  • Paramore have released their new song "The News". I reviewed their previous single "This Is Why" and was quite impressed so I'm intrigued to see what they have install for us next. It was also lovely to see that Hayley Williams had seen the previous video we'd done on this channel. Let me know in the comments what you think of this Paramore track and maybe even this kind of "pop rock" in general. Can you and will you rock out to it?

Happy that you mentioned Hayley’s abilities as a frontwoman. It’s all well and good that she’s an amazing singer, but her stage presence, dancing and interactions with the crowd are so engaging. Tons of charisma. I know its still relatively early to make this call, but I think she deserves a mention in the conversation of all-time great lead singers/performers.

I heard quite a bit of Rush in this song, especially Geddy Lee. The drumming is reminiscent of the late great Professor Neil Peart. Almost similar to Permanent Waves era Rush with a tad bit of Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows. Those albums were when Rush morphed into the new wave thing. Paramore must have listened to Rush before recording this track. All it's missing is the keyboards. Then we have a female-fronted Rush.

Well, it really became a pop culture thing, in the 70’s and 80’s, as the Baby Boomers, became captains of industry and the politicians, who they would’ve hated in their youth.
There was also such a massive spike in children born in the 50’s, thst it was an actual Baby Boom, hence Baby Boomers.
It’s as simple as putting a name on different eras of people born within a ten year or so time frame. The reason it became so prevalent on social media, and then in news media, is because it became an insult. Whether, the older generations calling the younger by their generation name, or the younger doing the same.
Except, I really don’t think many young folks actually know how old a “Boomer” actually is. As, so many use the term for anyone that they believe is older than 30.

Every musician's main instrument is their ears. Figuring out the chord progressions in a simple song like this is an essential skill, the more difficult stuff Justin showed was in understanding the relationships between the sounds as they evolve within the song (the timbre of the spoken word vocals interacting with the bass giving the sound a different 'colour' for the new section). That's what you need to understand to be a great songwriter. Well that and some other stuff, usually.

One thing that occurs to me listening to the new Paramore stuff is how much of a groove they're in. Like, in the late 90s there was a song by Fatboy Slim called Acid 8000 built around this sample of "If this don't make your booty move your booty must be dead". THAT is how I feel about the new Paramore stuff, it makes you want to move. And that's one of the core elements I feel has been missing from so much modern rock. They've absolutely NAILED that.
And with their electric live performances, which btw I've seen several so far and I'm blown away by how tight the current line up is.
I genuinely hope they appreciate what they've got here and keep it going, because this is a breath of fresh air. And thanks very much Mr Hawkins, not just for your own great music but sharing this and others I likely would've missed. People who share good art with you are to be treasured.

Super cool Paramore brought up your show. I didn't know who they were until you talked about "This is why". Was too busy listening to The Darkness when they first came out. love that song, and love the new one the news now. Thanks Justin

Sometimes when I'm sat down with my guitar, on my own with no one around, I'll play and sing "juuuuuuustin hawkins riiides aaaaagain.... aaaagain" (various widly diddlies)
That is one surprisingly catchy intro riff and a satisfying falsetto, I think this is why you have huge artists like Paramore talking about the professionalism and quality of this channel, truly a marvel

Upon watching The Umbrella Academy I can't help but think that the character of Klaus Hargreaves is a pale imitation of you.
Love your work, and even more so now that you're doing this wonderful podcast.
Thank you for being a sun in this dark and dreary world.

TLDR: Yes, yes... YES! It is very exciting Justin 😁 Paramore is my all time favourite band.
    STORY TIME:
For me they were the first band I truly fell in love with, and that I didn't know by proxy. I was in secondary school, the Internet was still fairly new and exciting with Haul vids and ASMR just starting to become a thing on UA-cam (before it was even called ASMR).
One day I spotted this vid suggestion of this girl un-boxing some cosmetic product called something like Jurgens and doing it all whispered. My curiosity was peaked and here I was about to kill two birds with one stone; to finally find out what these two new trends were all about.
However I wasn't able to focus on the subject of the video for long. As fate would have it playing in the background was the song Fences from the Riot album. Though, this was brand new music to me and it was muffled in the background - the video only long enough for a section of the song.
I watched that video dozens of times and spent weeks googling potential lines. Until eventually I found the song. I soon started listening to more paramore, discovering their first album as well. But most of all I was super hyped to tell my best friend at school about this band. She had introduced me to Panic! - so they were "her" band - but now this was "mine" to introduce her to (of course we both share a love for both bands).
What felt really special though was when, around a month or so later, I started hearing lots of people at school talking about this new band. As it happened I had discovered them just before they really became big in the UK.
A few years later (I think in 2010) I was lucky enough to see them in concert at Wembley Stadium. Lucky being the oporative word; it snowed and we barely made it on the train, missing the support act entirely. I've since been lucky enough to see Buble and Adele at the O², getting extremely lucky with the Adele seats - near the front and nigh on level with the stage. But even those two titans, in that arena, pale in comparison to hearing Paramore play from the arse-end corner of Wembley, way up in the gods 🥹🥰

He's NOT the only one. Geddy Lee likes the progressive and heavy (NOT poppy) side of Paramore. John Kay of Steppenwolf mentioned that his grandchild listens to Paramore. And Kay himself sort of endorsed them.

Loved their first 4 records, and was really impressed by their writing and performances as such young ages.
I kinda gave up on them after Josh left, because I loved the songs & guitar parts he would write. When I read recently that Ken Edwards (from Failure) mixed their self-titled "comeback" record, I decided to catch up on their work since the split. It's different, but highly listenable and extremely catchy. Her vocals have always been awesome, so it's cool to see them still out on the ice...

Yes Justin, here in Mississippi myself and Hayley are definitely fans. Funny story...my friend's band was playing a gig in Collinsville (where Hayley is actually from) and Hayley ran up on stage, grabbed the guitar and belted out an impromptu song with them. She is more than a vocalist.

Love your reviews, Justin. Can you do a video on why there's no songs with key modulation anymore? Someone (cant remember who) went through all hits from the 60s, and it was so interesting to see that no songs uses key changes in their songs anymore, it's literarily gone from all music.

Justin, I think you should check out waterparks. They're a fantastic pop punk turned more like electronic rock band? I put question marks cause it is hard to nail down their genre now now a days, but the frontman, awsten wants it that way. He also has synesthesia and it plays heavily into their music.

Ooooh. I'm 58 and just got called part of a "younger audience." I'd never seen this band, until they appeared on Kimmel. I'd heard references to them, from time to time, but I got the impression they were a group of middle-aged instrumental virtuosos who wrote long, sophisticated but uninteresting songs. Instead, here's an enchanting young woman heading up a 3-piece group that serves up a very catchy song in less than 4 minutes. Instant fan.
