Synopsis: author Robert Cardiff thinks he has enough problems just trying to research details for his latest book on Kenya, when one obstruction seems to follow upon another. But far worse is to come when he finds himself the focus of police attention when an ex girlfriend is murdered. Is it just coincidence, or are the two as connected as they seem? Robert is about to discover, whether he wants to or not...
Spolier: Plot daftness... If marriage was forbidden by the terms of the will, why did they get married in the first place, as they were intending to keep it secret? There would be no financial or practical gain by having a secret certificate. Was it their strong moral code that drove them to the altar?
Very enjoyable. September 2024 however Cardiff would never have got through life with that attitude and I always disliked the Actors voice, too harsh and abrupt, regardless of the part he played.
A goodish whodunit but Cardiff is a rather stupid and unattractive character, which, in a play where there are no other attractive characters, is rather monotonous, no light and shade just unrelenting bloody mindedness.
Mysteries like this need to be careful of the Chekhov's Gun principle (Anton Chekhov the playwright once wrote that if you have a gun showing on the set in the first act, it must be used by the end of the second act). I have so far only listened to the first hour, but I believe I have solved the general shape of the mystery some time ago, due to that principle. After I've finished listening, I'll come back and tell you if I was right or not. (Spoilers follow) I was right, to the extent that I knew it had to do with the refusal of Mrs. Lucas to grant the interview, otherwise there was no sense to including that plot point, and especially there was no point in making that the title of the piece. That latter was, I think, a bad mistake in a whodunnit.
There was a deluge of unexpected " revelations " during the last 10 minutes - many of them completely lacking in logic . Writers concoct what they believe to be an intriguing plot but , alas, upon reaching the last chapter they realise they haven't thought it through properly ! Hence the sudden revelations. !
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you.
Marvelous! Simply marvelous! Thank you ❤

Gripping stuff, really enjoyed this.
Excellent play. While everyone was good I really enjoyed the chief inspectors dialog and tone. 1st. Class all round.
Awesome!
Fantastic
Convoluted plot with satisfyingly unpleasant overbearing police officer eventually proved wrong.
😊
OH DEAR ! ....There's been a Mah-dur....!!!!
Rattling good story; great acting. Some well-known names there, plus others I'd never heard of. All good though.

"Who was 'Sanni'?
Telling a horse to "shut up" is offputting. In a snooty tone is telling.

@@2msvalkyrie529 Would you send me to work. Your comment is so informative, and I am interested in a mystery that does it right. Thank you.
A bit too far fetched and well...
