    1 - Start small!
    2 - Pick a small(ish) colorwork motif.
3 - Don’t be a hero. Use your stitch markers!
    4 - Don’t be afraid of color.
5 - Try out different techniques (how to hold your yarn, float catching techniques, etc)

The Thread - An international Discord server for fellow nerds and lovers of all things fiber!
Look, I personally know what it's like to not have a knitting family. Even when I hung out with other knitters, I still felt like an outsider. I cracked jokes no one understood or liked, I'd bring up subjects no one cared about, and I always felt a little too loud to be at the table.
That's why I started The Thread on Discord - for like minded, caring, supportive, and nerdy makers to get together and have a safe space where we can be exactly who we are without judgment. We have weekly virtual knit nights and events every month, ranging from Sit&Knits to D&D One Shot Campaigns and a virtual book club.
Joining The Thread will not be like those horrifying moments at the beginning of the school year when you realize none of your friends are in your lunch period. We're all friends, and we want you at our table. Join by following the link below to Ko-Fi.

The blizzard sweater by Jessica McDonald was my first color work project. It has a small motif around the yoke, no more than 3 stitches between floats.

💙👍💙👍💙👍 =big yes to both! But you already knew that.
Absolutely agree on starting with a project with a small chart. Not worrying about floats makes a huge difference, but I also find it easier to knit short chart repeats in general.

If you are doing colourwork in a small circumference (socks, sleeves, mitts) there is a tendency for it it get a bit tight. Some suggestions: knit inside out- so that the yarn that is being carried along must go around the outside of the circle. Longer distance=less chance of being too tight. Also going up a needle size for the colour work section decreases the likelihood of tight stitches.
Have fun, with just a bit of practice you will see how fun it can be- remember they are just knit stitches. (Way easier than texture or lace and a great finished look)

YOU CAN DO IT! Just remember to gently spread out your stitches on your right hand needle every so often to avoid puckering and to pay attention to how you're holding your colors so your contrast color is sitting on top when it's knit. If you don't know what I mean by that, check out this great resource from Brooklyn Tweed: brooklyntweed.com/pages/how-to-knit-color-dominance-101-video-tutorial#:~:text=Regardless%20of%20how%20a%20knitter,wrong%20side%20of%20the%20fabric.

My joy as a viewer continues!
I started colourwork recently-ish and took forever to work out how to hold the yarn - I'd love to know what you do. These days I am comfy with a colour in each hand, which as a continental/combination knitter has me wondering what it would be like to knit a whole project English style.
    Keep being awesome. ❤👍😀

@@niknikc27 I feel that frustration! It took so long to grasp it (a cowl, a jumper and some socks I don't wear because the colourwork looks awful) buuut then it kind of clicked. I asked a lot of people how they hold their yarn, watched an awful lot of tutorials and tried different ways. Cheering you on!

Start small... hmm, so jump into a full colorwork all over sweater with large and small motifs and making up my own motifs as my first real project back after not knitting for 7 years and only being a beginner even back then? Got it. Maybe I am a Leo Venus.

Love your Podcast (and TLotR and HP)! I find knitting socks with colourwork much harder than a sweater, I never get them to go over my feet properly! I would suggest fingerless mitts or wrist warmers. And for tight knitters- go up 1 or 2 needle sizes for the colourwork part! I also started my own knitting Podcast. I would feel honored if you checked it our. :-)

In an insanity moment I’ve recently signed up and been accepted for a colourwork sweater test knit. I HAVE NEVER DONE COLOURWORK BEFORE!! Aarrhhhhh what was I thinking. I have been thinking that I could have a go at something small before I embark on the sweater and this podcast has come at just the right time. Thank you 😊

    • @commonthreadfiber

YOU CAN DO THAT SWEATER, THOUGH! Plan out your floats if there are any (and by that I mean mark on your chart where you'll catch longer ones to ensure that they're not laddering...and by that I mean don't catch long floats in a row directly over a float you caught in the row below it), watch a tutorial or two on color dominance (assuming it's fair isle) and you can totally do it!
I'm happy to explain any of that further or share my favorite color work tutorials if you'd like!

Hi, I just love the Birkin that you made in ecopuno, and I wonder what adjustments you had to make since the pattern calls for fingering weight yarn and the ecopuno is sport weight. I really want that yarn because of the fiber content, but you would also waste a lot with the huge ball of each color! What are your suggestions! Thank you.

    • @commonthreadfiber
      @commonthreadfiber  Рік тому +1

Thank you so much! Here's my Ravelry page for this project: www.ravelry.com/projects/nikkired246/birkin I left pretty detailed notes there. I definitely had leftovers in the green color that I used. But unlike the original pattern, I only used 1 contrast color for the flowers and 1 contrast color for the leaves. So I didn't have a bunch left over, and I also don't mind having leftover yarn. But your mileage may vary!
