Just because tesla says something doesn't make it true. There are open source neural networks like YOLO that could easily figure out and sort by color ages ago. Really the only hard part of this would be getting the robot to grab the piece but I mean hard for a college student.
If it was what you think it was they would have threw the Lego to the ground or even just at the edge of the table but they didn't and just put it back into the cameras field of view. You know why? Because if they did it would have no idea a Lego is missing since it's just a simple sort by color task it can't "learn" anything beyond that.

The Tesla bot has made tremendous progress in just a few months. The reason is because Musk and his team understand A.I. and machine learning. Lots of companies can make a physical robot but then each little movement has to be pre-programmed. What makes this bot great is that it uses machine learning and Artificial Intelligence to do things autonomously and it is going to get better and better each and every month. I don't think anyone else is going to end up with a robot as good as this one will be. I think in perhaps 18 months it will be doing amazing things which will be useful in real world situations. From what I understand, even these actions in this video of being able to pick and sort things out and adjust to changes as it does are already actions that are of use in a number of factory situations.
