The authors of these stories never seem to understand the limit of what the human body can go through, and because of that they always become too ridiculous to take seriously, good vid.
There is an interesting plot concept here, it's just really, REALLY, buried under a LOT of book. Namely the idea of luck helping the lead and maybe them being charmed in some way, IE. the dice NEVER rolling low. A smart story would use that as a bit of a hook and use that to build into a story. Like maybe the dice are loaded and the killer wants to make sure they never hurt the guy directly for some reason. Or maybe luck ALWAYS sides with the main character and they are somehow always blessed, but do not realize this until this moment. I just think you could take the idea of endless luck being actually a bad thing into an interesting direction. The book clearly never does that, which is sad. It really does feel like a very thin read. PS. I remember it being suggested a while back that a discord could be made for this channel. Would still love to see that.
i hope one of these disturbing books explores the depths of these upsetting topics instead of just showing them off bluntly. i think most authors tend to forgot that these topics are not talked about bluntly because its taboo or not "PC", but because in general it just isnt a very good or engaging way to go about it. its clear they WANT to show some deeper meaning and philosophy behind it, but if you dont go any deeper than a shallow tidepool of blood and guts, the more nuanced meanings get drowned out as well. i dont remember what it was called for the life of me, but there was this one book that was similar in topics as the rest of these disturbing books, with SA, murder, and such. But it put you in the perspective OF the abused, of the person who has been so far manipulated to a point where even you as a reader do not identify anything wrong with the relationship. As all of the narration simply dismisses everything, and makes you think the abuser is just a side character who's important to the protag. It leads you along with this red herring story line, before finally revealing the abusers true colors in a horrific murder scene, where all the subtle hints and notes throughout the book make sense. It had similar blood and guts to these 'disturbing' books but left me feeling actually DISTURBED and horrified, while also feeling proper emotions and wanting to re-read the book again to pick up all the hints.
@@mainmorpho I CANNNTT I CANNNTT. the last like, "disturbing" book (series) that i read that had a lot of the really brutal parts was Oyasumi PunPun, so my mind is filled with that instead of the other one :/
I read this book a while back it was actually my first “disturbing” horror novel come to find out it’s a series where the author essentially exploits the main characters trauma and makes him into a Dexter character. It was a strange ride to say the least.
This book was very tame compared to other Extreme Horror novels, too bad it has nothing beyond the violence and some Elementary School-level pondering about luck and fate. If the author focused more on developming the characters and on their deteriorating mental state (and if learned a little more about anatomy so the mutilation didn't became so ridiculous) it could have been a decent book.
How many horror scenarios could be avoided by jumping the single assailant? At least try it, victims! I enjoyed this book a lot, but I think the second girl's suffering pushed it over the line as far as how hopeless the story needed to feel. It's a thin line between anguish and melodrama.
I honestly really enjoyed this book, but I can definitely recognize its shortcomings. One thing I will note is that I saw the open-endedness of the dice and the luck as reflective of Roger’s view of it. He doesn’t understand why, and that is something that he has to live with, so it’s fittingly something that the audience has to sit with. Now, do I think the theme could’ve been executed better? Absolutely. And everyone is entitled to their own interpretation. That’s just mine.
I honestly think the reason Roger didn't get picked during the dice rolls was because this is not a stand-alone book. Yep, there are two other books where Roger is the main character and the next book takes place 10 years after the events of this and Roger is now a painter living in California and that's all I know because I'm not touching those other two books with a ten foot pole.
Ayo this book was actually in my own backlog after watching an iceberg video. Thank you for promptly reading it in my stead so I didn’t have to suffer. Since you’re already on it, why not read its sequel Born To Bleed? Surely it’ll be better than it’s predecessor
Man! I decided for whatever reason last year to read all three of the books in this series and let me just say. This one is a literary masterpiece compaired to the next too. Great video as always!
great video as always! I guess the more "extreme horror" stuff I read the more I realize it's just not a genre for me. the very few books I liked from this style I liked *despite* them being extreme horror and because they were doing something *different* to the usual sensibility of the genre. also yeah most of them are very obviously written for a specific type of person and as a certified wok left queer lesbo™ I'm not that kind of person most of the time ig... to anyone reading this I would rather recommend getting into House of Leaves or something, that's gonna keep you occupied for a long time and productively disturbed on a much more interesting level without just being unnecessarily nasty (even though one of the main characters is still pretty insufferable as a person imo)
The final confrontation and ending kinda ruined the whole vibe. Him getting so lucky with the dog collar and also that the captor doesn’t catch him and instead goes outside with his dog had me rolling my eyes so hard.
Morpho upload during dinner time once again. This time it’s burger and fry (one singular fry cause I ate while cooking). Very good, I am entertained and levitating
Honestly half the fun of these videos is seeing what tv characters you use for the book characters. This story sounded boring as hell but it's a little funny imagining Beavis and Butthead doing their dumb laugh at the horrors. How do you decide what characters you're going to use? Do you go off how similar they are to the book characters or is it whatever happens to pop up in your head first?
I can't wait for you to read Exquisite Corpse! This and Fluids are my favorite horror books, but they were also the worst to read:,D but the prose in Exquisite Corpse is oddly gentle, beautiful and absolutely breathtaking. By the way, have you ever heard of Earthlings? It's not extreme horror but it's certainly in the same vibe, and is a great book with a lot to say... And some deeply uncomfortable subject matter
idk how many channels I'm subscribed to at this point, but morpho is one that I always gotta check out the moment I see an upload in my inbox. when you mentioned that the sister character doesn't have any development whatsoever, I just knew that she was going to be a victim of the splatterpunk "generic over the top psychopath of he week". I think I'd probably be fine with this one if more of the book explored the lives of the kids and made it seem more like an exploration of how a slice of life narrative can be derailed by something horrible.
I know you probably get like thousands of comments suggesting books and your tbr list is probably a mile long, but I highly suggest Motel Styx by Jonathan Butcher. It takes place in an alternate world where Necrophilia has been legalized and follows a man going to a necro brothel in order to find his wives body. It's a great book imho.
Crazy! I'm 12 chapters into this very book right now. I was told that it was like the novel I'd just finished (Survivor by J.F. Gonzales - not great, btw) but "done right". I'm gonna save this video for after I finish and edit this comment with my thoughts. In the meantime, take care. Muah. Love your videos. Edit, also spoilers: Alright, I'm back. Disappointed, but it was better than Survivor by miles. Skinny Man was so cartoonishly edgy it took me out of the plot. My mind's eye couldn't help but imagine him as a cross between Miner 49er and Sonic.exe. The torture for the most part, was more boring or annoying than disturbing. I feel like there was no point in keeping the Mystery Woman alive once she took an axe to the head beyond allowing the author to throw in a lot of goofy violence without hurting the main characters. Then a solid third of the book was just Tooth torture porn. It tracks, since Tooth had mad death flags since page 1. Also, I couldn't help but feel like Roger didn't care all that much about Jamie? He claims that his sister's kidnapping and torture gave him "urgency", but he has to remember her dying body in the basement once the cops show up. I know he's a terrified nerd but that's his little sister, dog. She could have been any other character and the plot wouldn't have changed at all. I didn't hate this book, since it's one of the less-bad ex-horrors I've read so far. It is pretty boring though. I actually found myself somewhat endeared to Roger and Tooth. They feel like a couple of dudes I grew up with. Not, like, friends of mine or anything but dudes from around town. They felt like characters and believable friends, right down to being knuckleheaded pervs. Still, it's crazy how many death flags Tooth had. That Red Sox hat may as well have "hardheaded bestie who's gonna die to give the nebbish friend can get revenge" embroidered on the bill. This book's also the first part of a trilogy, which intrigues and worries me since ex-horrors are usually one and dones. I did clocked that the Skinny Man wasn't working "alone" as soon as he mentioned "them", so I have an idea of what the rest of the saga's might be about. Once again, ex-horror has yet to wow me. Your review was great though. I'll try to look around the closet for my nurse costume, but if I can't find it - Get well soon
Thanks for making these videos because these disturbing books would get hyped up and once I read them I'm just mad at how boring they were! You express most of my reaction to these books! 😭🙏
Highly HIGHLY recommend reading Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite. It’s splatterpunk/extreme horror but it’s BEAUTIFULLY written and quite deep. Essentially two horrible serial killers find each other and fall in love. I’d love to hear what you think of it!
I found it pretty ridiculous. It's basically irl serial killer fanfic based on a teenager's real life murder. The protagonist is also pretentious and annoying, like if H.H. were a slasher villain.
Thank you for the video! This book was so predictable & bad. The gratuitous gore could've been more exciting if there was a supernatural element behind it. "The Summer I Died" feels like an unearned title considering Roger has the biggest plot armor known to man. But what if the twist was that the dice landed on him early on and he died from the villain chopping off his leg or something. But then, the next chapter begins with him very much alive and discovering that he is unable to stay dead, because he has some unique power that makes him immortal? When the killer sees that Roger resurrected, he'll really wail on the kid along with his friend & sister, and it can turn into Roger sacrificing his body to prevent his loved ones from getting hurt any further. The ending could still have them die, and Roger escape, but the philosophical monologue could hit harder with Roger asking why God chose him to have this power and yet not having it be enough to save the others? I know there are sequels to this book, so if this was the route the author took, I could very much see this idea expanding on how he was immortal, etc. I got this idea as I read the scene where the random lady woke up after getting an axe to her head. I assumed there'd be a surprise where the villain transformed his victims to withstand extreme pain so he could use their bodies as much as he wants. But no, that woman just had a high- and unrealistic- pain tolerance. Keep up the good work! 💕

yes your sense of humor is great but so are your horror takes. imo so much horror (movies and the books you review) are boring because they don't have any depth in the writing. and are very predictable and tropey. perhaps they think if they put enough blood and screaming in there then it will suddenly become a good story lol
