Nice Ken! I’m putting together the 85 XC500 version with the uptight pipe and Powerdynamo Vape ignition all rebuilt should have it ready to fire this weekend. Great video!
I rode that bike in Wareham Mass, what a awesome handling machine!!!! The power he's not kidding 2 gears is all you need, it will pull your arms out of the socket. I had a 250 WXC the guy that owned the 500 needed a rest. That is a monster!!!
My dad had an 84. When I was about 13 I asked if I could ride it. He said if you can start it. I pushed it right off the patio down the driveway clicked up a few gears and bump started it. I thought I was bad ass when I came back in one piece.
i was told by a mx veteran that has raced from the 80 to this day, that all frames in the 80s were total junk and felt wobbly and unstable though... maybe husky was just particularly bad lol@@MrKdr500
Another amazing piece! When 2 strokes were built right! Where have you been Ken?!? Missed u! Interesting to see this today, as a we are doing a memorial for my good friend Mac, who passed away a month ago, today. He is mozdef in the cosmic ether.
My mate looped out my CR500 (Honda) today. He’s ok. Bent and broke the sub frame. Can’t find a new one online in Australia. Any suggestions Ken? There seem to be a few over there. Edit: turns out my friend fractured his back in three places.
What year? I would contact one of the aluminum frame Cr500 builders and see if they have one sitting in the pile. =They swap old frame for an new Cr250 or Cr450 one. A good welder should be able to repair your steel.
@@jonmccormick8683 it’s a 97 model. I just took it off and it’s actually a bit rusted so don’t think I’ll have it repaired. Do the 250 ones bolt straight on?
A Bute and a Brute! Had a 390 with the 430 head kit and it was one of my favorites Ever!! I grew up on Elsinore/CR bikes had that 40year old thing so went out in 05 and bought a crf450r..whoo surprised me. After riding two strokes whole life with a cr500 as my last bike...just completely different! I was impressed and after I got the new worn off it and experienced speed wobbles at top speed downhill with a stiff wind at my back and on pavement I sold it. If it was 1985 I'd have to own that!!! Way too brittle now and you can't ride those anything but balls out! They are happiest at full charge!!!
BIG DADDY is back in town.... incredible x 1000... I would be proud to have the cops chase me though town in an helpless attempt to identify this monster.
Husky ruled the desert races along with the later powervalve KX500. This bike will probably go 100mph+ Plus it is a bigger bike which helps stability. MX -I think the Honda had the edge with the cartridge forks. -This pipe is also interesting. Very large, but shaped like he old early 80's non-power valve 125 pipe = probably all top end on this. Pipe has the welded on heat shield also = must get very hot. This bike is pretty cool and the Husky CR (MX) line did sell as well as the Enduro/Cross Country lines. I have a huge soft spot for the Husky 430 back then. If you are that larger >6'2" rider this maybe your MX bike or just do it all bike.
I think Ken was probably much like me as a young man, built with an upper body suitable to have been a ball player,a boxer any kinda athlete, you name it and he chose MX. I just admire the hell outta that!
Dude had a tech business, worked hard to be able to put 5k worth of love into any ol' machine to keep it tip-top. I'll bet he and his whole family have bittersweet memories of past employees, the works.
My friend had one of these and let me ride it. It's a gorgeous bike. I always thought that model husky looked big. A real mans bike. He also said 2 gears were all you needed. Nice one here.
The huskys of that era sure were different! I owned a 125 enduro version.Super tall, ridiculous soft suspension, weird long wheel base and heavy. Objectively all the 125MXers i raced against were better yet i still got lots of class wins in Hare scrambles. It's because the bike made it easy. You could run near max pace for hours on end
I'm high as a kite listening to that exhaust idle. I had to snap myself out of a trance like state....lol Pretty cool stuff. I miss my Honda CR 500's (1989 and 1991). I should have never sold them. But then again, all my good riding spots are now heavily patrolled and enforced by cameras. The 90's really were great years. Cops rarely had to enforce shit. But then people started trashing the Jersey Pine Barron's and then that was the end of it. Cameras and GPS sealed the deal.
I has a '85 six speed husky 500. Fastest bike I ever rode.... period. Was hard to keep front down even in hard corners. Sold it when left thumb was cut off with tablesaw. Still miss that ride
My best friend owned 2 of them in the 80's. He raced them 3 times in the ISDE and loved the bike. In 89 he bought a 604 ATK which he won the 4stroke expert class in The Best of the Desert series in 89. Any Canadian riders out there from the 80's era would recognize his name. Jerry Nilsson. RIP
That is gorgeous and brings me back to high school. One of the magazines used a husky like this for the cover. Ripping through California poppies. Magazine got in trouble.
That bike goes up in the top 10 king of ping big bore category that you have had in the past few years It sounds almost as good as the super moto CR 500 y’all built a year or so ago
The bike is awesome! I love the left side kick start! Old war injury on the right leg from desert storm, makes starting a cold 500 2 stroke next to impossible lol!
Cool story about 80's motocross glory, Ken. A childhood freind's older brother had one, he'd let you ride, if you could start it, I'm a left leg dominant bmx/MTB rider at the time, so I got it fired up, at 14/15, the fastest bike I had ridden was a 79 YZ 250. Thing was a beast.

It’s funny crazy people are for these now. I worked at a HuskyKTM shop in 85 and we couldn’t give these away! Shake your teeth out. BTW, shock is Ohlins, but forks are Husky’s own and were not good. Brakes sucked too. Just my honest opinion for what it’s worth.
I owned the 430 AE 240 WR and WR 400 from that era. Only problem i see are those forks are SHITE. Put on a set of WP from that era and youve got a bike that will still smoke people easily.
I would put a half-smoked screen, some reinforced protectors for the hands and a roll bar from the front and below and around the engine... apart from headlights, tailights, turnsignal, mirrors and a plate😅🙏
Hey kap I got this runleader temperature gauge and it has a wire with copper washer that goes under the spark plug was wondering if it's OK to install it I got a 98 kx250 I'm going to put it on just wondering if raising the spark plug with the washer is going to mess my motor up what's your opinion on this 😮 and that is a nice husky bike love big bore 2 strokes 😀
If this bike had a FMF Fatty pipe on it,I’m gonna go out on a limb by saying she would be the king of ping. I know you would never find a fatty pipe for it and really there probably wasn’t one ever made for it. The compression that this bike has is where she gets the nice pop from
My unclhad the same bike even had the DG silencer like yours I remember throwing 30foot rooster tails every gear in the woods and they where six maybe seven inches deep

I had the 85 CR 250 , it looked exactly like the 500 and it was also very fast and had the excellent Ohlin's suspension
I LOVE your channel! Your passion for these classics, bikes is awesome! Both in preservation, and restoration!
What an absolute masterpiece!!!! I love it
Damn. Has to get around $10-15 grand at least.
Next to the 1983 RM500 this has to be the 2nd best most gorgeous motorcross bike ever built
I had a 83 Rm 500 and a XC 500 , Gorgeous bikes . One went to Australia others in Upstate NY.
Nuh...nothing it's more bad ass beautiful 500 then the BETA CR500❤
Yamaha wr 500 best looking bike
I agree that but rm370 and older rm400 was most beatiful bikes ever made

Amazing, way ahead of the competition at the time. Looks like a modern 1995 bike.
definitely not ahead, actually about 2 years behind & the frames were junk.
