Pop Up Drain / How A Pop Up Assembly Works
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2013
- In this Pop-UpDrain video, I'll show you how a Pop-Up Assembly works. A simple invention designed to keep the water inside of your lavatory to shave or perhaps wash your face. Most of the ones I have installed are similar in design with the exception being that the material is either plastic or solid brass.

Not being a handyman, half way through this video I realized how to properly assemble a different model of a ball rod that was licking and was the cause of huge frustration. This is like writing software and sharing your source code so that others can understand it. Bob, thank you so much for sharing your experience in such a simple and didactic manner!
My pleasure Diego, thanks so much for finding and checking my video out. Regards, Bob.
Asked some guys and was left wondering how to install .....this video of yours was simple and clear...much thanks
Many thanks Bob, For a very helpful video 😊 from a sunny Bordeaux, regards Mike.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for checking it out. Bob.
Just want to say Thank YOU I assembled it fine but the rubber washer placement you showed made all the difference.
Many THANKS Bob you made it simple.
Thanks for the anatomy lesson. Helped me understand the mechanics before crawling under the sink to install the new sink stopper.
You're welcome Amanda! Regards, Bob.
Awesome...Thank you for homeowners like myself. Plumber are great but expensive with your video, you have made my life a little easier. Truly thank you for sharing knowledge!!
You're very welcome, That's what BPV is all about! Thanks very much for checking out my channel. Regards, Bob.
Great, helpful video. This was precisely what we needed. Thanks so much, Bob.
Glad to be of service Dave! HAPPY PLUMBING!
Yea Bob, I searched and searched to find out how to disconnect the pop up stopper on a bathroom sink. I used to have the type that you go under neath and take off the little U-shaped wire with holes in it. This house has a different kind of connect and it did not look as though it would be easy to disconnect, hence my search. You described the exact information that I needed and I am so grateful. I'm a household do-it-yourselfer. Thanks so much. Meris
+Meris Robison glad to be of assistance Meris, and thanks very much for watching! Regards, Bob.
Hi Bob, thanks for the video. I took my stopper out and snaked out the drain (I went in 25 feet, my main stack is 10 feet away) I replaced my pop up drain (this video showed me how to do it right) but my drain is still slow. My bathtub shares the same pipe to the stack and it drains fine. The sink & the tub share the same air stack pipe as well. I'm at a loss as to why my sink is still slow. Any ideas?
Tom Rumsey - From your description it's sounds to me like your snake might have gone up the vent pipe instead of down the drain? You might retry it a few times, and if you have no success you'll be faced with dismantling the trap and physically directing the snake down the tee inside the wall. Hope that helps! Regards, Bob
Thank you for this video Bob! I cleaned my trap and I was struggling with a leak after reassembling. I wanted to know the whole assembly to determine what was going on and your video was spot on.
You're welcome, glad I could help! Regards, Bob.
This was so helpful. Thanks for showing it to us
Hi Bob, I'm especially grateful that you included the information at the end. I have to get the stopper out so I can use a snake to clean out my drain, and you showed me how. Many thanks.
+Greg Wadlinger Excellent, thanks for checking out my videos! Regards, Bob.
Thank you Bob! Your video was a lot of help!
+Julian Frias Glad to help, thanks for watching!
Great video and very well explained. Just what I was looking for. Thank you!
You're welcome Gerardo, thanks for stopping by! Regards, Bob.
A useful video. The popup waste I bought had no assembly instructions. I kind of worked it out, but couldn't get it to operate correctly, but your video showed me I was on the right lines. Then I discovered that the eye on the bottom of the popup was adjustable for length. Once I had that at the correct length, it worked like a dream.
Thank you!
Thanks for this helpful guide. I was able to use this information to successfully sort out the sink issue.
Glad to help, thanks for checking out my video! Regards, Bob
Appreciate the tutorial. Going to tackle two bathroom faucets today and since kitchen sinks lack a pop up assembly I have never changed one before. They seem pretty simple.
+opinionatedman Not brain surgery bt any means, glad to help and thanks for watching! Regards, Bob.
Thank you, Bob! Very helpful!
You're welcome and thank you for watching! Regards, Bob.
Because of your video I successfully replaced the pipe that had the pop up plug. I could not believe how much sludge was in that pipe. I also cleaned out the overflow drain. House over twenty years old. Alberta, Canada
Leona Edwards Excellent Leona, glad I could hep. Thanks for checking out the video! Regards, Bob
My boyfriend thinks he can be a DIY-no-training-necessary plumber and completely ruined the existing pop up assembly. Your video allowed me to clean out the remaining piece in 10 seconds. He was ready to call in assistance. Thank you!
+Gary Tashima Glad to be of assistance Gary! Regards, Bob.
Excellent tutorial. Your detailed over-view of this pop-up drain assembly puts everything in perspective, and allows one to understand the whats and whys and hows. I already know the who and when... me... Wednesday. #:^) I am ready, pal! Thank you, Bob! Again, great video tutorial! Best Wishes, Wombat Willie
Thank you, my friend, that's very kind of you. I appreciate it! Regards, Bob
awesome video!!! thank you so much!!
Happy to help!
Thanks sir . Very well done and explained.
Thank you for checking out the video! Regards, Bob.
Good job Bob!
Thank You!
Thanks for all the detail. Washers fell out and couldn’t find anyone that showed how they were supposed to be put back in properly. Going to try again, hopefully won’t leak this time ;)
Thank you!
The putty on the bottom gasket is a great idea! I'm sealing a drip and was just about to lay in a lot of putty but the thought occurred to me that I would have sealed the overflow channel by doing that. Nobody talks about the overflow.
Gotta talk about the overflow 😏
Thanks ... Really a great help !!!!
You're welcome and thanks for watching! Regards, Bob.
Gracias
thank you for this, my tailpipe cracked where the ball joint goes, so i had no idea how it was supposed to work since mine was broken.
Thank you for checking out the video!
Thank you for a great training video - now I have to get to work in the bathroom.Regards Stan
Thanks Stan, thanks for watching! Regards, Bob.
Did you mention that if the pull knob above the sink won't stay in the up (drain closed) position, you can tighten the nut so it squeezes on the white ball. That will "stiffen" the whole assembly. If you loosen the nut it will make it easier to move the knob above the sink.
Gary Haaheim Good point Gary! I'm still learning this video stuff, I keep forgetting that the people who watch my videos have no idea how these things work regards, Bob.
Thanks!
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
I always had some issues with the freaking clip but I was putting it on the wrong side! but some times they fall
Bob can you advise which brand you are using in the video? It seems to be high quality but I can't find it online anywhere.
Great video Bob
My ball gaskets were missing from the kit I bought.
Thanks for watching Victor. HAPPY PLUMBING!
The knob popped off, tried foguring it out, watched this video and saw that extension thing had two holes that the knob rod goes in. I even adjusted the height and retighten everything just how I wanted. I am now just finding out that the person who did the remodel didnt have any time to adjust or tighten correctly, grrrr. I rent so have to mention it to the landlord. Thanks Bob!
+djrellco Cool, glad I could help. HAPPY PLUMBING!
Thanks for showing the mechanics of how each part works. 😁👍
Just watching even i turn off the volume it was easy to understand your video.
EXCELLENT!!
Liked and subbed.
My unit is now leaking from the pop-up ball, which I had to take apart as part of clearing a stopped-up overflow. I'm pretty sure that I have the two plastic washers with their concave parts against the ball. Tightening doesn't help...
Do I need to buy a new drain assembly and start all over?
You may have to, you can only tighten things so much!
Great video Bob, thank you. I have one question please, the stopper is not high enough and the drain is slow, how can I raise the stopper more so the sink can drain faster? the pop up is locked with the stopper and the opening is very small.
You would have to loosen the lift rod from under the sink, place the stopper in the fully up position then tighten down the lift rod. This should give you the maximum stopper height!
"Mind your business." LOL!!! That's right.
What brand is that pop up assembly? It looks high quality.
Wolverine Brass. Only sold to contractors.
As a woman it took me several times to figure this all out. The kit I bought was just the push rod but it contained two rods, each having two rings & attachment for the ball fitting to the existing drain pipe. (I'm trying to describe all this with what I see.) Anyways the first rod I tried, I couldn't get it to attach under the sink to the drain pipe. So finally I tried the second rod (it appears the ball & rings are smaller) & finally got it attached. Not sure if it will leak but so far so good. Thanks for your video. Hope it works right.
You're welcome! good luck.

As a woman?
Women, men, none is better than the other
That's raceist and offensive.
Thank you. I think I will replace it. How do I get rid of the smell it is black inside where the hole is.
Any household disinfectant will work.
Great video, how can I raise the stopper a little higher?
I will always place the stopper in the max up position, then you'll have to choose the right height hole in the flat vertical linkage. When you're satisfied with that height, then you can fine tune it by adjusting the pull-up rod before you set it with either a thumb nut or traditional nut depending on the manufacturer.
My sink flange is allowing water to go under it. If I put down the stopper and put a rag over the hole in the sink water comes out from under the flange. It stinks and I can hear it drain differently in contrast to my other sink. How do I fix this problem?
Remove it and use plumbers putty under the flange for a bullet proof seal.
what is the purpose of applying putty to the top flanze since water can get beneath from overflow
In my opinion it's just "good plumbing practice", some sinks actually do not come with an overflow. In theory the washer on the bottom portion of the pop-up that sits up against the bottom of the sink is suppose to contain any water that seeps through. Not always the case. The putty just eliminates one more place water can pass through.
Bob- can you just replace only the flange where the pop up sits ? Mine is brass and is discolored from being cleaned too aggressively. Seems like the flanges all screw in from the top-really don't need the rest of the assembly replaced. Thanks
+randy gefell Randy I've personally never done it for a couple of reasons. A. it's unlikely you'll find an identical match and B. If, by some chance you did you're going to disturb the other working components which will end up leaking on you. My opinion, replace the entire unit! Good Luck and thanks for watching. Regards, Bob.
Mines is leaking. It's leaking where the ball and nut meet. Any ideas why? Should I reassemble?
There should be two nylon washers on either side of the ball. One inside the tee and one inside the nut you screw onto the tee. Generally, a good snugging up of the nut will take care of it, otherwise, you make have to replace one or both of those washers.
Very professional. Using a pair of gloves shows that you are a clean person. I liked the way you work.
Thank you, my friend. Regards, Bob.
How to alleviate a slow drain:
Get rid of the pop-up, and plunk in a SinkShroom . . . Use a rubber stopper, if you need a sink full of water (stoppers that are hollow underneath seem to squish in better)
I do an initial cleaning with a lye solution, to clean the P-trap. Later, non-caustic, enzymatic cleaners can be used.
I use a bottle brush to clean black slime off the insides of the drain pipe
But, there is still the rod poking through for the pop-up, you still need that, to keep water in . . . which is a place where crud can accumulate . . . How do you get that out of the system?
Do they have a cap that you can put over the hole (ideally)?
Or, would you have to make something, like, get some sheet rubber, cut a circle, and then the OEM cap can be used over that, to secure it, to keep water in.
Or, get a black rubber cork, drill a hole in it, and secure it around the pipe with wire, to hold it on?
Keeping hair out of the drain does a lot. You want to put hair in the garbage can. They have these Shrooms for the tub, shower floor drains, and kitchen sinks, also.
...what about that extension tube you put to the side? ...when I installed mine it leaked from that tube to the casting...
You mean the rod that lifts the stopper? There should be a washer inside the tee as well as inside the nut that screws onto the male threads of the tee. You may have to snug it up a bit to stop it from leaking, make sure you're not missing any of those washers.
no, the extension pipe from the casting piece to the trap pipe...they do not tell you in the instructions but, I had unscrew it (as you did), put some plumber tape on it and thread it back into the main drain casting.
Depending on the size, generally 1 1/4" for lavatories I would use a rubber or beveled nylon gasket under the nut. Readily available at most home centers. Also, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/EZ2o5MmPMKI/v-deo.html
Bob what is the brand name of the product you are using in this video?Looks like it is of high qualityThanks
+Gene H That's made by a company called Wolverine Brass. Currently, only sell to professional plumbers:www.wolverinebrass.com/p/MF01000/pop-up-assembly-17-gage-all-brass--pop-up--ch#.Vm628korLBQ. Take a look at This Danco unit:amzn.to/1McLutb. Not a bad quality! Best, Bob
why there is stopper for sink? for what reason?
That's a great question but speaking for myself I use it to wash off my razor when I shave.
After all is hooke up correctly, the drain will not drain. Any suggestions? I have redone this several times. Thanks!
clogged drain?
@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thanks for your response. The drain has been snaked, we all have no idea why the sink is still not draining. I thought maybe an
airlock but that isn't it either. I'm beginning to think it is a flaw in the overall design.? Any other possible explanation based on your experience.
I'm open to anything....no pun intended Thanks so much!
"CHINA CRacks guys"
Everyone at 2020: ALWAYS HAVE BEEN
Puttie? Haha, love how you say that... we philly folks call it putty.
That's how we talk here in Brooklyn....Fuggedaboutit! LOL!
Can you replace a plastic pop up assembly with a metal one?
+Christine Lombardi Absolutely! You to replace the entire unit, and I do it all the time.
+BobsPlumbingVid
I had to tighten the nut so tightly, so there wouldn't be a leak from it, that it is a PIA to get the stopper up and down - I hate these things! Mine works via the forces of magnetism, believe it or not, and was the ONLY assembly at Home Depot.
Please tell, where did you purchase an AMERICAN made assembly?
Wolverinebrass.com. They only sell to professional contractors
Negative. Goto Fergusons.com, or visit one of their stores/showrooms.
Metal, and USA made are available.
I have a small leak from where the ball sits, really can’t figure out why 🤔
Generally you should see an internal and external nylon washer that holds the ball in place. If either is missing or worn, it will leak.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos nice to hear from you! both nylon washers are present and everything is tightened up. It’s brand new. It’s a slow leak but still annoying!
With this video you're saving yourself a service call of at least $ 150.00 plus pop up assembly which is about 20 bucks so roughly $170.00
You should have shown how to actually install that.
This should help...ua-cam.com/video/dDMIhlqHK8k/v-deo.html
Thats not a pop up drain 😂
Back in the day, thats what they were called. How old are you?
The putty on the bottom gasket is a great idea! I'm sealing a drip and was just about to lay in a lot of putty but the thought occurred to me that I would have sealed the overflow channel by doing that. Nobody talks about the overflow.
After I make up the bottom lock nut and trim off the excess putty, I'll take a look inside from the top and if I see any putty, I'll just remove it with a thin blade screwdriver. Those little leaks are troublesome and for me, putty solves the issue. Regards, Bob.
