Listen to it enough and it fades into the background. And in the original TIE Fighter game you can use the pitch of that cockpit whine to determine by ear how high your throttle is set.
TIE pilots have to wear spacesuits because the fighter itself doesn't have life support, which means the cockpit itself is in vacuum. In-world, they wouldn't hear anything while in space.

Go to a dirt racing track to see 410 Sprint Cars. You will see and hear where the inspiration for the TIE fighter sound came from!
