. It is certainly true that the lack of family importance has damaged our society in a myriad of ways that are changing our lives. Education is no longer important. Discipline in schools is a serious problem. If family structure with a father at the head, providing order and cohesion, no longer exists, how can schools provide the order needed to educate? No respect for authority of family or God. Children no longer learn many of society's organizing principles in school. There is a major disconnect between our institutions: The family is disintegrating; schools are disintegrating; community is disintegrating; religion is disintegrating; law and order are disintegrating. We no longer have values that unite us in common goals and understanding. Only individuals, unguided by any transcendent, organizing authority, matter. Atomization causes free floating lost people who fear each other.
That's what you get if generations of 'christians' raise only the religious and kick out and banish any other individual that doesn't correspond with the religious template. What did you think was going to happen? Family importance? If God than God. Family can't come first if God does. Now God just became a cause/excuse not to raise your children. Proud son of Kain right? Don't even know he had spawn or not. Cause if he didn't, we're all Able's children anyway huh? 😂 So family disintegration leads to more and bigger family disintegration? Who would have thought!?! What's my family value if my family didn't value me cause I can't find Gods worth? That's cool. Time's on my side. I enjoy the hell on earth they're already in. And will continue to do so. Parentsss.. used to be a time I'd have preferred to kill them. Maybe even just for creating me only and shoving off all responsibility to a fairy tale.. I’m a 65 year old man, and late in life, I had my fill of the church of me and cafeteria Christology of evangelical Protestantism, I converted to Eastern Orthodoxy, and I never looked back. I can count my regrets in life on one hand. Chief among those is not converting sooner in life.
What do you mean by Eastern Orthodoxy? I grew up in the Armenian Orthodox church. Also, what is it about the Eastern Orthodox church that you favor over the Protestant church?
No one "loses" God. They didn't have God a second ago and forgot where they put him down. No. People discard God. I did. I think about going back everyday, of reacquainting myself with things spiritual. But I give myself excuse after excuse to continue on my path to hell, telling myself there's time left to accept God. There isn't, we all need to get right with the lord today because there is no tomorrow. There is only today.
This is a brilliant and insightful lecture. Clearly, within the mainline Protestant denominations the problem has been capitulation of their stance on traditional moral issues. This has facilitated massive congregational losses and turned them into cheerleaders for the Sexual Revolution. Now Evangelicals are tempted to follow the mainline denomination with their own brand of capitulation. Increasingly, Evangelical pastors are fearful of preaching on traditional moral issues because they think that such preaching is too divisive and "political." They seem to fail to notice that the New Testament integrates repentance from sin and a transformed (moral) life with true faith in Christ. Put another way, Evangelical pastors are failing to teach sanctification and pretending that Christ merely wants to kindly justify us for heaven. It is a toothless gospel.
it's not a toothless Gospel, but a false one - deriving from the fundamental error of protestantism: justification is real insofar one converts - and, as it is obvuious, that error is due to a bigoted position toward Catholicity
Divisive...political? Have you not heard of Donald Trump? It's not remaining silent on moral issues that is driving congregants away, but the hypocrisy of selective silence: denouncing some and ignoring others. Hence, the see-no-evil appalling silence of Jan. 6.
It's no gospel at all. The Christian message will always arouse controversy and hostilities because it is a fight between good and evil. People who will yoke themselves to a moral and spiritual discipline, and those who seek to make excuses for self seeking behavior.

I am not formally educated in these matters. I grew up in a Christian household in Australia in the 60s. This was a time of great flux in the western world when social morays and ideas changed. Formalities were dropped and people became more casual. People began wearing denim. It was also a time when telecommunications expanded. Ideas that had largely remained with minorities could now spread to the broader community. To this point my parents and grandparents generations did not seem to have access to information that would question their faith. They were working class people and were not taught science at school. I noticed a noticeable decline in Christianity from this time.

Agreed, there is a decline in traditional expressed religious practice but an excelleration of hunger for a knowledge of and relationship with God. Those are two different things.
Believe me it is this hunger for knowledge which has led to the very abandonment of religious belief at the centre of this presentation. The road to atesiesm is littered with Bibles that have been read from cover to cover, so keep reading.
Why do you suppose that what is called 'religion' has anything to do with the mister god fantasy when it is plainly concerned with those manifestations of the emotional function, namely liking and disliking that dreaming machines, or me(human beings) call morals or ethics which are no more than relative subjective and temporary likes and dislikes or by-products of the emotional function to which dreaming machines are such slaves?
All he does is whine about how he dislikes something or other as if his relative subjective and temporary manifestations of the emotional function are relevant to anything of particular significance to anyone. Im listening to this lady from Poland. The poor and less educated people are more believers of God over here than those in cities who are mocking the western lifestyle. Same thing in Hungary: there is a serious culture built on "poor and honest and hardworking" characters. This character is featured in many literature for kids, teens and young adults and in a way tge current government is promoting it too. This kind of a cultural element doest exist in our societies. The west is not catholic - its more jewish or protestant. The difference is obvious.
People follow incentives - this presentation did not address the trend in atomisation in terms of affordability. It's increasingly easy to decide to remove yourself from your family when the government will back you up financially. Easy to make decisions (even bad ones) when someone else is footing the bill. La familia! Divorce. Single motherhood, absent father. divorce: lonely, drifting, hurt, angry. Single parent: angry, lonely, confused, hurt. Maybe a rebound coming of hope?
Hi Mary. I found your presentation defensive and holding out little hope. I am only a beginning theology student at 71 and it is pretty obvious that nothing about civilization is set in concrete. Like all civilizations, even the most impressive, they all eventually come and go. Despite our glorious cultural heritage that we live and revel in and relish, what makes you think ours is the most special and eternal? Regarding what F Nietzche said about traditional faith's death of God he also talked about the lantern falling to the ground and snuffed out... the light of the Age of Reason.extinguished... and our pressing need to find meaning and purpose and significance elsewhere just before the 2 great world wars. He went insane (? syphilis) before he expounded. Possibly you could say that the times of Martin Luther crystalized this cultural/religious fragmentation of the West. Luther put the responsibility of one's ultimate destiny in one's own hands instead of the divine guidance of the church.... justification by faith & sola scriptura. Catholic, Protestant or not, we are all heirs to this more individual, personal and now increasingly irreligious world.
I am 70. I have studied and looked into these things a good part of life. Why? Since I was young,I wanted to know how we got to where we are at. You got a snapshot view, that is not all that inaccurate. When I embarked to study civilization, we study all of them. So, because our civilization, is in devolution. A passing away of older understandings to newer ones. I'll just call it Neo western civilization, with all the subsets under it. Why Neo? Because it is morfing into something other and new. Good comment.
Also, many have learned to think for themselves, and are less likely to be taken in, by someone's opinion that has-been deified in social opinion. In the church or out of it. It violates intrinsic values of self understanding in.the things they confront it in life. I like discussions that turn into a new understanding of things; even when it's the same old thing. The "Now I know why, " moments. Or how about I guess didnt know why after all. For many its they didn't have the last word and their extrinsic pride is ruffled. After living in the US for 40 years, I went back and found peace and serenity in my religion of birth, Islam. I arrived in the US at the age of 19 and very quickly became areligious and secularized. Money, sex, and other forms of hedonism was all I lived for. But as the years went by, I saw the meaninglessness of it all. This hit me around the age of 50. I saw the destruction of the family in the West due to rabid feminism. Ironically, Muslims born andcraised in the West are not immune to the "effects" of the present Western themes. Divorce among Western Muslims had risen sharply as well as domestic violence and other issues.

I was a little surprised that the theses presented seemed to be grounded mainly upon science, including social science, rather than philosophical reflection. The famous Nietzsche words from Thus Spoke Zarathustra don't refer only to the decline of belief in the Christian, or more broadly Abrahamic, deity, but also to the decline of classical metaphysics. It was Kant who seems to have landed decisive blows against metaphysics 100 years before Nietzsche, but the long dying wails of classical philosophy continued well into the 20th century. I think the discussion could have gone further by focussing on the decisive German figures concerning secularisation - Nietzsche, Weber and Heidegger. For my part, I cannot see there can be any doubt that the power and insight of science in relation to the world of matter and extension has eroded interest in and passion for classical teachings: including both classical philosophy and humanities, and also religious teachings. I was happily surprised to hear your comments about both waning and waxing in religiosity over the last 150 years or so, but I still think there is an overall downward slide. Although I am not without hope, I think a turn for the good is more likely to arise from a major world crisis bigger and more deadly than, say, the COVID episode. Apart from the above, your attention to the decline of the family, the decline of fertility and of mental health as causes looks to be correct, but I see these kinds of things as manifestations of the deterioration of the Zeitgeist as noted so poignantly by Nietzsche, Weber, Heidegger et al.

Why has the west embraced secularism? Well, it's precisely because the west has come out of Christianity that birthed the idea of secularism. I listened to a wonderful 7 part series about 10 years ago named The Myth of the Secular hosted by David Caylee from a show called Ideas by CBC radio and according to many thinkers like Dr. Charles Taylor and John Milbank who were invited to participate; secularism IS a Christian idea introduced by Christ himself (Mt 22:15-22) where we should render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and to God that which is God's. No one had ever separated church and state like that before. Every society at the time had a belief in a god or a spirit world. Most civilized societies had a ruler who was also considered a god at the same time. There was no such thing as atheism, or a notion that people can separate their own laws from a political or religious authority. Religion (or belief) was a given and intertwined in daily life. It wasn't ever even questioned. The Christian idea of an alternate Kingdom in but apart from this world enabled secularism to be born. This is why democracy came from the west and not from any other culture because the idea of democracy comes out of secularism which comes out the western history of Christendom. So from what I understand, it's not secularism that is the enemy. Jesus was just stating the reality of life on earth. This stating the fact of secularism, was a freeing of the people to realize they can choose, and that Caesar and God are separate - this idea that fermented during the European so-called dark ages brought the Enlightenment to follow. So why are we falling away from God? It's when the Church, Christ's followers are NOT being the light of the world and salt of the Earth so that they can show the world the Way or when the Church becomes like the world when people then become disillusioned by Christianity. It's the failures and hypocrisy of the Church and the church leaders to follow and imitate Christ that is the enemy such as when the Popes and Knights Templar embraced other gods like the god of Money by allowing usury or the present day spiritual affair between so-called Christians and Capitalism opening the way to loose morals and the weakening of the family. Secularism does not cause atheism. Abusive and phony Christians do. The west has long ago forsaken the Judeo-Christian God and the Church has wandered away from Christ, but Christ will purify and cleanse the Church his Bride who are the true faithful believers. He will call them out from the false believers (seen by God as a harlot who rides the beast of the market system in Rev 17-19 and who take its mark to buy and sell). He will separate the sheep from the goats and his Church will never fail. The seductions of money and sex, rebellion and self-reliance are real in this world but Christians do not need to fear secularism if they trust and stay faithful to their Saviour.
You make a category mistake to hold Christian theism out as nothing more than an idea/belief/conviction/worldview! It is absolutely NOTHING of the sort! Viz Rom 9:16, Tit 3:5-7, 2Tim 1:9-10, Jhn 1:13, Luk 18:26-27, Eph 2:8-9… and then look at Mat 7:21!
Oh! Exactly the lecture I have been looking for! I really wanted to understand how we, including myself, never got attached to the divine, apart from the sexual offenses and hypocrisy of actual church leaders and clear political bias!
*By _definition* " we" not only *includes* you, it *means* you and your immediate interlocutor, thus for al practical purposes when you use "we" you are saying *I*. Is it not plain to you that if by" the divine" you seek to identify the idea of god, that idea is self-evidently man made or invented by men(human beings), some of whom l seem also to have invented a mister god, which has to be the ultimate fantasm. God as a cognate of the general context in which beings find themselves, perfectly rational or reasonable, but *Mister* god, can only be a projection from or of some super me, me, me, or as the fantasy appears to run: " Not only am I made in the image of something, that image is of me, me, me, which clearly fits the definition of god as that which is more important to any given being than anything else at any given moment. Me, me, me , and its like and dislikes(emotional function) is clearly the god of most-if not all men(human beings, who unconsciously suppose that the context in which they find themselves is an image of the monster me, me, me, me-which is their god or that which is more important to them than anything else at any given moment, given that seemingly they not only suppose their mister god to have a beard and moustache exactly like theirs, but also a pen in his left vest pocket, and their likes and dislikes and petty judgements just as they do and elaborate versions of their purely subjective, relative an temporary likes and dislikes which they call "morals" and they seem to suppose that mister god also goes in for their famous and invented so-called " morals". Seemingly mister god as an old Jew was dreamed up in Babylon and was the by-product of the wiseacrings of sundry supposedly learned beings kidnapped by a Person king as part of his pursuit of getting something for nothing, seemingly at a time when Persia was also known as the land of the finest or Aryans, which it is to this day. It is a real puzzle; whence did men get the god idea if they did not come to it of their own motion? Some of them seem to suppose that that product of their psyche that they call religion has something to do with the mister god fantasy, when in reality it reality religion is almost exclusively concerned with that by-product of their emotional function that they dignify with the fancy word " morals" or occasionally what they call' " ethics", and seeking to impose their purely subjective relative and temporary likes and dislikes or morals/ethics on others they seek to justify and bolster their bullying by attributing their famous morals/ethics to a certain mister god who they suppose to be just as nasty petty judgmental and bullying as * they* are, which is true enough since their mister god is plainly a projection of their me, me, me, which is more important to them than anything else at any given moment, and is thus their god, which runs in tandem with their other god which one sage called "self-calming". What will men*Not* do in the name of those two " gods"?
God Himself instituted three institutions : (1) Family; (2) Church (3) Government, if which family is the basic unit. Without families there is no basis for church or government.
My former United Methodist pastor blamed it on the Catholic sex scandals. At least in the U.S., all religions, from Christianity to Judiasm to Hinduism to Islam, has seen some decline in service attendance and participation within a congregation. Seeing priests, as well as other clergy, taking advantage of minors, has turned people off of organized religion. Who needs a member of the clergy explaining the Torah, the Bible, the Koran, etc., while being a hypocrite, when I can watch something on You Tube or Google a theological question while supporting non-religious charities that also do good works.
Jesus was not a Christian. He did not have a religion as such nor He came to this world to introduce a religion. Describing the purpose of His coming into this world, He said "I came to give you life, and life more anundantly". That life He mentioned is not religion. The one who is a follower or a disciple of Christ does not have any religion but a relationship. So, it is quite clear, why, as this lady says there is a steady decline of Christians in Australia or any part of the world. Jesus said "Many are called, but a few are chosen". So the answer to her question which she is describing here by wasting the precious time if all those listened to her is quite simple.
I notice a technique here. She will take a statistic (Like for instance, 57% of lapsed Catholic Italians cite “social issues” as their reason for leaving the Church. She then jumps to the conclusion that the one social issue upon which they disagree is sexuality. That is not necessarily so. Many Canadians turned away from Catholicism because of the Church’s systematic sexual abuse of children over a period of decades. And it wasn’t just the perpetrators who were the problem; it was the Church fathers who enabled the criminal action. Are we to assume that millennials are not seeing the irony of pastors in Crystal Cathedrals preaching the virtues of poverty? Are we to assume that there was no correlation between the coercive dominance of the Church during the Duplessis era in Quebec and Quebec’s turning away from Catholicism in the Quiet Revolution?

To fellow travellers Dan. 2:31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. 37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Dan. 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. _this Son of Man is Jesus_ Matt. 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: :18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
The speaker didn’t get to the root of the problem: our technological advances have made obsolete our traditional religious mental constructs. Ask a person standing on earth to point to heaven, and he points to the sky. Ask a person standing on the moon looking at earth to point to heaven, and he doesn’t know where to point. If we don’t know WHERE heaven is, we loose faith in heaven. Similarly, the notion of god being a “being” no longer makes sense. The solution: come up with new mental constructs that DO make sense even in our current scientific existence. God is EVERYTHING to me. Here’s the definition I use: GOD IS A FACET OF THE UNIVERSE. AND IF YOU TUNE IN TO THAT FACET AND COOPERATE WITH IT, YOUR LIFE WILL BE MUCH, MUCH BETTER THAN IF YOU DON’T. God speaks to me directly in my mind (no book nor religion needed). When I get calm and still and peaceful, I get messages in my mind that tell me what to do next. I don’t need a savior because I’m on the pay as you go plan. When I sin, I pay for my sin by having to endure the pain of appropriate guilt, and the hassles of having to make it right. The same is true with trophies and praise. I don’t need them because the instant I do something I know is right and good, I receive my award in the good feelings i get from doing that thing. I don’t know what will happen to me when my mortal body dies, but I’m not worried about it because I was fine before I was conceived and I figure I’ll also be fine after my earth life is completed. The only reasons to worry about what happens to me after I die is because of things other HUMAN BEINGS have told me about that. And I neither trust nor follow any human being or beings. I follow (and trust) GOD.

Observations from sexual life and demography are key factors : more is lower and the easiness of finding/changing partners devaluate humanity. But science and rationalizations are as well important (at parity with the first two mentioned). And, surely, on many levels, one can say :"that pill is a kill".
This guy "Jesus/God" was a myth. First written about - about 300-years after he was supposed to be on earth. All these stories about what he actually said are heresy, handed down by word of mouth over 10-generations(!) I lived for 12 years in China and found it a much happier place than England where I grew up. I think a main factor was the importance of the family and the fact that they continue to value the family. You might not know it from the western propaganda about China but most Chinese have a strong streak of Buddhism in them and their society is deeply permeated by the triple thread of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. These traditions survive because they are all from their origins extremely rational, there is nothing in them that is incompatible with modern science or psychology. I have the impression that Christianity lost a lot of ground in the 20th Century because many of the fundamentals, Jesus being the son of God, the virgin birth, transsubstantiation, holy trinity and suchlike doctrines as well as the doctrine of a conscious judgemental supreme being, became impossible for modern educated people to believe. Since Christianity was intimately tied up with the traditions of courtship and monogamous marriage in our culture, marriage went out of fashion. And actually it's the dissolution of the conventions which allowed for the graceful docking of the male and female of the species (a process more fraught than the docking of capsules in space) which led to the fragmentation of the family and the rise of the omnicopulant freelance gonadista. And it was that fragmentation which led to "cancel culture" because people became frustrated, frightened and full of hate. Stuffing people back into an intellectually ridiculous medieval religion can't be the answer, though, and I don't believe it would ever work.

Read The Return of the God Hypothesis.
You contradict yourself. You praise the Chinese for sticking to their old religious beliefs and traditional ways of life. But you throw away your own traditions and the religion of your fathers in the West and call it "old and medieval" while conveniently ignoring the fact that the Chinese Budhism you are praising hastens back to thousands of years before the Christian faith and practice you are dismissing and branding as being "anti-science". That's inconsistent. If you put some effort into studying Christianity with an open mind, perhaps you wouldn't be too quick to trifle with it as you seem to do now.

People follow incentives - this presentation did not address the trend in atomisation in terms of affordability. It's increasingly easy to decide to remove yourself from your family when the government will back you up financially. Easy to make decisions (even bad ones) when someone else is footing the bill. Churches passively accept family breakup and so do governments. This will of course reverse once welfarism and monetary excesses become unable to be borne any more.

I'd very much like to hear Mary Eberstadt talk about Leo Tolstoy. He didn't turn away from God but rather the corrupt Russian Orthodox Church. What the hell is going on with it today? (My philosophy professor Francis Meyers at the University of Denver in 1967 taught me it is very necessary to have "hell" in that expression for it to have the necessary punch.)
The Orthodox Church is the fastest growing Christian tradition-if not religion in general-in the Western world. More than meets the eye.
La familia!
But Christ made the church not an organization, but an organism, whose allegiance is to Another World.
Atheism rejects that world.
There are all kinds of different errors in thinking people can make with a little bit of knowleeddge, but not enough. Easy don't patronize people, by thinking they always need help from you. Like Jobs comforters. When I first read that I thought, boy it a sounded good. But then the climax. Nobody knows yet all they need to know. People don't like thinking their to stupid before others. Most get benefits for being members of the Church. But the benefits are reduced or completely cut off, if the attendance at the Church service is not regular.
As the waning of the Victorian age saw the emergence of Darwinism and Marxism, faith foundations were shaken. The Bible was not something to be taken seriously any longer. Then, of course, the 20th century wars in "Christian" Europe.

Jesus plainly said, "he who loves Me OBEYS Me". Maybe they weren't around long enough to truly know God better and grow to love him DEEPLY.
There are MANY factors and circumstances that can affect our decision making. It's not a simple matter.
How's that godlessness working out for you? Happy? Fulfilled? Or bitter?

My former United Methodist pastor blamed it on the Catholic sex scandals.
At least in the U.S., all religions, from Christianity to Judiasm to Hinduism to Islam, has seen some decline in service attendance and participation within a congregation.
Seeing priests, as well as other clergy, taking advantage of minors, has turned people off of organized religion.
Who needs a member of the clergy explaining the Torah, the Bible, the Koran, etc., while being a hypocrite, when I can watch something on You Tube or Google a theological question while supporting non-religious charities that also do good works.
🗣“I am not even an atheist so much as an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth! ― Christopher Hitchens

Dan.

Matt. 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
:18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

To save me watching this, is the jist education and the progress of critical thinking?

I lived for 12 years in China and found it a much happier place than England where I grew up.
That's why they murdered thousands of young students who wanted freedom at Tianhamen. Educated Nincompoop

I shouldn't need to point out that incredulity is not a valid argument. Many educated people believe in Creation, and the divinely-directed origin life and species, and their tribe is in fact growing; the alternatives are simply no longer tenable because Science.
