  • Why does your shoulder hurt? There could be many causes of shoulder pain. Today I’m sharing 12 of my favorite tests you can do at home to diagnose your shoulder pain symptoms and help you to feel better. These tests will help determine the cause of your shoulder pain; an important first step in receiving the right treatment. A shoulder pain evaluation from a doctor of physical therapy.

    ================
    THE SHOULDER TESTS PRESENTED IN THIS VIDEO ARE MEANT TO BE USED FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES AND IN NO WAY REPRESENT AN INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS OR PLAN OF CARE. FOR SUCH DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN, YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT A LOCAL PHYSICAL THERAPIST OR DOCTOR.
    ================
    Your shoulder is one of the most-complex joints in your body. It’s the most mobile joint you have, but it also has to be very strong and stable to function properly. There are multiple ligaments that tie the joint together and many muscles/tendons that move the shoulder through its available range of motion.
    When everything functions properly the shoulder joint is an amazing structure.
    However, due to the complex nature of the shoulder there are many things that can potentially go wrong with it. Tendonitis, arthritis, bursitis, labral tears, shoulder impingement, and rotator cuff problems are just a few of the most-common shoulder issues that I deal with as a physical therapist.
    These shoulder conditions can be very painful and interfere with many of the activities that we go through on a daily basis.
    Each of these shoulder problems is treated a little differently, so it’s important to figure out exactly what’s causing your pain. Fortunately there are many tests and other evaluation tools you can actually perform right at home to help determine the most-likely cause of your shoulder pain.
    In this video, I’ll walk you through some of the best, simplest tests you can perform on your own to determine the cause of your shoulder symptoms. You can then use these findings to help guide you to the best treatment plan to help alleviate your pain.
    Here’s the thing - this is a LOT of information and there are a LOT of tests to cover. My goal is to provide you with as comprehensive a video as possible while not boring you with the super small details. That said, this is a longer video, but my goal was to provide you with the best video possible to hopefully help diagnose your shoulder pain.
    If you’d like to cut right to the issue you know you’re experiencing, please see the time stamps below to scroll forward in this video.
    1. CERVICAL RADICULOPATHY: 1:44
    2. IMPINGEMENT TESTS: 2:22
    3. ROTATOR CUFF TENDONITIS: 5:22
    4. ROTATOR CUFF TEAR: 7:05
    5. BURSITIS: 10:18
    6. SHOULDER OSTEOARTHRITIS: 11:32
    7. AC JOINT TESTS: 13:50
    8. LABRUM / SLAP TEAR TESTS: 15:35
    9. SHOULDER INSTABILITY TESTS: 16:49
    So what’s the next step after you reach a diagnosis? Typically the emphasis is increasing shoulder range of motion, improving rotator cuff strength, or some combination of both! Here are my go-to exercises to help alleviate the shoulder pain symptoms you might be experiencing:
    IMPINGEMENT: • How To ELIMINATE Shoul...
    INCREASE RANGE OF MOTION / SHOULDER STRETCHING: • Frozen Shoulder GONE! ...
    IMPROVE ROTATOR CUFF STRENGTH: • How To Strengthen Rota...
    As always, I hope the things that I share on this channel help to alleviate some of your pain and help you to become the fittest, healthiest version of yourself.

    I am a veteran paratrooper, with numerous injuries sustained from my service. I do not have health insurance, as I simply haven't been able to afford it for several years. the VA only treats people who were wounded in combat, so I'm left to the wind with pre-existing conditions that no one was willing to treat even when I had insurance.
    you have given me peace of mind because I can simply muscle through the pain because I have impingement and likely tendonitis.
    I've deep shoulder pain you're more than 30 years as a result, which has been manageable by keeping my shoulders strong. but for the last year or two, I haven't been able to find anything that works
    while sleeping will still be quite a painful experience, I am delighted beyond words that I can enjoy doing the things I need to do and like to do without worrying if I will completely destroy my arm beyond any affordable repair.
    thank you so much

    Both of you have done an excellent job by demonstrating where the shoulder pain is normally generated. In my case I'm 77 year old with arthritis and now I know the 80 percent is due to this decease. Some of the test you show I have mild pain others are not. Thanks for so explicit and informative video.

    I got a positive result from the first test yesterday. My right elbow wouldn't go higher than my shoulder level. Then, I watched your shoulder impingement video and did the exercises and stretching. Today, I get both positive and negative results depending on my shoulder joint location. I see a huge improvement already. Thank you.

    I have been several of your videos and they have been great. Resolved several minor problems. I was still having a problem so I watched this video. It appears to be Labrum issue. Any exercises that would help? I also have a pain at times with bench press that also makes a sound like two items rubbing against each other. It keeps me in a light weight for bench and an on again and off again related to push ups? Any ideas?

    2 months ago i slipped on wet pavement breaking my fall by extending one arm. Since thenive been experiencing Dull aching pain and shooting pain when lifting or throwing. After watching your video it looks like i might have an AC joint problem. Unable to afford a trip to the doctor but its nice to have a better understanding of what's going on. Thank you.

  • @justinbartolini6039
    @justinbartolini6039 4 роки тому

    Thanks, it seems like the AC joint test somewhat hit on my issue but another position that bothers me the most is if I bring my right elbow above my head with my right hand on my left shoulder and then I grab my right elbow with my left hand and rotate my upper arm in the shoulder socket towards the front of the body - this causes me the most discomfort. All of this is on a lower discomfort level but I worry when ever I start to have any irritation. Years ago I separated my shoulder - I wonder if this could be part of the issue? I would be beyond thankful for any information but am grateful that you take the time to produce such an informative video - I seem to not really have major issues with any of the tests yet the ac one and the one following it tend to reproduce the most discomfort - also push-ups are starting to bug me a little and I have been using the form suggested in becoming a supple leopard for a few years now - thanks again! I love this stuff and just subscribed!

    Very helpful! I had an actual thin small tear down my right bursa a few years back. It got better then my left shoulder started bothering me. That went away after a few months. THEN, right shoulder pain again, different spot. After 6 months or so I finally went to a specialist. They thought it was an impingement. Sent me to therapy. After about 2 or 3 sessions the activities started causing severe neck pain (I have a bulging disc on the right side). I had to stop. It still hurts a lot and I sleep on that side. I don’t know what to do since the therapy makes my neck hurt too much (and I’m not trying to get a disc replacement on my neck😳!) I took these tests -- my should hurt just from using it each time. Couldn’t do the partner ones yet but the most painful was the osteoarthritis one. And my shoulder pops each time I raise it. Can’t lift past 45 degrees or so without pain. Do you have a video on osteoarthritis? Still not sure it’s that but I’m over 50. I did have X-rays but she didn’t mention osteoarthritis.

    Hi I love this video. I was just wondering what you think about massage for frozen shoulder. I can’t have a normal massage as it’s too painful to lay on my front , or for anyone to even touch my shoulder. I I have a self automatic shoulder massage belt that wraps around your shoulders . Do you think this is a help with the knots in my shoulders or so you think it will the inflammation pain worse ? Also I have been sleeping (well limited sleep) on my back as this is the only position I can find to get any rest supported by lots of pillows under my shoulder and knees .

    Enjoyable and informative however I can’t seem to find any cause for my pain with presents mainly in the middle to rear of my deltoid as well as in the scapula area when I reach behind the car seat. I’m hoping it’s lingering pain from deltoid flys with dumbbells, which I’ve stopped doing.

    BTW - I'm a 61 year old man - very active, do lots of pushups, band work, HIIT running, biking. I recently started getting horrible should pain during workouts that now seems to bother me at night and when I do that first test for shoulder impingement. I also have a VERY sore spot in the back of my shoulder blade that seems to be connected. Not knowing anything about this, I assumed I had possibly suffered a rotator cuff tear. But after doing your tests, it appears that I might have an impingement instead. Anyway, really thought this was an excellent video to explain this stuff. I'll try some of the exercises you suggested and see if I can get a handle on this - and of course will talk to my doctor if it persists. Been going on for over a month now. Old ain't for babies, man. LOL! Thanks again for your help and info.

    I wish my doctor would learn this kind of tests. I saw him for shoulder pain and got medication without any test but just based on 3 simple questions. No wonder I am still in pain after 12 weeks

    Hi there, great video. I have a sharp pain in my shoulder and on the back of the shoulder. I also have pain when I lift my head up, and then all my shoulder and arm just get Nam, if I put my head down for 3 seconds then all is ok, but the shoulder and arm and back of shoulder is in pain, a sharp pain. The pain pint I fill is in the elbow+arm+shoulder+back of shoulder+neck. I did all your tests as you showed, I still not sure what is the source of the pain, the central cause of the pain. I did a X-Ray test and a C.T. test and they found that in my spine C5-C7 the gap is very low, but the did not think that that is the cause of the pain.

    My shoulder has been rocked lately. Not sure what the cause it. Can't rotate in certain positions, feels like it's going to pop out. Also feels very tight. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.
    Also, there is definitely popping and clicking during certain motions.

    I was recommended your video to strengthen my rotator cuff over the phone by an NHS phisio after hurting my shoulder during sleeping( there is such a shortage they have to do diagnosis over the phone) She thinks strengthening my rotator cuff will help. I then saw this video and looks like I tested positive for inpingment and AC. Any advice for side sleepers? I don't know how to stop hurting it over and over. 😬

    Both the rotator cuff tendinitis and rotator cuff tear (couldn’t move right palm very high nor off the back at all) were positive. Is this positive for tear or could RC tendinitis cause both of these to be positive? Thanks! Your video was the most helpful one I’ve found. Also I’m assuming I need to see an orthopedist and that there aren’t exercises that will help this? I fell over my dog who followed me and laid down behind me and I fell when I turned to walk away in that direction. Right arm reached forward to catch myself falling onto concrete trying to miss the dog.

    Very nice and useful self-testing. I have a sharp sting on my left shoulder when I SIMPLY RAISE MY ARM SIDEWAYS (so that, for instance, your “pushing through the doorway” exercise for posture is almost impossible for me, when I have to keep the arm parallel to the floor). Strangely enough, you did not treat this simple test. I suspect that the sting is due to some “overlapping” of the anterior and medium deltoids. Could you spend a couple of words on this “muscular” (I suspect) cause of pain? Thx.
    ps: oh, forgot mentioning that I just turned 60. Maybe arthritis?

    Uff, I am glad to confirm that none of these conditions apply to me... for now!! :D I already have enough in my plate as it is, so pfhh glad I dodged that one !! THANK YOU SO MUCH to the both of you for this new video. I love it when Camille assists you. She is too cute! I was cracking when she laughed as you were trying to push her arms/elbows together. You two make a super wonderful team. Video very much LIKED in capital letters. Blessings forever.

      I spoke too soon! Just when I was thinking I was off the hook, you made her flip and I also felt like my hand was glued to my back.! I didnt really feel a tough pain but more like it was difficult to move it even a few inches. I felt the pressure on my upper back shoulder. Is that a positive for a rotator cuff tear? :((

      Absolutely amazing video!!! I think I am good, too. I think what I have is a stiff back shoulder because I still need to work on my stretchings, but I dont think I have any serious condition for now in that area, I hope! You guys are wonderful!! It was really nice to hear Camille's voice every little once in a while hahaha. Dont be shy, Camille!! You add a very special touch to the videos with your participation :)) Keep up the great work super sweetest couple!!!!

    I’ve watched a lot of videos trying to figure out what’s wrong with my shoulder. I’ve gone to a chiropractor too! Your video was so informative. I did all of the tests and just as I suspected, my problem likely pertains to my rotator cuff. 😢 However, it also looks like I have an issue with instability as well. I guess that makes sense though since I’ve been dealing with this for quite awhile so there’s probably some atrophy going on. Grrr.
