Thanks for this Jared. It's 2020 and I'm getting a D3s for my sports photography. I shoot football (soccer) mainly. My D800 belongs in a nice, dry studio, not on a muddy touchline!
@@shonkylovesgaming1766 Good question! The D3s suits my work. I shoot in low light and wet conditions. My pro lenses are Nikon. I don't need 45.7 megapixels, I need need more fps. I'm not in love with my D600 and am looking into changing that for a D4s or D500. I'd like to roadtest the D500 sometime.
I am way behind the times. I am considering the D3s in 2017. You can get one today between 1200 and 1500! I currently shoot with the D700 and need a second body. A lot of people are recommending the D750 to me and think I'm nuts for wanting the D3s instead. But I hate the layout of the D750. I don't want all the auto/scene modes I don't use. I also don't like the light, cheap body of the D750. I prefer the heavy tank cameras. If I could afford one, I'd get the D4 or d4s! Or maybe a d810, but right now, those are not in my budget and the d3s is.
I picked up a D3s a few weeks ago and man, do I love this thing. The build quality is fantastic and the images, even for 12 mp, are superb. I also have a d800e and a 1Dmkiii but I love the D3s equally if not more.
I agree with your reasoning, I am sure you can get total pro images from it if you know what you are doing, and I like the smaller size and weight of it, I was going through a similar battle myself between the D800 and 5D3, I might of bought the D600 if it came out a few months ago, but I went for a 5D mark lll, and it's real nice, but there are a few things I miss about using a Nikon like the pop up flash and focus assist beam, and the menu system that I was used to using, enjoy whatever you get
What lens are u using? F4 isn't extremely fast so... using a f/1.8 (prime) lens or a f/2.8 works great. I personally use a 35mm f/1.8 because it's good in low light situations and really affordable, fits well on my D3100. If you want a bit more range you could also take a 50mm f/1.8 which is around the same price ($200 / 170 euros). A 50mm f/1.4 costs a bit more but is really nice too.. f/2.8's are going to cost you... but I think they're worth it (personally I can't afford them).
I always ask myself 3 simple questions. 1.)does my current gear restrict me from taking the kind of photographs I need to take 2.)will the gear I'm considering buying improve my photography and/or make me more money and 3.)can that money be better spent in another more effective way to give me better images. Some people spend money to spend, fine. For me, the money I spend needs to make a difference. 9/10 I buy glass or lighting, NOT cameras. Cheers.
Now problem.. The 18-55 is a light lens so you should be able to handhold it, and hopefully the band isn't moving too much. I wouldn't say it's "good", but it gets the job done. It's good for a kit lens. But for such instances you'd want a prime lens. This means you lose the ability to zoom, but you'll let more light in with the wide aperture. You should just play around too and get the feeling for different settings that you find yourself happy with in the results
i haven't touched the D600 or the 6D, but after watching some photokina videos about both cameras, my first impressions are that I like the D600 allot more, and it is tempting for me to buy one, but I don't think I will, but I don't understand Canon not having a popup flash / focus assist beam / flip screen for video / and I don't understand why it doesn't atleast have the 7D autofocus system, but it does have wifi
The FX body will have better noise performance. What I suggest is to just wait it out until the D600 comes out. Watch some reveiws. Test out the camera then decide. The D7000 is amazing I have it. But the D600 sounds promising.
You'd have to get low light glass. Your problem is obvious- you used ISO Hi-2. You could also lower your shutter speed. 1/60 is still pretty decent if you don't shake so much. I'd say get a lens such as the 85 f/1.8 (Because of distance issues) or a 70-200 f/2.8. Fast glass is great for band performances because of the different lighting situations. And with flash, it's best to use bounce flash or similar (use a stofen diffuser to spread the light).
what do you aim for? still photography or video? and which category, weddings, studio, candid pictures, sports, etc? i think that's a good place to start for your question (i know fro usually replies back asking for parameters like that)
I have the same camera, maybe I can shed some light on this: ISO Hi-2 is equivalent to ISO 12,800, so you don't have much room for more light sensitivity anyways (even the D3s tops out at 12,800 before expanding I think). Your aperture of F4 is fairly standard, but clearly not wide enough for those band shots. Like anyone starting out with a camera such as the D3100, I would recommend you buy the 50mm f/1.8 lens (~$200). It will let in much more light and allow you to lower your ISO.
I’m still shooting a D2H in 2018. Might got to a D4 one of these days. I just do it as a hobby now. Used to be a stringer for our local paper till they went under.
Your colour problem is likely due to your white balance being off, not because of a lack of light. I suggest shoot in in raw then adjust the white balance on the computer when processing the raw files.
If you dont know if there is a huge diference between the two cameras then you need to do a lot more research on your own. its very clear the differences and for whom its suited for.
You probably saw some f/2.8 glass then, it's great but over $1000 or even over $1500 I think. Looking at the fact you use a D3100 a 35mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.8 is affordable and one of the best DX lenses available. Good luck and have fun shooting!
Would like to see D600 vs D3s/D4 in high ISO face off. Image quality from D600 looks very impressive... of course the build quality and features of D3s/D4 are more extensive
In terms of high ISO performance (and for me thats actually the main aspect to compare modern cameras, at low ISO just every camera is amazing these days), the D4 reached my old D3s in real life resting but its just NOT better, there is no stop, not even in scientific tests (look at DXOMark). I think thats disappointing for a "next generation" camera, I hoped for a step forward in picture quality and not just in video stuff. Thats nice for video folks ofc, but I take photos with my camera.
the D4 has more detail in low light, just because there's a sample image on youtube that was taken at 51,200 iso (which no one would ever use) doesn't mean the 1dx has better low light performance from 100-1200 iso than the d4. Obviously the 1DX has better autofocus in daylight but you're wrong to say the D4 has terrible autofocus, and fyi it has way way better autofocus in dim light like at a music show. Not to mention D4 has a full EV higher dynamic range and woopie doo 2 less megapixels.
i never understood why nikon refuses to put a flash on the d3s/d4. not to be used as a main flash but its good for the CLS system and even pros can be in situations where on camera flash is better than no flash
Question... do you think you might be a bit biased because you tend to convert most of you images to BW? so the supposed green tint that the D4 has may not bother you as much?
Just think about what YOU need from a camera. The price difference is about $900. From the what I can see, the D800's "advantages" are 1/8000 max shutter speed(vs 1/4000), 51 AF points(vs 39), 1/250 flash sync(vs 1/200), 0.5 more FPS, and 36mp(vs 24mp). Whether or not you see these as significant advantages(or disadvantages) is up to you.
how am I wrong about anything I said? It is a fact that the D4 has higher dynamic range, better iso performance, better low light autofocus, a larger buffer and faster file transfer, and its a bit smaller and much lighter. If those features aren't important to you then the 1DX is better but your paying an extra $1000 for 2 more megapixels, 2 more shots per second, and 10 more autofocus points. All you can is troll since you don't own either camera.
Hey Jared, since this comparison is a couple of years old, what are your thoughts on the D3s still being a great buy in a used capacity in just under the $3000 range? Tired of waiting for Nikon to come out with the D400 that we may never see, and this is in my budget. Thanks for any advice.
+victory065 On this time u can't get a better bang for the bucks than buy a Nikon D3s! I got myself a Nikon D4s, yes its good, but the 4000 dollar that I have to pay after selling my D3s was a big failure, the difference in picture quality absolutely not worth it! I sold my D4s and buy myself a almost new D3s, and got 4000 dollars in my pocket :)
So I'm thinking of buying a Fx body for low light only. No video. Maybe some high speed once my career picks up. Now that the D5 got announced...should a d4s be good? Or is the d3s (which has plummeted to under 2.5k) still a kick ass camera? Any IQ difference between d3s, d4 and d4s?

B&H usually seems to rate their items lower than they actually are. This thing was like new right out of the box. Cost was the big deciding factor for me... $2500 for a D3s at the time or $4000 and up for the D4, and even more for the D4s... and I have heard of people switching back to their D3s after moving on the D4/4s. Either way, ya can't go wrong. I shoot in extremely low light conditions, and shoot action in those conditions, and I'll tell ya, this thing is a beast!

Should I pick it up...or should I let it go P.s: I vl never have a budget of 4K dollars to buy a camera body rather I would buy a lens. Thanks
canon's 24-70 has less distortion at 24mm than the nikon, everything else is about the same. But I guess that doesn't matter since my youtube posts are narrow minded which of course means I can't take good photos.
No. The d7000 is an awesome camera for the normal consumer. If you don't REALLY need the better features of a more expensive model, you don't need an upgrade. If you want to go full professional, get a newer camera, not one that is on the verge of breaking (actuation limit is 300,000 i believe).
oohh give me a break...u will find since there launch of the last 3 cams and pro lenses as canon are about 5yrs behind, in the 80s canon where nowhere in cams or glassware, check DXO, check any where u will find thats true.
yes it was, because you are the one that is mostly wrong, and when you can't admit that another brand camera is maybe better than what you own, that makes you a fanboy, but it is ok to be a fan of Nikon because they make a great camera, but they aren't the only Brand in the world, anyway, for me this conversation was all in fun, but I still say your one comment was uncalled for, but it's ok, just enjoy your D4, it's a really nice camera, and don't be to jealous about your neighbors 1DX haha
…Because we don't give a fuck about these pointless 'wars' between brands? Both Canon and Nikon are great, and make great cameras and lenses. Deal with it.
if you are able to spend much more money for the fx objectives, the d600 might be a good choice, but if your budget is only around 1000$ you shouldn't save the extra money for a d600 i guess.
I would never use Nikon for video. Ever. The moire, the aliasing and the compression is just horrible. They need to step their game up in that respect. Canon is in a league of it's own in that regard. However for stills, yeah Nikon is a great choice.
what makes you narrow minded, is being sarcastic to someone you don't even know, just because he has a difference of opinion on a camera, you have no idea who I am, and yet you thought it was ok to talk down to me by saying that I probably won't own a pro body anytime soon, it was uncalled for, People like you are such fanboys that you need to insult people that think something is better than your D4, personally I love Nikon and Canon, I shot only Nikon for many years before I got a Canon, Peace
D600 vs D800? no. If you're going to shell out money for a $2k camera, save chip in a little bit and just get the D800. it's a better body. better autofocus. better flash sync capability. Higher resolution.
I own a D4 myself and my neighbour owns a 1dx so I've gotten a faire look at both cameras. Guess what contrary to this bullshit youtube video that was sponsored by canon the D4 overall is a better camera. Not that it matters to you since you don't own either and probably won't own a pro body any time soon.
is alyboy 11 years old, first of all, I am not a follower like you, so who cares what other people do, I do my own research and I buy a camera to fill my needs not someone elses or yours, if you want to shoot Nikon that is up to you and your needs, so save the idiot remarks for someone else who actually cares about what you think, and besides, if you really new what you were talking about you would know that most pro photographers think the 1DX tops out the D4 in almost every way
hey canon how come we cant match nikon , but we will rip off our sorry assed followers, inferior sensors, af issues on most cams, light leakage, poor results as DXO proved , nikon well ahead, stop crying about ur losing to a better system in all areas
keep dreaming Nikon Fanboy, the autofocus on the 1DX makes the D4 autofocus seem like its from the stone age, except in real extreme low light, it will track a moving subject way better than the D4, and the high ISO on the D4 looses more detail and sharpness than the 1DX, the D4 image has less MP and less detail, the 1DX will do more frames a second with out any buffer problems, and if you hold the 1DX in your hands, it feels like they built it custom just for your hand, take that Fanboy, haha

why everyones talking about D600, 5D3, 6D... when video is about D3s vs D4???
Hey jarred I am currently using a D810, I'm into portrait and wildlife photography. Actually one of my friends is selling his D3s for a though away price it has done around 30-35k shutter actuation. Should I pick it up...or should I let it go
P.s: I vl never have a budget of 4K dollars to buy a camera body rather I would buy a lens. Thanks
Did you buy it ??
I watch this because although Nikon is a step behind, I admire the D3 and D4
canon's 24-70 has less distortion at 24mm than the nikon, everything else is about the same. But I guess that doesn't matter since my youtube posts are narrow minded which of course means I can't take good photos.
If you want a proper review on video - more than "I love the 20min of continues video" - check out Philip Bloom.
I just LOVE this chair. It's like on the movie Men In Black 1
When the D4s comes out, I'll make the upgrade.
There isn't ENOUGH of an advance in technology to justify the jump.
and from what I hear, the D4 has green screen issues
5:36 Jared couldn't have said it better. this guy has owned and used both as tools for his trade.
Nice mini review, thanks...
yes it was, because you are the one that is mostly wrong, and when you can't admit that another brand camera is maybe better than what you own, that makes you a fanboy, but it is ok to be a fan of Nikon because they make a great camera, but they aren't the only Brand in the world, anyway, for me this conversation was all in fun, but I still say your one comment was uncalled for, but it's ok, just enjoy your D4, it's a really nice camera, and don't be to jealous about your neighbors 1DX haha
…Because we don't give a fuck about these pointless 'wars' between brands?
Both Canon and Nikon are great, and make great cameras and lenses. Deal with it.
You said the Canon is better in every way which it isn't then you call me a fan boy for pointing out you are mostly wrong. Was that called for?
Typo alert: Susbscribe.
Great video, Jared!
I want that chair !
should i up grade my d7000 to a d3s with 278,889 actuations for $1500
if you are able to spend much more money for the fx objectives, the d600 might be a good choice, but if your budget is only around 1000$ you shouldn't save the extra money for a d600 i guess.
I would never use Nikon for video. Ever. The moire, the aliasing and the compression is just horrible. They need to step their game up in that respect. Canon is in a league of it's own in that regard. However for stills, yeah Nikon is a great choice.
D600: Apple
D800: Orange
Stop comparing the two.
I need to finish watching
what makes you narrow minded, is being sarcastic to someone you don't even know, just because he has a difference of opinion on a camera, you have no idea who I am, and yet you thought it was ok to talk down to me by saying that I probably won't own a pro body anytime soon, it was uncalled for, People like you are such fanboys that you need to insult people that think something is better than your D4, personally I love Nikon and Canon, I shot only Nikon for many years before I got a Canon, Peace
nice fro
D600 vs D800? no. If you're going to shell out money for a $2k camera, save chip in a little bit and just get the D800. it's a better body. better autofocus. better flash sync capability. Higher resolution.
I own a D4 myself and my neighbour owns a 1dx so I've gotten a faire look at both cameras. Guess what contrary to this bullshit youtube video that was sponsored by canon the D4 overall is a better camera. Not that it matters to you since you don't own either and probably won't own a pro body any time soon.
Well, there is a huge difference.
Hah, pretty funny, when Canon has always been one step ahead of Nikon, hey Nikon, where's YOUR 4K camera?
Thank you
was looking for a diablo comparison video lol
is alyboy 11 years old, first of all, I am not a follower like you, so who cares what other people do, I do my own research and I buy a camera to fill my needs not someone elses or yours, if you want to shoot Nikon that is up to you and your needs, so save the idiot remarks for someone else who actually cares about what you think, and besides, if you really new what you were talking about you would know that most pro photographers think the 1DX tops out the D4 in almost every way
Dx vs FX. hmmm and old tech vs new tech.
Here is one but it is in german maybe you can understand it. /watch?v=FQNypXRgiTk
WELL DO THAT... and see ya.
hey canon how come we cant match nikon , but we will rip off our sorry assed followers, inferior sensors, af issues on most cams, light leakage, poor results as DXO proved , nikon well ahead, stop crying about ur losing to a better system in all areas
the D3 and D4 are OLD NEWS, and if I was going to own a camera for sports and journalism, I would get the Canon 1DX
Buy a d7000 and spend the other $1000 on glass......
Can I have your chair?
D600!!
there is a large amount of first world problems in this video lol
Egg.
like I just said, trololololol.
lol d700 is nasty
You know nothing!
frist
keep dreaming Nikon Fanboy, the autofocus on the 1DX makes the D4 autofocus seem like its from the stone age, except in real extreme low light, it will track a moving subject way better than the D4, and the high ISO on the D4 looses more detail and sharpness than the 1DX, the D4 image has less MP and less detail, the 1DX will do more frames a second with out any buffer problems, and if you hold the 1DX in your hands, it feels like they built it custom just for your hand, take that Fanboy, haha
