  • In this eye-opening video, we dive deep into the past and explore a modernized retelling of the original text penned by the famous Arab traveler and writer, Ahmad Ibn Fadlan.
Ibn Fadlan was renowned for his detailed and vivid descriptions of the cultures he encountered on his travels. This account, in particular, brings to life a Viking funeral ritual as seen through his eyes in the 10th century. The Rus, the subjects of this narrative, were a group of early Russians with a strong Scandinavian influence. Despite being remote in time and space, Ibn Fadlan's compelling account helps us to piece together a visual image of these fascinating people and their customs.
However, it's worth noting that Ibn Fadlan's portrayal of the Viking Rus' sometimes conflicts with what we know about the Vikings from other historical and archaeological sources. This discrepancy only adds another layer of intrigue to the narrative and prompts us to further question and explore our understanding of these people.
The story told in this video is a modernized version of Ibn Fadlan's original text. We've updated the language to make it more accessible, while retaining the essence of the original account, providing an immersive historical experience that feels close to home.
Whether you're a history buff, a lover of cultural stories, or simply curious, this video promises a journey back in time that will captivate your imagination. Join us in exploring a unique glimpse of Viking Rus' culture as told by an Arab observer over a thousand years ago.

I majored in history in college and I absolutely love what you do. Human nature isn't always pretty; some cultures may have bad customs, and some individuals may be condecending judges of others. Regardless, your use of modern English adds new life to these otherwise cryptic texts. Thank you!

@@Say_When You're right. The challenge is, if we make it _too_ graphic, it will severely limit our opportunities on YT. It's somewhat of a balancing act.

I know this account. Many things he described were confirmed on other places, where Norse had the habit of bury instead of burning. The sacrifices, the place they would build on the ship where the chief would stay. But much of it was being watched with an Arab's eyes, he would be very, very confused and impressed. Some exaggeration would be expected.

The basics definitely align with what we know about the Rus' cousins in Scandinavia, but I think it's fair to assume he exaggerated quite a bit.

The movie constantly surprises you with these wonderful misdirections.., You expect these Brutish dimwitted neandertholic '80s action stars... And you get these incredibly observant.. wise perceptive warriors who would neve trade the easy path void of challenge for the right way.. The road that will test them... A path that is conquered.. will prove to themselves and for their society of their worth and ability... That path leads to honor and societal respect and admirati inon. That they viewed as the only true path for a Man

Drink, pray, Fight, trade, row, live, fyck --> ONE TOGETHER = One Man : more trust, less coups. Look how much they'd pay for jewelry for his wife. Also rings showing how much wealth they had. Transparency unafraid. If you fight me, know what you're fighting. If you take the wife in a raid and she's wearing some of your wealth - you've got a motivated force to retaliate.

The final description of the rus king w 400 warriors and bla bla bla and horse to his throne etc etc was a description of thor i think. That was their god, i dunno the name, but that was the description of valhalla. Bc obviously that was a translation of an interpretation

I learned this from 13th warrior .. I would have been a sophomore in high school... I had never been exposed to that part of history...
I think of those cultural differences.. You look at that gap between the narrator and the Northland performing the ceremony.... How do You even begin to bridge that? Biggest lie today is that we'd all be better people if it wasn't for this or that or the other thing...
Give me a break.. It is a miracle we aren't extinct as a species... Imagine bridging that gap.... Northman to Arab... Then scaling it up by an order of magnitude in complexity, intensity and numbers of distinct ethnic religious racial cultural groups.... I swear.. US should have had 10 Rwandan genocides by this point in it's history...
We have to stop bitching and moaning about how existence isn't perfect... It start accepting the fact that the opposite of perfect is the norm... the Opposite of perfect is the line that cuts through the heart of man

Oh, the 13th Warrior! I'm not a big movie guy, but this one was my intro to Ibn Fadlan's journey as well. I once tried the "13th Warrior" method of learning Czech, just by listening but failed miserably 😄
And you're right, with all the diversity, it's a miracle the US hasn't had much more serious clashes. Not sure why that is, but having a solid constitution probably didn't hurt.
