I played this song for my stepson's funeral after he died of Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 12. As this song was playing, pictures of his childhood happy times with the family were flashing across the video screen for the audience. It was very touching for all and still brings a tear to my eyes more than 19 years later. To me this song is far deeper than just expressing love for a partner, its also about being an individual and someone special within the lives of others.

I know I'm late to the party with this comment, but ... here in Australia, we still hear the chorus "Do what you wanna do, be what you wanna be, yeah" played from time to time in TV commercials for various things. In fact, at the moment, the national public broadcaster (the ABC) is playing that chorus in one of its channel promotions. This song came out when I was a teenager, so it's quite "contemporary" to me, but it amazes me that it's still being used fifty years on and heard incidentally on TV by people whose parents weren't even born when it came out.

    • @allymayful

AND tragically, almost impossible to get international recognition. We were so proud of our music, but felt very offended that the international market showed no interest in anything from down under, as if we didn't exist. AND more sadly, our market wasn't big enough to sustain all our wonderful bands.
BUT it is so good when our music gets discovered here on YT by music fans all over the world and they 'rave' about it, just like we did and do. Stupid US record companies, and radio stations that couldn't be told, what we thought was a real good thing.

Played this song in acoustic duo for years. Always a crowd favourite, The songs of a time, a generation , our teenage years, are slowly loosing there owners and Masters but are left behind for us to enjoy. RIP Jim Keays

Occasionally, during my lifetime I have met a male who is just a really nice, kind person with no ulterior motives. Glen was one of these people. Way back in 1968 when I was just 15, I had the good fortune of meeting Glen, who at the time had a tiny bit of fame which had not gone to his head. Over the years, have followed his increasing fame which always had the important ingredients faith and kindness. Deepest sympathy to Glen's wife and children and his good friend John Farnham. 🦋♥️🌹

And that's where he should have stayed - making music not making money. Heart and talent is in the right place at the right time. Sorry

OMG - why have I never heard this before. Just listened to this and Future of our Nation showing this to be one of the great progressive bands, skilful in soft and heavy. And what musical talent! Thanks for the post I am going to hear some more.

The Master's Apprentices were a great band and played at my high school Social/Prom for the night. I think we had booked them early because they were pretty big by the time they played at our local hall. A fantastic night, we were all into the music then.

Awesome! This 60s revival band of mine in the 80's tried to cover this song but it was just beyond us - we were just kids, really, & we were biting off way more than we could chew. We all so admired those guys - total legends! I was fortunate enough to see the Masters perform live in two reunion concerts. I met Jim Keyes and Doug Ford in Mildura in 1999 for the CD promo tour and Jim stayed to talk to me over a beer (he won't remember) but he shook my hand and sign my copy. Top bloke, top band!
