A few fun facts that I learned about this movie from watching it in high school:
1. When Mercutio is shot and you see that storm coming in on the shore, that is an actual hurricane that was coming in on set. But it fits the scene so well, that the director insisted on finishing the scene even while the hurricane was only hours from land.
2. The reason Romeo is so upset about Rosaline, is because Rosalind refused to have sex with him and that made him depressed.
3. When Romeo and Juliet got married, Tybalt became part of Romeo's family, which is why he was so hesitant about shooting him despite how he was supposed to be his enemy but unbeknownst to everyone else, Tybalt was also a Montague due to the marriage.
4. In the movie, there is a moment at the start where Juliet's mom is supposed to talk to Juliet, but she calls the Nurse back instead to do so and to help her. The reason for that is because the Nurse might as well be Juliet's mother because she is the one who actually raised her and cared for her in the technical sense of tending to her needs as a baby. Hence why the Nurse is usually always on Juliet's side, but Juliet's mom basically tells her to go screw off the second that she gets punished for Juliet confessing about her love for Romeo. There is relationship between Juliet's mom and Juliet.
This version on the play is so, SO GOOD!! I also love your reaction sooo much, especially you thirsting for Leonardo DiCaprio.
Mercutio was stabbed under romeo's hand. That's a fun play on words.
Also the Captain and Mercutio were kinsmen. Harold Perrineau definitely has the best performance in this movie (imo)
rosaline wanted to become a nun. meaning she can't have a relationship, have kids, get married, etc. so by seeking to becoming a nun she basically rejected his love

Exactly - her dads enemies should be her dads enemies but instead she and her entire family are pulled into her dads drama. Mercutio isn't part of either family but he's pulled into the drama just because he happened to be there. Their dads let the whole city get caught up in their drama and don't even really stop their families from getting involved with it - in fact they're still trying to join in as we saw in the earlier fight. They're supposed to be older and more mature but they're not.
I love this movie. As a William Shakespeare fan, this gets my approval. 😎 👍
Fun Fact: Leonardo DiCaprio's version of Romeo's speech at Juliet's bier was so good that it moved Claire Danes to tears, nearly ruining the scene. Danes later smacked DiCaprio on the arm, telling him: "Don't make me cry. I'm supposed to be comatose, here!"
I just can look at Leo's face for days, how can he even be real.

This movie is such a guilty pleasure...it's so stupid, wild, and over the top and I love it.
Loved watching this with you. I was obsessed with this film back in the day. Which was a Wednesday… I made my high school sweetheart reenact the end scene many a time. Oh the damn melodrama of it all 😏
Fantastic soundtrack, wonderful performances and a smart interpretation of the text, especially for the time. As a teen, I didn’t have the vocabulary to quite understand Shakespeare. Not enough experience to put context together. But Baz created a visual that made it all clear to my young eyes. He made me feel for the fiction. Before this film, I’d just thought of the star crossed lovers as idiots. This film really helped me understand the tragedy of William’s story ♥️

The extremely talented John Leguizamo.
And Toulouse-Lautrec (who was a real artist and aristocrat by birth, was a sucker for redheads, really did have that many names and was called a dwarf even though he wasn't really, it's just that as a result of an accident and an illness when he was a child he had a torso of a man and the legs of a teenage boy) in 'Moulin Rouge' (which he did frequent, apparently he admired the 'devil-may-care' attitude of the dancers and prostitutes who worked there).
I read the book when I was 12 I saw every movie ever made of the book but this remains my top favorite. Especially for Harold Perrineau's Mercutio and John Leguizamo's Tybalt. Those two for me stole the show from the main protagonists! Also the fact that they used the original dialogue in the modern setting was amazing and frankly genius.

the cool guy acting Tybalt played Luigi in Super Mario Brothers, John Leguiziamo. The guy with the pink hair is Jamie Lee Kennedy, who was in the first two Scream films. If you like modern set SHakespeare, you might enjoy Macbeth, which is set in Australia, and stars Sam Worthington in one of his early roles before Avatar and Terminator Salvation.
When we had to watch the movie for class (my teacher didn’t want to read the play either. Well, she got broken up with by her fiancée that day but that’s besides the point), everybody agreed that this play was a comedy even if it’s considered a tragedy. We also called it a prevention film, but I digress
I think the main thing keeping it from being a comedy is the language - no matter how you feel about the story the language is beautiful. I guess thought hat's the point from the movie version of the play 'M. Butterfly' when they were talking about the story of the opera 'Madame Butterfly' and the singer argued 'it is not the story that is so moving, it's the music', basically saying that what the story is is half the battle but what makes or breaks it is how it's told. Of course the story of 'M. Butterfly' (which was based on real events) could easily be a comedy if it was told that way.
When I was 13 I got recruited to be in a test audience for this movie. They hadn't actually filmed every part of it, so some shots were just sketches from the storyboard. Afterwards we all had to stay put and answer questions and fill out a worksheet. I felt so important, to have Hollywood asking my opinion!
Leo never did much for me, but Claire Danes' patented chin-wobble when she's trying to hold back tears, that always makes me ugly cry with snot bubbles and all, in this movie and Little Women.
You might like the Zeffirelli one, once you recover from this. It has another brilliant performance by its Mercutio. I don't know if it's in the actual text of the play, but I always get the impression that movie Mercutios are hopelessly in love with the Romeos. That's the real tragic love story, in my mind.

@@johnny-mnemonic13 No, he wasn't there. No celebrities or crew members at all were there, because I don't live in LA. But it used to be fairly popular in the nineties for studios to do a bit of audience research before finishing a movie, to see if they needed to tweak the ending or anything. And that meant randomly handing out tickets to pre-screenings, so sometimes you'd be leaving a theater and someone would be there giving out the tickets.
I don't think they do it anymore because studios realized that what audiences THINK they want and what they actually want bear almost no relation to each other.

I am old enough that I was in high school in the mid eighties and we watched the 1968 Movie version. For super seriousness I think that one's probably my favorite. But I absolutely love this one as well.

If you want to view another Shakespeare movie, Much Ado About Nothing is good. It has a strong cast with Keanu Reeves and Denzel Washington. Also, another Baz Luhrman movie worth viewing is Moulin Rouge.

I love the story too. My favorite part of the review was you singing at the end! I love Radiohead! The 1990's were known for their corny-ness - it would be cool to see this done again is a "post-Jason Bourne" way - gritty - realistic. Fun review! Thanks!

Personally I prefer the 1968 because it is set in the time period of the play but also the actor and actress who play Romeo and Juliet are amazing. Plus I can kind of buy that they love each other while this version I feel like they just wanna bang lol

@@LakiaJaiTV That one's famous because the director Franco Zefirelli cast two unknowns who'd only ever done stage work in the title roles, a 17 year old Leonard Whiting and a 15 year old Olivia Hussey. He was aiming for a lack of experience with his casting and didn't want professional performances. The idea was that it would be relevant to the 60s youth since they didn't want anything to do with the previous generation especially not their wars. Also famous because of some slight nudity - meaning we see his but and we also see her breasts but only for two seconds.

In fact I think it's set in the 1300s instead of the 1600s. Which I was happy for as a teenager since it meant I didn't have to look at the ugly pants. Still love that movie though. This one as well. And West Side Story. Not sure if I beleive in love at first sight in real life but believe it in a story.

I watched this on Hulu recently and it’s a romantic mess, great movie though.
According to IMDB, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Aaliyah and Natalie Portman were up for the role of Juliet.
The director was uncomfortable with Natalie Portman auditioning as Juliet because she was clearly too young for the role, so was Jennifer Love Hewitt who looked too youthful.
The guy next to Romeo during the wedding is Jesse Bradford, who was in Bring It On, Clockstoppers and Swimfan.
This is honestly the best version of the play. Best acting by far.
Timeless is a thing for a reason, this adapts perfectly.
For me West Side Story is the best adaptation. This is a close second though.

I think the fact that they kept the original text in this modern setting is what made me understand a lot of these words finally.

Small lesson to help you out here:
In the beginning, the ones in charge got sick of all the fighting in the streets, so they made a law saying anyone caught fighting would be executed.
Following this, Tybalt killed Mercutio, and Romeo killed Tybalt.
Romeo was only banished because Tybalt was going to be executed anyway for killing Mercutio.
He better have especially since it was his son
Fun fact: Aaliyah was considered for the role of Juliet, but didn't feel quite ready to step into acting.
She got to be "Juliet" in Romeo Must Die.

Damn this movie would've been next level
There are a LOT of layers to this play. Lord Capulet and Lord Montague are pretty much bored and over their original disagreement but not mature enough to publicly call a truce and manage their younger relatives who continue to fight (i.e. not caring if Romeo crashes the party). This cognitive dissonance leads to everyone’s demise. Romeo, Juliet, Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse are too much in the mix to see the simple solution of going to the Prince (he’s the ruler of Verona in the play) and getting him to publicize and back their marriage immediately after the ceremony. They think they need to not create more waves which at that point, wouldn’t have mattered anyhow. Just a lot of bad, emotional decisions being made. It can’t end any other way, with this cocktail of people and circumstances. That’s why it’s so sad.
I'd hardly say their fathers were bored over the disagreement, both of them were trying to join in the fight and had to be pulled back by their wives (something embarrassing back when it was written). But I agree with you, neither of them were mature. Neither of them came forward and said 'this is ridiculous' and both of them let the younger generation fight their fight. And we see how immature Lord Capulet is later in the play - imagine threatening to disinherit your daughter just because she says that she doesn't want to get married.
This soundtrack was EVERYTHING when this movie came out, it was so popular they released a volume 2 with additional tracks and alt versions. Baz Lurhman knows his soundtracks, before this it was Strictly Ballroom, and after this the epic Moulin Rouge, which also got two volumes

Although very different musically, "Australia", another Luhrman film, has incredible soundtrack and visuals.
There are 2. One has some dialogue. Both are BRILLIANT.
This was back when a soundtrack could be a cultural touchstone. As much as I love streaming music services in terms of access, I miss the before times when you had to seek music out and you shared it physically with others. It was more intentional. I didn't passively consume music, and because of that I think I valued it more...

I have a cousin who was your age when the movie came out and she was obsessed with DiCaprio! I used to spend a lot of time with her, so there was 8 year old me was watching this movie over and over 😂 didn't understand much but LOVED watching Mercutio sing "Young hearts run free"

No matter what anyone tells you- this is the best adaptation. West Side Story is a close second but something about this movie captures the essence of the material way better than any other version.

I’m sorry but for me Romeo and Juliet 1968 will always be the better adaptation. It was too perfect. If you have never watched it I recommend you do ;)

Harold Perrineau really made this movie for me. He is my favorite Mercutio by far! This version is my favorite version - I just love all the ways they made the modern world seem old - like their guns were Sword brand and even the coke ads were in like old english and stuff.
If you want more romance and enemies to lovers you should check out Much Ado About Nothing - another Shakespeare play :P but it's great.

People say the play's about young people being reckless and impulsive and how dangerous it can be. While I can sort of see that a bit of me wants to ask them "And who's idea was the crazy fake death plan anyhow?" And while we're on that matter 'who had to be held back by his wife to stop him from running out to join a fight, and who threatened to throw his daughter into the streets for refusing to marry someone when less than a week ago he was saying that his daughter was too young to get married and that he wouldn't give his consent to the marriage unless it was what she wanted?"

You should watch Gnomeo and Juliet. It has a happy ending. Also, The Princess Bride. They are both good movies.
This play as a whole is Shakespeare saying “love sucks and it can kill you” 😆😆 its a cautionary tale more than a love story in my opinion…*read it in school and wrote several essays lol 😂 * prefer Macbeth anyway lol 😂
And a cautionary tale about letting other people get caught up in your personal problems though that's mostly seen through Mercutio dying even though he wasn't a Montague or a Capulet. As far as R and J go it's a case of not letting your family get involved in your disagreements with someone but in the wider sense mostly regarding M is that no one has the right to let half the town get dragged into your personal problems. But yes there is the part about it being dangerous to love too much - if only the characters who warned against the dangers of rushing into things didn't do the exact opposite of what they just said. Still I guess that could be another way of the play saying 'be careful', even Juliet admitted that it was the wrong way to love even if she couldn't stop it herself.
Macbeth slaps
Rewatching this like 2 decades later, I realize how much this movie warped my expectations and understandings of relationships and love. And largely unintended too!
The 90's were a wack time. Hella miss em'.
A perfect example of teenage maximalism. This story would not have worked like that with two adults. They would have come up with something smarter than "fake my death". Like maybe talk with parents? It would have been really beneficial for both families if the heirs were to marry. Sure, at first the dads would be pissed, but nothing settles family grudges better than a grandchild.
how can you talk to your parents when they've just threatened to throw you out into the streets for refusing to marry someone they chose for you - when just a few days ago her dad was saying 'my daughter's too young, give her some time to fall in love with you'. And the fake death plan wasn't their idea, it was an adults idea, an adult they both went to for advice. he could've gone forward and announced the marriage but he didn't, and in the original play left her in the family tomb. he could've refused to marry them on the grounds that it's wrong to marry without parental consent and that they're both top young anyway. There is no adult in this story who acts rationally or calmly - they just talk about it and then they go and do the exact opposite of what they just advised. We saw that right from the start when a fight breaks out between two groups of youths (servants in the households) and rather than stepping it in and breaking it up, they both try to run in and join the fight even though they're way too old to fight.
That would never even work in those days what your parents said was law regardless of how you felt about it it was either that or get disowned. You have no money and be poor and choose who you love or be rich and have all the money you want or they could do worse to you they could just lock you away and leave you locked up and act like you disappeared and ran away like you never existed. They did those kinds of things to. Besides, if they ran away and pretended she was dead everybody still thought she was dead. They get her in Romeo gonna live somewhere else and lived completely different and lived happily ever after, but the whole idea of the story is fate decided to end them because the parents kept fighting. It was to teach them a lesson, and in Shakespeare’s time this was a thing that was very prevalent where lovers would kill themselves so they could be together, so he just put it in a play because it was one of the current epidemics at the time

11:42 Exactly, that's the whole point. Their fathers are enemies but because of that, it somehow means that their whole families have to be enemies to each other. Even the servants have to be enemies to each other. And whether it's a family affair or a personal affair, it should be confined to that but no, the entire city gets dragged into their business and their problems. Standers-by get hurt or their property gets destroyed because an argument between two old men got started up again by the younger generation.
Mercutio belongs to neither family, he's just a friend of the Montagues who got invited to Capulets party because his cousin is the chief of police (confirmed in the play - originally Paris is supposed to be another cousin of theirs, re the prince's line of 'I for winking at your discord have lost a brace of kinsmen), and even though the rivalry had nothing to do with him he still got killed.
Best moral of the story I've seen is from the Asterix comic book 'Asterix and the Great Divide' which is both a happier version of Romeo and Juliet but also a reference to the Berlin Wall - two chiefs of a Gaulish village were elected and they dug a divide in the middle of the village to demonstrate who voted for whom - where just before the ending we get "Oh for goodness sakes we've had enough of this! If you have to fight for chieftainship keep it between the two of you" and "QUarrell if you must but leave the rest of the village out of it, they've had enough of your squabbles".
Basically - you don't like someone, that's fine, that's your business, he don't like you, that's between the two of you and is both your and his business. But don't drag everyone else into your problems!

This hand's down the best Romeo and Juliet movie ever
Please watch the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet because that version of the film is better to watch for the story than the 1996 version that you just watch. I am not saying that the 1996 version is bad, but just saying that watching the 1968 version will give you more feels to the characters.

Personally I really don't like the story of Romeo and Juliet, not because it was a tragedy but because two immature and overzealous teenagers getting into a relationship that I wasn't comfortable with. This story put the term "love at first sight" to a very disturbing level and if you going to make a love story deliver the couple in a way where I'll actually root for them

The story of Romeo and Juliet isn't about True love it's about young love and the effects of prejudice. Think about it Romeo and Juliet saw each other, fell in love,got married and had sex all in the span of a few days.
And despite constantly saying how much they love each other. They don't really share any loving and intimate moments. They never talk about their likes and dislikes, there interest, hobbies and dreams.
They just talk about how great it is being "in love" which isn't enough to build a relationship with. Romeo and Juliet were just infatuated with each and because of the parents prejudice that kept trying to keep them apart. Honestly, my favorite is a movie called "Shakespeare in Love" 1998. During the time when Shakespeare created Romeo and Juliet. Such a fantastic movie!!
Our teacher showed us the trailer for this movie in 8th grade to see if we were interested in watching this version and someone said it looked like a cross between the play and The Outsiders. (we didn't watch it)
There's also a modern version of Hamlet that's kinda like this that I watched in 12th grade.
John Leguizamo, aka Tybalt, is a phenomenal actor. I mean, he started off as a stand up comic and his first break in films tried to capitalize on his comedic style, which bombed horribly. However, as a serious actor, he is incredible! I love him in every serious roll he does!
