan Swanö at all, despite being arguably the biggest influence on the Swedish scene is crazy
Edge of Sanity was nowhere NEAR the biggest influence on the Swedish scene. They got some traction a few years later, especially Dan as a producer, but by then the scene was already well established.
okay bro, looking forward to your next video on swedish death metal
Dude, Dan is the Man!
Bathory on Spotify have an 'About' statement that says only the later albums were recorded alone, the earlier ones were recorded with the band
Great Video! But what about Edge Of Sanity?
Of course!
What's the name of the song at the end of the video? i really like it
What’s the song at the end?
Which is the name of the track playing at the beggining of the video??
I'm confused, is there a part 1 or 2? I can't seem to find them.
They're part of a Playlist! Check the channel Playlist tab 🤘
I found them. Enjoyable and informative. I've only been online for about two years, and I'm starting to take youtube for granted already, the amazing amount of cool music and history on here has revolutionized being a heavy metal fan.
Kind of Ironic whereas it's not as exciting as the heyday ( maybe it is and it's just subjective to the age of the fan?) But I'm real impressed with the oldschool legacy cats and the genuinely good material still being produced and released.
@@saltpeter7429 Right? It's so east to find so much awesome music and learn about the history of each genre. It doesn't seem as exciting as it did in the tape trading era, but still consistent and awesome 🤘🤘
Carnage- Dark Recollections

A question about it...don't you think that the band discharge..was a proto death metal band before venom that influenced the swedish scene? I mean discharge influenced crust punk , d-beat and hardcore in general but they also influenced thrash , grindcore and black..( extreme metal in general)don't you think also death metal?
Great idea!!! Discharge was definitely huge for the Swedish scene, but the Americans in general were less influenced by the European punk scene and more influenced by what was happening in their own sphere. I could be wrong, but I think that's what my research has led me to believe.
@@theheaviestshow ua-cam.com/video/oVTI_5P2040/v-deo.html let me know in the comment if this song is or not a proto death metal song (with d-beat and crust sound obviously)
@@Liviopedata hhmm I personally don't think so, but the influence on thrash is apparent
top5 swedish bands for me (Death metal)
1 Hypocrisy
2 Opeth
3 Edge of Sanity
4 Dissection (yyyes i know, technically melodic black metal, but storm of lights bane isn't much different than Morningrise from Opeth...)
5 Bloodbath
Very cool list, dude!!!
to me entombed and at the gates where the better bands
For sure, man!
How long does it take you to do you hair in the morning, you look like jimmy neutrons cousin
