- We're over in Hannover Germany for the launch of the new Volkswagen Transporter (or is it a T7 I'm still confused)
We asked you on social media what you wanted us to find out, so we've tried to answer all your questions here...
How much of the New Volkswagen Transporter is just a Ford Transit Custom?
What engines are in them?
Where are they built?
Who build them?
What spec option do they have?
What's the build quality like?
How much will they cost?
Why have VW done the collaborated with Ford?
When can we get a new VW Transporter?
All these questions and lots more. It's a long video, but it's worth a watch, I promise.
If we have missed anything, please add it to the comments below, we'll do all we can to answer anything we've missed.
I hope you've enjoyed this video, please do hit that like button, it means a lot.
Please share this video with anything else interested in the New VW Transporter, or even the new Ford Transit.

As always, thanks for watching.
All these vw conversion companies trying to put a positive spin on this won’t cut it
We're not a conversion company. I'm not trying to put a positive spin on anything. I'm just telling it how I see it.

Great video lads 👍
As an engineer in R&D, it’s interesting reading people’s comments who don’t really understand how the automotive industry works. It’s an expensive game, and with cars/vans becoming more and more advanced and more expensive to manufacture you start to see stuff like this happening more often.
Thing is, it’s not the first time VW have done this either, and it’s not the first Vw to be manufactured elsewhere - in fact a lot of VW and Audi models aren’t built in Germany.
I’m interested to see how reliable the new unit is with this wet belt system. But people act like VW transporters are the most reliable things in the world and they’re really not (not from my experience owning T4, T5.1 & T6 any way). I’ve spent a few quid fixing them I’ll tell you, but T4 was probably my most reliable out the 3.
Not to mention they’ve been using the same platform for the last 22 years with what has largely been facelifts & engine changes whilst other companies have made significant changes to their lineup.
I’m keeping an open mind on it. I’m not in a position where I’ll be able to afford and experience one for a while but I’m looking forward to seeing them on the road and listening to owners’ feedback 👍
I think most people do understand how the car industry works, we have all noticed vehicles using the same platform, particularly in the van market. We all saw this coming when the Amarok got deleted, now a Ranger. This was an inevitable consequence of VW exiting the market due to the prospect of lekki van competition and the e-transporter flopped. One less R&D team to pay for too.
I totally agree. Great comments raised there. My Transporters over the years have had their fair share of issues too. We only get to hear about the most common one though. The Ford wet belt issue is spoken about a lot. 90% of these people's mates, cousins, husbands, bothers mate had a Transit that's wet belt went. When you dive into these actual issues, maintenance and usage are key. I'll be making sure our new Transporters and serviced and maintained to VW's recommendations. If so, any issues will be covered under the VW warranty.
R.I.P New Transporter ,we all bought transporters for their quality
That engine has just killed it for a lot of people
Not everyone want the diesel. I'd buy the BEV if it was released at the same time. I'm fine with buying the diesel though. VW seem very confident in the testing of it. I promise this won't be R.I.P VW.
It’s a wet belt, oil and rubber don’t go 8k is what Ford charge for a new engine
Whole reason I bought our t6 was to avoid the wet belt issues, now they've gone and plonked one in the new transporter 😂 RIP VW
That T6 won't last forever, what do you do next? Maybe the PHEV of BEV could work for you?
@@THQAutomotive Keep your existing van until solid state battery Transporters becomes a thing.
@THQAutomotive we'll buy a vito or whatever the best alternative is.
Even if we were considering the new transporter, there's no point in buying the VW if the Ford is exactly the same but cheaper.
@@richardpickering2452I'd buy the BEV now but the diesel comes out first. I loved my ID-Buzz. I love my Taycan. EV's really suit my driving distances.
@@ChristoffelsteinI don't believe it will be cheaper though. As I say in the video, their spec's won't cross over. Example, right now an Amarok is cheaper than a ranger if you like higher spec (which I do) I'd expect the same with the custom and new Transporter. I'd also rather have VW software over Ford. Personal choice though I guess.
Sooo much information to digest. Absolutely cracking job lads.
Ps. My hats go off to you for filming that in a packed place. 🎉
The filming was easy, hats off to Massimo for editing it all in 2 days. He spent the whole day in the hotel room today editing (which is like a prison cell) while we went back to the show. We then returned with more footage to add. He still managed to get it all done ready to upload tonight.
Big effort Massimo ! Thank you very much - wish we were there and thanks to you Andy and Mikey and Massimo felt like we were there!!! Cheers boys. 🤙

@@THQAutomotive ye that’s top stuff. I guess you wanted the info out there first. Whatever people say now….. people will buy this for sure.
It’s not a transporter it just a transit with a facelift
Did you ever even watch the video 🧐 What do you expect, a T6.2 using the same chassis VW have used for 22 years? 🤷🏻♂️
@THQAutomotive a transporter with a vw engine built in Germany would be nice 😄
@@Christoffelsteinbut at what cost? The price would be more than people are prepared to pay.
Why do you think this is a solution based on cost. It's effectively deleted the T series in favour of a Ford.
@@THQAutomotive So if Ford have done the heavy lifting of developing this van.. VW should really be selling for less than the transit? will be very very interesting to see prices which ironically they are not saying yet? think this will be the make or break of this shared venture as we aren't stupid consumers and aware they are in basic the same vehicle
Happy days the t6.1 down will be going up in value. My t5.1 will be an appreciating investment (if my wife asks)
I'm afraid the T6.1 won't be going up in value as much as I'd like to agree. The motor industry doesn't work like that. I own a few so it would have been nice. The T7 / New Transporter will be bought in the thousands because average Joe doesn't care and it's considerable more advanced than the chassis VW have used for 22 years.
@@THQAutomotive if my wife asks mine is going up 😀

I am on my third transporter I have kept them for years put big mileage on all , the one previous to the one I have now I bought with 20k o on the clock ran it for seven years and sold it for exactly what I paid for clocking up 165 k apart from normal service items the only thing replaced was the turbo , the one I have now I bought with 13 k on the clock apart from bits of warranty work it had a duelmass flywheel recently at 130k I was recently offered close to what I paid for it , I have been in the motor trade all my working life now retired, , knowing the problems with that wet belt Ford engine I think VW has dropped clanger , I am a big VW fan but wont be purchasing a new one if it has that engine .
Would be good to see how this goes
So glad got one of the last t6.1 transporters on a 74 plate
I have a few T6.1's, they are my favourite of that chassis (expect the T5 pre facelift itself) but they will have to go in time. The T7 / New Transporter will replace them all. End of an era, but I'm excited by it. Can't wait to get stuck into them and make them even better.
I have a t6.1 too I have had 6 months from new. It’s a good question, my plan is that this van will last at least 6-7 years if not more. By then the Ford /VW arrangement will be over. There are too many compromises.
The faces on both of them at 23:03 after that question says it all. If you’ve got a T6.1 it’ll be money in the bank. If I wanted a Ford I’d buy a ford
@@furryfruitcake 😂😂
Top tip: clean the camera lens before filming. There’s a horrible hazy film on the lens which shows when filming. 👍🏻
It's only in some clips, it's a filter for the Osmo pocket pro. We discovered when editing, it looks better without the filter.
I don’t get the whole ‘it’s this or nothing’ argument. They now have an expansive but confused line up of Transporter/Multivan/IDBuzz. Why didn’t they just consolidate all three into one platform? I know the purists aren’t a fan of the Multivan but at least it’s a proper VW!
I question the multivan and Transporter thing myself. The ID-Buzz I get and embrace. I loved my Buzz and have a GTX on order. Should they have invested in a new Transporter and not done the multivan? From the UK it would seem so as the multivan didn't take off at all there. In Europe you see loads though. They are really popular here. Either way, looking at the numbers, Ford sell 3-4 times what VW do for LCV's. Maybe VW want a slice of the Ford business with the new Transporter?
If this takes off, ill be very surprised. I genuinely feel this is going to ruin VW's solid reputation with this creation
What's the alternative though? A T6.2 using the same chassis they've used for 22 years? I'm very confident this will take off. I can't wait to get one.
@THQAutomotive true. I think it's just the fact it's a ford in disguise. I agree, the original shape needed a change, but this was a very sharp change. I saw a ford today and compared the pics, it's just a transit with a vw badge. Maybe you'll be able to add your touches like you did the id buzz, and it'll change my mind, but for now, It's a no from me 🫣
VW need to get on with designing a T7
@@TheGrapeEscapeVanit is a lot Ford yes, but VW have added a lot in my opinion. It's very VW in styling. It's only the side profile from the behind the drivers door that's the same. The inside and software does feel very VW.
@@Phil00303still not even sure if this is a T7 or if the multivan was even a T7 🤷🏻♂️😂
Transporters and Kombis cost a fortune 40-50k a van, they ain’t making a loss on these they are making huge losses making things like Buzz’s forcing them onto dealers who are now stuck with them all. Transporters were always built out of Stronger steel than the Transits with better security and don’t rust as quick now it’s all cheap Turkish crap will still charge the VW premium I’m gunna hold onto my T6 Kombi thanks
But what next, it won't last forever? I believe them when they say a T6.1 panel van doesn't make money when built in Germany. As mention VW control their own production line in Turkish. I believe / hope, they'll have the same German standards. I can't comment on the ID-Buzz as I loved mine and have a GTX on order now.
The UK is working hard to phase out the combustion engine, so it's all academic really. Let's not worry about the wet belt, it might be obsolete anyway in a few years. VW got out of the commercial market before lekki vans take over, as VW fear they might flop.
Good, looking vehicle I like the styling yet another good video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌

I love our T6.1's. Out of interest, when it is time to change, what would you buy next?
Youl change your mind, always having electrical faults, diesal mixing with the oil. Months to get parts or an appointment at the dealership
@@THQAutomotivedefinitely not a VW Transit I guess. Sorry but if I want to buy a Ford, I would buy it at the Ford dealership. Why buying a slightly changed Ford at the VW dealer for a VW price. I think Ford , Mercedes or Stellantis offer good alternatives for a wannabe VW van! 😢
@@THQAutomotive the one I have is 30 months old
Just wanted a new one before it went ford
RIP transporter… how to kill a brand by badging a 98% designed Ford as a VW 😢 few plastic trims doesn’t transform it and investment they could have saved on other awful modes should have been wisely put into the transporter.. design not manufacture! Love change and thought there was a glimpse of originality when the ibuzz arrived if only diesel and bigger… will I invest in a transporter that is a rebadge transit? Mmm
I promise this 100% won't kill the brand. As mentioned in the video, I understand why VW had to do this to make a van that was affordable for us. Out of interest, what would you buy next when the time comes to say goodbye to your Transporter?
@@THQAutomotive Well funny you should ask as this is my time now to start looking and to be honest the thought of this van has left me in a panic! My transporter is almost 10 years old and mint condition and I look around campsites, bike events, car shows and littered with well looked after transporters but zero transits.. Transit historically were the working mans van and are built that way.. To use the argument its a cost thing to design and make so let a company used to producing and selling more vans as the argument is a worry.. design development 100% has been compromised in the pursuit of making money.. and a following of these vans no? So should the argument be the VW crafter in its next design release should be shared with another manufacture to make money but let the other company have 99% of the design decisions? ibuzz is a great example what VW can do when they try.. VW isn't a little company and has well known car brands under their bent! Only time will tell but serious decision on what I invest into next ;-/
@@StuBicknell it seems the Crafter will stay with VW if that helps.
If you've driven a new custom or even a later 2019 onwards older transit then you'd know that the transporter is so outdated it's comical. I've had both, I love VW, but ford have just got it right.
@@danlovelock778 Ya I have no doubt the Transit drives better than the dated Transporter but its the lack of investment from VW to develop it now :( they invested in the iBuzz and imo they got it right except its ev (usual not enough range) and slightly too small for my needs.. its an always what if they had developed their own van how much better it would be over a transit??
I was talking to an AA mechanic recently, they've already received training on the new engines and I quote, the new collaboration has the welt belt. 👍
Yes we know it has a wet belt. A wet belt is used in multiple engines. Ford just had a problem with how they have used it. VW seem confident with their testing and whatever changes Ford needed to do, to stop their issues.
Major reason not to buy...
So no straight answer for the engine tells me they have treid to fix a failed design. Some of the wet belt engines have had the cam belt changed to a chain BUT they left the oil pump as a welt belt. Blows my mind. Part fix. Waste of time. I have 5 Transit Customs. Engine replaced in one less than 3 years old, full hsitory and 75’000 miles. Under warranty or it would have cost me £7k plus
Looks like I am driving my T6 Kombi 2016 as my forever van now as won’t be going anywhere near this New Transporter/Custom with panels and a dash change.
Also I find it incredible to belive that with what they charge for these they can’t make money. Even to keep making the T6.1 as it was, design done, bugs fixed etc, just production costs? Really
My understand for no straight answer is, VW can't legal comment on their partners 'previous issues'
Ford won't comment as that then admitting they previously had an issue.
It appears VW and Ford are confident in what's this 'next generation' engine is.

@@THQAutomotive I totally understand that but they could tell you the spec of the NEW engine, what size it is, what power, how many turbos, if someone thought it was still a good idea to put a rubber band inside the engine running in oil etc
@@Smartie40. they engine outputs did appear on the screens last in the day actually. After we'd finished filming. As I said, I don't think the 'rubber band' is an issue when done right. Only manufacturers use a wet belt without issues I believe.
@@THQAutomotive Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and Ford are the only wet belt engines I know of and they all have the same issues. Ford is the biggest name so gets the most chatter, obviously but this is an issue that is going to get worse not better. They have made and sold these engines for a lot of years so there is a lot of pain still to come. So it will be interesting to see if VW are happy to going in the party on this one or if the engines do get a proper fix including the oil pump drive. Time will tell but this is a potentially expensive gamble and one I will not be continuing with. 5 customs with wet belts is enough all now on a vastly reduced service interval just for my own safety.
Thanks guys for the excellent video, for all us who are looking at this new t7/transporter it nice to see an in depth video by people we know and trust to give an accurate, as it is review. Think you covered all we need to know. Just that wet belt to find more about.
We'll keep digging, you have my word. I'm personally confident though, let's hope I'm not wrong 🤞
With colour coded bumpers, lowered and 20” wheels it’ll probably look good.
Only time will tell how good the engine is. I think a lot of people will wait to see if it’s reliable.
That could take some time. VW seems confident they'd done a lot of testing on the engine. It won't stop me buying one / some.
The more I look at the t7 the more I love my t5.
Doesn’t matter how many times you say different! It’s a Ford transit, so glad I got a T6.1, can’t understand Vw all T6 hold their value and command a stupid price for a van, and they stop making them , btw I also have a transit and they’re ok 🤷🏼♂️

We actually said ourselves, the Transporter sounds different to our new Transit custom. The Transporter actually sounds like a Golf 😂
Great video gents. Very informative. Thanks
Thank you. It actually took a lot of work to cover and edit all this over 2 days.
Fundamentally the engine diesel engine won’t be different. The only improvements i envisage are the to the cambelt itself or the dpf. There has been an improvement to the current belt already and a lot of models from 2018 were recalled. Ford also changed the service schedule from 10yr / 120k to 6yr /100k. It will be interesting to ask what the VW recommend as the service schedule. This should be a tell tale sign if things have changed. Other questions should be - does the T7 have an oil life indicator? It’s recommended that you should have an oil change when it reaches 20% . The oil life gauge is a smart device that accounts length / frequency of journey.
Thanks for your comment. Wish I'd had known this before, I'd love to have grilled them on that. That's very interesting information. We'll try and follow up on this.
I still remember when everyone hated anything but air cooled. I had a t4 diesel at the time it was very much hated 😂
We get this every time 😂
any new security features to help tradesman keep their tools safe ? Or can it be opened like a can of beans again....
A question we didn't ask I'm afraid, I am glad the VW has different locks to the Ford though.
Great question. Theft from vans will never cease, so you would hope this was part of the design brief. That said I was on the M25 car park tonight and I saw a brand new transit with a big tear in the sliding door next to the lock, clearly a break in, so fear not.
I grew to love the t6.1, even the Id buzz after thqs one. But not sure about this one. Makes me love my t5.1 even more 🤣
Wait until we get our hands on one. £5 says we can make you love this too 😉
The T4 is the daddy of the transporter 💪🏻
Great video for providing the audience with the information on this new collaboration with Ford and the cross overs between the product. I do however think this will be the end of the following that VW have had with the proper Transporter T series. I get the fact that times need to move on and the chassis is 22 years old etc but it works (if it’s not broke don’t fix it). People love the T5-T6.1 even if it is just a facelift between the years and the odd change here and there, a proper built vehicle by Volkswagen themselves is what people want to pay the premium for. The transit will be the option for anyone wanting to go this route now unfortunately.
Having owned a new Transit and seen the new Transporter, I'd buy the Transporter and not just for the badge. They are finished better and better equipped. There does seem to be a difference in finish coming off the 2 different production lines. Yes they are now made in Turkey for affordability, but VW are controlling the production. I'd personal rather a Turkish built Transporter than a German built vehicle at a considerable premium.
Reminds me of when the Ford Sierra was launched in the 80’s - jelly mould car and now we have the jelly mould van.
The upside for Transporter HQ is there’s huge opportunity to put some cool into the van and give it some T6.x attitude differentiating it significantly from the Transit version.
Of course they’ve grown on you ….. you’re a businessman who’s going to be selling upgraded parts for the new Transforder 😉👍🏼

I suspect the reason neither VW nor ford will confirm or even acknowledge the wet belt issue is to prevent any aort of litigation
VW can't legally talk about any previous issues their 'partners' have had. Ford don't want to tell us as it would be admitting they had an issue with the previous custom. They all look very uncomfortable when we're giving them a grilling 😂
Bang on!! The potential cost in law suit payouts is enormous and that's why they are all keeping quiet...........................
The Vw van range has got a lot more confusing. What to eventually replace the ageing T5 day van with?
ID Buzz -cool but very expensive and all electric so for now too limited in range /insufficient charging infrastructure. No, or only in the much longer term..
The Multivan; as a hybrid or diesel. It's a bit nerdy looking and needs converting right -but best proper new VW bus beyond the T6s.
This, the VW Transit underdog -it's slightly better looking than the transit -but heart says not different enough has lowest 'snob' appeal and the dashboard is too Ford. Unless it proves a dynamic reliable gem and the wet belt is replaced... no.
Or a newer younger VW T6 and keep it deep into it's old age -most likely!
There is so much focus on electric at this show. Everyone, even the lorry companies are 90% EV on their stands. 50% of the Transporters on display were electric too plus the ID-Buzz and hybrid California. If the electric T7 / New Transporter was available sooner, that's what I'd order.
@@THQAutomotive I admit I'm probably a luddite with my clinging to the T5/T6. If I drove one of VW's newer offerings I might be more of a convert. In the real World our vehicle purchase decisions mainly come down to price (purchase & running costs), reasonable 'liveability' (reliability and function) and a level of subjective style. On those grounds maybe the T7 / New Transporter may fair well enough to convince me. On your electric focus point; it will be interesting to see how much of an issue the range /recharging infrastructure is. I'm a sceptic about that improving much over the next decade -but I hope I'm proven wrong. It depends on one's real world use of the vehicle and home charging situation..
I hope the wet belt engine lasts longer than a Turkish hair transplant!

VW have killed one of the best commercial vehicles ever produced.
Thanks for the video, guys. Very informative. I've been a volkswagen technician for 21 years now and a loyal vw Transporter van owner for the last 12 years, currently driving a 6.1.
I get why volkswagen has had to do this now, and sooner or later, if you want to change your current transporter for a new one, what other choice are you really going to have. The part that annoys me is why volkswagen has allowed it to come to this. They've allowed there market share of the commercial vans to gradually decline while also not preparing for for a situation like this where possible they could of moved factory to a different location to reduced cost as ford have done. There are also thousands of workers now losing their jobs in the factory in Germany because of this. I accept this is the future, for now, and im sure I'll come around to buying a t7, but it is without doubt the end of an era for the vw community.
Very interesting view from someone that works for VW. Thank you for your comments.

@@THQAutomotive Who knows! Probably a Merc! Everything else is Stellantis Group! Thankfully, having come off the tools, I don't really need a commercial vehicle much now!
I have no issue with them sharing certain things with Ford. No vehicle is perfect! The engine however, I personally believe is signing their own death warrant.
@@mattt3302time will tell, but VW do seem very confident in their testing. It's just not possible they'd let Ford us an engine with an issue that wasn't resolved.... right? 😁
@@THQAutomotive Indeed it will. However, I fear it’s the same engine and knowing Ford, will probably still fail as before because the wet belt is a monumentally stupid design - which Ford know!
I hope I am wrong but the Fact Ford won’t hold their hands up and admit the issues with the wet belt engines as well as the reluctance about commenting on the huge elephant in the room, I feel tells you all you need to know.
Sadly, I fear VW won’t survive as a company for too much longer. Shite EV models that clearly aren’t selling won’t be helping them financially and I feel the company is losing its way, which saddens me.
I’ve owned 10+ VW cars and commercials over the years but have gone over to Lexus because their vehicles are reliable, dealer service is unrivalled with good warranties. I’ve found VW dealers of late have no interest in customers and certainly not issues. Toyota & Lexus, know how to build reliable cars and look after thier customers.
I loved my T5, T5.1 (best in my opinion) T6 and T6.1. I just hope the new VW Transit lives up to what people expect from VW as a brand.

Funny😂
That 'Kombi' was a DCiV with fixed bench and integral bulkhead 😮
I’ve got a 72 ford transit with a wet belt, it’s done 100k miles with no problems, apparently the belt edges where when new and bits block the oil pick up, but the first couple of services sort this out by oil and filter changes.

Interesting on the Mazda thing, u didn't know that. I think it being a Mazda is a good thing right? A wet belt isn't an issue, if they know what's causing them to break and they know how to stop it. Which it appears they have 🤞

Personally I’d be interested in the BEV if it just had a little more battery capacity; 68 kWh just seems undersized even compared to the IDBuzz at 77. I appreciate a larger battery has an impact on carrying capacity, but some of us need more volume and are less concerned about mass.
Yes i agree. I think long term I'll get the BEV (diesel first as we need an early one for development) I would have liked to have seen at least buzz sized batteries though.
Collaborating has worked well for stellantis - just glad I bought my ID buzz it’s so much better looking
I've just ordered a Buzz GTX 😍
The new transit is lovely, I prefer my T6.1 though having driven the Ford. I won’t be buying another VW now. I’ll probably head to Mercedes in a few years. I’ve got some transits at work and a couple have had new engines under warranty when the wet belt failed so let’s see. Main issue for me is it isn’t a VW, I won’t lose sleep and I’m sure VW won’t when I don’t buy one 🤣
One reason I didn't go for a transist was due to the wet belt....... Yeah i'm sticking with my T6. Good video however :)
I'm interested though, where do you go next, when it's time to say goodbye to the T6?
Great vid…. Loved the tone of part one of this story.. in this video your tone seems more excusing vw trying to convince us that it’s okay to stay with vw…. I think the van looks nice and every business has to diversify to survive… it’s working for Toyota/citroen/peugot…. Thanks for the details… quite helpful-ish
Thank you. I'm glad you found the video interesting. That's our goal when making these video.
Don’t forget the whole other part of the collaboration which is that VW want to massively increase their presence in US commercial vehicle sector where Ford currently own the market with the F series
@@seccles09 we asked VW if this platform would be going to the US and they said no.
I understand the cost reasoning but i dont get it. The T5 through T6.1 has been a constant evolution rather than a re-engineering, so a lot if the cost must jave been absorbed over years and years. Also, looking at sales figures doesnt add up either, driving through germany, almost every van was a transporter and i reckon thats a larger total market than the UK. If they had used VW running gear i suspect there wouldnt be an uproar about it. What i also find odd is that surely they sell more transporters than amaroks, yet they managed to make a larger differentiation between that and the ranger
I suspect the August figures would be lower on Transporters due to them being discounted. Amarok will be higher as they are new ish to market and had a lot of pre orders.
You do see a lot of Transporters around Germany yes. The custom far out sells all the others though.
The fact is the production costs / cost of living / wages are so high in Germany. If the panel van was made there, the price of the Transporter would need to be way more than any of us would want to spend.
Hope they’ve (VW&Ford) have addressed the door security issues.
Having driven Transporters all my working life (carpenter) seriously thinking of moving away from vans because of the theft issues related with them…
VW and Ford seem to have very different lock placement across the models. Frustrating though as why should we have to. Thieving scum bags 😔
I think I prefer the look of the transit and I’m a T5 owner
Really! Each to their own. Having seen both in person, I much prefer the VW. Plus the interior look and feel and the infotainment system is much nicer. The VW running software, steering and suspension will no doubt to better too.
That’s a lot of change to digest easily
A lot of changes for sure. I guess we've had more time to process it than others. I'm at peace with it now. I see VW had no option. They've done the best they can and picked the right partner in my opinion.
Ford engines? Wet belt?
It's all covered in the video if you watch it.
VW mechanics are petrified.
@@Phil00303 Is this fact or just an assumption? I'd be very surprised if VW mechanics even know about it yet. I spoke to a VW dealer earlier and they said I know more than they do?
@THQAutomotive I've spoken with a main dealer and a separate specialist. The main dealer team are not looking forward to transits. The authorised dealer said up until now they would not touch transits, so they both seemed uneasy about the prospect of becoming a Ford service agent. The word is out.
Got a 6.1 combi 204 bhp and boy does it motor on long European trips - it is so good. Cant see why VW did not elvolve again with a proper t7 as others say they make enough on them. I'm getting the new transit combi next week, but Doubt ill sell the 6.1. certainly the Amarok has done well out of the new Ranger so good luck to VW.
@@kevb8544 we have T6.1 204 too. Great bit of kit. I'd like the BEV next if they came out soon. I'll go with the diesel to start with.
Hold dearly onto your t5s and t6s friends (even tho there’re an endless $$$ pit) lol
Charge port on the front bumper... Instant wright off in a smash then! 😂😂😂
I quite like them 👍🏻 just the engine that’s throwing me off just now because they are very vague on there answers which is a bit concerning for now 👍🏻
VW are vague because they will be contractual bound not to comment on Fords pervious issues. They do seem very confident in their testing though.
@@THQAutomotive totally understandable, I won’t buy one until they have been out for a year so the wee bugs can be fixed 👍🏻 maybe t7.1 will be more refined, anytime a whole new model comes out they always have teething issues
@@kevinkvs9746 very true.
@@kevinkvs9746 very true.
I love the look of the New Transporter that will no doubt be known as the “T7” by most people and I’m sure people will know exactly what vehicle is being referred to. Interior of the cab looks pretty good too.
I totally understand why manufacturers collaborate on vehicles in this way and each will put their own stamp on the styling and mechanics. I’m not as comfortable with them being built in their chosen country but Im sure both Ford and VW will ensure their build qualities are upheld.
Only time will tell about reliability especially for the engines. We hear a lot of horror stories about the “wet belt” engines and indeed they do seem terrible from what I have seen and heard. Problem with that is I have not heard anything of the positives of that type of engine, is that because there isn’t or is it simply they work fine and people don’t have anything to say about them. Like all engines they will need correct servicing, so have the broken engines been serviced correctly?
Unfortunately it will be some time before I replace my T6 as Im enjoying the travelling and camping in it not to mention costs of replacement. The T6 isn’t without it’s negatives I’m sure.
Great look around the new vans, thanks.
Transporter conversion specialists trying to sell ford transits as the true VW transporter range is discontinued is a weird sensation... I'm not buying it. Transit HQ will survive no doubt though and best of luck hehe
I might have to register Transit HQ too 😉😂
Still rolling with the T4 these have zero character
They have loads of toys though. I do like gadgets and comfort 😝
Im trying to figure out the styling, it seems to have a soft Japanese robot style front look to it. I love the more aggresive 6.1 look, so cant wait to see what you guys do with it
I can't wait to get styling it. We have some ideas 😉
As an owner of both a 2013 T5 and a 2019 transit custom when you come to change the timing belt on them it costs far more in time and cost to do the ford wet belt
Yes I've heard this. I don't suppose you remember the comparison and intervals?
Can't remember the mileage intervals but both belts had been on for 5 years and covered 50k both replaced with genuine kits from the respective manufacturer and fitted by my local MOT garage and the ford was £417 more expensive
Sorry...no go...last T6...last bulli
Sorry I don't understand?
Yes it is a Ford Transit, just like the new VW Amarok is a Ford Ranger
The Amarok and Ranger drive very differently though. The Amarok gets a lot better reviews.
@@THQAutomotive really, I've never driven a Ranger so can't compare.
The engine, gearbox, drive train, suspension etc is all Ford and they come out of the same factory, so I would assume they drive the same
@@franktatham5538 no, they have VW software and suspension.
@@THQAutomotive I get the software as needs to have VW on dash and radio
I will have to look at the suspension and the work book from the launch training
@@franktatham5538 We knew it was different suspension before they even launch the T7. We working closely with Eibach and they told us they were working with VW on the new Transporter, but had nothing to do with the Custom.
Thanks so much for this guys, lots of really useful info.
I don’t really mind about the looks - especially because there are far too many clever folks like yourselves who will get to work on it in no time and it will look 👌🏽 👌🏽 👌🏽
It really is the fact they’ve gone with Ford innards that has made me feel so sad about it tbh: the Wet Belt issue is terrifying but even the thought of a Ford gearbox over the VW DSG… 😢
Can you shed any light on the chat about this actually just being a stopgap and VW will go back to a solo operation for the next “T8”? (Maybe that’s why they made that fuss about calling this the “New Transporter” 🤷🏻♀️)
One thing I’m confused about now though, if the Multivan that’s already available is in fact the new Caravelle for our market - is it a Ford deep down too? If so why did it come out when it did & not with these, and if not, well, same Q really! lol.
Unless the price was to increase, I can't see how VW could ever produce a Transporter themselves in Germany. I expect this partnership to continue. Maybe VW will have more influence on the next version? Yes I was disappointed about the Ford auto over the VW DSG. We'll see though. It's VW software not Ford on the engine and gearbox we believe. Hopefully that make it as good as the DSG 🤞
@@LizzyFerretOfficial The T7 Multivan is a thoroughbred VW built on their MQB platform. THQ predicted that the Multivan may appear in commercial van form at some point…it’d certainly be interesting if that were the case, I wonder if VW fanboys (myself included 😆) would sacrifice size for a true Volkswagen? 🤔
@@jogshuttle2676ohhh good info 👌🏽 I need an underfloor cassette lift and room to get from off my wheelchair and onto the drivers seat so if it’s massively smaller than the T5.1 that makes my life so much better than I’d struggle.
However.
It’s still not a Ford. So. There’s that 🙈
Did you see the wiring loom wandering down to back, poor, just poor.
I believe that's for the rear view camera mirror. I agree it could be better hidden, as could the wiring looms in the roof.
Really interesting video, thank you 👍🏼
I embrace change and never had a problem with what VW did with the styling changes on the Transporter but WTF are VW doing with that grill? It looks like an old Peugeot or Vauxhall Nova 🤢 it looks cheap. The Caravelle looks a bit better.
I think if you guys can bring out a new front grill that stops it looking like a burns victim would be a a huge improvement!
As for the wet belt thing it clearly still uses one 🫣 all be it modified. If it didn’t they would be shouting from the rooftops about it!
We can make them look sexy, don't you worry 😉 A wet belt isn't an issue if they know why they break and how to stop it. VW seem confident in their testing 🤞
The T7 looks very nice but they need to make them a bit wider to accommodate the possibility of sleeping across the van.
For wider you need a Crafter. The Transporter is their smaller platform
@@THQAutomotive Yes I know about the crafter but still think If the T7 was that bit wider It would become more popular. I have a T5 and at my age It will see me out.
Are the BEV transporters using LFP batteries ?
I didn't ask sorry. We're done at the show now and flying home today 🫤
Thing is with the name that VW is saying it's called The New Transporter and it won't be called a T7, it needs to be the T7, because in a couple of years time it's not going to be a New Transporter.
I agree 🤷🏻♂️
The fact there not bragging about a new engine and trying there best not to answer a simple question with facts to back it up tells u everything u need to know ………it’s the same garbage wet belt engine!!!!!!
@@garyhalsall4041 lots of companies use wet belts. VW can't comment on Ford previous issue. Ford don't want to talk about it as it then admits they previously had a problem
@@THQAutomotive yep exactly instead of just owning up to it and reassuring the customer these issues have been addressed they will just avoid the subject altogether, I’d stay well away from it it’s garbage, interior is nice tho but exterior just screams transit especially that rear quarter panel 🤦♂️, long live the T6
I actually quite like the front end think it would lend well to a swamper build, but we all have choices and tastes better that way, bland world if we didn’t.
Couldn't agree more. That's the beauty of those things. We can make them so personally.
I think I want one.......
I think you're right 😝
I like how persistent you are. I also feel sorry for the VW & Ford guys, but I want an answer DAMN it. :)
They hate me by now. After 2 days of pushing for answer, they walk the other way, or start taking to someone else on purpose when they see us walking towards them 😂
The C-Pillar is very “Ford”, but otherwise it does look like next generation Transporter to me. I’m really looking forward to seeing what these will look like with the usual modifications (wheels, suspension, etc).
Watching with interest cause when my T6 needs replacing, it has to be another Kombi. After having a “van” I just can’t go back to a car. My T6 Kombi literally does everything I ask of it.
How does anyone live without a van in their lives? I'd be totally lost 😂
What’s about the small overlap crash test?
What is this?
I really do hope it works out for VW, we need to be able to keep buying Transporters. I’ve got a converted T5.1 and changed my T6 work van for the new transit a few months ago. To be honest it’s a nice van to drive but it’s got a lot of early production vehicle niggles- we got 2 and now have a dedicated WhatsApp group for all the faults that it reports on the dashboard 😅. With a bit of luck VW have taken their time and ironed out the gremlins, I predict the Transit will be in a scrapyard before the T5.1 it’s just not tough enough.
Yeah I hope VW have taken this time to iron out the Ford early release issues. Our new custom has had several product recalls already. I believe the Transporter and VW software though.
Ford engines and transmissions with production in turkey ? Promising :D
Did you watch the video? Produced on a VW dedicated production line, managed by VW. The good news is, being produced in Turkey means the end user (you and I) aren't paying Germany manufacturing costs in our vehicles.
Great video !!!! I'm not really too concerned about the Ford , Vw collaboration as i can't afford a brand new van . I only had enough money for a 20 year old Transporter .
However i do think the T5.1 front end looks better than the original T5 one 🤭😉😅
Wash your mouth out!! T5 pre-facelift all the way! 😮😝🤣

Just had a quick Google, and I don't see it? 🤔

Remember the ID Buzz is a microbus, the T1 Splitty.
The Multivan has been shown as the T7.
Let’s not forget the Multivan has existed in other countries for many years, which was our Caravelle.
Our Shuttle in the UK has been known as Caravelle in other countries for many years.
The PanAmericana has been a cult vehicle in other countries, but never came here. Is it coming here now?
It’s is confusing for people and understandable that people can get them mixed up..
Shame I couldn’t be there to see it in the flesh.
I'm confused and I work with these all day everyday. Big fan of the Pan Americana though. It seems the UK will also get a Sportline.
@@THQAutomotive I talk majority Transporters on my channel and spoke about how confusing it all was a year or so ago.
If they stuck with the same names in all regions it must be easier.
However, they blurred the lines further when they said the T7 Bulli family and then stated to dealers it’s the “New Transporter” and won’t be the T7. Yet they call it the 7th gen.
Crazy.
@@StaycationLifestyle time will tell. We were told the multivan was called a T7 then told it was just called a multivan. When we ordered parts for ours, the invoices from TPS and VW part numbers referred to them as T7. Then at the California launch, we were told it was on the T7 multivan platform.
Then with the New Transporter, the website says T7, but VW then contact us and tell us they aren't using T7 and it's just called the New Transporter 🤷🏻♂️

The Ford or VW?
Not for me just looks like white goods bland and boring. I'll just keep my T6.1 .
What next after that though? Where do you go? I'm interested to know.
7:50 rather use door mirrors than have the blob stuck on the back for rearview.
My guess this is an option extra
Are they charging more for the vw than the ford?
He explains that in the vid. It’s like the Ranger vs the Amarok: no direct comparison when it comes to spec’ing each up but the VW wasn’t madly more expensive than the Ford in that instance, it just had more spec. So it’s likely this will be the same.
Yes as Lizzy says, we do cover this in the video.
Can't see how they can really, plus if the "new" engine is suddenly cured, they would be shouting that fact from the rooftops, not being tight-lipped, I would also expect some changes to vw's all component warranty, when it comes to the wet belt...
Yes all wetbelt engines are doomed, nothing wrong with wet chains.
Never will i buy a car woth a wetbelt no matter what BS test ford have said they’ve done.
Wet belts, also known as "wet cambelts," are integral components found in modern vehicle engines, responsible for synchronising the top and bottom components of the engine. One such innovation is the wet belt system, utilised by major automakers like PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroën, and recently, Vauxhall/Opel) and Ford. These systems were designed to reduce friction and wear, improve durability, and decrease noise compared to traditional timing chains and dry belts..... stole that from Google btw 😊
Lots of vehicles use wet belts with no issues.
Ooooh I do like the fold away tow bar, can this be retro fitted to a T5.1 that I won’t be upgrading to the Ford 😢
No it won't. Yeah I really like that too.
