I am in LOVE with nearly everything The Petite Knitter (confusing name!) designs! As soon as I cast off my current WIP, next up is her Dandewishes Sweater!
I've never knitted a jumper before and now I really want to! Although it's so hard for me to find the right fit even when I can buy stuff in a shop, I'm so particular 😅 lovely video, they're all amazing examples of where our creativity can take us ❤
I think there a little acceptance involved that the first few aren’t going to be perfect fit but it really helped me get in tune with what fit I like and why. Also, thank you!
Ever since I saw your halibut sweater I've been keeping an eye on Caitlin Hunter's patterns. I also love the look of multi-colored yarn with a solid base color in colorwork. I'm currently working on my first colorwork sweater, the Grærup Sweater on ravelry. I had impulse purchased some red superwash merino on ebay that wasn't really enough for a full sweater. So I just bought a bunch of other yarn to go with it. I got the bright red, a less-saturated pink, (off) white, and gray. Then I ended up mashing the two different colorways the pattern comes with together so it would work with 4 colors instead of 5. Still unsure about my choices, but it's looking okay so far!
I like the kosekofte sweater. I’d probably do a navy or dark brown with a lighter contrast. I made the Embrace sweater and the 100% That Witch sweater last year, they were both super fun colorwork. I plan to make the Halibut sweater (glad to hear you liked the pattern) and the Porcelain sweater in the near future. But they’re both going to be gifts.
Yarn tip: Icelandic wool is slightly water repellant and really good for a sweater (or cardigan) you want to wear outside without a coat over it. You can probably find Istex Lettlopi (worsted) or Alafosslopi (bulky) in the USA.
I'm in love with your choices and want them all! Looking forward to more videos like this. Would like to see one on designers with the most well written/most comprehensive patterns too. I would rather be an informed knitter with info thru out. It helps if new to something or if need to modify.
The Petite Knitter does her photos near Iqualuit, Nunavut, in the Arctic part of Canada. I am sure she probably uses other villages as well, but basically on Baffin Island in the Northeast part of the country. I absolutely love her patterns.
I knit Dark Academia by Sharon Hartley. It goes up to a size 66.5 inch chest, so its pretty size inclusive and has color work beyond the yoke. I did do the trick of letting a multicolor yarn do the work by using it as the contrast color. Turned out really nice.
I think people misunderstand what it means to "handwash" a sweater. Firstly, you do it maybe once or twice a season, which is not a big deal. Secondly, it means submerging the sweater in soapy water, letting it soak for 20 min, taking it out and spreading it flat to dry. This is literally the same amount of effort as putting it in the washing mashine, letting it do its job, taking it out and spreading it flat to dry :)
@@BreathingYarnI hand wash most of my clothes, it’s very therapeutic also your clothes last longer . Always remember to wash and rinse knitwear in luke warm water, I’m Scottish and we mostly hang our knitwear outside to dry weather permitting
That Fortuna's Wheel Pullover pattern looks amazing. Definitely my style; I've always liked trippy/wacky/fun clothing with a baggy fit. Right up my alley especially with the black & white checkerboard look (also a favourite of mine). If I were more skilled at knitting I'd make it! Unfortunately I find knitting to be complicated, I only enjoy making blankets/scarves. I love the motions of knitting/purling and find it relaxing once in a rhythm. Mainly use knitting for when I want to zone out and relax. Anything more than that stresses me out, I don't enjoy challenges when it comes to knitting lol. I'm far more skilled/versatile at crochet however crocheted sweaters just don't look as good to me compared to knitted ones, and that's something I'm just gonna have to live with sadly xD. For now I'll prob settle with knitting myself a checkerboard pattern scarf or blanket!
4 of these are on my list already! I am almost done with my first ever sweater, and while I don't know if I like it personally, I have learned so much and I am incredibly excited to get to knit more garments, especially out of my own handspun.
@@BreathingYarnyea I fell down the rabbit hole a year ago! It gives a whole new dimension to the sustainability issue, but also it's just really satisfying to spin. Plus you don't need much, just some fiber and a spindle :)
Looove the selection of patterns you've chosen here 💕 I never knew I needed a horse sweater this badly before LOL. As for thepetiteknitter, she lives in Nunavut, Canada, and all of her pattern photoshoots are done in those arctic landscapes! It's really stunning.
After watching this I really want to dive into some colorwork this year.... I have been dreaming of making some of these patterns and I think I'm just going to do it! I'm thinking of starting with the Tessellated Pullover with a skein of variegated yarn I've had in my stash... now just to find something that matches for the other colors!
The horse sweater seems like a real fun one to start with! As for future categories, how about beanies that incorporate different techniques of knitting?
I've been so drawn colorwork this year. I'm just finishing up a free Cowl pattern I found called Potato Doodle Cowl by Jamie Lomax. It's hilarious imo, I love it so much. Not a sweater, but it's taken me less than a week and she also has a ton of other cowl variation patterns (paid) but I love them all 😍. Can't wait to see what you do next.
Not a knitter here, I only crochet. And have to say some of those patterns make me want to start knitting. Maybe next year! Thanks for the inspiration.
I just started the “Still Light Tunic” (pockets built in!!!!) as a gift for a friend with the intent of some basic colorwork. This video is perfectly timed.
Colorwork is my favorite too. I’ve made some of my all time favorite designs (like the Lumme and Porcelain Sweater) very early on in my knitting journey and I kind of regret it now because I used some shitty yarn, but I also don’t really want to knit the same design twice 😅 luckily there’s always more to find!
I don’t wanna push you out of your comfort zone but I’d just recommend trying one row on a project that switches colors every other stitch (you can totally unravel this when you’re done and I wouldn’t spend more than 5 minutes on it) it’s just amazing that stranded color work is the same knit stitches, just grabbing a different yarn color each stitch. It’s not hard with a lot of colors, just a little frustrating because they can get tangled up really easily, but 2 colors is totally doable.
I discovered your channel with this video and I'm so happy UA-cam suggested it to me! I struggle to find knitting podcast/vlogs that I really like so when I find one it's a victory 🥳 I particularly like that you talk of so many designers unknown to me (with so many beautiful patterns!), I was getting tired of always hearing about the same ones. I’ve made the regular Gustav (without crochet double stitch) and it’s actually mock cabling! Don’t let it daunt you, it’s a very fun knit that I put off for way too long because I was scared. And now it’s one of my faves to wear, I made it in bright marigold orange.
I couldn't ever decide on this either. My ravelry queue has hundreds of colourwork patterns in it 😂 I'm quite sure about the next few projects, but after that I'll have to use a random number generator or something to decide 😅

A video I want to see anywhere is like highly complex or into knits. Things that are really engaging or interesting construction. I’ve knit the Focused On Lines cardigan and it was such an interesting construction. The Joan Shirt was so no basic bitch- the challenge and no stockinette in sight was what drew me in. Complicated knits that don’t go together the way you would think like things knit horizontally instead of vertically going across the body. Of pieces that start in the center and spiral out to make the garment.
I just made my first stranded colorwork. Just two colors. It was so much easier than I thought. I’m going to start a mosaic this week with the Pressed Flowers pattern. Great video.
My first mosaic knit was the nightshift shawl and its very easy, so I felt very comfortable jumping into making the Alpenglow sweater and its my favorite make to date 😁
