“My Worst Wipeout at Pipeline” - Eala Stewart

  • Eala Stewart is a household name on the North Shore of Oahu. The 28-year-old native Hawaiian's exploits at Pipe and beyond have earned him a reputation as a legit underground charger. When a bomb swings his way, the pecking order knows Eala is going to go.
Case in point: January 22nd saw the tail end of a very big, very west swell at Pipeline. It was still solid, some cappers on Second Reef, many more detonating on the First Reef, with no shortage of locals and hopeful visitors, all angling for glory.
Stewart paddled out clean, found his spot in the lineup and waited. "A lot of cat and mouse," he said. "Where a wash-through set comes through and you gotta come back to the inside to catch a double up."
The wave above was Stewart's first attempt that morning. "It looked like a really good, a-frame double-up as it was coming in," he said. "I stood up and did everything I always do, and I was connected -- and then I was in the air going,'this is gonna be a gnarly wipeout -- or let's try to stick this.' I stayed on top of my board thinking I was gonna make the barrel afterwards. Because you never know -- sometimes the ones you don't think you're gonna make are a butter landing and then you come flying out of the barrel."
Clearly, this did not happen. He landed in the flats, his fin box got blown off, he got sucked back up and over, hit the reef, glad to have decided to wear a helmet at Pipe for the first time. "Definitely my worst wipeout at Pipe," he said.

Oh my. I could feel the milliseconds of different emotions going down that drop and I'm not the one catching the wave. Sheesh!

Eala your a heavy humble ripper showing respect where it really counts at pipe what is most definitely the heaviest local spot that people like you choose to surf and pretty much has been for decades one stupid mistake could cost you your life either in the water or out of the water but to the local boys that surf pipe either the ones like JJF and his brothers who’s front yard is pipe and that’s all they know or to the other heavy weight locals who might have to ride their bike for a minute or 2 that are still in that category of being a heavy local top of the food chain type shit the A Pex predators on surfboards a lot of people have been complaining how there so aggressive IT HAS TO BE THAT WAY IF YOU LOOK AT IT REALLY THERE KEEPING MORE PEOPLE SAFE THEN SERVING UP DIRTY LICKINGS, ONE WORD WHEN YOUR SURFING PIPE OR CATCHING THE WAVES THAT THE BOYS DONT WANT CUZZ THERE WAITING FOR THE BOMBS TO COME IN IS “RESPECT” PERSONALLY THE WAY I LOOK AT IT THOSE BOMBS THAT COME IN AT PIPE NO PROBLEM YOU GUYS CAN HAVE UM MUCH RESPECT TO ALL THE LOCAL BOYS PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE WEAR THOSE BRAIN BUCKETS EVERYONE THEY WILL MOST LIKELY MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MANY MORE DAYS OF SURFING PIPE, MASSIVE RESPECT TO ALL.

The skull is a helmet for every day walking around but heavy Pipeline, and even not-so-heavy Pipeline a helmet would be critical in life or death or lifelong “invalid” situations? Likely some Pipe surfers would still be walking around today if they had been wearing a helmet. Definitely one or two surf photographers? A bunch of skiers and snowboarders would still be on this planet if they had been wearing helmet. Motorcyclists, kids riding in truck beds, etc.
I am glad you are in one piece and pretty much unscathed. Lucky you were wearing a helmet! 😅
