If you're wondering why I didn't go to other places like Big Kahuna's, Magoo's, Amina's, etc...that is not the pizza I was looking for and their crust and style is in a whole 'nother category. And now I will not eat pizza for another year!
Hey Misty, I feel that finding good pizza on Oahu is almost as unlikely as finding good (or even decent) poke on the mainland! The real deal is hard to match so I've given up and I fly for my pie. Mahalo for trying. 🤣🤣🤣
@@seekidea it is as hard as finding great Mexican food here but Black Shamrock and J Dolan are my jam. Have you ever tried it? But if you don't like thin crust you wouldn't like it just like I wouldn't like thick crust.
@@FoodFiend Haha, agreed about Mexican food! As simple as pizza looks it's really an art form. I agree that I ask a lot but when you've tried east coast pizzas you realize that it can be done. Mahalo for suggesting Aloha Beer. Maybe one day I'll try it! Thanks so much for your kind words. Yes it takes a lot of time and editing but it's all good! I am glad we agree on J Dolans and Ili'Ili Cash and Carry. I think if you like J Dolans you'll love Black Shamrock!

Aloha Misty: Thank you for taking us for a culinary tour of pizza on Oahu. It is nice to see the variety of good pizza in our hometown. I never know about this culinary experience until your vlog. After you attended school on the East Coast, I am glad that you can enjoy a good pizza. I still think of Pizza Hut for my pizza-experience in Honolulu, because my friends, and I, used to go for their pizza buffet when we went for lunch - nothing special but it was filling. Looking forward to your next great vlog. Best wishes to you, friends and your family! Much 🤙, fellow 🐯! 🧧!
I used to love Pizza Hut when they served the personal pan pizza in the cast iron pan. My mom would take me to the old Pizza Hut on N King St across Kapalama Post office for a treat once in a while. Those were the rare times we ate out. We rarely even ate McDonalds.
Thanks for such an extensive survey of pizza places in Oahu. Cool that you have experience with living on the East Coast and can comment on pizza from that perspective. Was really curious about Black Shamrock Tavern ever since hearing it was founded by the pizza maker at the former J.J. Dolans. Last I checked way back the pizza wasn’t available yet. Glad to hear it’s on the menu now and that it’s great. Will have to try it. It won’t topple your top picks, but when I was trying out different pizzas, I was pleasantly surprised by Aloha Beer Company’s pepperoni pizza on Queen St. in Kakaako. Look forward to discovering more good restaurants from you.
Thanks for watching Marcus! I will have to try the pizza at Aloha Beer. I think I went there a long time ago and ate their ribs and filmed it. Beer and pizza go so well together. Have a great week ahead! 🤙
Aloha Misty!! We definitely love thin crust pizza the best and East Coast pizza spots make it great. It was great to see all these spots and how each one varied from one another. Great job touring sooooo many spots and mahalo as always for taking us along!! Hopefully we can coordinate a trip to the East Coast for authentic pizza one day!! 🤙🏽
Aloha Michelle and Jose! Yes please add Black Shamrock and J Dolan to your list. I'd like to hear your thoughts and they are kinda in the same area along the lines of Downtown Honolulu and Chinatown. I would say if you're parked in municipal parking it is walkable but not that close to each other. It's thin crust so if you get a slice from J Dolan's and a full pie (since they don't do slices) at Black Shamrock you won't feel disgusting after eating it all. After sharing the pie with Aiden at Black Shamrock I could eat proably 2 more slices before feeling disgustingly full.
Thanks for the pizza tour in Honolulu. As another viewer stated, it’s the water. It seemed more or a chore than an enjoyment making this pizza video…..lol
Yes the water makes a difference with the minerals from NY water. That's why the bagels and pretzels come out nice. But it can be achieved here or anywhere else if you use quality flour with high gluten. It was a very long process but I'm glad I found the ones I like. It was also a learning process for me. So now I know where to go in the future.
Aloha Misty, I enjoyed your Pizza vlog! I too try to make my own "perfect" pizza, making my own dough and sauce. So mahalo! Now, do you remember an Italian cuisine restaurant, Sabrina's, which used to be at the corner of St. Louis Heights Drive and Waialae Ave.? They were truly a fine "slow cooked" cuisine. And BYOB. Sadly, they no longer exist. Do you know of any other similar restaurants? Mahalo!
Aloha Gen! Yes been experimenting myself. I like east coast bar style pizzas the best. Or like a New Haven. Hope you're close to your style of dough at home! When Sabrina's was around I didn't have much money to eat so I never ate out much. Or maybe I just never noticed it unfortunately. Wish I could've tasted their food though. Now I have regrets!
Lol it's true. Prior to this I don't think I ate pizza for a year and prior to that maybe 4 to 5 years? I think if I ate it too often I'd become a whale. I gain weight so fast. Out of sight out of mind. But it makes you appreciate it more!
I love thin crust pizza, good to know. Most pizzas are very “doughy”! This is how pizzas are made in Italy, fresh ingredients and do good. They use the 00 flour which gives it a nice chewy texture ! Thanks fir show-casing all these awesome eateries in Oahu.
Yes please try Regina's. But there are franchises in malls. Don't go to those. They suck. Go to the original in the North End. No parking so take the subway. I gave them a police patch that hangs on their wall. 🤙
Awesome review, I will be taking my second trip to Oahu this December, and I have been watching your reviews closely. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing the good experiences!
Misty, my friend, I am feeling your pain through this one. I can see you're so over this pizza tour. Mahalo for suffering through it and letting us know where NOT to go. 😋😉😔🤭😄
If Agostino's opens up again, his pizza was easily by far the best I ever had in my life, and once I had his pizza, I couldn't eat any other pizza here. It was as good as this place in NYC in the theatre district (they moved and I haven't found their new location), which I found out from Agostino is his cousin's place. No wonder they were pretty much the same and the best I've ever eaten.
That's good to know it was good. He was on my personal list a long time ago before I even started YT just to try it but I didn't get to it. Too bad for me. The pictures of the pizza looked yummy.
Great video! Lot's of places covered! I, too, prefer thin crust pizza but yeah, there's always the soggy middle problem. I once saw on Food Network, I think "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," a place that twice bakes the crust to solve the problem. Crust is par baked, then cheese is added first to "protect" the crust from the sauce moisture. It looked pretty good! As far as the Pizza Mamo attitude guy, that pizza would have to be above and beyond for me to go back. Kind of like Nisshodo Mochi where there used to be a grouchy older lady and a sweet younger lady at the counter. Whenever I go, if I'm next in line and I'm getting the grouchy lady, I tell the person behind me to go ahead, "I'm still deciding!" LOL!
Great video, Misty. You hit many of our favorites! We stopped at Black Shamrock Tavern today and got the Double ‘Roni Pie which was great! I still prefer ili ili Cash & Carry and J Dolans over BST but very happy to have discovered them. THANK YOU! Sorry you had a bad experience at Pizza Mamo. We’ve had good experiences there and like their Potato Pizza for an interesting diversion from the traditional.
Hey Patrick! So glad you actually went to BST! I'm glad you enjoyed it and no problem everyone has their favorites! I do love J Dolan and ICC too. Next time try Repetti's and I'd like to hear your thoughts. 😊
Well done! Great review, so comprehensive with places and descriptions! Been craving really good east coast pizza for months now and have been to a lot of the places you showed during that time. And getting my fix by longingly watching youtube series on the topic (The Pizza Show, One Bite etc). Unfortunately i experienced the same at pizza mamo and the daley (which i think has the same owner, so not sure what's going on there). If food is bomb i will definitely deal with "soup nazi" treatment but otherwise nah. I totally want to go to Black Shamrock Tavern, i love the red building and a good pub, knowing it's got authentic pizza is more reason to go 👍!
Yep I did a video on the Daley. If they're the same owners then no surprise. Douchbags both of them. And their food ain't all that. Definitely try Black Shamrock. I'd definitely go back again and it got Aiden's approval! 🤣
@@FoodFiend If it's Aiden approved then that's a green light 👌! Your son is really getting a culinary education with you as Mama Food Fiend steering the ship. Props to you for sharing that with him 👍!
Totally agree with you on the drag ingredients at boconcino. I like ili ili a lot but I have to check out a bunch of your recs. Btw you made me crack up, with the east coast attitude. Don't miss that at all 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh yea, Pizza out east is the best. I miss the Pizza from the NYC area when I lived there many moons ago. when I was in Switzerland last year my coworkers found a killer Pizzeria in Lausanne. I think that pizza was baked in a wood or coal fired oven, I remember the crust was charred a little and was super crispy.
You are fantastic for doing this! Thank you soo much, we've been trying to find a good pie here on Oahu too. Yeah that Detroit pizza place was such a disappointment, can't believe that place is still open 😂 Thanks again!❤❤❤
Thanks for doing all this research for all of your followers. I have watched all your videos since the beginning and I think this is your best one yet! You are always so positive with every eatery you review so when you unloaded on Pizza Mamo, I really sat up and listened. Shame on them for giving you a bad customer experience. I will definitely not be getting any pizzas from them. On the positive side, I will check out J. Dolan's, Black Shamrock Tavern and 'ili'ili Cash and Carry based on your scores. Keep up the good work!
Mahalo for following so long! I try to be nice to all local businesses because I know it's hard to even run a business in this state with the competition and costs. But if something is terrible whether it is the food or service I will address it. Of course, living here, most customer service is pleasant. The other worst review I had was the Daley. They are next door on the corner of Pizza Mamo. Maybe that location turns you into a douchebag?
Hey Misty: Thanx for your honest revu ... Regarding Brick Fire Tavern - Neapolitan style pizza are suppose to be soft in the middle, according to this Italian friend of mine, I personally dont like it soft in the middle either ... next time ask for it 'well done' if you ever go back!!
Aloha Jerry! Thanks for the info. Yeah not my type of thing. But I will say the pasta there was amazing and the dessert. I just didn't include it in there since it was a pizza video.
In the Central Valley of California, near Fresno, we have the Me N Ed's Pizza chain. For the longest time, the one in my hometown was the best one, and still is in my opinion. Now that Valentino's has shut down there really isn't strong competition against them.
I think your reviews were spot on, and that's from a basic perspective of what should be expected. Seeing those wet, soggy pizzas reminded me of "National Lampoons vacation" where the dog made shishi on the sandwiches🤐😬
My favorite is the broccolini slice from Ili'Ili along with their garlic cheese balls. I've had 2 pinsas from Bocconcino. One same as you had, perfect. The other was soggy. Not great but I loved the burrata. Pizza Mamo was just ok and service sucked so I'm not going back. I had 2 slices at J. Dolan's in Kahala. My first few bites were good and hot but they keep the restaurant so cold that the slices went cold. Not nearly as good as pizza straight from the fridge. Maybe I'll try their downtown location. Speaking of downtown, I must try Black Shamrock Tavern. You lit up on that one! Repetti's as well. Thanks for exposing me to more of my favorite food!
I never tried the J Dolan in Kahala. I forgot they expanded. Since you work nearby you can try a slice for lunch? It's right around the corner from Ft St Mall. Didn't take too long walking in. I just went right up to the bar to ask for a slice to go. Took about 5 mins to make. Black Shamrock was so good I'd definitely go again. And yeah Pizza Mamo was meh.
I loved this video! Always looking for a good pizza and I really love your comments! Chang on the sausage. You don’t need to kiss anyone’s butt. 😂😂😂 it’s like hearing something I would say!!!
I’m not a pizza aficionado by any means, but I do prefer thin crust pizza with proper charring on the underside. That Roman style pizza looked amazing with the visible charring, crispy bits all around. I would put that on my list of restaurants to try next time I’m on Oahu.
Love your honesty Misty. Yeah, no excuse for 'tude when competition is fierce and restaurants are closing shop daily it seems. I'm actually a fan of Boston's North End, probably because it's a 10-15 minute drive from home. I think that place in Kemoo was once a Boston's - maybe why their sauce is similar. Have you tried Pizza Press in Highland's Center? Try their Tribune if you go. Pretty good by my low standards, haha. BTW, when we were in New York in March-April, we found a terrific spot on Broadway after we got out of a musical at the St. James Theater: Angelo's Pizza at 1697 Broadway. Open 'til 3. Mangiare!
Oh you got to try Angelo's! It got a high score from David Portnoy. I like the Pizza Press better than Pieology. I did do a video on them a LONG time ago. I like the Tribune as well and like the choices of beer on tap!
I never tried then. Since we were poor college students we ate at Chessmans. It was good at the time but not that great. Now famous Flying Js is in Bridgewater. Top notch South Shore bar pizza!
Great review. We will go to Black Shamrock and try that. I will say as growing up in Detroit, that Detroit pie you reviewed would be unrecognizable in the Motor City. Looked like bread with sauce on top - definitely not an accurate rendition of what I grew up eating. My favorite thin crust on island is actually the Sicilian pizza from California Pizza Kitchen.
Finally, I was waiting for this episode for a couple of days since I saw your insta. I want to try your top 2. Reppetis is on my try list. Been wanting to go for a while and now I can't wait since my DOT physical is done. I can celebrate.
@FoodFiend I'll eventually get to Repttis, I haven't been to your #1 yet and the pizza looks really good. #2 last time I went it was JJ. So I wanna try it as J.
Not a thin pizza kinda guy, I’m more into deep dish Chicagoland pizzas like Uno’s pizza I’ve been to the one in Chicago and had the one that used to be on Kuhio Ave. Good critique video! Hope to see you tonight! Love that Black Label Trading Co.
@adoboi757 yes mentioned it in the video at the time I couldn't go because they were rennovating. I did do a video a long time ago on them when they first opened up. Legit! His wife owns Fat Cheeks too.
Having worked at national franchised pizza chain, can vociferously detest that nothing kills a pizza like soggy dough, no matter if it's thick, thin or anywhere in between. Myself, when ordering pizza, prefer PH hand-tossed. Never had a problem w/soggy pizza. Have never had Papa John's, Little Caesars or Domino's. Growing up, there was Magoo's, Shakey's & personal faves...Pizza Bob's in Haleiwa(current Stonefish Grill) & Marrone's Pizza in Wahiawa(current Salvation Army store) across from Tamura's. May have to Splurge on PH...Soon?!-lol... Mahalo, Misty
Yum! I’ve added some of these places to my list, thank you! When we’re craving an NY slice in Hawaii, our go to spot is usually Spaghettini in Haleiwa😋
Yes I like it simple too, but unfortunately they had pre selected menu items for their pizza so I went with the meat with the onions which was the closest thing to pepperoni.
I usually never send food back, as they will spit or do stuff to it. I just know there's a high chance of it. Once we sent salty fish back because the manager noticed we didn't eat it. We joked and said we don't send food back and she insisted they'd never do such a thing. It came back washed off with water and was the same fish we had with our bite mark on it. 🤣
Brick Fire Tavern looks disappointing and although I've been meaning to try them, I will be passing on them for now. To me, Mad Bene looks the most appealing since I like crunchy thin crust pizzas.
I noticed Black Shamrock pizza was eaten at the restaurant and it came out of the oven pippin' hot, whereas the rest was consumed in the car, which in my opinion may have affected the quality of the pizza. My go to pizza is litter ceasars' pan pepperoni lunch combo or the italian bread pizza in Wahiawa. The Wahiawa location is always consistent, other locations are always hit-and-miss. Thank you for your hard work in making this video for your followers. Kudos!
The Black Shamrock was not the only one eaten in the car...the first and second was in the restaurant. The rest were eaten right away in the parking lot of their establishment so it was hot. The only one not eaten right away that was a short walk to street parking was J Dolan and Pizza Mamo. I got the J Dolan first before Pizza Mamo so you would think it was soggy but it was the second highest rating. So the short walk did not make a difference. Mahalo for watching!
I’m usually not a thick crust pizza fan, however I did like the Detroit style pizza from garibaldis when they were in makai market place. I have not been able to try his pizza at his new location, his hours of operation are inconvenient, sometimes he’s not open during posted times. I disagree with your review of pizza mamo, their Detroit style pizza is equally good if you buy the whole pie, but they are expensive. I didn’t have the bad customer service experience you had so I can see how that affects your review.
Yeah it is all subjective. I think I just don't like Detroit pizza. But I understand if you or others like it because some people dislike thin crust. Yeah the service was terrible. The guy smiles on the news when they feature him but it's a whole different demeanor in person. 🤙
@@FoodFiendI think I know who you’re talking about and I agree lol. He gives off sort of a pompous vibe. I still like their pizza though when I’m in the mood for a thin but not too thin crust. My favorite pizza spots that I like to rotate around are Blackrock, Little G’s, and ili’ili; so my taste is pretty similar to yours haha.
Brick Fire Tavern is way overrated. Considering the price, it’s a horrible deal. J Dolan is fantastic! Their spinach garlic ricotta is amazing. It’s not cheap, but way better than Brick Fire Tavern. Ili’ili Cash n Carry is also very good, especially for the price!
Try Black Shamrock if you like J Dolans. That's the partner that had a falling out when they were JJ Dolans. That was my #1. #2 is J Dolan and #3 is Repettis.
Too much moisture in the toppings can cause sogginess and gummy. That is ultra thin though ( 1st pizza). My opinion is pepperoni is overrated, all it does is makes pizza greasy.

Yeah I'm pizzaed out 🤣 Time for some sushi or something else!
@@FoodFiend lmk, I meet you
If Agostino's opens up again, his pizza was easily by far the best I ever had in my life, and once I had his pizza, I couldn't eat any other pizza here.
The pictures of the pizza looked yummy.
thanks for eating all that pizza my friend bought a thin crust from ceasar pizza the pizza had a good flavor n was tasty
I'm glad you enjoyed your pizza pikakerose. 😊
in thailand now but i love that you keep putting out such great content!
Thanks RandU! Enjoy Thailand! Love that country. 🇹🇭
Food Envy Level 9.7!!!!! Compared to the chain pizza places here your picks looked great👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Mahalo TE! Ik sure you got some killer pie spots there!
Haha about the mochi lady. I've heard many stories about her! The DDD restaurant idea sounds like the perfect solution!
Aloha Misty. Looks like you have some good pizza out there. Mahalo for another great video and your honesty in the reviews
Mahalo Paula! I hope you and your mom are doing well!
@@FoodFiend we put Repetti’s on the list already! Haha! I’ll let you know what we think.
Don't miss that at all 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'd like your (and Do's) thoughts on J Dolan and Black Shamrock. But I've never had a Philly pizza so I'm not sure what that is supposed to be like.
@@FoodFiend for sure. I told him he has some pizza eating to do hahahahaha
Ooooh that's they best! Brick fire ovens...that's why I was disappointed in Brick Fire Tavern. I'd rather get a generic pizza from Bertucci's.
You are fantastic for doing this! Thank you soo much, we've been trying to find a good pie here on Oahu too. Yeah that Detroit pizza place was such a disappointment, can't believe that place is still open 😂
Thanks again!❤❤❤
Taste is subjective so I hope I don't disappoint. But I really loved Black Shamrock, J Dolans and Repetti's. 😊
If you ever visit western or upstate NY, I highly recommend Pasquale's Pizza, they make awesome thin crust pizza.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I miss Harpos Pizza! Someone bring it back!!!
That's good to know that there's pizza you enjoy in CA. 🤙
I think your reviews were spot on, and that's from a basic perspective of what should be expected. Seeing those wet, soggy pizzas reminded me of "National Lampoons vacation" where the dog made shishi on the sandwiches🤐😬
🤣 yeah I don't like soggy or thick pizzas at all. Unless it is deep dish.
A kind of under the radar pizza spot IMO is Arancino. They're known more for their pasta's but their pizza's are on point!
Oh wow! I went there and adore the food. Especially the sea bass and their pastas, but never knew the pizza was good. Thanks for the tip!
🤣 I'm glad you like my commentary. I have sarcastic, dry humor but also truthful about it. I try not to swear but man that guy was an @ss!
@@FoodFiend hey, that’s useful information. Nobody likes to go and spend money to be treated that way. Thank you for always being honest.
I’m not a pizza aficionado by any means, but I do prefer thin crust pizza with proper charring on the underside. That Roman style pizza looked amazing with the visible charring, crispy bits all around. I would put that on my list of restaurants to try next time I’m on Oahu.
Yes it was great and I appreciate the work he does into making fresh cheese. You can really taste the difference!
My favorite places were stellios & village pizza in e. Bridgwater
Awesome! Hope you like it. My ex husband was from Michigan. But I never had a real Detroit pizza. One day!
Finally, I was waiting for this episode for a couple of days since I saw your insta. I want to try your top 2. Reppetis is on my try list. Been wanting to go for a while and now I can't wait since my DOT physical is done. I can celebrate.
Congrats on finishing your DOT exam! Yes Repettis was nice for the price and taste. That was my #3.
@FoodFiend I'll eventually get to Repttis, I haven't been to your #1 yet and the pizza looks really good. #2 last time I went it was JJ. So I wanna try it as J.
Boston's is next level. I usually order no sauce, basil, mushroom, onion
Yeah the sauce gotta go for me. But that's a great solution to ask for no sauce. Or just get the white pie with spinach and garlic. 🤙🍕
I've had Pizzeria Uno before. That's good too. As long as there's lots of cheese and meat I'm happy.
Should try Little G Cafe by Garibaldi’s! It’s off Sheridan st off Keeaumoku. Guy is original from the Bronx, you’ll love it 🤙
@adoboi757 yes mentioned it in the video at the time I couldn't go because they were rennovating.
Are you HPD? Or is that just a rear facing dash cam haha. The 4Runner and the watch got me thinking cop
@@Haoleguy808 I have a front and rear dash cam if I get into an accident. 🤞 hope not though
@@FoodFiend wow thanks for the fast response! Just was curious and couldn’t help but ask! Loved the video btw. Mahalos for being genuine to your craft
Yum! I’ve added some of these places to my list, thank you! When we’re craving an NY slice in Hawaii, our go to spot is usually Spaghettini in Haleiwa😋
Awesome! I hope you try Black Shamrock or J Dolan's!
try Zia in kaneohe best pizza ever
Thanks for the suggestion!
Misty, They only learn by by respectfully returning it so it benefits them to learn how to cook it properly, and benefits you getting a great 🍕 pizza
I never return any food. You will get a "properly" cooked dish with spit and dandruff in it. Trust me.
Another year ?!?!?
I can't go a week w/o a PIZZA.
Yep. Pizza is not a food I eat often or crave. I enjoy it, but in moderation.
Hey Misty, great video! I agree, J Dolan’s pizza is soooo good! Their chicken is pretty good too!
Thanks Dave! I haven't had the chicken but I bet it is good! I did have their calamari and other apps and enjoyed them before. Now I'm hungry LOL
Haha! I got hungry watching your video Misty!!! 😄🙋🏻♂️
love veggies, but on pizza they can make the crust soggy. When lucky it works amazing otherwise, I like to keep it more simple with meat toppings.
Yes I like it simple too, but unfortunately they had pre selected menu items for their pizza so I went with the meat with the onions which was the closest thing to pepperoni.
Little G’s is our favorite! Glad you gave him a shout out!
I like them too! Too bad they were closed during the time I was making this video.
Proof Social Club around the corner of J Dolans has really good pizza. I would say it's comparable to J Dolans.
That's good to know! Thanks for sharing. 🤙
Should have sent that 1st pie back so they know the messed it up
I usually never send food back, as they will spit or do stuff to it.
Yes it was disappointing but the service and pasta was good! The pizza was mid. Try J Dolans and Black Shamrock. Mad Bene was good too.
Try Impossible Pizza on north shore. It's the best!!
Thanks for the suggestion! Looks good.
I would like the Illilii pizza as that crunch sounds like my Mi d of pizza. I like the airy, air pockets in pizzas
One bite everybody knows the rules
Loved harpos pizza back in the day. But nowadays I'd say jj dolans are one of the best.
I agree. If you like J Dolan's try Black Shamrock. I haven't had the pleasure of trying Harpo's.
I really like J.Dolans and Pizza Mamo.
Nice. 😊

Unfortunately, pizza is not my friend anymore.
Oh no!!!! Heartburn?
@@FoodFiend gesture, unfortunately
I don't like Boston's sauce. It tastes more like uncooked tomatoes.
The toppings distribution on that second pizza was not good, very poor attention to detail and little care showed.
Yeah it was all concentrated in the middle. However the taste was good.
