I wore my retainer diligently every night for 10 years and would’ve happily continued doing so for the rest of my life until my sister came up to me one day and she was like, “You’ve been wearing that retainer so long, you don’t need them anymore, don’t worry your teeth won’t shift.” And I stupidly believed her and stopped wearing my retainer and now my teeth have shifted so much I need braces again. 😭
This is exactly what happened to me and I’m still pissed off 20 years later. I was told back then that I only needed to wear them full time for 3 months then only at night for 6 months and then I could completely stop altogether. I stupidly threw them away when I went to college and some of my teeth starting going back to the way they were. Nowhere near as bad as they were. But now I have an overbite again, and one of my front teeth sits more forward that the other. I believe the real problem is that my braces were not left on long enough. Dr. originally said 2 1/2 years, but cut it short to 1 1/2 years because he said they moved faster than he thought. Wish I had told him to leave them on longer, but I was young and desperate to get my smile back.
have you guys tried the “permanent” retainers? I know I personally couldn’t get a top one bc of the way my bottom teeth hit my inner teeth. but if you don’t have much of an over bite , might be nice to look into!
I was blessed. Had braces for 4 years. Stopped wearing my retainer after about 3 years and my teeth are still straight after 10 years. Can still fit the retainers in too.
Problem with braces is once off, your teeth continue to shift throughout life and you will always need to wear a retainer or the teeth will get worse. Its life long treatment
I wasn't told this before treatment and was forced into it by a parent as a teen, my teeth were honestly fine beforehand but after painful debilitating treatment I was informed I had to now wear a retainer for the rest of my life... I was heartbroken, it caused me so many sensory issues (I have a sensory processing disorder) and I couldn't live with the retainer. I had been so grateful to free my teeth... Years later and my teeth have shifted a lot, a lot more compared to if I never gotten the expensive waste-of-money treatment in the first place :/ honestly, kids/teens should never be forced into it if it's for cosmetic reasons. I was never properly educated on it and had I been I would have fought harder against it, but my parents were convinced and the orthodontist wanted to make a buck lmao
@@whatdadogdoin9818 the last time I wore my retainer was back in 2012, so trying to force it on just seems... Painful and maybe even harmful. My point being that when I got braces ( or Invisalign in my case) I wasn't taught that I would require retainers at all, I basically went through it thinking once I got them off I was done for good, hence my major disappointment lol
Explain to me how people’s parents pay thousands of dollars for braces and then they don’t wear their retainer. I wore mine every. Single. Night for like three years. Now I can go two or three days without, but I make sure to wear it a couple times a week at least. Edit: You guys realize not all human beings on planet earth have depression right? I asked a general question, you guys are giving me very specific answers and implying those answers are law. If you have depression and it makes it hard for you to take care of things like basic hygiene, okay. I’m not saying you’re lying. But not everyone has depression. Just because you have it, doesn’t mean the world has it. Take care and I hope you’re able to find treatment.
i wore my retainer everyday for about four ish years then i started getting tired of it and haven’t worn it for like four months so kinda scared to put it back on now rip
I mean in my case I have this thing called mental illness and I just physically can't take care of myself sometimes because of it 🤷 I'm sure other people just forget or never form a habit of wearing it. And would probably be harder to forget if they were the one, not their parents, paying for it.
Just got my retainer today. I made sure to ask my dentist every question I could think of because there is no way in hell I am going through braces again 😂
I had braces as a teen im now in my mid 30s I wore my retainers a whole yr and then didn't, the shifting that occurred for me happen to my lower teeth when I got pregnant at 29..I also am a dental assistant please wear the retainer forever if you don't want shifting to occur
I didn't wear my retainer for almost a year and a half due to lack of routine in lockdown and a simultaneous depressive episode. When I went to put it back in my bottom was fine and my top had only suffered minor movement (thankfully) however I could barely fit them in. To fix this I would wear them half on every night until I noticed I was able to get them 100% on. Now back to wearing them every night :D
@@gisellez I’ve had the same ones for 15+ years because they’re a crazy durable plastic. They are the exact mold of my teeth from the day I got my braces off. I clean them every day, obviously. They’re still in pretty great shape for being so old! 🤷🏼♀️
@@ariess7394 for me I had to wear them everyday for 2 weeks and I would only take them out to drink or eat (obviously people get different advice) and now I only wear them at night there are a few nights where I forget to put them in or have forgotten to take them to the place I’m going but that’s quite rare
I'm on my last month of Invisilgns. My first 2-3 weeks were so painful. There's no way I could voluntarily feel that pain again. I will definitely wear my retainer daily. The sound of her top tray was all the convincing I need.
I can imagine the pain she's in. Stopped wearing mine for couple of months and although wearing them again wasn't extremely painful, it was extremely uncomfortable.
I wore my Molly retainers for like 2 months and I started noticing that my gap in my teeth started coming back so I wore the plastic retainer last night and my teeth hurt. They feel like I have braces once again
i am gonna do exactly what she did, I think Its been more than 1 year for me. I remember earlier when i wore them after a hiatus and it was such a discomfort, felt like need to massage , rub my gums to ease the pain. This time, the hiatus has been longer.. ......
It just shows how the dental industry is a scam. They don't fix the actual issue of you having a palate too narrow. They purposefully recess your upper jaw to fix whats on the surface and make it look like you have "straight teeth" (aka proper skull development), and then make you wear this retainer for the rest of your life since they never fixed anything
I didn’t wear my retainer for years after I got out of high school. I don’t know what provoked me to start again but I went back to my ortho for a new set... several hundred dollars later, now that I’ve spent my own money, I’m totally committed to wearing them every single night. In fact, I actually feel like something is off if I don’t wear them to bed for some reason, like my nighttime routine isn’t complete and I can’t sleep yet. I really enjoy them!
With me when they told me I only had to wear them at night I just stopped, haven't worn them in months and when I tired putting them back in it hurt to much and I gave up, idc really anymore and the main problem teeth didn't move so I chilling
Same, have you ever heard of Invisalign vivera retainer. I got a set of 4 for about $500 all 4 sets. Compared to my original orthodontist, he wanted to charge me $1000 for these sets. I did get them with another dentist by me, but they though I was an original customer so I got 100 off. Either way these retainers are good too
I’m the same way, I just got tired of wearing it after I got out of college and it’s been about 10 years only I can tell anything but their still really straight, just not right where they were before!
i wore them for around 2 years too, i had to stop because of an infection that i couldnt get properly treated because it was during lockdown. my teeth have moved but i dont think theyre as bad as before and my overbite is kinda fixed so ive just accepted that theyll never be straight
@@NoRockinMansLanddefinitely mostly genetics. some people’s teeth begin shifting a year or two after braces are off without a retainer and others go most of their life without wearing their retainer properly and kept their straight teeth. it’s also to do with the age you get them (younger ages tend to see less shifting as their facial structure is still developing.)
I'm 90 percent done with braces, and I will DILIGENTLY wear my retainers. I've worked so hard just to straighten my teeth 😢 Update 9 months later: I got my braces off back in July, and now I only have to wear my retainer in the night ✨
Wear them, and if people criticize you for wearing retainers, don’t pay them any attention. Trust me. I’ve been wearing mine for ten years. Teeth still straight, and all people ask me how my teeth are so straight. I have a friend and all his bottom teeth shifted and now needs braces again
Same I got mine off 5 months ago, and I’ve been wearing my retainers 23 hours a day every since. Idk how people don’t wear it after all that hard work of braces
that is what invisalign feels like, honestly. They said the first two sets would hurt, I’m on 22 and it still hurts. I wear them for like 22-23 hours a day.
Mine it hurt me the first aligner. But not bad, just uncomfortable to chew food. I thought I was done with my treatment. But no :( I'm at 36, waiting for the rest. I used them for nine months. One every week. They are almost perfect except for four tooth on the top. :(
I lost my retainer and was living in a different state. I found out about teeth retain designs they made me a perfect retainer online from home this industry has come a long way
As someone who’s needed braces and has never been able to afford them, it’s astonishing to me that parents or people in general can spend thousands of dollars on braces, just for the recipient of said braces to not care for the teeth properly. Just ridiculous to me.
How do you know that her parents paid that? Some ppl get braces as adults. But either way its not like kids ask for braces, no one told them to pay that 💀 you can say its for their health but it dont seem like it matter
i was never even told about retainers. for over a year i was looking forward excited for the day i’d finally get my braces taken off thinking that would be it 😒
My friend said to me the other day, “I have a dentist appointment in a few weeks and I haven’t worn my retainer in five months,” and I immediately thought of all the dentists I watch on youtube and what their reactions would be.
I have a tip for anyone who has been wearing a loose retainer for a while after getting braces and doesn't want to have to put it in and out every night/day or is afraid that their teeth will move back to their original position. There is the option of having the orthodontist stick a wire behind your teeth, but this will remain for life. I've had this since I was 14 and have had very few problems so far. But you should be careful when eating, because it can naturally happen that the wire can bend or even come off at one point. It will then either be remade or simply glued back on, after which you will have peace and quiet again. The cleaning effort is a little more, you need a special dental floss, but you can use it to clean the spaces between your teeth wonderfully, otherwise you can also use mouthwash. You don't really need a special toothbrush, but an electric one is recommended by most dentists anyway. Please seek advice from your local orthodontist beforehand. I hope I could perhaps be of some help to some of you. Of course, if you don't want that, you're not forced to.
My parents couldnt afford to get braces for my sister and i when we were in school, so it always annoyed me when the kids that had them would complain about them and then wouldnt wear their retainers after. When i got my first job i paid for braces myself and i never complained and religiously wore my retainer. Theyre fricken expensive so i would never dream of letting all that money and treatment go to waste.
I'm grateful that i saw this video. I'm in my 3rd months having braces and as my orthodontists says that i am required to wear retainer after getting braces off. i thought retainer isn't that essential but now watching this video and reading your comments preparing me to be ready wearing it for the rest of my life knowing that my dad working hard for it and yes retainer is very expensive so i hope by that time i could get a work so i don't need to ask it from my dad as he already gave too much :(
I wore my retainer every night or 2-3 years. Then I began to slowly ware off them, like wearing them once every 2 days, then so and so. Now i don’t wear them anymore, and my teeth are still perfectly straight after 3-4 years of not wearing them!
@@SophieElisellwood oh no! I know my teeth have shifted like the slightest bit but my teeth still are very straight. But I couldn’t wear the retainers again because they annoyed the heck out of me for them years wearing them at night
This is so unfair. My retainers got small cracks and broken so i stopped wearing them after over a year and a half bc they'd cut my tongue/cheek. my orthodontist closed and were relocating and said they would contact me for the next appointment but never did. They relocated i called them up, booked an appointment for june bc the retainers didn't fit went there all for them to say "no you've had your retainers treatment for over a year youre only entitled to a year. Book another appointment if you want to be seen by doctor. They made me travel all the way to an unfriendly clinic just to not bee seen by an orthodontist. Their only advice was to force them in even though they dont fit and I'm in excruciating pain whenever i try to get them in. I started wearing them less often from January this year and completely stopped around mid to late February. They stopped fitting around April this year and It's now August. I also didnt know were allowed to cut the retainers if they were broken at the top lol. I guess ill have to retry braces when i have money? I originally had braces to fix my bite and although it fixed most of it, my jaw still doesnt feel well aligned and feels uncomfortable at resting state when my jaws are closed.
after 3 years of braces, 1 year of 24 hour retainer and 1 year of night retainer my orthodontist told me i didn't need to wear it anymore. I didn't believe him. So i continued for years until it broke. Well. 10+ years later the crowding is back, the over-bite is right back to square one. Had jaw alignment issues for years afterwards. Yeah. Thanks Doc.
I had a bad overbite when i removed my braces,, my doc did not instruct me to wear my removable retainer when i removed them.. he said he’ll tell me when to start wearing them and i had to go for check up every 3 months(never went because i had to pay 700 each visit… i also have permanent retainers…. But i hated my overbite so i decided to just wear them.. now people compliment my teeth and smile..looks like it’s a lifetime treatment😭😭
@@sim4296 REALLY!? this was like 23 to 20 years ago (the duration of my braces). My teeth are all effed and almost worse than how they started lol 🤦♂️
I couldn’t stand my retainer. No matter how many times they adjusted it it always hurt because they had to put a false tooth in with it. I wore mine for six months and then I couldn’t stand it anymore, it was pure torture
I started off wearing mine every night and then switched to every other night and then to 2 nights then skip a night then 2 nights again and so on. Making minor adjustments to my schedule every so often actually helped my teeth to where if I accidentally skip an extra day or 2 my teeth won't shift at all.
My dad accidentally threw my retainers away while cleaning the house angrily. My mom was supposed to make me an orthodontist appointment the get new ones(since I was in like 8th grade) and she never did. I'm so gonna need braces again. I'm 20 now😅
Funnily enough i had braces for like 3 years and stopped wearing my retainers after a few months and they still haven't shifted at all a year or 2 later
I stopped wearing mine because it was just really too much effort to keep taking them out before I ate etc. My teeth moved a bit but it never returned to how they were prior to me getting braces.
Yes, its such an effort to take them out and on, dont be such a pussy. You have time to waste watching youtube videos but cant wear a retainer.... fucking hell
...You know that after just a month of wearing them full time you can just wear them only at night while you sleep right? And after just a couple more months you don't even have to wear them every night? If you stopped wearing them before even that point I fear for the future of your teeth and the thousands of dollars from whoever paid for your braces being wasted.
I just got braces on for the second time (20 years in-between) because i stopped wearing my retainer. Teeth moved back to same position as before I had braces the first time. Learn from my mistake people.
Havent worn my retainer in 5 years and the only thing that kinda came back was my overbite, but it’s minimal compared to before braces I went and found it just now - gonna try to be more diligent!
Teeth move after about 2 weeks of not wearing is when it become not so comfortable Teeth retain designs they do something with the wax makes it not hurt so bad
I’ve had my retainers for like 6 years and I wear them RELIGIOUSLY-the most I’ve gone w/o wearing them is like 4 or 5 days, but even then it was really bc I forgot them when my family took a road trip when I was in HS lmao Occasionally I won’t put them in before bed if I’m tired as hell but it’s typically one or two nights every few months, not a regular thing at all lol Though I mean…I wear them bc braces were expensive and I had so many issues I had to have them for like 3 years, but also I wear my retainers bc I clench my jaw at night so they help protect my teeth 😭 I’ve had two pairs of retainers bc after a year or two they start getting cracks in the molars 😭😭
May i ask if you're willing to answer.. when first having retainer, do we have to wear it all the time and take it off only when brushing our teeth and eat for two weeks? After that we can took it off and wear it only at night? This was from the video but Bentist talks too fast i cant understand it well :(
Yea I at first was hesitant of getting a retainer, but then I realized it would stop me grinding my teeth and would be a good jaw guard when I sleep in general. Honestly the fact I only have to wear them like 3 times a week is a W too.
My orthodontist didn’t say anything about retainers before I got my braces. After 2 years they told me that I have to wear retainers for 1 year. I was already very much exhausted of wearing braces for 2 years, those years felt like a nightmare. I was eagerly waiting for my braces to the end but concept of retainer felt like it's not over yet. Apparently so many people don't hate braces or retainer at all but I hated my braces so much that I stopped wearing retainer after 5/6 months. Now it’s more than 4 years and happily I don’t remember what I have done with my retainer.. After 3 years I got a tiny little tooth gap but I feel like It's worth having that than wearing those. I truly appreciate them who likes to wear braces and embrace them. I feel it takes a lot of courage to wear them for so long. Braces wasn’t that much common in my region so I got bullied throughout my whole middle school, people laughed at me, made jokes on me. I never took any picture of mine smiling for 2 years. So, I hope no one ever has to have braces in their life.
i needed this video! i was freaking out since i hadn’t worn my retainer in a while and started noticing shifting in my teeth. thank goodness the retainer can get my teeth back to normal! this makes me be more calm about it :)
I actually didn’t know your teeth would go straight again if you put your retainer back in I figured the retainer would just move. This was helpful thank you!
That's why i would prefer bonded retainers. I had to stop wearing my plastic ones because they were so uncomfortable to wear, cutting into my cheeks to the point of scarring and irritating my gums
I was SO bad with my retainers! I had the plastic ones with the silver metal line across the front of my teeth and when I wouldn’t wear them for months I had the same reaction. I thought it broke my damn teeth😂
Did your teeth shift back? I didn't wear my retainer for 5 months, my tooth has shifted a little, but i could put back the retainer easily again now, will it go back to normal? 😢
I've seen retainers in movies/shows and always thought they were a type of braces, but they are something you wear after braces to make sure your teeth dont move back? I'm so happy I got a wire glued behind my front teeth after I had braces. You can only see it if you look very close and I never have to worry about a retainer or about cleaning it
I used to have expanders, which basically just look like the classic wire retainers but you can make them expand. I needed them cause apparently my mouth is really small, even though I’ve never had any issues with overcrowding or anything before or since wearing the expanders. The dentist wanted me to wear the expanders, and then get braces to fix my already very straight teeth… for some reason. Was supposed to only have the expander for 6-12 months, had it from my 12th birthday to my second semester of freshmen year when I stopped wearing the damn thing. Hated it, didn’t wanna wear it anymore. It gave me the worst lisp imaginable, I could barely talk when I had it in, and I had to wear it practically full time. The wires kept breaking or bending, I clench my jaw in my sleep sometimes and ended up cracking one of the many sets of expanders I had cause of that. I also still have a lisp. Even though I don’t wear them anymore. I did not have a speech problem before wearing them, but now I do, I guess. Never got braces. Never followed through with my dental work. Just sounds like way more money and pain than it’s worth for me, especially considering I haven’t ever had any issues with my teeth/mouth and they’re already pretty straight.
@@nevins1351 ? Why would he need money from the internet if he's a dentist? He does it because he likes educating people and making people happy, not everybody just wants money from it.
I find it weird.. I wore my retainer for 5 years, then it some how broke. I'm wondering if it was one of my cats, knocked it off a nightstand or something, but I'd taken it to my orthodontist at the time and they were just like.. "How long have you been wearing it?" "5 years?" "Eh you'll be fine." Teeth haven't shifted at all since. So guess it's a case by case basis?
I don't understand why they have these retainers in the US. In the Netherlands when you get your braces removed you get a splint at the back of your teeth that will keep them in place and you don't have to mess around with any retainer
@@jenniellepplesI'm Dutch too and had the metal wires too but it's confusing bc my new dentist made me a loose retainer for the rest of my teeth since the wires only cover the 4 upper and botten front teeth not my molar teeth who seem to flare a bit
People who gets these should be first thing reminded that it freaking hurts if you stop wearing them. I didnt for like a week and damn the pressure was intense
Wear your retainers people! Some people can go without wearing it ever again, but some people (like me) cannot, and their teeth will move. But you don't know that until you stop wearing it. I stopped for about a month, and couldn't get them back on again. Now I want Invisalign to fix the movement
Notably if you're gonna do this, WEAR IT CONSISTENTLY. Just wearing it for one night will only losen up your teeth and they'll shift right back. Doing this chronically for years will reduce the depth of your roots, permanently compromising your teeth. Ask me how I know 🙃
My retainer accidentally got trashed, I’m still upset about it. Couldn’t afford the couple hundred to get a new one. Thankfully my teeth haven’t shifted much at all, which is surprising to me since I had to wear braces for almost 4 years.
I learned this from the bentist, get a boil and bite one until you can get a new retainer . Don't use it for too long because it can cause jaw issues! Also, if it's not in your face, it's in the case. Please don't just fold it in a napkin again-
I had braces about 30 years ago, and only wore my retainer for a few months and stopped. I honestly can't tell you why, I was 14 and stupid. My bottom teeth have a tiny gap in the front but other than that they didn't shift much at all. My teeth are very tight though, so that might be why I got lucky.
I wore braces for half of my entire childhood and all I have to gain from it is an irrational hatred of anyone in the dentistry and orthodontic fields. What absolute perfectionist freaks
right??? my teeth have shifted back a bit after 10+ years of not wearing a retainer, but not back to how they originally were. So they are straight, just not "hollywood straight" or like super perfect chiclet looking... and i like the way that looks, i prefer that much more than shoving something in my mouth anytime i have to sleep
Fr. My bottom teeth have shifted a bit and they aren't straight across the top but I actually like them this way. After I got braces my jaw wouldn't fit right and wouldn't feel great when I ate. I never even really wanted them in the first place
@@qwertbird2833this is giving me hope bc my jawline changed negatively and it feels not in proportion. Not for looks and also my molar teeth aren't touching. I want to remove the permanent stint behind my front teeth. I was hoping that my jaw etc will go back to old me. I miss my original face and teeth. Also, my mouth feels more narrow.
I was at work, and I met an really old retired lady, idk how the conversation sparked up but she said she had braces when she was in middle school, and she still wears her retainer every night to this day. So yea it’s realistic to wear a retainer for the rest of your life.
@@willis_way For the vast majority of people it’s not. Unless they have a permanent retainer, most people won’t bother going to the orthodontist for the rest of their life.
I haven't worn my retainers since june. It made the top of my mouth ultra sensitive, making my gag reflex worse than it was. I can't put it back in unless I gag, so I didn't risk it. My teeth have stayed straight though. Thoughts on this, Bentist?
Guysss i saw comments n i went through same retainer issue teeth shifts because if you have some phosporus deficiecy after treatment it gives teeth and bones strength to stay stiff n strong but then tongue is our enemy again ones who has had habit of using their milk bottles until age of 7 8 years drinking milk from milk bottle causes to tongue to excercise n change it position habitually towards upwards which causes tongue to push teeth front ward even more while sleeping so dr gives an equipment to make tongue change is position to normal than upward pallet of mouth along our two front teeth n changing tongue position really helps n issue is solved forever
I haven’t worn my retainer in years. Haven’t been able to since my wisdom teeth came in. 😅 At least when I had my braces it was before these fancy retainers, so my bottom teeth have the permanent one at least, so they aren’t going anywhere. Sadly my top have shifted a bit though. 🙈
@@pinkwakabeagle Yeah if you don’t practice proper dental hygiene. Flossing and brushing is important. It’s no different than the rest of the mouth, you just have to take time to thread the floss through each part.
My retainer didnt fit right the day they made them. And pinched my gums and they said they were fine and not to worry about it. So I never wore them, and now 4 years later my bottom teeth are crooked af again. My top teeth don't seem to have moved at all.
Her reaction was how my first tray of Invisalign felt like 😂. That snap click sound followed by an instant feeling of teeth cracking/snapping. But after that first tray you don’t even notice the trays that much
Living like this is so miserable. I hate wearing my retainer 😞 I can only wear mine at night otherwise I’ll end up chewing them off. I had to get a new retainer within only 2 months of wearing the “final” retainer because I can’t avoid grinding my teeth with them on. It’s so uncomfortable for me. It’s sad to know this is something to deal with for a lifetime unless I choose to say f it and let my teeth get crooked. So I can feel this girls pain, I would do the same if this wasn’t such a huge investment. 🤦🏻♀️ uhhh. I think personally if I waited a couple of months I wouldn’t be so lucky. My teeth shift throughout the day by the time it’s bedtime my bottom teeth are a bit wonky. The straightness of my bottom teeth only last an hour or two when I remove the retainer.
Can't you have a permanent retainer at least in the bottom teeth? That's what I have. It's basically a wire glued to the inner face of your teeth. You don't need to remove it and hardly notice it after a few days.
@@yos.5684 I’ve thought about getting that but then I saw a video where someone had a lot of build up on them. In your opinion do you think it’s difficult to keep them clean?
@@777violett No, it's not difficult, I've got them and there might be the odd piece of food stuck now and again, but if you brush your teeth almost after every meal you should be fine. There are water irrigators that are supposed to work very well but if you don't wanna spend money on that, just washing your mouth with water strongly does the job. If I ever have something really stuck I take a pin and gently push it. But it seldom happens! I've had them for two years already and it's clean :)
i only wore my retainers for a few months and 5 years later my teeth looks good they only shifted very little which am thankful for because my mom would of kicked my butt if my teeth were messed up again 😮💨
Here because I haven’t worn mine for a year. They fit exactly like hers and talking about pain 😭😭😭😭! Def going to keep wearing them until my teeth are back right. Lesson learned.
I kept sleep grinding to the point I just kept ruining all my retainers as a teen. My mom couldn’t keep up with that financially so my top teeth look great but my bottoms have shifted unfortunately.
When you get money ask for them to be replaced. My permanent retainer broke and there was a slight space shift. I never had problems with my metal retainers. 20+ years out of braces.
I had braces then a retainer on top and the permanent wire on bottom. Wore the retainer for about 2 years then stopped because I lost the damn thing. Luckily my teeth didn't really shift much at all, so teeth still look good. Also I have never broken that perm wire retainer and I have eaten apples and all kinds of hard things like ice with reckless abandon, still never broke the thing. Honestly it would feel weird if it wasn't there.
I had some seriously messed up teeth. Braces fixed them like 95%. I don't know if it's just me but retainers made my mouth smell so bad. So I said fuck it and stopped using them. My teeth shifted back but not too much. Still looks much better than pre-braces.
I suffered the same smell but after flossing and using an anti cavity mouth was ONLY 2 times for the first day made it disappear. also I didn’t clean my teeth really good when I had braces so when it was removed my gum was inflated. believe me all you need is to have good cleaning supplies and never. skip. brushing.
I was like this the minute I got my retainer. And no one would listen to me. It hurt so much more than my braces ever did in 7 years, and I had a chain and everything. I never wore it for more than a few minutes despite putting them in and trying to tolerate the pain as long as I could. I gave up.
one, I went through hell during the time I had braces and paid for them for two years with like 2/3 of my income, so yeah I’m gonna wear my retainers, also I only put them when I’m about to go to bed after I brush my teeth, and you’ll be sleeping so idk what’s the big deal? unless you don’t brush your teeth before goong to bed
I didn’t wear mine for 7 years. Found them at my mom’s house and washed them and put them in. It hurt for a few days but not terribly. Then it was fine
@@A93-qg9xj I always washed them previously and then had them in the safe in a dry case so it wasn’t terribly dirty. I used an electric toothbrush and washed with dawn soap, then toothpaste, then I let it sit in mouthwash for like ten minutes and rinsed it off.
I haven’t worn my retainer for a good 2 and a half years until last week and surprisingly, my teeth didn’t hurt as much as I expected. It was just a minor ache but other than that I got used to it by the third night. Now I routinely sleep with them on and my teeth are straighter than they were before but not by a lot. Guess I got good teeth genes or something.
I had a retainer( the metal wire tho) before braces and i wasnt really regular with it, but once i get my braces off and get my clear retainer im wearing rhat sshit every day because i am not going thru this AGAIN
I wore mine for years but when i started staying at my boyfriends place i would forget to take it with me. long story short it was a full year before i started wearing it again, and my bottom teeth moved SO much and it was so painful to put them back in. i actually tried twice to start wearing them again lmao but i pushed through the pain and they’re still not perfect, but my teeth are pretty much back to normal and it no longer hurts !!! gotta get a new one soon lol 🤩
Yeah, my mom freeze dries candy and my sister has braces, the milk duds are even better than the Skittles in fact, we discovered them after I no longer had braces and I LOVE milk duds and now I'm jealous that my sister can eat them with braces when I couldn't. So to answer your question; yes, freeze dried milk duds are great for braces, and in my opinion are better than regular milk duds!
Kids these days are so lucky, I had the acrylic/wire one, these are clear! Wow! I tried putting mine back in the pain was too much and they're crooked again. Keep wearing your retainer!
Oh noo
That's horrific
Idk bro ur teeth shouldnt have shifted after TEN YEARS of wearing retainers consistently ur bones should have solidified.
have you guys tried the “permanent” retainers? I know I personally couldn’t get a top one bc of the way my bottom teeth hit my inner teeth. but if you don’t have much of an over bite , might be nice to look into!

Years later and my teeth have shifted a lot, a lot more compared to if I never gotten the expensive waste-of-money treatment in the first place :/

@@NoRockinMansLanddefinitely mostly genetics. some people’s teeth begin shifting a year or two after braces are off without a retainer and others go most of their life without wearing their retainer properly and kept their straight teeth. it’s also to do with the age you get them (younger ages tend to see less shifting as their facial structure is still developing.)

true bro true
What is the special dental floss? It's not a string?
My parents couldnt afford to get braces for my sister and i when we were in school, so it always annoyed me when the kids that had them would complain about them and then wouldnt wear their retainers after. When i got my first job i paid for braces myself and i never complained and religiously wore my retainer. Theyre fricken expensive so i would never dream of letting all that money and treatment go to waste.
I hear you. My mom worked an extra job for my braces so I don’t get it. 38 year old who wears retainers at least 3 nights a week.

Haven’t worn mine in 10 years and my teeth are still super straight
It took about 22 or so years before my teeth shifted and I needed braces again. Just a caution :/
That's why i would prefer bonded retainers. I had to stop wearing my plastic ones because they were so uncomfortable to wear, cutting into my cheeks to the point of scarring and irritating my gums
After this, I am going to continuously wear my retainers & not play because I would hate to pay for braces again.
You can only see it if you look very close and I never have to worry about a retainer or about cleaning it
What is it called? Like the one you have is it the semi permanent retainer?
actually you do have to clean it😭 isn't that one of the more difficult ones to clean? you have to floss more to avoid teeth damage
You still have to wear your retainers because you only have them on your front teeth lol. The rest of your teeth can still move.

I don't understand why they have these retainers in the US. In the Netherlands when you get your braces removed you get a splint at the back of your teeth that will keep them in place and you don't have to mess around with any retainer
That's so lucky. Retainers and braces are so expensive only for it to be temporary. I didn't even have the option for the metal wires you mentioned😭
@@jenniellepplesI'm Dutch too and had the metal wires too but it's confusing bc my new dentist made me a loose retainer for the rest of my teeth since the wires only cover the 4 upper and botten front teeth not my molar teeth who seem to flare a bit
They do have that but it's harder to floss your teeth and plaque starts to build up
@ yes they invented water flossers for that
People who gets these should be first thing reminded that it freaking hurts if you stop wearing them. I didnt for like a week and damn the pressure was intense
Thank you bro❤❤
I was reading on line that wearing them doesn’t work but you just saved me so much stress.
Time to wear mine full time
Wear your retainers people! Some people can go without wearing it ever again, but some people (like me) cannot, and their teeth will move. But you don't know that until you stop wearing it. I stopped for about a month, and couldn't get them back on again. Now I want Invisalign to fix the movement
When she popped the top one in she went “🙊”😂
im so done with the freaking "lets appreciate" comments, like dude, we know youre clout chasing and its annoying
“OoOoOoO ThAt HuRt” had me dying 😂
Notably if you're gonna do this, WEAR IT CONSISTENTLY. Just wearing it for one night will only losen up your teeth and they'll shift right back. Doing this chronically for years will reduce the depth of your roots, permanently compromising your teeth. Ask me how I know 🙃
Currently just started wearing retainers! So uncomfy but better than wearing braces again! Lol
Please don't just fold it in a napkin again-
The permanent wire stint only costs around 40 euro's!
This guy has so much energy and talks so fast its a wonder HIS TEETH haven't fallen out!
This reminded me to start wearing my retainer again. 2 weeks straight and then nightly..got it
I had braces about 30 years ago, and only wore my retainer for a few months and stopped. I honestly can't tell you why, I was 14 and stupid. My bottom teeth have a tiny gap in the front but other than that they didn't shift much at all. My teeth are very tight though, so that might be why I got lucky.
Ive had my invisalign out for years, teeth never shifted....i feel lucky?
your teeth have most definitely shifted a very small amount to the point it isnt noticeable.
@Belle R. , no one. im just saying that it definitely did shift?
His gasp of fear in all his videos gets me every time 😂
I wore braces for half of my entire childhood and all I have to gain from it is an irrational hatred of anyone in the dentistry and orthodontic fields.
It’s unrealistic to have someone wear a retainer for the rest of their life. Some people take the gamble and hope they never shift back again😂
@@x4tfxChallengeryou don't have to continue going to the othodontist. You just wear your retainer
That's why I won't bother with braces... I'm not gonna want to do that and a little tooth gap isn't a big deal.
No it’s realistic, y’all just don’t have the motivation to wear it then y’all complain after your teeth shifted lol
I haven't worn my retainers since june.
It made the top of my mouth ultra sensitive, making my gag reflex worse than it was.
I can't put it back in unless I gag, so I didn't risk it.
My teeth have stayed straight though.
Thoughts on this, Bentist?
Be careful the people who never had a retainer in the comment section might start telling you how “ignorant” you are. That’s my only advice
yEah yOu'Re so iGnorant
(a joke)
@@sakurasetaria Lmao, nice one lol
Maybe try to ask ur dentist or smth idk
But it's maybe better than them getting back to how they used to be
And than have to wear braces again
I wish I had a permanent retainer, I only have it behind my two front teeth
I saw a video that permanent retainers hold food and plaque and it looked disgusting
@@pinkwakabeagle Yeah if you don’t practice proper dental hygiene. Flossing and brushing is important. It’s no different than the rest of the mouth, you just have to take time to thread the floss through each part.
Love you so much!!! You make my fear of dentists vanish lol!
It takes about 20 years to shift significantly, and then you may need braces again :/ … just wear them.
Damn this just reminded me I haven’t worn mine in nearly 2 years, forgot about that thing
My dentist made me a retainer to protect my teeth from grinding 🤔 but also to keep teeth in place
I wore my retainer for 10 years religiously after my braces and finally stopped lol. My teeth been great ever since😂
This is why im so gonna wear my retainers when my braces are gone (i don't even have braces yet but im sure i finna need em)
my orthodontist didn’t even give me an option and gave me permanent retainers for this exact reason
Dawg if your mouth smells bad because of retainers then you don’t wash them at all probably
You have to wash them. I clean them regularly and rinse them daily.
I suffered the same smell but after flossing and using an anti cavity mouth was ONLY 2 times for the first day made it disappear. also I didn’t clean my teeth really good when I had braces so when it was removed my gum was inflated. believe me all you need is to have good cleaning supplies and never. skip. brushing.
Permanent wires behind your teeth is an alternative but I want to get rid of them.
I was like this the minute I got my retainer. And no one would listen to me. It hurt so much more than my braces ever did in 7 years, and I had a chain and everything. I never wore it for more than a few minutes despite putting them in and trying to tolerate the pain as long as I could. I gave up.
one, I went through hell during the time I had braces and paid for them for two years with like 2/3 of my income, so yeah I’m gonna wear my retainers, also I only put them when I’m about to go to bed after I brush my teeth, and you’ll be sleeping so idk what’s the big deal? unless you don’t brush your teeth before goong to bed
invisalign wearers every 2 weeks…… OUCH
I've never had issues putting in my invisalign aligners.
@@roter13 yeah but putting in new sets when they’re so tight hurts
I didn’t wear mine for 7 years. Found them at my mom’s house and washed them and put them in. It hurt for a few days but not terribly. Then it was fine
How did you wash them. I found mine also 10 years after wearing braces. They kinda fit, but are extremely dirty… Since I only rinsed them back then.
Quick question, how do we get new ones exactly
@@IIIISai go to your orthodontist
U know I haven't understood a single thing u have said........It was so fast u know.....🙃
Huh-
hey bentist saw your short on the freeze dried skittles and was wondering, would freeze dried milk duds be safe for braces?? love the videos btw:)
