What YouTubers Didn't Tell You about the Evergreen Miner

  • In this video I review the Evergreen Miner, a HDD miner which mines the cryptocurrency CHIA. It appears Evergreen sent free miners to many of your favorite UA-camrs several months ago and in exchange Evergreen received glowing review videos about how profitable, efficient, and low power these miners are. Convincing unsuspecting and/or naive viewers to purchase these miners with their affiliate codes. In this video I break down the true profitability of these devices and make the case why you will never recover your money if you purchase one of these devices, not even close.
    I am not trying to make enemies with this video, so I did not call out any UA-camr specifically. But some of the Evergreen review videos are downright dishonest. Do better.

      I purchased the unit a couple months ago; it took about 12 weeks to arrive. Once I got the unit, I was unable to power the device because of a damage power connector on the hard drive. I emailed the Evergreen and was told to fill out an RMA form. I have done this and now no one will reply back. I have sent multiple emails with no response. My advice is to invest your money into a different miner.

    I have one 16TB Evergreen miner. They were great helping me set it up. I happened to move during the migration to Space Farmers and when I got settled, couldn’t get it to migrate. Again, customer service was great until I got ghosted. I tore the thing apart and am going to download my own farming software to the Crapberry Pi and convert my gaming PC to a harvester. I’ll be creating my own plots from here on but this project is on the shelf until I get other projects running on their own.

    Do your analysis at 7 cents per KWH.
    Then do it at 3.
    It's NOT common for people in average-or-higher electric rate areas to even TRY to mine any cryptocurrency.
    But BOTH of those rates I mentioned can be achieved within the US - 7 is fairly common in many areas with lots of hydropower, 3 is a "best case" rate I could achieve a bit LOWER than by moving one county over from where I'm at now (though that would be with a senior discount, most folks would be more like 3.4 or so) into the county that has the lowest electric rates in the USA.

    I built my own PC to mine CHIA and it was a nightmare...to be effective you needed a high end CPU, loads of RAM, you needed M.2 SSDs and loads of external hard drives. It took AGES to plot and it was riddled with problems. I'm tech savvy but could not get my 8 externals all plotted...I eventually had 3 by the time I gave up. I was also there right at the start (aproximately) so take it with a grain of salt. However...I now have a kick ass PC and had sold my externals...the evergreen miner is just a low powered PC...hopefully optimized for plotting but I cant see how they would cram all that power into the "hub"...BUT you can probably resell the "expansion pack" which are just external hard drives covered in their green sleeves

    Chia is a super nice project! They focus on B2B segment. They plan to create reversible transactions. They had a found round, however they did not give the tokens to the investors, as they are waiting for regulation rules. So it will pass regulation for sure, at least, it is after bitcoin on the probability to pass regulation without any problems. Now big whales accumulate I think.

    • @XxViper06xX
      @XxViper06xX Рік тому +1

      Well seeing as compressed plots isnt officially supported yet(CPU and GPU compression/farming are in the works) i would assume Evergreen is still only using uncompressed plots so this means 166 plots on a 18TB drive. While I'm not advocating for Evergreens miners as the best solution, they are an easy way to get your foot in the door of a huge up and comer in blockchain tech. And correction in the last 2 months the price has gone up. What you may be meaning is that the network size has increased therefore dropping earnings, and while this could be the case, the network size has not increased so significantly that earnings is less than before. My suggestion would be to do better research and look at the well know and big names backing/developing Chia and of course the advanced tech they are bringing to the table.

  • @bricefleckenstein9666
    @bricefleckenstein9666 9 місяців тому

    The profitability is small, even with low electric costs - but that's true with ANY cryptocoin mining option today.
    The NORM is many hundreds to a couple THOUSAND days to make back an investment in new crypto gear.
    You did bring up the point that it can be cheaper to "roll your own" - but if you're using NEW drives (which almost nobody recommends) the costs aren't much better than that Evergreen Kit Pro 10-drive kit on a per-terabyte basis.
    But Evergreen can't offer a warrenty on a system with USED drives in it.
    Also, the plotting process DOES eat quite a bit of time - even if you shell out enough for a used SERVER that you can do GPU plotting entirely in RAM with (which is looking at an absolute minimum of 384 GB of ram for so you can buffer the output for max plotting speeds) that can manage to plot *1 drive* (or 2 if you insist on using SMALL drives like 6GB or 8GB) in a full day.

    I think of these devices almost as the crypto version of a stock call option, where there's little current value but larger potential returns if the price were to spike. Having said that, it's a much safer play for most people to just buy the token if they believe in chia.

    Good analysis. However, a halving is supposed to decrease supply which in turn increases demand for a single Chia. That being said, using a solid consistent price point for chia each halving creates a not true to life modle. I'd like another video giving some kind of percentage increase to chia coin price each halving to replicate real world events. :)

    I have been with Chia since the beginning, for full disclosure I do NOT use evergreen. The major selling point is the cost savings of a Plotter and the time savings, you really need to add that into your calculations as both the hardware for the plotter and time to plot savings needs to be added into your calculations. The evergreen miners can save someone new to Chia @ $1,000 USD for hardware, plus weeks or even months (depending on how many Tib or PiB you purchase) You would also need to add the power savings from not having to plot into your calculations. Once again, I am not paid by, related to in anyway or even use Evergreen, I just wanted to point out these missing details in your calculations.

    Thanks. I am running a evergreen farm. I hear you but it's highly speculative. I don't do these kinds of projects with any idea of getting rich quickly. I have a 5-year plan and so I have about 3.5 years before I'm looking at where these sits. My first goal is make $1.00 per day. Then, more, but my pension is less by a dollar a day now than last year. Between mining and staking, I'm making close to a buck a day. So, I just HODL my stuff. I have sold some things for 2x in the past year or so. Fantom, Shib, Helium but I held too long, didn't make as much as I could have. It's fun and keeps the old mind going:) IF it goes up even to $230/coin, it will be nice. THANKS

      Yes it would be profitable if you have free electricity. But if you have free electric, you should be running one of the big ASICS.
      Profitability is all over the place at the moment, not many miners are consistently profitable. Check out DIMO, I did a video on it last month, super easy to earn, low cost to get in, and very profitable.

    First off plotting/farming on your own hardware is not hard at all, it only requires you to install the Chia client and in a few clicks you are plotting/farming your own drives. You know what they say about assuming(you do alot of this in your video) but i'm going to assume that most people that are here for "News" related to cyrpto mining probably have more than capable hardware to plot at a decent pace. Not to mention GPU plotting/farming is just around the corner, this will more significantly reduce the time to plot drives. While I understand your video was meant to correct the "misconception" that the Evergreen miners specifically are as profitable as some of the recent UA-camrs would have you believe, the video surely comes off as FUDing Chia in general. Sure these guys either got those miners for free or very cheap and thats between them and Evergreen. How they make their money is their business. The Evergreen miners are meant to be a quick and easy, not necessarily the cheapest or most profitable way to get into Chia farming. I would encourage you and your followers to look more into Chia, its developers and team, and the awesome technology they are brining into the world of crypto and blockchain and then make a decesion on whether it's worth your time and investment. Do not look at how some people on UA-cam have decided to try and make some profits but do your own research.

      @@SwanCastleCrypto Also I understand it may be difficult but looking at where the price was at launch and where it is now is just not an acurate picture of its true value. What you have to understand is that leading up to the coin launch XCH was extremly overhyped and shilled(not by the devs) and this caused the price to be at an extremely over inflated value at launch. The project leader afterall is one of the best known names in internet technology, Bram Cohen(developer of P2P torrent tech). It has of course since corrected. The devs had estimated the price per coin to be around $20 USD at launch. This just gives you a picture of how grossly inflated it was. I'm not going to lie and say I didn't profit off of that. I had 2 XCH at the time from farming only 20 plots over a couple weeks before launch and at lauch was able to sell for ~$1600 a piece. This was all straight profit as I was farming on an old 3770k system with just a few low TB drives that i had already. This allowed me to expand my farm without dipping into my own money, at least at the time. I've since expanded to 1/2PiB. The price has been very stable since reaching the bottom and a steady/healthy increase has been observed which correlates with the news and advancements they continue to make to the tech.

    I had a look at these and it's not worth it. The chance of hitting a block is low as it uses a raspberry pi and the drives used inside are recertified. I checked the board connected to the hdd and it is identical to Western Digital MyBook's.

  • @Get_Technical

    SSD’s will get wrecked with this as the lifetime of the drive will be reduced over time. HDD’s with the speed needed for this are massively expensive. Fast, long life SSD’s are also massively expensive. Unless the Chia price doubles every halving none of the devices will ever make money

    European electic rate is so much worse. I was tempted to get one of the Evergreen miners until I saw it was taking 3 years to pay back IGNORING the electric bill. It's so amazing how someone can make a video using the exact words of other you tubers who say the same thing as far as profitability but tell you this is what they are doing. However they are accused of scamming you, yet in their videos they say you are making less profit, and evergreen is only great for the convenience of those tho don't want to or have time to plot their own farmers. BTW: Notice the affiliate code only gives you a discount on the original price and does not increase the price. Yes the you tubers get a kickback, but none of them have said anything different from what Swan Castle is saying. Before you smear others pay attention to what they say and what you are saying. So am i missing something here. If someone invest in crypto they expect the price to go up. It doesn't matter what coin you hold and if it has a halving or not. The markt moves with BTC. So the halving of BTC has the most impact until this date. If people invest in evergreen miners or just harddisks they also expect the price to go up. And it is logic that the price only wentt down hill after the bullrun in 2021. BTC has a 4 year cycle. And in the bear market every coin goes down. So i think if chia goes up for example to $800,00 (not even the highest point you will get break even much faster. So did you do your calculations based on the current price? Because than i understand you will not get to break even.

    • @SwanCastleCrypto
      @SwanCastleCrypto  Рік тому

      99% of crypto tokens are going to zero. If you think the BTC halving is going to save your crypto, you’re going to be sadly disappointed.

      @@SwanCastleCrypto Hi. That's what they said in 2017. How long must i wait until 99% will be gone. Please do not be a maxi. Btc is only good for store of value. They are a lot off projects doing great stuff. I understand that not all projects will make it but this is the same with businesses arround the world. Some make it and some not. Also it is possible that the btc halving does not aply forever and it will not save all crypto. But all coins move up when btc does. So if btc hits a New all time high in 2025 and my coins still excist in 2025 than the possibility is that they are up too.

      Not trying to be a BTC maxi, just being realistic that most all projects are unsustainable ponzi's. I think the assumption you can just buy a coin and wait a few years and you'll make a bunch of money is flawed. Maybe CHIA has long term potential, my point of my video was not to bash on the project, but more highlight the limited profitability that most all others glossed over.

Now i have downsized my farm to 1070 plots and i really just break even every couple month meaning i make enough to pay costs. One thing to take into account is the hhd's will never last long enough to come close to breaking even so you have hdd replacement costs as well to factor in. Chia, Helium.....both money losers.
