Mercedes tech here. Had the opportunity to drive one of these a while ago (still havent broken down so we havent seen these in the shop yet). But all I can say is that this thing is on a level of its own. I have never in my life driven anything like it, its an experience you have to experience to understand. One thing Sarah forgot to mention that is really cool on these is that the whole instrumentcluster is 3D, which is especially cool if you have the nagivationscreen selected, feels like looking into the screen.
3:15 - Those dimples serve the same purpose under the car that they serve on the golf ball. They create a boundary layer of air around the surface, allowing for smoother airflow around that boundary layer. On the golf ball, that gives the ball greater aerodynamic efficiency to allow the ball to travel farther. On the underside of the car, it will allow the car to experience less drag due to the way that air is made to flow underneath it. The Ferrari F12 has air channels that run from the grille to the center of the hood, and from the upper-outer sections of the hood to the sides of the car just below the A pillars. Those channels help to create a similar aerodynamic boundary effect on the top & sides of the car.
Ya they are great on a curved surface, like vortex generators. Not sure how much of an improvement it is on a flat service. I bet they did the math though.
Love the sparky things when you tap the chassis. I know I can't afford a MB, but seriously appreciate the crazy engineering. Absolutely love your way of describing a beautiful machine such as this. Ruffles at the bottom of your pants are neat and unusual.
Honestly this channel is amazing! It’s nice to see someone talking of the mechanicals and not just talking about interiors and entertainment systems. Thanks for creating this 👍
Great review. I’m getting ready to buy an S580 (been an S class person for 30 years). I find your videos refreshing because they combine facts/numbers with humorous impressions. Most UA-cam videos are either/or. I grew up in a metric country also. Thanks!
I've been working at an independent MBZ shop for 25 years. This is the kind of POS that will finally make me move on to something else in life. Recently bought a 2020 TRD Pro 4Runner because it's such a "dinosaur". I want a car to work for me...not the other way around. The mere thought of the conversations I will be forced to have with customers about these cars makes me want to retire right NOW! Thanks for the review Sarah!
Posts like this are so disingenuous. "I want a Fred Flintstone car", great - go by one. The only thing that is constant is change. Modern manufacturers are forced to make cars like this due to cost and regulation.
@@rachegreenrg not to mention, other than the hybrid aspect of this car, I don't think any of the features Sarah mentioned here are due to cost and regulation being pushed upon the manufacturer. Rear-steer and discotech interior lighting 🤣
This is the first mechanical review ive seen and I love it! Im a diehard mercedes fan, but I never get to see a review of one of these newer cars from a mechanic's point of view. It was insightful, thanks!
The panel dimpling: on a golf ball, it reduces overall air resistance. So I expect this application has the same purpose. The skinny antisway bar maintains more compliance on rough roads, but seems inadequate, yes. The difference in lateral resistance to body lean is taken care of by the "E-Active Body Control" system on a constantly adjusted thousanth-of-a-second analysis basis, per the MB site.
It will be difficult for you to give up ICE technology, but some fine electric cars are here. Please spend a week, or so, with the Merc EQS 580 and compare it to the 580 in this most excellent video. There might be enough high tech in the EQS 580 4Matic to keep you and your penguins inspired. Thank you for keeping me inspired.
The golf ball dimples are for aerodynamics. There's a video of The Myth Busters that tested that theory on a cars outer body panels and it was shockingly impressive. Definitely worth watching.
It's amazing how far car technology has come. With the Augmented Reality navigation, if the car has active assist technologies like lane assist, collision prevention controls, etc, it could teach you how to drive without an instructor in the car. Amazing car.
Another great review, Sarah. I'm glad that you brought up the complexity and cost of servicing a vehicle like this. Lots of people don't figure that into their buying decision and end up having a heart attack when they take it in for service.
That's why most people lease high end cars and dump them after a few years. Car companies still get their sales numbers, it's the 2nd or 3rd owner that's going to have a nightmare of a time maintaining them
I have the S500 with the upgrade in the rear seats. It's not just heated seats. They have all the functions of the front seats, including massage and 4D sound. A must have...
Very interesting, informative, intelligent and sassy review. Rarely see reviews where the underside and the engineering is so closely scrutinised. Many valid and astute observations Sarah. Whoa all that plastic is scary and looks very cheap and flimsy like it won't last very long. Yeah Sarah sure will be challenging when diagnosing electrical gremlins in 20 years time! Had a friend with a 6 month old E320cdi and Mercedes could not pinpoint the fault so they ended up just replacing all the ECUs and a range of other components, crossing their fingers that they'd managed to rectify it.
You're completely on the money giving it the lowest wrench score ever. I've logged a lot of miles in high- mileage examples of MB S550s as a professional driver. The massage feature kept me from having to visit a chiropractor in 80 hour weeks behind the wheel. There is a reason why these tend to be leased, and why they lose >$100K in value by the end of a lease. They are extremely fun to drive right up until they're not. Too often they've become so mechanically crippled that to fix the components only MB has the diagnostic workstation to reflash or reset, you would be way ahead by parting it out. So they stay broken. I'd wager 95% of the black car service MB sedans are limping along with some major feature or several being broken.

One of the points that car reviewers fail to highlight when testing cars is RELIABILITY. This is clearly a time-dependent aspect, therefore difficult to estimate when testing a new car for a few hours or a few days. But it is also one of the most important points for those looking at reviews. This is precisely why many of us enjoy your videos and especially the sessions where you lift the cars and analyse them from below. When you show the bottom of the car, many are interested in the technology, but many also try to understand whether the quality of the materials and technical choices will allow the car to last for many years. A tip: you could introduce a score (Ants? Camels?) to estimate the reliability of the car. We all know Lexus are the most reliable cars, but these are beliefs developed over the years and they are not immutable. For example, many reviewers like the Lexus NX 2022 but argue that the Genesis GV70 is better. It would be interesting to see if Genesis is improving reliability and the GV70 can be expected to last as long as a Lexus NX or if it's just a nice car to keep for the first 70,000km.
Great review Sara. Thank you 😊 for talking about the Audio Systems between the Lexus and the Mercedes. It’s hard to find people that talk about the differences when it comes to audio. In most cases poor audio is a dealbreaker unless were speaking about an exotic car where performance is the up most concern
Mercedes made a beautiful S class inside and out. I was really on the the edge of my seat for the wrench score. This is the kind of stupid bad idea car I would buy when it has depreciated 95% in ten years. But by then everything will probably be electric and who knows if this will be more or less desirable then. Great review, entertaining as always!!!
As said, the golf ball dimples increase aero dynamics, it can also be done to inlet manifolds to increase air flow and can now be found on fan blades, again to increase air flow and reduce noise.
Amazing amount of tech in this car, most of which seems to be designed to isolate the occupants from any driving sensations. Obviously, this isn't intended to be M-B's driver's car, nor is this the kind of car people would keep for many years and hundreds of thousands of miles. M-Bs in general are known to become money pits as they age, due in part to the expensive parts and all that complex engineering which requires mechanics to disassemble half the car to get at things that only require removing a few bolts on "lesser" cars. Great review, and it's nice to see a car like this reviewed from a more "regular person" reviewer than typical for something like this.
Wow, what a next level driving experience you conveyed from the front seat! All the info and comfort tech there will not be commonplace for years. However, I saw the most joy on your face when you found the pillow in the back seat. Loved that!
Actually able to see the rear steering at 10:08 Honda had it on the 3rd gen Prelude and it was amazing to drive, really helped with tight corners and parking.

No need to worry, Sarah - the fully EV EQS is just sublime. You should try it out - it makes every other non-EV luxury car feel so last millenium. I am not normally into luxury cars, but the EQS just blew me away completely.
The “ball in the bowl” G-meter. Stirling Moss - British F1 racing driver of the fifties & sixties - used an actual ball-in-a-bowl glued to the bonnet (hood) of training cars to teach his students how much quicker progress is possible with a smoother driving style…
Also pushing the boundaries on when parts break or fail. Seriously, a plastic transmission tray?? MB has quality, but has been completely lost in the reliability segment.
The dimples in a golf ball is for aerodynamics as it probably is on that car. Not only do you need weird tools the diagnostic software for Mercedes is proprietary and very expensive. Most mechanics can’t justify the expense therefore your only option is the Mercedes dealer. If you have to ask the cost of the repair, you can’t afford it! Impressive tech on this entry level conspicuous consumption vehicle! The Lexus will probably last longer with less headaches but doesn’t have the German engineering mystique.
Benz has always made an amazing car. They sure don’t seem to last or hold their value. Love to have one for the first part of its life. I don’t think I can afford the air in the tires. Great review!
Nice review as always Sarah. You may want to consider adding a link to your second channel in the description to make it easier for us to check it out. May you and yours be well, j
The golf ball dents on the plastic shield is to artificially create low air pressure under the car at high speeds. It helps push the car lower at speed. Of course I just made all that up.
The version with the 10⁰ rear steer makes these so easy to put on my hoist at work. Love these cars... depending on the version, there are over 110 individual modules. The ball joint nuts are technically single use and must be replaced every time they come off. The front anti roll bar end links bolt right through the upper knuckle... these will be an issue in the rust belt... tons of cool tech in this car too
My favorite luxury car is Mercedes. But that heads-up display looks soo cool even through your camera that it makes me want to get one just for that alone. The only problem is that I would have to become nocturnal just to play with it all the time lol.

Mercedes is torx and e-torx, metric obviously. You need sets of both to work on them. Mercedes also use big size nuts and bolts. They're cheap to buy. Get Mercedes parts from FCP Euro in states. They're actually fairly easy to work on
My S560 has the option of displaying ft/lbs produced and an accelerometer which displays g force with a red ball moving on a 360 degree display , in the tachometer nacelle.
I’m sure you’re going to get a thousand different explanations for the dimples. My version is hopefully simpler. The dimples create less surface area for the wind to interact with. On a golf ball, the dimples help the ball go further, faster and straighter!

Even after two cups of joe, my head was swimming with all the descriptions you were giving. Just great. Just over half the cost of my house though. probably worth it. You must be pretty honest and consistent. I say this using only the penguin score and I was able to guess 3,8 after the other three were given. Amazing resolution on the camera aimed at your face while behind the wheel (and no, no pores were visible)
The 3 separated coolant tanks are from the engine ( the big one ), the transmission, and the micro-hybrid part. I might be wrong on the third one but pretty sure, because I saw this in person on an other European hybrid car.
"And for how it sounds....", then a Noosa ad with falling fruit on an umbrella... what an exhaust sound that is :) Adding to this, great review. I'd bet the golf ball parts have to do with airflow. I love the Navi in HUD. If Subaru had that, no way would I change the head unit out.
Mercedes engineering has been superlative for decades. But, as Sarah noted at a couple places in her review, service can be insanely expensive because some of the components are very difficult to access, and some require partial disassembly of other components before you can even get to them, not to mention the specialized tools needed for actual service. Finally, note that Mercedes is NEVER on anyone's list of "most reliable" vehicles. With a lot of TLC ($$), they can last a very long time, but the cost per mile can get ridiculous. No thank you, especially at this price point.
Well, to be fair Mercedes-Benz made very reliable, durable cars up until the 90s, when leasing became the norm. Their customers don't need the cars to last as long, so they don't bother.
If you have owned or worked on any Mercedes in the last 20 years you would know that the engineering has been anything but superlative. Lots of flashy, gimmicky tech for sure, but at the expense of getting the fundamental engineering right.
There is a difference between robust and reliable, both will last, one will feel the same after 20 yrs, the other wouldnt require alot of maintenance but will feel like it had t been maintained.. So

Mythbusters did an episode where they clad an entire car with dimpling to see if it improved the car's aerodynamics.
Didn't Bugatti add some of those on the roof of the Divo, or one of their other one-off or limited builds?
The new WRX actually has that texturing on the ugly wheel arches.
I remember a mithbusters show and they did this in clay on top of the car. Very interesting.
@@jaydub5515 the Bugatti Bolide features it
The dimples act exactly like the surface of a golf ball for aerodynamics it actually smooths out the boundary layer air flow for sound reduction.
I agree 100%, I was going to make the same comment
Ya they are great on a curved surface, like vortex generators. Not sure how much of an improvement it is on a flat service. I bet they did the math though.

The golf ball dimples on the bottom is strength but also aerodynamics. Take a look at the myth busters episode where they dimple an entire car.
Great job Miss Sparkle fingers. Love your videos.
Thanks for actual info during a review esp the materials, wow, just wow. I miss the 108 series which was such a dream to work on.
HUD is SICK, and the startup (Michael Bay transformers) sounds is next level (Bend over) if anything malfunctions.
@sarah-n- tuned seeing you in expensive cars is oddly satisfying
Interesting Car, I prefer the simplicity of the 1966 230 sedan we used to have. Thanks and Happy New Year Sarah 😀👍🇨🇦
Thank you Sarah for an excellent start to your car reviews for 2022! Any chance of getting your hands on the EQS next?
Thanks for the metric figures, including the L/100km and saying aluminium properly. 🙂👍
I learn so much from your reviews. They are awesome.
Next level engistyling!
Happy new year Sarah, this AMG is a power beast!!!
Sarah I've Been A Huge Fan For A Long Time!!! THIS WAS AN AWESOME REVIEW, Love The Next Level Technology... 💯💯💯💯💯
Thank you Sarah, for showing mileage as KM, go metric!
Anytime!
"And for how it sounds....", then a Noosa ad with falling fruit on an umbrella... what an exhaust sound that is :)
Adding to this, great review. I'd bet the golf ball parts have to do with airflow. I love the Navi in HUD. If Subaru had that, no way would I change the head unit out.
Nothing beats the BMW 7 series in terms of handling and steering feedback.
Congratulations - I heard every word : ) Have an amazing new year beautiful Sarah!
Friends don't let Friends buy German
Well, to be fair Mercedes-Benz made very reliable, durable cars up until the 90s, when leasing became the norm. Their customers don't need the cars to last as long, so they don't bother.
If you have owned or worked on any Mercedes in the last 20 years you would know that the engineering has been anything but superlative. Lots of flashy, gimmicky tech for sure, but at the expense of getting the fundamental engineering right.
I own an E Klasse and definitely a maintenance hog and I do the work myself using $300 of Mercedes specific tools for my car. LoL
There is a difference between robust and reliable, both will last, one will feel the same after 20 yrs, the other wouldnt require alot of maintenance but will feel like it had t been maintained.. So
Happy New Year Sarah! Another great car review! That's quite the car for 138k! Take care! Can't wait to see more on your grandmother's 94 Ford Ranger!
LOL! I guess you like those magical seats? Thanks for the review and have a Happy New Year Sarah!
Happy New Year, Sarah.
You made me feel all kinds of warm inside. Talking about the seats.
Keeping your eye on the ball can't be distracting a single bit...
Amazing car. Great review and content Sarah.
Another great review, especially the seats lol. Really enjoyed watching this one.
