      +James Bond yep, wise advice, music is the most important thing about playing a musical instrument, and if one instrumentalist holds all his instrument's technique but doesn't give it a musical meaning, then all these technique has no value.

    I've been playing guitar for 20 years, and I think Frusciante is the most innovative and brilliant guitarists I've ever heard. He is not a show off guitarist, he is an artist. Playing guitar is just one aspect of his ability. He is a very creative guitarist, a brilliant backing vocalist and one of the best writers around. Sit and listen to the song Dosed from the By The Way album. The layered guitar work is insane.

    to everyone making claims "hes the best" or "hes not that good", youre missing the point. This guy means every note he plays, he can play a 4 note solo for 2 minutes and it would have more relevance, tone, emotion and feel than entire albums done by others who are "better or "worse"

    • @mikenoface
      @mikenoface 4 роки тому +11

      @@mlnem2k .. @Judge Steve is incorrect. He didn't "fuck up". He improvised. Watch the picking hand. He strums a percussive note here (the technique he's actively demonstrating), stops his picking hand, hears that a HARMONIC rang out and not a fretted note, then adds pressure to his fretting hand and does a full step upward bend... which creates a ghost note bend. He then trills it with a little vibrato and then slides down the neck back into his riff. This all happens in the space of a quarter note. Funk is about the in-betweens.

  • @josevillarreal6294
    @josevillarreal6294 8 років тому +7

    John spoke about getting out of the way and letting the music happen. That it's already out there and we're the vessel that's capable of allowing this to pass through us by letting go and not trying to force this. He's totally right about how we get locked into a strict tempo without even noticing. I relate to his approach about really releasing your inhibition, it's a strong sense of freedom and opens the doors to creativity. Not everyone can relate to this, they are not enlightened, so to say , and can't understand attaining more by letting go or receiving strength thru humility. They say things like "HE'S WEIRD or He's on drugs" cause they can't understand. You have to evolve spiritually to attain this and that's what sets people like John apart from other players. Lots of people can play but only a few have their own mark . Where like you can tell their playing just by hearing it.

  • @booboo7064

      pifou61 so true but John has a different approach to the way he plays his music. So it's very much impressive when he does it but when someone else tries that they just won't sound impressive at all because they haven't put in the hours and effort much less done heroine or have gotten lost into their favorite musical genre to really grab the rails and go as fast as they wanted to go

    • @goodpeopleoftheworldunite
      @goodpeopleoftheworldunite 6 років тому +32

      pifou61 What do you mean "better"? He's pretty fucking brilliant all round if you ask me. Can't you hear the guitar SING.
      True, there are different styles, and a whole heck of a heap of superb players. But I wouldn't put a (good) musician down, just because of comparison. There are many greats,and John is one of them, for sure. Go and enjoy some of his jams. Or if you're not in the mood for that, Johnny Marr is another goodun that comes to mind atm.

    Man, no words for this. Really, thanks very much for the video. Truly an honor to get a lesson like this from John. He will forever be one of my greatest inspirations. I don`t know any guitarist who has so much of that Jimi Hendrix's soul as John... he`s not a linear guitar player, as himself was describing. There are plenty of great fast progressive guitarists, or fast metal guitarists, but he is just everywhere, nowhere, there are no limits, it`s as if he is floating, and just goes wherever it has to go... no rules, or barriers imposing things. Really, with the soul of Hendrix... Jimi was another guitarist who was one with the guitar and could go wherever he wanted

    Frusciante is among the guitarrist that inspired me the most ... he is very creative and you can hear he is always emproving his style with his own tricks.. every guitarist should do that regardless of fame... there are illimited numbers of combinations.. musician tend to forget that and follow the conventional way of playing ... you can come up with riffs just playing games .as he said . some time your fingers go somewhere randomly making an interesting sound .. and thats exactly the path to originality... Hendrix is the best example of the playing games thing ..

    EXACTLY THE SAME THING happens between Frusciante and Travis Barker ''haters''.....everyone's got the same old argument: ''everyone can play that...its easy''
    But true musicians know that on top of Fru's & Barker's habilities to play, they both are if not the most, one of the MOST CREATIVE musicians ever. I'm talking first place for each one on their own lists.

    • @Sansatilla
      @Sansatilla 10 років тому +8

      Yup, youtube's full of young kids covering technical music all day. To originally write it is a different story. Also, there's a probability the fru's and barkers can come up with "easy" riffs on the spot and just track in one take. How "easy" is that for a bedroom amateur.

    • @BOSIE321
      @BOSIE321 10 років тому +7

      The trouble is I don't think a lot of kids are aware of the impact of punk rock, and the ethos of punk rock on musicians such as Flea and John Frusciante. Both musicians site bands like The Germs as an influence, a band who were so incompetent with their instruments when they began but who made up for it with sheer energy and passion. Give me that kind of passion and sincerity over soulless technique any day. The two aren't mutually exclusive by any means but I think there is a danger when people become obsessed with trying to prove themselves on the level of skill. You only have to look at the stadium rock of the 70s or the hair metal of the 80s to see how disgusting that level of ostentation can get.

      Maxx Doran such an elitist hipster jerk off comment. The irony is frusciante is truly underground. He really knows his stuff. He was just unlucky in his time and space to be that guy who cracked the big time without meaning too. He threw it all away. This is a true God of modern music. Like Hendrix, cobain, Lennon etc. they crossed over and conquered the mainstream world, while being themselves and incredible individual, creative, talented and influential. I know my underground music. I'm not a chilli peppers fan. But I love frusciante. He's a special dude.
      I can imagine you in the mid eighties dissing some mainstream guy like joe strummer, van halen or someone and talking about how you know a real genius by the name of John frusciante who plays underground clubs in L.A . Your a tryhard.

    There are guitar players who play technically perfect all day like Paul Gilbert where I can go, "Hmm that was pretty awesome". Then there are guitarists who have little warts and bumps throughout their playing, but then out of nowhere they have these bursts of ferocity and musical perfection which are utterly transcendent and just make you smile or laugh or get up and move. That's the kind of player John Frusciante is.

    I love all guitar players I just think more people need to realize that every style is just as important as the next one. Playing tastefully is subjective at the end of the day. Play and listen to what you like, no need to shit on someone else for playing different than what you like, in fact you should celebrate it. There's nothing wrong with playing really fast if it serves the song well just like there is nothing wrong with playing slow, it is all about what you are stimulated by. What moves you is what you should focus on and try not to worry about what others will think about what you play or what you listen to.

      ***** Malmsteen has no diversity, dynamics or soul in his soloing - all he does is mindlessly shred harmonic minor scales and sweep arpeggio up and down the neck. He plays basically the same solo in every song.

    • @hinjurock
      @hinjurock 8 років тому +1

      ***** I've been a drummer for 30 years, a lead guitarist for over 25, and bassist for 20 and a singer/frontman/bandleader for 15. I know music theory inside and out. And I also know that I'd much rather listen to less technical guitarists like Angus Young and Slash who actually know how to write great riffs, songs and memorable melodic solos that are dripping with emotion - all things that Yngwie is absolutely clueless about.

    • @hinjurock
      @hinjurock 8 років тому +1

      And Steve Vai isn't much better. Joe Satriani is one of the rare few technical shredders who actually knows how to play for the song as opposed to just egomaniacally wanking all over the fretboard with no regard for the chord progression or overall feel and groove of the composition. And he can also write songs in a band context as well - just listen to the Chickenfoot albums. They're not amazing, but they're leagues better than anything Yngwie has ever done as far as composing good hard rock songs.

    • @hinjurock
      @hinjurock 8 років тому

      ***** I've never heard Slash's opinion of Yngwie, but I have heard a lot of pro guitarists say that they can't stand players who just mindlessly shred without any soul or groove. Not every guitarist is a fan of Malmsteen, Vai, and other players of that type, you know.
