LIVING IN A CHILD'S DREAM (1967) by the Masters Apprentices

- The Masters Apprentices were an Australian rock/pop/beat group from the sixties. They were fronted by singer Jim Keays, and the main songwriter at the outset was Mick Bower, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist. Their early singles, 'Undecided' and 'Buried and Dead' were garage band type tracks, and this song contrasted with those, with Bower writing a ballad expressing a longing of going to back to the simplicity and wonder of childhood. It's considered a psychedelic classic, although apparently Bower did not have this in mind and did not consider it a drug song. The other members were not sure that the song suited the band, but by the time they put it out, psychedelia had arrived and it became a big hit.
By the time of this single, two original members had left, drummer Brian Vaughton, and lead guitarist Rick Morrison. They were replaced by Steve Hopgood and Tony Sommers respectively, who both play on this track. Sommers in particular does a nice guitar solo in the middle and at the outro. The other member was Gavin Webb on bass.
The great music site 'Milesago' has this background on the song: "Living in A Child's Dream" was recorded at Bill Armstrong's famous South Melbourne studio at 100 Albert Park Rd, and as with all their Astor cuts, it was (nominally) produced by staff producer Dick Heming although his input, says Keays, was mainly limited to watching the clock to ensure sessions started and finished on time! Most of the real production was done by Armstrong's renowned house engineer Roger Savage, who before leaving England had recorded Dusty Springfield, the Rolling Stones' debut single "Come On", and produced the backing track for The Easybeats' breakthrough hit "She's So Fine". Another important factor was the presence of Molly Meldrum -- Keays' book reveals that Molly attended the session and had quite an influence on the eventual outcome; in fact this single might be considered his first production. Released in August, at the peak of the 'Summer Of Love' psychedelic explosion, it became one of their biggest successes, reaching No.9 in the national charts. Both "Living In A Child's Dream" and "Undecided" ranked in the Top 5 Australian Singles of 1967, and "Living In A Child's Dream" was voted Australian Song of the Year.
As there is no video, I have done a slideshow video for the song, using mainly images of this line up of the Masters. I have also put some images of Mick Bower at the end as a tribute to one of Australia's great songwriters.
(Aztec Music have released a remastered two cd issue of the early Bower version of the Masters).

Such a great song. Australia has a wealth of great music, a shame that it wasn't recognised internationally.
On the other hand, it's why some of our greatest talent was so accessible to so many of us to enjoy , without paying the earth to go to a concert. Look what happened when bands like INXS became world renowned. Suddenly every preditor in the business wanted to own a piece of them and drive them into the breakdown that Michael and so many other world renowned artists are/have been. Literally driven to an early grave.
I'm so glad I was able to just pay $20 to get into a club and see several bands like INXS, Icehouse and the Reels, all in one place on the same night.
@@barbararees604 oh god, lucky you. I'm from Mackay and never got the chance to see them. I believe they did go there at their peak but I was away.
I also think its interesting that there is a new found real love for our former bands and music.
And its nice that we werent too influenced by the US and England and thats why our music is distinctive.

I recall listening to this song, and many of The Master's Apprentices songs..an awesome Adelaide band and the best time to be a teenager with music like this to groove to. A great time in my life...lucky we had the best music of all time.!!!!!

This song was actually written by William (Bill) Hunt, my grandfather. He was one of the drummers in the masters apprentices. He told me that the band actually didn't like this song and thought it wouldn't be very popular. My Rock n Roll poppy as I call him believes he isn't very talented, I'd show him all of these comments of people saying this is their favourite song though people have been mislead to think that someone else wrote it.
It captures the feeling of 1967 for me :)
The Master's only had three drummer's Brian,Steve and Colin,Steve played the drums on this single and Mick Bower wrote the song,sorry to say but i think your Grandfather is telling a little white lie
Only last night on You Tube saw a realitively recent interview with Mick Bower where he clearly defined the night he wrote it while the other band members were out at a party. They were performing in Melbourne at the time. I think you may have been mislead by someone living in a childs dream
Yeah, I am pretty partial to the fact that Mick wrote this...don't wanna hurt the girl. But everyone who was around at that time contributed in one way or another.

I remember hearing this in the 70s and every time I hear it, I remember that joy and freedom I felt as a young child in the 70s and the joy of bumping into Jim in a supermarket in Melbourne. He was just so lovely. Thanks Masters Apprentices.

Many thanks to Wilson Mcphert for taking the time and trouble to upload this magical stuff. The legendary DJ from 3KZ Stan Rofe was a huge MA fan and waxed lyrical on one of their albums. These guys had a combination of rock and romantic music that took me away to a magical world when I was a teeny bopper. Fabulous memories and all the more piognant since Jim's passing.

50 years later, this is the best track from the Masters Apprentices, it hasn't dated, and is still as fresh now. So it is a classic. Beautiful blend of lyrics and music, with a great arrangement. Wonderful lead guitar with psychedelic feel....
I actually preferred War (or 'Hands of Time')....but the one time that I saw them live they were great!

Whilst I do appreciate this song, it doesn't hold a candle to Turn Up Your Radio. That's the best from Masters Apprentices in my humble opinion. But we each like what we each like 😊

I grew up listening to your dad at every scool dance we had. They are a legend and they deserve to be. FB's recent game of most influencial albums, well your dad's band got talked about a lot and led me here to find this and their other songs. I thought they might be hard to find being aussie and I wondered if we filmed it. How good is it that they are here and any one can watch their classics and see just how good they were.

In 1967-1968 I was 14-15 years old when I first began listening to "Living in a Child's Dream" in Canberra as a young teenager.
I taught myself the plectrum guitar and how to read music on my own in 1966 and then enrolled at the Canberra School of Music in 1967 to study the classical guitar.
In Year 10, aged 16, I got together with a school friend called Bruce Stewart and we formed a group called "The Insect".
Before Bruce left Canberra in the early 1970's to pursue his rock guitar career in Melbourne, I kept going with my classical guitar.
During our later high school years I taught Bruce the classical guitar and he was very greatful and much inspired by the scope and beauty of this instrument.
In Melbourne from 1978, Bruce played with Jim Keays in a Group called The Keays, until he got ill around 1980-1981.
While I played with Bruce and The Insect group I can remember playing the lead intro to Living in a Child's Dream on my classical guitar. It was a great time to listen to much innovative rock music from this era.
I now live in Adelaide and teach mainly the piano at WEA (adult education)

Hi Emilio, I am your vintage and also was in Canberra at that time. I also taught myself guitar and learned this song off the record (no tabs in those days). I learned the guitar solo but did not realise till later it was two lead guitars playing harmonies, and I learned it playing two notes together at the same time. As for the School of Music, many years later I was working near it, and used to go their library at lunch times as they were one of the few places in Australia that had all the back copies of Guitar Player Magazine (which I used to buy myself). I was in heaven! By the way, SOM guitar teacher Dave Kain was in the class ahead of me at Dara. Thanks for commenting. I posted this video on my wilson mcphert channel. @@michaelbackhouse6758 Thanks for your reply, Michael. I went to Telopea Park High and I knew Timothy (not Dave)Cain from the Canberra School of Music in Manuka. I was taught by Don Andrews and Sadie Bishop. I began teaching at Tuffins in Londsdale Street aged 16 until I got my licence and then taught all over Canberra. One of my top classical guitar students was Richard Strasser who went to Christian Brothers College.
I still play this solo on guitar. Good practice doing those 2 note runs at the beginning and then a failry straightforward scale, which sounds great in context.

I ran a local radio station here in our little town for 18 years with my son...( NZ) and played this song quite often. Good feedback from the song to... Just a terrific song.

Great band Doug Ford great guitarist used to see them regularly at Biting Eye and Festival Hall. Jim Keays great front man for a brill band.
I remember telling my parents I was sick, then slipping out the window,, off to the Q Club, and hearing all these bands. Went real well, till the night I climbed back in the window, went to pull the blankets up and there's mother and I was BUSTED! Where have you been, and smelling of alcohol.

This song featured in the new show "Love Child" which is awesome. I remember hearing this song, I was 11 at the time. Turn up your radio was another good M.A. tune. They wore Blue and the Zoot wore Pink. Both great Aussie Bands. Check out the Zoots' Elenore Rigby cover.
Wendy, if I may, the Valentines wore blue. For those who don't know, check out videos of those days with Bon Scott wearing a blue frilly shirt, haha. And people used to bag Zoot... I saw 'em a couple of times and they were excellent!

I'm currently playing a Best of Masters CD and track 10 is a LIVE version of FUTURE OF OUR NATION.
When I was 10 yrs old I got the compilation album EXPLOSIVE HITS 1971 and FUTURE OF OUR NATION really grabbed my attention.
The year before I heard TURN UP YOUR RADIO and my brother and sisters and myself would take turns jumping off the lounge when Jim Keays would unleash those famous screams. Well, somebody had to put the needle on the record, it was 1970. LOL!!
Glenn will always be remembered as an icon of Australian music and the man that re-ignited the career of John Farnham.
Glenn mortgaged his house to fund the manifestation of WHISPERING JACK, the biggest selling Australian album of all time.
With a heavy heart, I send my condolences to Glenn's family, friends and his supporters

In the RAAF in the late 60's a mate wanted to go see a band ..enjoyed later found out my mate was Jim Keays brother and the band were MA.. my brush with fame.

One of my favs
Used to sit up with guitar in hand to learn every note. The psychedelic era was full of fine detail and a wide imagination. The Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing" has similar structure, images and guitar lines

The first Aussie band with Phycodelic music
They played at Head quarters in Adelaide regularly back in the early 79's.
Headquarters, now that certainly brings back memories. Multiple levels, each with their own form of entertainment.
Basement, live music, everybody acting cool and nodding heads while checking out how awesome the black lights make the whites of their clothes look
Ground floor, entry, exit, drinks, male chest puffing, girls only challenge to meet upstairs
1st floor, open catfights, 99% male audience hoping for clothes ripping off (winners move up to next level)
2nd floor, snogging with occasional interruptions from revenge seeking 1st floor losers
3rd floor, hmm, I never got up there
