  • In this video we will be answering a common question we see on our UA-cam Channel and in our office and that is "Do extractions with braces have side effects?"
Extractions with braces are common and is frequently used to help improve a patient's bite. Although extractions are common they aren't necessarily the best choice for every patient.

I had 4 premolars taken out before braces as a teen. I had two growth spurts since then. The combination of the two was enough space for my wisdom teeth to come in.

The 4 bicuspid extraction was done by an orthodontist who did so on apparently 3/4 of patients. Finances for 2 years- for a 5 yr+ treatment at $100+/for the next 3+years. I now have no room for my tongue, headaches all of the time, neck pain due to misaglined jaw/skull. Its like my top portion of my head is stuck looking up due to the teeth being pulled back. I have resigned myself to the possiblility of never getting relief, to deciding pulling them all and getting dentures would be more painess than the multiple surgeries recommended by multiple dds/ortho to fix it. Yes, i would be so grateful if now my only problem was my "teeth sticking out". Better than so verticle they basically point back and inward.

I’m having to decide between jaw surgery (would have to extract 4 teeth) or doing the teeth extraction with braces (2 teeth removed) I don’t know which choice to go with 😢

Doc, after my first month of braces, i got an open bite case, and after 2 months, my Dentist put a rubber band but it become more open and become overbite. it's been 4 days that im wearing a rubber band and I feel pain in my left jaw. I dont know what to think and my jaw's pain makes me stressful. Is this normal? He also suggested removing one molar that cause the open bite. Is that ok, Doc or is there any other way?

I'm 20 years old. I have an overbite(8mm). My bottom front teeth are too much crowded. And I have 4 dental crowns (one at bottom right, one at bottom left, one at top right, one at top left) crowns which are at top arch are ceramic ones and the bottom ones are stainless steel. I consulted an orthodontist he said leave the teeth as they are, it would be better off if we leave them without treatment. He said it wouldn't be possible with the crowns. He didn't even give me any options. Should I consult another orthodontist?

I’m pretty much in the same boat as you, except I have a mild underbite. On top of a moderately crowded bottom row, I also have two implants and 4 crowns. Luckily my orthodontist said it would be possible to correct my underbite first then to address the overcrowding in my bottom row. I’ve had both bottom wisdom teeth extracted, and it is now my 3rd week into the first phase of the treatment which is supposed to correct my underbite within 4 months. It is not fun to have the Carriere motion appliance inserted in the mouth and wear elastic bands around the clock. It also gives me soreness to the top tooth to which the retainer is attached. If the discomfort doesn’t bother you, I would suggest you to shop around a bit more, you should be able to find the right orthodontist who can help you out.

I just had my wisdom teeth removed to create more room for braces. It wasn't honestly too bad, they gave me meds to dull the pain and I didn't need it after the first day. Swollen but not bad after healing I would agree it depends on case per case basis.

Good question. I have an open-bite and I currently have a tongue tamer or tongue crib placed on lower jaw of my teeth. After that, they would put braces on my teeth and then later, they will get tooth extraction done, which will be 2 teeth from upper jaw and 2 teeth from lower jaw making it 4 healthy teeth extractions in total.
It's been having me concerned a little bit about having 4 healthy teeth extraction.

Premolar extraction/retraction is a mutulation of the skull. The arches shrink, the palate shrinks, the maxilla shrinks, the mandible retrudes. Thousands of people are now getting jaw surgery to regain rhe space of their airway and for their tongue:. Pissrd as hell at these ignorant orthodontists who continue extraction. Remember: an orthodontist is a dentist with mechamical.skills. Not a trained doctor. Fiddling with your skull

Instead of chucking completely healthy teeth to “straighten them”, why not just expand the upper arch with MARPE and expand the lower with SFOT/ Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO)?

    • @luke14946
      @luke14946 9 місяців тому

@@zaheri08 As far as I'm aware, MARPE and MSDO can be done at around a similar time to eachother, like MARPE put in first, then MSDO performed after, but I'm not entirely sure... MSDO/Mandibular Midline Distraction is an Interdisciplinary treatment requiring collaboration between both an Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeon, aswell as an Orthodontist.
There's some case reports of MSDO being performed in patients aged 14-40s, and can be done under Local Anesthesia + Conscious Sedation
      (ie. instead of general anesthesia)
it basically involves cutting the chin down the middle, then using either a surgically implanted distractor (for example, such as a KLS MARTIN "Rotterdam" or "Bologna") which requires a 2nd follow-up procedure to later remove after, or a toothborne-distractor that attaches to the teeth similar to a HYRAX.
Also post-op, a "latency period" of about a week, would be required prior to turning the distractor, after distraction is complete, and the new bone sets, or starts setting, the teeth can then be orthodontically aligned.

why don't you expand to make more room for the teeth? vs taking them out? And yes we've been extracting for 100s of years, BUT THATS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT ANYMORE. just because its the way its always been done doesn't been its the correct way -_-when u say none of your patients have had issues, you do know that airway issues and sleep apnea develop OVER TIME. are u going to be keeping up with them when they develop sleep disordered breathing in 10-15 yrs?
