This lick is the ending part of the song ''Scarified''. In the song he keeps exactly the same note sequence transferred in different positions. Simply awesome!!
Tbf its alot easier than the whole step stretches with the same picking pattern. Took me about 6 months of constantly practicing the "easier" one when i was 14 to get the picking down and once you do have it down it can be applied all over the fretboard in other scales
He's a very good teacher, acknowledging that it's difficult but encouraging you at the same time without showing off. He explains the mechanics of the thing as well. The polar opposite of that Swedish dumpling Malmsteen.
Reminds me of Skwisgaar Skwigelf. You're just talking to the guy and he seems real chill, then he just destroys half your brain with some red hot riff, then keeps talking like nothing ever happened.
Mr. Gilbert is one of my most favorite influences from the good ol' late 80's. I used to play drums and now I jam on the guitar and these lessons are incredible!!!! I loved the old Racer X shit. AWESOME!!!
You know what i like about this video? Instead of most peoples instructional DVDs and stuff, which paul has done a ton of, here it looks like HE takes HIS OWN camera just so he can show the world how to be awesome like him.
I´m getting a digidesign mbox2 mini, and then I will show PG licks I have used over the last 9 yrs!!! I will shred PG style, not as fast but anything fast I will play he has taught me! I am using alternate picking thx to him!!!
I finaly got this lick under control today paul , I see how it fits in with my Dm resolve. Also managed to finaly integrate the lick in both places like you show. it's awsome to have a teacher like you paul.
I did at first...then i realized how amazing he was at teaching his skills and then i learned so much that now i can't even think about quitting...it's too fun. Paul Gilbert is easily the best guitarist in the world...his technique is so spot of perfect, and he can teach it to anyone, note for note.
I learned this lick years ago. Honestly, it took me about a year of solid practice to play it well and to be able to incorporate it into playing/solos. Seeing this video after all this years I can safely say it is still not up to the speed and accuracy of Paul. Thanks for giving me something to always strive for!!
how many people use that excuse.. my hands are small..i have half his hand size and i can testify its not a matter of long fingers. its practice. of course he can make bigger stretches..but we dont need guitar olympics.
Well, hand size and shape, strength and agility all make a difference. Certain types of hands just work better for playing guitar, but that doesn't mean it's required.
Message for all! If you have an iphone or iPad get ultimate guitar in the App Store. You can get a tab pro option for like 3$. It's amazing. There's is a song on there called "paul gilbert lick" and it's this identical lick. And you can slow it down a lot. Would highly recommend it
Dudes! At 0:32 he´s playing a F#m7 arpeggio. The notes are F# A C# E (although he doesnt play the F# in the lower octave). This of course also has an A major sound "built in", just like the F# minor pentatonic scale has the A major sound "built in".
a tip for anyone learning this, keep doing it at the sort of speed he plays it when he says "lemme slow it right down for you" (or something like that), and try and have some sort of steady beat (metronome, tapping your foot, whatever) that way it makes more sense in your head. or it did for me, hope it helps
That is one long pinky finger. A true natural talent and backed up with great compositional skills. No point being great at playing if you cannot write anything people want to hear. Otherwise you're just an exercise display.
Yeah, you're right. I knew it had to be a Ibanez. The Iceman and Destroyer look a lot alike from the pickups to the neck. It's just the hook on the lower part that gives it away.
Carlos Cavazo is my favorite guitarist because without him you would've never heard of Cinderella. He wrote all of the band's hits all on his own. Raul Gilbert on the other hand...... I've never heard of him untill a few days ago.
@TheLwliang He's using the neck pickup. He is probably using the Dimarzio Air Norton. It sounds like that. Low, fat and sweet. Very nice for sweeping. :)
The information on how to play is there, I agree with you on that. But remember, the brain can only send impulses to your hands (for the sake of the argument, I will use hands as an example), yet your hands and fingers must be able to receive those impulses and quickly translate them into mechanical movements. For instance reflexes, you may train your brain to react as fast as you want, but your body will be lagging behind if you do not train you body.
Exactly. I too went through the "look at me" phase. Sitting down, using technique to create meaningful songs/melodies is even harder. Especially if you plan to have your own trademark or identity and not just plagiarize. I have studied so many artists over so many styles and it's quite easy to tell who is copying what. Not many can pull-off a unique identity, e.g. Vai
The "Right" notes, as you put it, is whatever sounds good to you. Theory is math, music is passion. Combine the two to become an "expert" of some sort. As long as it sounds good, it sounds good. there is no changing "good". Paul said it himself on the "terrifying Guitar trip" that even simple things are still the things that sound the best.
"I could never do that *insane shredding* unless I could do this first *insane shredding*
THANKS PAUL!
3:56
Man you gotta count your blessings it’s not yngwie at least, lol. Paul is a very strong communicator imo.
When he was born, he decided to be a great guitarist and his fingers begann to grow more than normal.
HAHHAAHAA - BucketHead too . Others like JP and YM have STRONG fingers rather then longing fingers
unfair..this guy has 4 middle finger
LOL
HAHAHHAHAHHAHA
😂😂😂😂
😅
This lick is the ending part of the song ''Scarified''.
In the song he keeps exactly the same note sequence transferred in different positions. Simply awesome!!
2:26 "the left hands not too bad."
I quit
I love that comment. The left hand is ok for you paul, for the rest of us it's a nightmare!
Tbf its alot easier than the whole step stretches with the same picking pattern. Took me about 6 months of constantly practicing the "easier" one when i was 14 to get the picking down and once you do have it down it can be applied all over the fretboard in other scales
I mean he is in a nice little box so its not that bad
He's a very good teacher, acknowledging that it's difficult but encouraging you at the same time without showing off. He explains the mechanics of the thing as well.
The polar opposite of that Swedish dumpling Malmsteen.
This was the first video I ever saw of Paul Gilbert playing. It forever changed the way I practiced guitar.
What sort of exercises would you do?
Jesus Bloody Christ. My fingers hurt just watching this. PG is a frigging legend.
*Plays amazingly fast* "Yeah, I should probably make this simpler so you can understand it better" *Plays even faster than before*
i think paul gilbert is amazing. and i think he is one of the most down-to-earth guitar "virtuosos" atm.
This guy is a step above all the others.
After all these years and im still unable to play this riff 😂
I decided to start playing guitar because I found this video 10 years ago. Thanks, Paul.
Reminds me of Skwisgaar Skwigelf. You're just talking to the guy and he seems real chill, then he just destroys half your brain with some red hot riff, then keeps talking like nothing ever happened.

yes, it's him
"I should probably show you something a little simpler" LOL..... Ya ok
His hands are just so big with long fingers. His technique really benefits from this. He just has reach that a lot of us cannot even dream of having.
Holy Jesus this guy is super fast and more importantly super clean! Gonna try this later but ...fuck. This guy is ridiculous.
Damn... That was fast. If I could play just one of those licks just at half speed I would be very pleased. You! Mr. Gilbert is really amazing.
How is your playing 14 years later?
"The picking is, uh, yeeahh"
Lol, this guy is amazing.
THis is a class PG lick
I cant get enough of Gilbert!!!!!!!
-Yord
He's soo good at explaining this stuff!! I haven't found anyone as good as him by far.
I can't believe I can actually play this! :O Paul Gilbert = Best teacher ever!!
Whats the notes he's playing on the second riff in the 5th position?
paul gilbert is the best guitar teacher
he explains things clearly and demonstrates them well
and he is also a very nice guy:)
Mr. Gilbert is one of my most favorite influences from the good ol' late 80's. I used to play drums and now I jam on the guitar and these lessons are incredible!!!! I loved the old Racer X shit. AWESOME!!!

Paul Gilbert = best youtube teacher ever!
He makes that look WAY too easy
another thing I love about Paul is that he doesn't get bogged down in the theory of guitar, he just plays; and he plays dang well.
paul gilbert never makes mistakes
Genecalypse 3:31 mistake. He is human
His guitar exercises are like a guitarists equivalent of sit ups. Great teacher. All subbed
how many people use that excuse.. my hands are small..i have half his hand size and i can testify its not a matter of long fingers. its practice. of course he can make bigger stretches..but we dont need guitar olympics.
you must have small hands and, well... our condolences.
Well, hand size and shape, strength and agility all make a difference. Certain types of hands just work better for playing guitar, but that doesn't mean it's required.
Paul have been doing this for more than 25 years..i think he is a true legend
hes showing the lick in great detail. makes it very easy to make a tab.

Paul Gilbert is the only man on earth who can flip people off using any finger!
no wonder
LOOK AT THOSE FINGERS!!!!!! one of the best guitarist of all times!

Watching this at internet Caffe when i was high school. Comeback after 17 years ago 😱😱😱
This video just made me realize how much I suck. I think I will hang up my guitar and look at buying a drum set. Paul Gilbert, You are the man! LOL
he is the best guitarist ever seen and he is a great teacher too ^^
Paul Gilbert what else ?
it took me like FIVE HOURS to learn that dadgum lick!
i'm not sure if there's anyone out the that's as much of a guitar beast as he is
That is one long pinky finger.
A true natural talent and backed up with great compositional skills. No point being great at playing if you cannot write anything people want to hear. Otherwise you're just an exercise display.
I've learned a lot from him. He makes things a lot simpler.
my favourite PG guitar lesson.......this lick helped me alot!!!...:D
paul gilbert is one of the few "shredders" i actually like because he cares enough to not make it sound like shit
I love his signature lick... I put that video on my MP3 to hear
GIT is where he taught and still does from time to time.
Hands down to one of the best alternate economy pickers
most of are us are watching this with no hope of learning it, buts man its still cool to watch
Paul Gilbert is the best of the shredders out there, not question about it. Totally insane
Yeah, you're right. I knew it had to be a Ibanez. The Iceman and Destroyer look a lot alike from the pickups to the neck. It's just the hook on the lower part that gives it away.
dude that riff is so fucking sick man
He currently uses the Marshall Vintage Modern 2266c combo amps, but did use Laney amps for along time.
Oh poor Paul Gilbert! He can't help but be badass!!
Carlos Cavazo is my favorite guitarist because without him you would've never heard of Cinderella. He wrote all of the band's hits all on his own.
Raul Gilbert on the other hand...... I've never heard of him untill a few days ago.
This string skipping arpeggios are from the song Scarified. Just look for the Scarified tab on the net, simple.
@xMrBumpyx agreed.....coffeee....and cigarettes.......he is very humble to show us what he is doing...
for those who are learning the scarified(such as me :) ), this lesson is very valuable. thanks.
Wow, ‘17’ years ago!
@TheLwliang He's using the neck pickup. He is probably using the Dimarzio Air Norton. It sounds like that. Low, fat and sweet. Very nice for sweeping. :)
His fingers, guitar, amp, pickups, and his strings.

the way he picks almost looks like PG himself, nice work on the vid man.
Fuck me his fingers are like lasers. So fucking accurate and swift it's unreal.
Paul has scarified me for 20 years.
@Cymbaline713 The string skipping lick is on the outro to Scarified, yes. Although on the studio recording it's played a semitone lower.
Exactly. I too went through the "look at me" phase. Sitting down, using technique to create meaningful songs/melodies is even harder. Especially if you plan to have your own trademark or identity and not just plagiarize.

see a duel of paul gilbert and buckethead can be something completely INSANE, when i see that i can rest in peace. xD

1,000th rating. Wow Paul Gilbert is fucking awesome. He's my third fave guitarist. Second being Randy Rhoads and first being Marty Friedman.
paul gilbert gives the best lessons ever!!!
"The left hands not too bad on that"

Fucking love this guy, best guitarist, and teacher!
Gotta love hove he can have a casual conversation while shredding away.
so thats how he does it.flawless!
His pinky is as long as all of his other fingers! No wonder he can do those crazy streches.
lol i love how he sees the lower lick as easy
this guy has like crab legs for fingers. Ridiculous. He is amazing, and it looks so effortless.
