Ripper not only saved Priest, he brought in a ton of younger fans. His 'Live in London' performance proves it all, and then some.

Man, awesome video. You mentioned a bit about how the Halford solo project was good. But to me, one thing that clearly overshadows the Ripper era is just how incredibly good Halford's solo project was. "Silent Screams" is so, so much better, it makes a joke out of the Ripper era songs.

I was 14 when juggulator came out and I was still discovering metal. It was my first Priest album and I loved every second of it. I only knew priest for singing breaking the law, when I heard bullet train I was hooked. I like the Halford Era priest better than the ripper Era now but juggulator was extremely important to me I followed Tim Owens career since. The man is legendary in his own right. I saw Tim (Ripper) live in a very small venue when Demolition came out. It was ok, but it wasn't Priest.. it just wasn't. IT was a forced effort to put out an album using the Judas Priest name. That said, I do think that Halford and the band needed some time apart.(At least Halford did at the time). Rob did some fantastic work on his own. I think it helped him own his age and perfect pushing his limitations. The truth is, I saw Judas Priest back in 1982, 83 multiple times and again in the later 80s. They broke up 2 times that I remember. The "Fight" years, and the "Ripper" era. The greatest shit in my opinion came early in their careers, and when they reunited. "PAINKILLER" was epic and still is, and take any album they've done after the Ripper era. It's just unreal.
That's not taking anything away from Ripper. K.K is doing shit on the side now with Ripper that kicks ass. The "K.K'S PRIEST" project is great.
But with respect to Mr Owens, Rob is not replaceable. There's just too much history there for that.

Wow this gives me flashbacks of John Bush vs Joey B for better Anthrax vocalist. I was 15 when Sound of White Noise came out and everyone was like damn where did this come from? Awesome. Anthrax navigated the metal/grunge changeover probably the best. I’m a John Bush fan and it’s fkd up the band didn’t even tell him he was out and made deals behind his back to get Joey back. It’s like they considered him a hired gun/day player. And now Anthrax perform NOTHING from SOWN bc Joey doesn’t like it.
Great video btw Ripper was in an impossible situation with all the legacy and greatness that came before which eventually crushed him like a tidal wave once the goodwill was gone. The Ripper era and the movie ‘Rockstar’ are intertwined for me.

The 90s was a difficult time for metal bands from the 80s. What had worked so well for them just wasn’t “cool” anymore so they had to change and “update” their sound to remain relevant. That experimentation led to some interesting, weird and sometimes terrible music.

And I agree the chorus is nice and that’s one of the songs on the album I kinda like, it’s only better because that was actually stolen by a Japanese industrial metal band/project :/ I believe either Glenn or the producer put that on there

Jugulator is an amazing metal album, people don't understand what they are talking about. Decapitate is the only song I did not like. The lyrics were much better than most of their other albums. Demolition is a very solid album as well.

I think the closest you'll get to those missing albums between Painkiller and Jugulator is Halford's Fight side project albums that had a transition from the typical Priest sound to the more Darker 90s sound.
I enjoy the Ripper albums (well mainly Jugulator as I'm a sucker for that 90s metal sound) but I'll 100% admit they have flaws especially on Demolition and yeah those lyrics are pretty damn bad.

I like metal, I listen to a lot of heavy bands, from old school thrash to brutal death metal…. And I like watching presentations like this one while I’m mowing lawn or something… but then I have to ask myself something about the people who make videos like this one
“Does this guy ever get laid?”
    …the answer is , clearly….. no…,

Jugulator crushed on all levels and was the last great/really good Priest album, everything that came after (including Demolition) was lukewarm at best. Angel of Retribution is still to this day one of the biggest disappointments in my life as far as music albums go, right up there with Dissection's Reinkaos and The Greater Wrong of the Right by Skinny Puppy. If I want to hear anything Halford-related post Painkiller, I'll go for the first Fight album or Resurrection.

Demolition's songwriting suffers from lots of monotone songs. Many songs have the same riff centered around E, D, F. I suspect Halford, who can play guitar and is sole writer ofemany of his solo songs, had more influence over the music writing than most people realized. And even if he may not have written a Priest song by playing it on guitar, he could contribute by singing melodies that send it in one direction or contribute by choosing material & giving feedback about what the others played.

Jugulator 8/10, Demolition 6/10 (worst Priest album), Live in London 9/10. I saw them on both tours, better than every Priest tour thereafter! And man, the lyrics are lame, but who cares!

I agree with most of what you said, especially the creative lyrics in Brain Dead, but sorry, Bullet Train is one of the best songs the Priest has ever released. Ripper's screams are relentless, the badass main riff mixed with the speed metal solo rivals songs like the Sentinel and Painkiller, Ian Hill has some of his best humming bass grooves in this song, and Scott travis's chops and bass drums blow the shit out of the 80s thrash metal drummers in bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. You know for a fact that Metallica won the Grammy award based on name recognition, so your argument against Bullet Train just seems invalid to me, but good analysis on everything else. Demolition was pretty mediocre, sadly...
