Metal Evolution: Albums is the next level of Banger’s famous Metal History Family Tree, delving deep into the most influential metal albums ever made. In 1995, Swedish Death Metal band At the Gates released what many metal diehards recognized as a perfect record, SLAUGHTER OF THE SOUL. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this landmark recording, Sam Dunn travels to Gothenburg to interview the band.

At the Gates- Slaughter of the Soul
In Flames- The Jester Race
Dark Tranquility- The Gallery
Opeth- Orchid
Dissection- Storm of the Lights Bane
Death- Symbolic
Many, many more..
Some of the best records came out around the 1995 era without a doubt it was the melodic movement in Sweden
Edge of Sanity - Crimson or Purgatory Afterglow, highly underrated band and albums. Dan Swano alone has huge influence on swedish death metal scene.
carcass - heartwork and most importantly, sentenced - north from here which i consider to be the first melodic death metal (or at least proto melodeath) album to ever exist
death?
i just wanted to add Edge of Sanity- The Spectral Sorrows. but it was released in '93. Spectral Sorrows and Slaughter of the Soul are my favourite swedish Melo-Death albums.
Gates of Ishtar and Eucharist are also super underrated!
Man, me personallly, I would love for you to do an albums episode on Carcass's Heartwork. Sam, please consider the idea...
i agree
Heartwork was very influential in regards of it's melodic approach, just like SotS by AtG :))
DUDE! YES!
At the Gates changed my life. Simple.
I paused like 40 seconds into this, and started to spin the record. Will watch when finished.
Make this kind of docu for "Heartwork" by Carcass - also a very influential album that changed a lot of things in the death metal scene.
Great job!
For sure Heartwork is on the list if we can make this into a series. So influential!
Great, thank you!
Yes I agree....
I would love to see this as well, but if you haven't watched The Pathologist's Report, it's a pretty top notch Carcass experience.
Fucking facts!!!!! And documentary on Bill steer I mean the dude played in napalm death, carcass ,and angel witch .......
I love you people. Sharing this freely on here. It's a great gift to the metal community. Everything you all do.
Sam, you're among the metal gods for me. Your work for this music may be different than what Chuck Schuldiner or Rob Halford did, but it's insanely important. Keep going, you're making amazing stuff, and you're being an example for everyone.
Add yourself to the Rock Icons series and let someone interview you.
This was fun to watch. I was there at Wacken when they reunited. I will never forget the feeling of all the hair on my body standing straight up when what felt like the entire festival of 70 000 people were in on that first "GO!" as they opened with Slaughter of the Soul. Iron Maiden played the same festival, but they were absolutely blown out of the water by At the Gates. I remember how Tompa could barely speak because he was overwhelmed by emotion as he stuttered out a weak "thanks for remembering guys". Really great to see all that hard work the band put into making the album come back and reward them even though it was much much later.
This album is the best album in the 90's. I never knew that melody can be in extreme metal. This albums never gets old.
I used to tell people all the time that it’s one of the catchiest albums of all time.
It really doesn’t get old. And it’s one of those albums that doesn’t have a weak song or part. It was meant to be.
Its incredible how many bands sound like them over last 20 years. Thats a testament to how influental that album was/is
24 years old today, and still blows pretty much everything in it's genre away. I salute At the Gates for making this masterpiece and to BangerTV for making this awesome documentary.
the first time I ever heard Death was in your Extreme Metal episode when I first saw it almost 2 years ago. Thank you for introducing me to my favorite band!
This series needs to come back.
Remember I found this record in my brothers car completely randomly. Put it on and I was mind blown how heavy and catchy and just generally badass it was. Funny thing is same thing happened again a few months later in the same car with Blackwater Park
I love how you said this isn't your dad's or grandfather's metal cause my dad is the one who got me into death and black metal.
do Storm of the Lights Bane please!!
Yes! That is the greatest!
Yeah but how do you do it without interviewing Jon
@@vaevictis_ they interview the other band members, at least Peter Palmdahl and Ole Öhman
Thatd be too “controversial” for this poser, Sam Dunn
Ooooh dude FANTASTIC ALBUM!!!! Good choice
13:00 "How could a band that extreme be nominated?" And then there's Meshuggah on the list :D
Sweedish Melodic Death Metal is super special! Love the oxymoronic balance of all the elements!!
None So Vile should get the same treatment.
I think I have seen this documentary 30 times now..... it still blows me away, the band, the music and how Sam Dunn captured their essence in a short film....\m/
This documentary was released 1 year ago today, that day i bought Slaughter of the Soul on iTunes and made myself wait 1 whole year to listen to the album and watch this documentary, this is the best Christmas present any metalhead could ask for. Why did i wait a whole year? I really don't have an answer, but I'm glad i waited. Excellent job Banger Films.
Hell yeah!!! Thanks for putting up the full episode on UA-cam!
hey guys, the format for this is awesome. really look forward to more of it's like
Was waiting for this! Thanks BANGER!
At The Gates are the fathers of melodic death metal. Even though there were already other bands flirting with the idea, it was At The Gates the ones who put it all together in this album, “Slaughter of the Soul”.
This video just made my day. Slaughter of the Soul is like heavy metal's White Album. I'm glad you took the time to showcase it!
Fantastic! I love seeing these albums with this production value. You don't see this sort of stuff on VH1. Thanks Sam!
Thanks for making this documentary, ATG is my favourite metal band of all times, and I couldn't believe when they reunited also when I finally could see them in my home country Colombia south america it was a dream come true!
I was given a burned copy of this album in 2004 by a friend who said he didn’t really like it. I listened to it for about 4 months straight, and it’s been in steady rotation ever since.
Wow! Just found this channel too. Amazing job with this video. Love it, I grew up listening to Swedish medal, this was an album that really blew me away at the time. I remeber hearing the production of this for the first time and I just couldn't even believe how awesome it sounded. It still does to this day.
Awesome. Thank you, Sam and Banger TV. Hail the classic majesty of Slaughter Of The Soul. Long Live At The Gates.
I watched metal a headbangers journey, global metal, and the metal evolution series. I look forward to seeing many more episodes of this particular series as well. Big fan. You helped me turn metal from a fad for myself to a way of life.
Sam, it is a pleasure to view the products you have made. Up until today, I became aware that you had produced much more after the Headbanger's Journey. I watched the Extreme Metal documentary and I am glad I did. Then I came across this video on At the Gates, and all I can say is that I really enjoy the tone you set to it, the smart questions you ask which really make evident how an authentic interest you have in the music; others might do it to show off only. Congratulations!
What a great documentary! BangerTV I owe you soooo much
Wow... this was fantastic. Thank you!
I like the idea of this "new level" thing ;) It's going to be awesome! I 'm looking forward to see some episodes about albums that i may have missed somehow...and to hear the history behind them. Great idea Sam! Keep up the good work Banger team!
Banger TV is great! Great documentary Sam and team!
Man, what a great documentary! Truly awesome stuff. I'm only 28 now but i too listened the shit out of slaughter of the soul in the early/mid 2000's. I was lucky enough to be at one of their re-union shows at Wacken 2008, which is also featured in this video. I remember very well how blown away i was by windows being played live - i had a sore neck for like at least a week after that show - so good!
Saw At The Gates play last year here in Australia before covid hit. Wasn’t a massive crowd so it was pretty intimate and man, what an awesome show it was. They brought it the whole set and sounded great even though Jonas wasn’t able to be there so his bass parts were recorded, which just goes to show what solid musicians they are
Hey Sam!
Thanks a lot for putting this documentary up. Means a lot to me as i grew as a metalhead listening this and it still sounds fresh.
Hails from India!
The Red in the Sky Is Ours is imo their best.
What a great documentary, i really enjoyed this. Thanks Banger!
Thanks Sam!!!
I discovered this album as a teenager 10 years after it came out but none the less we played the crap out of it! Headbanging through the countryside for hours!
Listened to this album 50 times in a row and still can't get enough of it! Soooo awesome!
One of my fav metal records of all time. Thanks
7 minutes in and I'm in tears! This is beautiful!
Suggestions: albums like Blackwater Park (Opeth), Undertow (Tool), Demanufacture (Fear Factory), The End of Heartache (KE), As the Palaces Burn (Lamb of God), Arise or Beneath the Remains (Sepultura), etc...
Mate, great choices there. Backed.
I agree with all except kse I love em but that's not a classic album I'd take anything from the jesse era
Have to agree, Alive or Just Breathing is the KSE album that changed the face of metalcore, not The End of Heartache.
Earth, Earth 2.
Man this is a fantastic album. And it's timeless, fresh, like it was recorded yesterday. Not overproduced or too raw, simply PERFECT. \m/
Great, just really great. I've been listening to this band for 20 years and has been a huge influence. I hope this series continues.
At The Gates is one of my favorite bands of all time. Their records got me through some rough points in my life so they will always have a special place.
Absolutely great job guys. Fantastic record, fantastic documentary!
Awesome doc! Saw them at the Slaughter Of The Soul tour in 2008 at Sweden Rock, loved then ever since. The newest album is totally killer! Keep it up, Sam!
Until today I've never knew why this album gets so much credit but after watching this and listen to the album now I know why this album is so influential now I have a new band to explore and new music to head bang thank you banger tv 🤘🏻
More like this PLEASE. 🤟
This was a great watch.
thanks a lot for this, one my fave albums of all time.
Hell yeah! Been waiting for this!
Banger rules this was so awesome hope you continue with more
great channel gonna be binge watching in the next few days
Wow, just found this channel, you are awesome man, I loved your Metal Evolution series, you turned me on to what has become a major band in my life Nightwish (Eppisode 10 Power Metal), thank you so much for that, I will tell everyone about this channel, much love for your work, Cheers:) You Are The Best
Welcome!
+BANGER you opened my eyes to metal, expand my knowledge on my favorite genres, and help solidify my favorite genres with the metal evolution series, global metal, and headbangers journey.
Riot is another great power metal band. And they are going strong. Check out their last two albums.
I was 14 when Slaughter of the Soul was released. I was not really into death metal at the time, was mostly listening to stuff like Iron Maiden, Helloween, Meryful Fate, stuff like that. But this changed everything.
And in the metal scene here in Sweden, this record blew up in no time.
Aha! You were into melodic stuff but somehow got curious or the reviews of ATG sometimes got mixed up with melodic metal at that time. 😅
@@judetchua Actually not. I saw then play at the gymnasium of my school back in 93, so I was already pretty aware of them. I also grew up close to where Adrian is from, so we where always up to date, so to speek, about what happened on the swedish metal scene.
Are there plans for more or is this it? I paid for this one when it came out and would gladly pay for subsequent album documentaries.
Glad to hear that. Thanks for the support. There are plans but nothing to announce just yet.
i love ur work but plz make a documentary on type o negative
On band that really deserves a documentary but doesn't have one at the moment is Bathory
Please keep trying to do these, I hope you can find a way to monetize this. These documentaries are important!
@@BangerTV We are still waiting...
'Slaughter of the soul' had such a dramatic impact growing up - one of my all-time favourate albums ever. It's just perfect.
you have to do more of these typs of docs brotha!!! killer
As much as I like this album and it's influence on later bands, I personally think The red in the sky is ours is underrated. The riffs by Alf Svensson are so unique and there is enough melody in it to consider it Proto Melodic Death Metal.
Saw ATG yesterday i Malmo and they played this record back to back, insane experience
The first time I heard them was early this year January 2022, the red in the sky is ours. I was skeptical because the title sounded very "new age" and I'm into old school thrash and death metal. It fucking blew me away just how startling and heavy it was. The vocals, the tone, the riffs! I fell in love with the music. I recognized the Scandinavian roots by the end of the first song.
This has neede to be done for ages!!!! Awesome first choice as well, I've had this for 8 years now and it's one of my all time favourites! Is this the 1st of these episodes?
Hails to Banger Crew from Doncaster England!!!
Great band! Great documentary! Sam please do the gothenburg scene documentary also. Tq
One of my all time favorite albums and always will be.
One of the albums you hear within the first 5 seconds, you knew it's gonna be on your 'favorite albums of all time' list.
Such was the impact on me first time listening to this classic album.
Top 10 of my favorite album of all time... what a classic !
Bangers, you should keep on doing these documentaries! lml
Great doc on one of the greatest, most timeless metal albums ever created.
Thanx for this
BEAUTIFUL, ATG FOREVER! A GREAT DOCUMENTARY FANTASTUC JOB
I saw leprosy! I hope you make an episode on that masterpiece!!!
You have to do Symbolic - Death
Human is more appropriate
Nah Scream Bloody Gore I would say is more appropriate
We need another!!!
Never forget that Papyrus font ...
Excellent Video
I listened to this album and just loved it straight away!
I was meaning to pay for this. Thanks!
Finally had time to watch this, Sam Dunn, that was excellent . . .
When I 1st discovered this album, it was a bit after I had been totally blown away by this little band called Meshuggah and the debut of "Destroy Erase Improve", which is probably my fave Metal album of all time (both released in 1995). But I wouldn't get into SotS till a few months later when I found a promo copy and loved the Guitar tone (that "Entombed"/Left hand Path sound) and its progressive leanings. Thank you for telling the rest of the story.
Since this may be a topic to do other mini-Docs, I suggest a band (and its genre) that doesn't get the credit it deserves (though they are on your Family Tree), or deeper discussions of what they have done, and are still doing. Even though Queensryche gets most of the credit; *Fates Warning* were able to have 3 waves of influence in the burgeoning Progressive Metal (and Thrash Metal bands that were experimenting) genre with; Awaken the Guardian, No Exit and Perfect Symmetry. Each of these albums pushed outside of the Metal box and showed that Metal never had rules, but a want and musical ability to break them. Ask the Greek fans who put them high on the list of great bands, and those who follow Prog Metal to this day.
I hope that they will be on a shortlist of bands that deserve an in-depth look, hell, they deserve a Documentary as big as Rush or Maiden :).
Thanks again Sam \m/.
Right from the first time I heard this record, I knew it'll become my favorite metal album.
amazing record.. thanks for point it out
I remember seeing Sam's documentaries on metal on tv like 10 years ago, today I found this channel. Sam you are a god, this channel is incredible!
this album is soo huge to me. it means alot for real. when i first started listening to metal my dad gave me his copy and told me i would like it, and boy was he right.
Great video! Any news on the next albums in this series?
Can we get another one of these kinds of documentaries? These are great!
Maybe one of the most important albums of the past 30 years in my opinion! Absolute classic!
Amazing album! I like to listen to it while I'm lifting weights at the gym or when I go downhill on my bike....this album doesn't get old at all! Thanks ATG !
Absolutely Love Slaughter One of the best Death Metal Albums out there Thank You for Doing This
Love this Doco, one of my favourite albums of all time. had to have a bit of a laugh at 12:59 where Bella Stengerg said it was so shocking a band as extreme as at the gates could be nominated for a Swedish Grammy in 1995 but one of the other bands on the nominee bill was for Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve \M/
I saw them in Chicago when they reunited, the Circle Pit started before At the Gates even took the stage, seeing that Reunion show was one of the best shows I’ve been too
So love these brother. Awsome
Just found the album today and watched this. !!!
Awesome, are we to see more episodes like this in the near future?
Just saw these guys last night at the Fillmore in Silver Spring Maryland. Great great show. These guys are so fucking tight.... played Slaughter of the soul in its entirety.
I'm a sucker for music documentaries. This is no exception. Learning more about the band and getting into their music. That's for me. \m/ ^^
Can't wait to see where this series goes.
