Gilbert is the man, ok he's actually the Godzilla of guitar... Awesome job Dave, thanks for all the ideas, so much stuff to learn. You're hitting all my influences, favorite guitarists, nerd allegiances, we could possibly be long lost brothers 🎸
Oh boy! this has to be the biggest weapon in my arsenal. I've followed Paul and his lessons for a very long time. He has some of the most amazing scale sequences and short runs that'll help you build your Vocab. But this lesson opened so many possibilities to connect all those little licks and runs that sometimes leads to nowhere. Thanks a lot!!!
I totally agree and thank you! He's such a great player, but then he's also an OUTSTANDING teacher. He can explain complex ideas and arrangements but in a totally easy-to-understand way. I've always found Gilbert, Steve Morse, Scott Henderson, and John Petrucci as great musicians, but they're also great teachers too!
I remember when I was just starting to play guitar and I stumbled across this live solo of Paul Gilbert, I was not ready for it haha , it blew my mind ( In the old days of youtube most of the time the video had the audio blocked due to copyright infringement (?) ) thanks for the lesson and for reminding me of this great performance and licks , definitely gonna try to learn them !
Love your channel David. Great lessons of some brilliant licks. I'm a big Paul Gilbert and Blues Saraceno fan myself, so its brilliant watching and listening to your breakdowns.
I met Paul backstage at Hammersmith, London, what a gent! Thanks for working this out I never quite got it (in the days before good computer audio!) many thanks!!!
Love the Paul Gilbert tips thank you. A little trivia here, I was a recording engineer at a little studio in Virginia Beach back in the mid 80' called Magic Traxx when Scott Travis came in to record a demo I believe he was taking with him to LA just before he joined up with Racer X. It was just him playing drums. I was alone with Scott that night. When he began to play, I knew he only needed his big break, he sure got it! Another piece about Scott Travis, he didn't just want to be a great drummer, he wanted to be the drummer for Judas Priest... I later did live sound for Eddie Schultz, Scott's childhood friend. They grew up practicing drums together and it was pretty cool that they both played very similarly.
So awesome Dave. Ive been wanting a lesson of some sort on this great solo that Paul Gilbert does live. You nailed it brother. Thanks so much. your playing sir is un matched to all the pro players I see on youtube. fantastic lesson!!
Wow, great Lesson. Paul Gilbert has a been influence on playing and I always use his first video as a warm-up for my picking hand. I feel like he has been my teacher for years lol. Great Job Dave B
hey David..totally agree with you about PG. His playing, humour and humility make him one of rocks finest humans. I love this channel mate....the format, with the 3 licks etc..is simple and well explained and suits those of us who've been around and played a while. Its excellent, in the sense that it's inspired me to keep learning.....especially from the players I wouldn't usually listen to. So thank you mate, for being a great player and teacher. Keep up the good work! Cheers
i'll never have a long enough pinky to do these but i love the last one and have tried it super slow and my hand strength is weak considering my years of not practicing or trying new things. My gosh i love those licks though and i'll never get it but they will still help my playing and strength trying. Great video and Paul is incredible as yourself is because you can play his licks.
My buddy (and guitar teacher at that time) went to GIT in Hollywood, California and Paul Gilbert was one of his classmates. Mr. Big was opening up for Rush at the Miami arena. Paul had left a couple of tickets for us and while Rush was on stage we worked our way to the front and passed a note to one of the security guys standing right in front of Geddy Lee. We wanted him to bring the note to Paul and he did and the next thing you know he’s telling us to climb over the wall and come back stage! We missed most of Rush, but hung out with Paul and Billy Sheehan, eating fruit and cold cuts. They were laughing and telling stories about their days at the Guitar Institue and crazy stuff they did. What a blast!
10:35 for the tabs. Don't be like me and rewind half a dozen times trying to get the notes. Also, all three licks are ALL outside picking. ie. if the next note is down a string, upstroke, and vice-versa. Great warm-up.
So informative and helpful. Paul Gilbert is just too good. Awesome lesson brewster 👍👍👍👍👍👍. Marty Friedman is highly underrated and overdue. You'll be doing us a huge favor . Like Paul, Marty is also one of the most down to earth shredders from the 80's(Shrapnel Records stablemates). Will be anxiously waiting for it dude. More power to you buddy
Thanks for watching and for this comment. I haven't created a Marty Friedman lesson for LNL yet, mainly because I just had a Marty Friedman lesson published in Guitar Player Magazine. Check out their August 2019 issue for more or you can also find it on their website (with audio tracks). I'll create a Marty-inspired video soon enough. Thanks again! : )
Dave....the licks ARE fantastic....but if you're really trying to understand...we MUST show Them in context..how the lick ties in with the key center...in order to conceptualize the information
Suggestion for the folks trying this. Look at the thumb (especially in lick #2). A loose grip will give you the speed. Don't grip tight or you'll struggle.
Some of the older videos have tab on screen, but I've started offering PDF files with the tabs for Patreon supporters. Sorry bro, but I had to give something back to the folks that are helping to keep the lights on around here. : )
@@LateNightLessons Yeah, there was some tab in that lesson and I thought you skipped tabbing that part because it's such a common run. I understand about the Patreon thing. Thanks for keeping the free vids up for us. :)
Hey! The tabs for most of the lessons on this channel can be found on the LNL Patreon page. There are 80+ notation/tab PDF/Guitar Pro files listed/shared in addition to the exclusive instructional method I released last August 'Fretboard Fitness' - and all of the files can be accessed/saved for only $5 a month. Check out the link below for more information. Thanks and ROCK ON! www.patreon.com/latenightlessons
That is a tough lick! I highly recommend practicing the basic arpeggio fingering first and once that becomes comfortable, then you can begin applying Gilbert's tricky sequence to it. Muting the strings and keeping things dampened/muted is really important (as I mentioned in the video), as you're going to be shifting and skipping around the strings so much, it's really easy to lose control of the strings as you play through it. Just start slow and gain control of the fingering movements and the next thing you know you'll be shredding this idea all day. Thanks for watching, good luck, and ROCK ON! : )

You managed to express the essence of Paul Gilbert as a person and the influences on him as a player - NICE! Nailed it.

I've gone through a few of your lessons now and find them really good - laid back and relaxed as well as very informative. Keep it up.
That's awesome and great to hear!
Thank you so much and stay tuned for more lessons and material.

Man, that is humbling...Dave you are the man. My fav instructor. So humble and unassuming, soft spoken. Stay thirsty~
The Paul Gilbert string skipping arpeggio - first time I saw that live video my jaw was on the floor.
i tried learning that lick 15 years ago and i couldn't do it clean or fast but it taught me string skipping like no other

Excellent lesson--I love it. Hope to find a Reb Beach lesson on your site.
I found the Reb Beach lesson. Thank you :)
Awesome - and thank YOU!
: )
This is a great lesson.
One of the hardest parts for me is trying to decide which way to pick the last lick
Great vid man Paul is one the best for sure and now I know I have been playing lick 3 the wrong way thanks for this video lesson 🤟
Awesome thanks for this video 💯
Thank you sooo much !! You really helped me out alot man.. been dying to learn these licks thanks for stretching my game

Great job, thanks dude!
Thank you!

Your the best around! Dude
Subscribed: good content/good bloke.👍🏻🎸
Paul Gilbert the king of the pinky finger.
Oh Yeah, you gotta love that! ..... Here's a suggestion.... 7 Monster Riffs from Paul Gilbert!
Good stuff man!
I was never into Mr Big back in the day. But I recently watched the series where he was just talking and playing. He seems like a pretty cool cat.
Also will it be possible for you to explain your tone setup someday.😀
Actually Dave, that would be a Cool Late night lesson idea!!!!
I love these licks, but I’m pretty sure Paul uses more hammer ons for the pentatonic ones. Gives it an even more liquid sound
Muchas gracias por poner "Tab"!.
Wow!
Thank you!
: )
Love Racer X!!!!
LATE NIGHT LESSONS< any Paul Gilbert Racer X licks phrasing you can think of to add to your video?
Could you make another vid on gilbert and buckethead? Btw do you have any tips on unlocking the fretboard
You missed one note from the first lick, and it's the note that makes it more difficult and more interesting.
The 10th note in that lick is c# not f#

You wouldn't by chance have tablature for that sweet run starting at 6:28? Sometimes I feel I'm "Chop Challenged". :)
