On the topic of women changing their last name: My husband took my last name when we got married, by his own choice. I was fine changing mine to his, but he preferred mine. The issue in the U.S. is that not all states recognize this as a legit legal practice, so they could potentially be charged with fraud in those "we don't do that here" states. In order for men to take their wives last names, and have it recognized as their legal name in all 50 states, they have to go through the court system for it. On the flip side, it's expected of women, so they just have to do the paperwork for Social Security and driver's license, and then they're able to change it willy-nilly on anything else that bears their name. My husband thinks it's sexist towards both men and women, and frankly, he's not wrong.
What a good hubby. I took my husbands last name but it wasn’t too big of a deal to me because my last name wasn’t really entrenched in my identity- I was adopted by a stepfather so my last name changed once already in middle school. I think it’s getting to the point now that having separate names is more norm and not looked down upon. But we’re definitely not to a place that it’s normal for a man to change his last name. There’s something inherently wrong with that being an issue... so yeah sexism.

@@allicuddles there's nothing wrong with you, you're not the one attracting bad people, bad people are really good at working out who's too nice and who they can push around (not saying you're a pushover but you sound like a really lovely person and narcissists/abusers LOVE to tear kind people down. A lot of it is related to your childhood development. My dad was in jail and my mum was abusive so I didn't have positive adult role models in my life to help me find the 'right' kind of love. Sometimes its a lesson we have to learn on our own when we lack certain opportunities. But the whole 'you have to love yourself before you can love another' is VERY invalidating for a lot of people like you who have come out of bad relationships etc and ARE worthy of being in a loving relationship with others even if you haven't quite worked out how to love yourself. Kudos to you for sticking by your hubby through that diagnosis, I know big revelations in relationships like that can be tough. But you're married so it's clear that you are one very dedicated woman. Hope all is as well as can be x
You say this so perfectly. I used to beat myself up so much because I thought I didn't deserve someone good for me until I could really love myself and I just couldn't do that. Then I met my husband (about a month after getting out of a verbally abusive relationship) and I learned that it's okay not to have the most love for yourself. He loves me so much that I've been able to love myself more. And we both suffer from a few mental illnesses and having the support of each other and knowing we can each have days of "I'm not okay" is so helpful to ourselves.

That's wonderful and definitely something that happened to me too. The issue is just that it's very risky - should your partner suddenly leave you, it is possible that you could fall back even deeper into your problems. The ideal would be not to be too dependent on your partner for your well-being, which is why it's best to start a relationship in a good place or get there before you agree on anything truly serious such as having children.
