- Dennis talks with Techno Empire about being mentored by Doug Sax of The Mastering Lab and how he elevated his recording and mixing from Yamaha NS-10's to The Mastering Lab modified Tannoy Gold Speakers and Steve Hazeltine modded Yamaha Amp.
This series is really great. Seems like a good guy.
I really wish I could have met Doug Sax, and Lincoln Mayorga; The Mastering Lab and Sheffield Lab redefined how good recorded music could sound.
Are they alnicos like my 1978 Cheviots??? Or like the old golds??
I don't know. There's a ton of different tech and options. Your particular ear will gravitate to other things. I understand having a grounded reference for mastering, but there's a literal galaxy of options and stratospheric expense if you so choose. Is any of it "better" than this mastering set? Only one way to find out really. Certainly a mastering console as represented in this video is far from the best listening environment. Dedicated rooms exist for a reason. I also think having "This the absolute best and no better exist" attitude is a real lost opportunity to hear what might be better.
Whats the longevity of the drivers ?
Unfortunately only vintage now. Haven't been made for decades and decades.
new active versions just released this week, will have to see if they live up to the old standards
