  • JoJo Rabbit: Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie & Roman Griffin Davis Interview
With writer-director Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit now playing in limited release, I recently sat down with Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie and Roman Griffin Davis for an exclusive interview. As you’ve probably heard me say a number of times, Jojo Rabbit is one of my favorite films of the year and Waititi has written and directed a fantastic anti-hate satire set in Nazi Germany. While I figured he would craft something special, Jojo Rabbit was well above my lofty expectations and many others had the same opinion as it won the coveted People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival against some serious competition.
If you haven’t seen the trailers, Jojo Rabbit follows a lonely 10-year-old boy Jojo (Griffin Davis) in Nazi Germany whose imaginary best friend Adolf Hitler (Waititi) eggs him on. But Jojo’s loyalties and beliefs are tested when he discovers that his mother (Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (McKenzie) in their attic. The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant and Alfie Allen.
During my interview with Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie and Roman Griffin Davis, they talked about their reaction to reading the script for the first time, how it’s important to constantly remind people what really happened during WW2, if Stephen Merchant ever tried to get them to break during takes, what it was like collaborating with Taika Waititi on set, and more.

She's honestly a good actress, it's a shame because she's overlooked mostly for her character of Black Widow in the MCU, even tho personally I feel like the character sucks, she carries it very well and I hope she gets more profound roles in the movie industry.

I watched this movie yesterday because Scarlett is in it, and I loved it.. It reminded me of Life is beautiful (Roberto Benigni).. they both make you laugh out loud and then cry like children, and they both represent parents who want to protect their children in a world where the war and the holocaust are very much real, from 2 different perspective, but still ... I really appreciate the way this 2 young actors speak and are able to put their thoughts into words

I probably should not admit it because I am italian but I prefer Jojo Rabbit over La Vita è Bella. I find it to be a better comedy, more belieavable, and at the very least Taika is vague about the location, so he can get away with potential historical inaccuracies. Benigni's movie is set in Auschwitz, but in the end you see that is being liberated by the USA army, which didn't happen.

I think people need to bear in mind that this was not the only genocide in history, there have been many throughout the ages and it's also not the only genocide of white people (because really that's why it's so highlighted as a genocide, as it happened in a white Western country). Even England has engaged in genocide as recently as the 1800's. 1 million Irish in the 1840's potato famine and 1 million Indians in South India in famine of the 1860's. Both were Queen Victoria's fault. She had the money to help, but refused re wanting to cull poor people the way we cull pest animals today. Yet, the UK won't say a bad word about her and twice now Judi Dench has portrayed her in a positive light in British films. Imagine if someone made a film showing Hitler in a positive light. Wake up UK. Queen V also stopped Turkey from sending funds to Ireland to help, it truly was genocide.

"needs to be a WWII film each year to remind people of what happened"
Says the guy who wears black nail polish and thinks one gets their education from movies based off of fiction which are loosely based on historical events.
