I always liked that Alex actually addresses the whole "gay" aspect if you date him as a male farmer, makes him feel more...real, I suppose? It bums me out that there isn't a similar feel with any other male marriage partner.

Elliott and Sebastian also have special 10-heart dialogue if you romance them as a guy. I’m not sure if any of the girls have that kind of dialogue for the female farmer though, besides Leah in her 2-heart event, unfortunately. I wish they all did.

I've seen this sentiment a lot! Alex's story is the only one where I feel like there are two characters at play depending on if you're a man or woman. Because he can obviously be very happily married to a woman farmer. Maybe I'm just doing mental gymnastics. 🤷‍♂️

I wouldn't be surprised if ConcernedApe had originally planned for Alex to be in the closet with his story arc, as Alex's dialogue seems to change the most out of any of the marriage candidates I've seen based on the farmer's gender. But it would be a bit odd to break the playersexual formula only for Alex, so that's probably why if I had to guess.
You could even read his line about the player marrying Haley as him being in the closet, as he says it's a chance for him to learn something about himself. Perhaps he'd been expecting to settle down with Haley at some point and used that as an excuse not to examine any confusion he had about his sexuality.

    • @amygirl5678

@@lexslater2747 I also seem to recall him having a piece of dialogue about Sebastian early on that can be read about him being perhaps a little bit attracted to him. It definitely stood out to me that it could lean in that direction at any rate.
Looking at how much his stuff stands apart from the other marriageable characters it makes me wonder if he was actually supposed to be a marriage candidate at first. His story reads much more as Shane's does and Shane also didn't start out as a marriage candidate. Perhaps he was supposed to be an NPC with a coming-out storyline before he was shifted to being a marriage candidate making that side of romance more impactful because of it. Even George's dialogue would fit this.
There's also the fact that in the Winter he goes somewhere that player can only access if they're male. None of the other marriage candidates have this. Unless their house is closed you can reach them no matter where they are as long as you have two hearts with them.

@@amygirl5678 There’s a lot to be said with Alex about compulsive heterosexuality, potentially biphobia as well as homophobia (in an admittedly gay-specific way that cuts out most of the bi part, hence why CA might’ve dropped it if that was ever the intent), or it could have always been about subtle hints that he could be interested in guys so that male players could be more comfortable in pursuing him. Plus, the fact that the possible NPC love interests he had were Haley and with that bit of dialogue Sebastian really give me some queer vibes. Haley’s got some similar compulsively hetero behaviour; Sebastian’s receptive to any love he lets in and is quite social sometimes despite his closed off nature, the direct opposite as Alex turns out to be.
Honestly, there’s a lot of things you can read into some of the characters with regards to sexuality that are unexplored expressly so we can read into them ourselves, so I can see the ambiguity being intentional. Maybe that makes it seem more real or just superficial, I’m not a perfect judge for that. It gives some credit to your wondering whether he was meant to be marriageable originally, but it would make sense for that story to happen with a male player 🤷 everyone being interested in the player whoever they are throws a wrench in that

I’d attribute his dumb, macho behavior in part to having had crappy male role models (I love George because he’s an irascible old coot, but, still), and in part because he has grown up idolizing professional gridball players, who are no doubt lionized in the “Today we interview Jim Bexley Speed, top attacker in the world, about his throng of adoring girlfriends!” style. I’ve never done a marriage route, but Alex is absolutely my favorite marriage candidate. I really hated him at first because of some of the stuff he said to me, but George was my best friend so I found myself talking to him often while I was there. Then one rainy day I got his cutscene with Dusty and was suddenly intrigued. Nit forgiving, just wanted to know some more. I ended up giving him the eggs I had to spare and seeing all of his heart events within the year. The one where he apologizes to the player is my favorite cutscene in the game, there’s just something so impactful about his progression as a character. Maybe it helps a little that I actually got his cutscenes out of order (with eight hears being the second one I got, five the third, and six the fourth) but that’s besides the point haha. I think it kind of gets into why I was a Shane hater for a long time. Shane, and honestly quite a few characters in the game, serve a bit of a savior complex. They’re broken, but the player can “fix” them. I really hate that sort of dynamic, it feels one-sided and unhealthy. Alex, on the other hand, is someone who is inspired by the player to work on himself. You don’t see the offscreen moments of realization and betterment that you might with other characters, but when you stop by every day you see the effects bit by bit.

I would argue Shane isn't a complete serve to a savior complex fantasy as based on his dialogue where's he makes an attempt to end his life. The farmer has the option to bring up his niece and how she would be affect or has been affected by his self destructive behavior and upon the realization that his spiriling is hurting those he cares about he shows genuiene regret. In my opinion it more that the farmer was able to be the cataylst to Shane's self-improvement.
Now I will admit it possible I intrept his arc differently because I saw myself in Shane somewhat luckily I wasn't as self destructive as him due to me having a decent support group something Shane seems to be lacking as Marnie doesn't seem to understanding to Shane's depressive episodes- although this maybe due to the fact I've never been motivated to get high friendship levels with Marnie so I have a limited perspective of her. Regardless the point I'm attempting to make is that self-improvement is often difficult without some sort of person or people to support you as it's a non-linear path that can have many points of relapse. I know that relapses often made my perception of all my hard work feel nonexistant so I can only imagine the same can be said for Shane.
I really think Shane just need someone outside his living situation to truly bond with to get that much needed wake up call.
Really hope this doesn't come as argumentive I just have a lot of things to say regarding his character and wished to share my own insights.
Also in a semiunrelated note I'll conceed to the fact he's not the best marriage canidate as all his pervious progress within the game seem to disappear. While I know from experience the struggle of fighting depression is difficult, his pessimistic outlook returning within most of his after marriage diaulogue was difficult to to read every ingame day and wished that the progress from 10 hearts event carried onwards into marriage.

And I was especially drawn to the fact that he hasa daughter. Yes Jas is his GODdaughter. But he and Marnie are the ones raising her because her parents are out of the picture for some reason. The 2 of them are all she has now so Shane is basically like her dad. And god knows he loves her the way a dad would and that makes me love him more because I love children, a person who also loves children definitely has goodness in them. And I think that actually might have been interesting in this game. Having a marriageable NPC who is a single parent already. Not trying to come off as rude, but I don't like the cliché narrative that gets thrown around about you suddenly becoming a bad person just because you had a tough life or didn't have the right role model, it comes off as pathetic in a way.
I know a lot of characters/people who grew up in a crappy environment but are the kindest, caring, compassionate and loving people out there.
I know what Concernedape was trying to go for when writing Alex as a character, but if I'm being honest, he kinda comes off as a spoiled (probably bigoted) brat.
Yes I know he had a tough life when his mother passed, and his grandfather was probably being an abusive old coot, but Alex fails to focus on the positive of things of his life that many more TRAGIC people could've beged for.
He still has a loving, caring grandmother, Evelyn (Who is kinda underrated imo), he is very skilled at sports and could become a champion if he tries hard enough, he has a dog that also loves him very much, do I need to go on?
Tl;DR: No hate to the Alex fans, but I feel like he comes off rude for no apparent reason even though his mother passed. He just fails to look at the good things he has in life that the more TRAGIC people don't...

I’m definitely in the camp of “Alex grows on me platonically, but I don’t vibe with him on a romantic level,” especially after the saloon dinner where he orders me a salad without my input. It would be different if an earlier cutscene/interaction had me answer what my favourite food is and he orders that-a show that he cares and paid attention to what I said, maybe even during a point where he’s still in the headspace that men and women are “separate beings.”
As you said, his arc feels more impactful if you’re a male farmer, and I do think that’s cool! He obviously resonates with many people, especially as he becomes more vulnerable about his abilities and his feelings. For me, it is nice to reach a place with Alex where he trusts me to not make fun of him or belittle him for not “upholding hegemonic masculinity.” But that vulnerability never hits the “romantic switch” in my brain.

    @folgerkelley2715 2 роки тому +124

I really like Alex for 2 reasons not really discussed in this video
    1. Most marital candidates can be categorized by their aspirations/independence. As you brought up with the Abigail video this can put the younger characters in a strange place where when they marry it sort of feels like they’re being stunted, while for the older/established characters it can feel like a more natural part of their life, Elliot is still writing, Leah is still sculpting, etc. I’m going to call Shane, Alex, and Penny the big three exceptions to this rule as Penny’s primary aspiration seems to be having a family--so mission accomplished if she has kids with the farmer-Shane is in the midst of a crisis and his marriage story is much of a savior story, the farmer supporting him with their love--and Alex
As you brought up, Alex’s story is one in which the garner teachers him to be vulnerable and emotionally expressive in a healthier way, that benefits his own well-being and also dampens his macho put-on, unlike many of the other marital characters Alex’s aspiration is one that he *overcomes* through dating and marrying the farmer. Being a football star is part of his quest to prove his worth-if he’s good at football he has to be good enough to prove himself by going pro. In-game this is sort of teetered as a ridiculous or unrealistic goal. Abigail wants to fight monsters and do magic in a world and town where both things are possible and not uncommon but Alex wants to somehow become a professional athlete despite seemingly not being affiliated with any school or minor leagues. He’s not even on a team. He’s not actually working towards a goal as much as coping with his sense of inadequacy.
But through the farmer’s relationship Alex learns to unhither his self worth and his physique and sportsmanship, and finds strength and security in his relationship to the farmer. Alex’s arc isn’t cut short by marrying the farmer and settling down it’s COMPLETED - Alex is secure enough in his masculinity and self worth to find joy and purpose in settling down as a stay-at-home father on the successful farm his breadwinner spouse runs. It’s why the misogany doesn’t bother me because at the end of the day the farm is always player-headed. If a Female farmer marries Alex that’s still Alex taking on the domestic/submissive role in a marriage. The player is always head of the house and usually presumably the breadwinner on the farm. (I kind of hope Harvey is making good money he IS a doctor)
    2. Alex’s relationship with the player is a complete inversion of the hallmark rural romance trope. Alex is from Stardew Valley while the player is from the city and just moved here. Typically a hallmark movie will have someone from the city off break from a big city job visit a small rural town and meet a local business owner or assistant at a family owned store, who is usually cocky and snarky and a little misogynistic or sweet and naive and a little chauvinistic, and they teach the big city visitor that their job isn’t as important as the rural community they’ve been apart of their whole life and they fall in love and the city slicker abandons their life and becomes part of their rural boyfriend’s life, working in the family store or whatever.
Except….Alex doesn’t have anything going on. The farmer does. The farmer IS a former city slicker but they get a hold of things in as little as 2 years while Alex watches, failing to pursue his dream as an athlete. As such Alex is humbled by the player’s success and becomes part of THEIR world by moving to the farm and giving up his dreams of sport ball to be a stay-at-home farm dad

Alex is a great example of toxic masculinity and internalized misogyny. I think that it would have been different if he had better role models instead of his abusive father and George, who we as the farmer may come to love, was probably not the best at showing Alex how to treat woman and also a lot of old-fashioned ways of thinking, such as the one he expresses to you before reaching 10 hearts with the farmer. The ways he treats the female farmer even at the ten-heart event are still not great, he shows a lot of growth since we as the player first meet him. Again, I have a bias since he was my first marriage candidate and I'm a sucker for himbos, but I think that he's still a great character outside of that with a lot of immersion and depth.

When I did my first playthrough of stardew valley, while I married Sebastian, Alex was my best friend. I played as a woman character so his comments did sort of bother me, but after accidently getting his Dusty heart scene, everything clicked and I was a lot more gentle in my perception with him. I was abused for a while by someone important to me and I know how horribly it can affect someone. With Alex not having a good male role model in his life, it just made sense that he'd say those crappy things. Football players, I've seen, have that air about them, especially the highschool football players that think that they're going to go big league but end up working at a gas station. But that's all usually a presentation, and Alex embodied it in a very important way for me. So he's always been one of my favorite villagers, he was always so complicated and that made me enjoy his company, even if he said the dumbest sexist things when trying to bond. Alex understands the concept of working together to build something for the future and does his best to be a good homemaker. He is a bit of a misogynist, but even in Stardew Valley, one should never think a person will fundamentally change for the better just because you're married, lol. Alex isn't too low on my list. I actually really like him aside from the sexist comments. It does bother me a bit, but I like that he opens his mind as you get to know him better. What stuck with me is his comment about his hair. He just keeps it that way to be popular with ladies. As much as he's more sexist towards women, he limits himself so he can be popular with them. It's more sad than anything to me. I like seeing him slowly grow, starting with him not putting hair gel in his hair. It's such a small thing, but he finally felt confident to try something new with his hair. Alex and Elliott both talk about their hair. Elliott mentions he struggles with long hair, but is too vain to cut it off. That makes sense, I've had long hair and I definitely miss the styling of it even if I don't miss the struggles of it. But Alex flat out says he only keeps his hair that way cause of women. Where Elliott's is a personal choice and liking despite the difficulties, Alex keeps it that way for women, for others. It really feels like Alex just got these problematic views as he grew up cause nobody thinks like that and with his dad calling him worthless, we can bet that plays into why he tries to appeal to others, mostly women. I grew up in an abusive home so I can relate a lot to some of his insecurities. It doesn't excuse being sexist or anything, but I like that he's not perfect and he has some character growth.
With jock types, I either love them or hate them. You get the himbo or good natured jocks even if they're a bit problematic at some points or you get the obnoxious sport fanatics that just get tiresome and never learn. Alex is the first one and so even if he's sexist at earlier points, I like seeing him get better. I like his story. He's about mid tier on my list and honestly I was so tempted to choose him during my first playthrough, but Elliott is RIGHT THERE and so is Shane. And Emily. Oh those three were such a fight. I ended up choosing Elliott because he's best boy and I love everything about him. But Alex was pretty close to being my choice.
I think Leah is personally bottom of the list for me. Not because I dislike her, but when I think of marrying someone, I just don't feel drawn to her. I get along with her, I like her, she was somewhat tempting at first with her background, but even with new OCs and new playthroughs, I just don't feel drawn to her like I once did. She's great and I like being friends, but when I think "maybe Leah?" my gut just doesn't feel it.
Edit: I feel Alex also has some internalized homophobia. Not that he dislikes women, but he thinks that women are the only option for him. So he doesn't consider guys until the farmer comes in and helps him learn about himself. Unlike other characters who are very chill with having a crush on the same gender, Alex never really mentions it since he always talks about women. It's when he gets close to a male farmer that he realizes it and I like that :)
Edit 2: I like how he admits he struggles with reading. I like to think he has a disability like dyslexia or something so he's never found a joy in reading. It reminds me of my friend. She struggles a lot with reading even in video games cause of her dyslexia so she doesn't find an interest in it. It feels so real to me and I like seeing him try even though even the thought of opening a book makes him nervous. I feel like it was also ingrained that he would never be good enough because he struggled with reading and learning like a normal kid (that is a huge mood) and so that's why reading makes him so nervous. It's a headcanon/interpretation I have, but it just makes sense and makes his character more real. It isn't just the "dumb jock" stereotype, he genuinely seems to struggle with reading by his dislike of it despite having so many books.

Personally, I like Alex. I think a lot of the things he says early on come from ignorance rather than malice. I see a lot of people be really turned off him because of the whole girls and sports comment but I never really saw an issue with that, looking at the girls in stardew there aren't really any that seem sporty or like they would ever have had any interest in sports growing up. So growing up he sees all these girls that don't like sports and because of that they don't know how to play so it would make sense that in his mind he went "okay so girls dont know how to play sports. Got it"
Like it's still bad but I can see it comes from misunderstanding and not "oh girls are so weak and pathetic theres no way they could ever play sports", yk?

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat 2 роки тому +11

For me, it wasn’t just the “women cannot play sports” thing, but just this arrogance he has early on-particularly the point that he won’t donate his old shoes because he doesn’t like the idea of someone else wearing his stuff, then being confused by a presumably weird look from the farmer. That uncharitable thing has stuck with me, and I always cringe when I encounter it in new playthroughs.
That’s not to say I don’t appreciate his character growth though. As Leap details, Alex doesn’t appear to have a healthy male role model, and he only seems to interact with Haley for company. The Pelican Town pool is very shallow for population interaction, haha. So I definitely appreciate that he grows into a better version of himself over time. However, the first impressions linger, so unless I’m going to play with a character written in my head to romance Alex, he’s firmly in the platonic besties zone.

In George's defense, as a gay man myself also with grandparents of more conservative views, I appreciate his conservative views in story simply because it is more realistic and adds depth and more believability to the story. While 10 hearts needed to change his mind is much, keep in mind people his age normally get to a point wherein they will ride or dye with their ideals and do not want to change and as sad as it sounds. With that in mind, the mere fact he does atleast change and warm up is atleast progressive enough for me because its big to ask someone to change what they've been used to for so long. Yes change must come to us and we should aim to improve, but still, I sympathize with George in the fact he kinda has to adjust and make changes just like that.
Over all, this is surprisingly good writing on CA's part imo. As much as I like gay people being happy and pursuing the life to be themselves, any story is only as good as the conflict and stakes they've had to go through to get it and this does the role well enough for me.

•the first time I played stardew valley I chose the female farmer (I still play the female farmer). I actually was infatuated with Haley. But as I kept playing I really liked Alex. (Stardew valley played a roll in discovering my own Bisexuality. And I kind of head canon Alex as bi too)
•The first heart scene I chose the ‘angry’ response when he made a cliché sexist remark. And he does kind of back off a bit, which I respected. Although I thought of him as a one dimensional jock until the scene about his dad. That changed everything.
•Alex not only lacked a father figure, but a mother too (his mom loved him but died when he was young). The way I see it, the female farmer not only helps him open up about his trauma, but also teaches him to see women as regular people. And he apologizes about the macho stuff.

Alex is my second favorite bachelor after Sebastian! I have a soft spot for both of them,. Alex can be ass, especially because I play as a girl, but I love his character for all the other reasons! Once you get more hearts he has a lot of cute dialogue. I can’t remember the specific of it, but if you see Alex in the winter he comments how you walked all the way in the snow to see him, he blushes and says something along the lines of if we see Haley to tell her that he’s busy. I think you can see his softer sides and see that he has a crush in the player earlier than some of the other marriage candidates.
I think all the marriage candidates having flaws and these story lines makes them such better characters. Sam is one of my favorites too but he is usually always chill and he doesn’t have many flaws, he has great storylines but he doesn’t feel as deep as a character like Alex or Shane. I like Shane’s character story but never marry or date him.

I never took his comments personally (probably cuz the whole sports thing is more of a relief that I don’t have to play catch cuz I hate sports lol) but something that rly struck me as a female player befriending him was at that one cutscene by the beach where he’s remembering his mom, he calls you his best friend in town. He doesn’t confess his love or think you have feelings for him because you’re nice, he genuinely appreciates a platonic bond w you. i feel like if left alone, he definitely would’ve developed some genuine misogyny, especially if his relationship with haley was left to develop. they are SO bad for each other!

I don't see why people hate him so much. He was the first person I really liked on the game and I married him (as a girl). People think it's all bad about him asking if you had a bikini, he's mostly just asking do you have a bathing suit but said something different. He's very kind and he had a pretty bad past. He just needs some love and company.

Thank you for doing all of these! I've only ever played a woman, so once I got the first comment from him, I kind of tuned his existence out. Your channel kind of reminded me that he exists! I think his story with the guy famer is really sweet.

I didn’t find any of the marriage candidates that compelling my first playthrough, but the response on the eight heart scene that was highlighted did tip the scales in Alex’s favor. While I’ve grown a general fondness for the all of the villagers through exposure and an attachment to Leah because of a butch lumberjack mod I found, that scene with Alex is still probably the only story beat that I have a deeper connection with.

I always either marry him or Sebastian (other than when I was scared to marry a guy for if my family saw and I'd be outed 🤣) but this video has taught me that Alex is one of the best characters to marry if you're male but one of the worst if you're female.

Lol I'm too kinda scared of being outed as a trans guy since I play on Xbox in the living room, I'm ftm so my farmer is obv male, but if my mom ever noticed and asks me about it I can just tell her the farmer is preimposted lol

I think the only reason I eventually warmed up to Alex but not Haley despite them having a very similar archetype was that Alex does at least acknowledge and apologize to you for being a jerk in your earlier interactions. Some of his other day-to-day dialogue contradicts that apology a bit, but overall Alex seems to grow a lot more and take responsibility for how he treats you, which is nice to see.

As a gay guy, I was deciding whether I should go for Alex or Shane, but ultimately decided on Alex.
I could never understand why he was unpopular (unlike Shane), but now after hearing how he acts towards the female farmer, I kinda understand it more.
I still like him and he will stay my favourite Bachelor.

When i first started playing (as male) i instantly got interested in Alex's story
His whole character growth and self discovery are so endearing to me and the gay story just makes me happy :)
Im married to him on my farm and couldn't be happier

Alex is my absolute favourite character, my interpretation is that he's starts of as a completey toxic masculine jerk because he had no role model or person to learn from or even talk to other than his grandparents, George especially. His character arc makes me cry in every single run I play, especially his 10 heart cutscene. This was a great video analysis!

My little gay high school self before I transitioned was so in love with Alex after going through all these cutscenes with him. And it was because, just like you said, it was a much more meaningful romance-line to go through as a male that I decided not to pursue him again post my transition.

I honestly love Alex. He was my first and remains my favorite spouse. But that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm here to talk about how I randomly stumbled on your channel from this video (probably born from my want to defend Alex) and was completely caught off guard by your Stormlight references, and happy to see that they're in other videos too. Thank you for this crossover I didn't know I needed.
