Other Info:
The Thread - an international server for fiber nerds! Look, I personally know what it's like to not have a knitting family. Even when I hung out with other knitters, I still felt like an outsider. I cracked jokes no one understood or liked, I'd bring up subjects no one cared about, and I always felt a *little too loud* to be at the table. That's why I started The Thread on Discord - for like minded, caring, supportive, and nerdy makers to get together and have a safe space where we can be exactly who we are without judgment. We have weekly virtual knit nights and events every month, ranging from Sit&Knits to D&D One Shot Campaigns and a virtual book club. Joining The Thread will not be like those horrifying moments at the beginning of the school year when you realize none of your friends are in your lunch period. We're all friends, and we want you at our table.

Hmm, knitting heroes. Off the top of my head: Norah is way up there for me too. I love Alice Starmore's composition, cables or colorwork; dislike the non-inclusive size ranges but I admire the artistry. Romi Hill is my lace hero. Patty Lyons is the tips and tricks Queen. Alasdair Post-Quinn has done so many cool things with double-knitting (aka the only colorwork I don't frig up 😂), and that's inspired me to try some different things. I credit Kaffe Fassett with inspiring me to not fear adding (more) color... Um, yeah. I should stop now 😂 Oh! But my ultimate crafting hero was a friend of my mum's (she was also my babysitter's mom) who did *everything*. Mrs Fee did cross stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, crewel work, knitted, crocheted, sewed, painted watercolors and oils; I'm sure there were other skills I've forgotten. She taught Mum and I cross stitch and needlepoint when I was 6. She was thrilled when she found out I'd taught myself to knit (we'd moved away in the intervening years and then moved closer again), and wanted to know what I was working on, and planning next. She inspired and encouraged me so much. She's since passed on but I still remember sitting on the floor next to her chair, going through her big floss case to find the next color I thought she should use for whatever she was stitching that day 😅

My knitting hero is my brother. He told me to pick up knitting again during my depression. Meds and knitting got me out of the pit. Now a very small dose of meds amd a lot of knitting just for fun keep me grounded.

Congratulations Nicole! I’ve been watching you since your first episode and you’ve done it! Bona fide knitwear designer! My knitwear hero…. I can’t pick there’s too many. I do love me some Alice Starmore and Marie Walin. Their Colorwork is to die for - problem is it’s not my style. I can still admire it from afar. Anyway, just want to say I’m really interested in trying your That 70’s hobbit design as a double knit piece. Alas, I have so many projects I want to knit and so little time…..

I'm making a Stella blanket with yarn inspired by Anne of Green Gables. I think that may be my fandom! As to knitting heroes, I had one early on, but a weird experience soured my admiration a bit. Now I just aim for making fiber art friends and connections. I've never been good at having heroes. But friends? Those are golden. And my third sweater was knitted flat and seamed as a test knit. I didn't realize this was considered challenging until partway through. It was with an all over texture, so the purl side wasn't really any different than the knit side anyway.

You are NOT alone in your admiration for Queen Nora. I have bought every single book of hers over the years and am in awe of her talent. Your Nora sweater is beautiful...well done! Knitting flat was the only way things were done (at least in North American at the time) when I learned to knit 65 years ago, so I am always puzzled when newer, younger knitters shy away from purling and/or knitting flat. As you say, how many patterns have been passed up due to FOF (Fear Of Flat). 🙂 Your videos are delightful!

I'm not sure that I have a vibe, although I have been accused of being a mermaid in a glitter ball recently 😂 I love color, and favor bright cool tones. I'm all about aquas, teals, emerald, sapphire, deep purples. If there are pinks, they are darker brighter tones. I think I may have absorbed a little too much Lisa Frank stickers, folders, etc as a child. And now that I'm thinking about the actual colors I wear, buy, and knit with, mermaid in a glitter ball isn't that much of a stretch. I think I need to add more shiny things for the glitter 🤔 My problem is I add so much color everywhere it can be hard to put together an outfit that doesn't look haphazard. I'm also closing in on a major birthday in less than 4 years, and starting to not really care if I look haphazard to other people. When the cold weather returns and my black winter jacket is in use, my multicolored and in no way matching accessories bring all color I need. Oh, and I think you're right: chartreuse is totally a neutral

I'm very much a squirrel knitter, so if a project is holding my attention I don't care too much about the weather. That said, it is too damn hot to have my worsted weight cardigan in my lap while I knit the pocket lining and topper that would finish it off. Well, other than sewing on the buttons, and the short cuff seams (I refuse to knit garter st in the round! Flat or not at all lol), and weave in the ends that could show 😂 No judgement on your ends, my friend; I almost never manage to weave mine in. I figure as long as they're not visible while the piece is being worn, I'm good. I also decided that it would be a glorious idea to knit random stripes (I used a D10 and a D8 to roll for them) in 9 colors. Soooo many frigging ends 😂😂 But I love my mismatched stripes and bright colors so I'll deal with them. Since it's hot and my back has decided today is an enforced rest day (aka if I breathe the wrong way it will spasm bad enough to make me cry), I'm lounging on my bed, watching UA-cam videos on my phone and working on a double-knit Supernatural-inspired scarf for Sis' 40th birthday next year. I'm in the midst of the Mark of Cain right now. Fitting since we just finished season 11 of our 9th(? probably more) rewatch of the entire series. Sis doesn't know about the scarf, which is why I'm giving myself over a year to have it done. Stealth knitting and UA-cam; par-tay animal I am 😹

I gotta say I'm a year-round-knitter. I do have those moments every year where I try to knit for the season I'm in and I just can't. My mojo dies until I allow myself to knit the sweater I want, the shawls I want, and let myself jump between projects as my motivation moves around. Lor's yarns are amazing!! I made a shawl from her Laima base and it is the best thing I have ever knit.

So good to see you again! You have talked about so many topics that it would take me an hour to comment on all. So just a few points 1) if I would move like +1500 km from my current home it would take me a lot of time to get settled again. So take your time. 2) I am very much looking forward to sweater school. 3) Are there also crocheters and crochet designers on your discord server? 4) I have looked at babycat yarns and others taht you mention but being in Europe, buying from them is waaaay out of my budget and (to be honest) not worth the money. I don't mean the money spend on the yarn but the money spend on transport and taxes and import duties. So I have been looking at Hobbii and Holst and I would love to see you give us some alternatives that you think are good for your designs. 5) looking forward to the cowl and stolen spoons light. Thank you for your video, Anna from Belgium

Thank you! When I use Baby Cat Yarn, it's 100% merino. That means that any merino yarn of the same weight is a good alternative. Holst and Hobbii are also great alternatives for all of my designs, even though they're not 100% merino. For example, I've used Knit Picks in 2 designs (The Golden Hall and Stolen Silver Spoons) and Hobbii would be a perfect substitute for that! Their DK would also work wonderfully in I Am No Man. And Holst would be great for The Chiefest Calamity - it's a perfect colorwork yarn. 😄 There aren't crochet designers yet, but they are welcome! And there are plenty of folks who crochet on the main server.

👍🏻 LOVE that Slumber color! (It’s a dead ringer for ‘Sandman’ from Rise of the Guardians!)

For my bday I was gifted a Knit Picks gift card and I just purchased some Shire Heather for a cable cardigan I am going to make. Your piece looks lovely.
