On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 9-6-19.
We're looking at a 1963 Plymouth Savoy in Dark Blue Paint. This car has the factory Max Wedge 426 CI V8 engine producing over 400 HP.
The car's Owner is Tom Wolters. Tom’s had the car since 2008. Tom shares this car spent many years stored away, then was restored, and after the restoration came up for sale and that’s when he was able to purchase it.
    ENJOY!

Nice to see a Max Wedge Plymouth featured here. My dad raced three of them (a '62 Savoy 413, a '63 Savoy 426, and a '63 Belvedere 426) for Al Roberts Plymouth in 1962-63, then bought a new '63 Savoy 426 aluminum front end super stocker late in the 1963 model year. He raced it with a good amount of success at local, divisional, and even national events until selling it in 1969 to take care of my mom's long recovery from two strokes she suffered that year. I bought it back 48 years later. I've been racing my own Max Wedge cars in NHRA stock classes since the mid seventies, and still am racing the Max Wedge/4 speed '64 Dodge that my dad and I built in 1974. Never thought that I would have his Plymouth together with my Dodge, but they are now. His Plymouth is far too nice and original) to mess it up in order to comply with today's rules, so it stays in the shop...getting driven on short trips on uncrowded streets in the neighborhood 2-3 times a month.

@@loucostabile What brings most memories back is having his Plymouth (and some of the trophies including two from national event wins) here at my home. Also my NHRA B/S class Dodge that he helped me with from 1974 to 1976 (and I still race). He died in 1976 at 50, but I still think of him daily.

425 gross HP is 350 Net HP. Today we measure Net. You boomers glamorize these cars. They were fast, but a 4cyl Old Pontiac Solstice would run with it today…and in no way -stock to stock-will it beat top of the line NA cars of today like the 1320, Camaro SS or GT. 1320’s will run low 11’s stock. Forget about it trying to run with boosted cars like Hellcats, Gt500s and ZL1s

    • @crankychris2

@@SofaKingQuick Agreed. The handling and braking were awful with 700+lb motors, bias ply tires and drum brakes. I'm 70, and still remember how scary these cars were at high speed emergency turns.
I love the looks, but no 60's car can stay with a modern musclecar. They are weekend cruisers now.

Not even close to the newer cars in terms of speed and engineering, but who cares? The old iron is way cooler and prettier. The new ones are just fast plasticky appliances that will be impossible to keep going once all those high tech electronics start to get unreliable and the parts become obsolete. Simplicity is beautiful. ;)

What an amazing car. I have always had a soft spot for a Savoy. This looks to be a well documented example and a beautiful color combo as well. The hand typed letter to the new owner from the factory about its specific use is over the top. I really favored 62's because of the wild headlight configuration. This was a real treat to view, thanks to the owner and also to you Lou.

I remember an elderly couple had a Savoy like this in black with red interior. I grew up in a small town so even young I always remember cars, especially like this. Young guys always bugged them to sell it naturally. Good news happened though, a car enthusiast bought it and I was glad about that. He knew what he had and last time I saw it the car still looks new. Thank God it was saved and not purchased by someone who would have trashed it.

The reason the 64 GTO gets credited with being the first mid size muscle car is because the 62-63 413/426 Max Wedge Mopars are really considered to be more of a race car than a muscle car. They had a version of the 426 Max Wedge that had a factory compression ratio of 13.5:1...which made it pretty much impossible to drive on the street

Great look and stance. My brother and i owned a 63 Max Wedge Sport Fury black with red interior with certi card, factory radio and heater(pretty scarce items). As legend has it in NY and NJ back in the day just about unbeatable on the street. The previous owner when in our family possession was a known racer named Don Owens from Warrington Pa. I love these earlier Super Stock Dodge and Plymouths. Any Mopar 60s car with Heater/Radio delete is like gold. My first car was a '64 Belvidere, a step above the Savoy, so needless to say this car is beautiful to me. Of course, I'm a Hemi guy, but these earlier wedge engines are wonderful. You can see so many precursors of the later '60s engine bays here. That radiator reminds me of having mine rodded out... and the tank needing re-soldered after it came back from the rad shop.

In 1963 my dad was a cop for the city of Los Alamitos and being a detective he got one of these for doing undercover work. It was just a plain Blue 2-dr with a 440 in it. It had the typewriter push button auto transmission and stripped down to just a heater. I remember that speaker grill but no radio. They put the Motorola speaker behind that grill.
