Dani __ he's had tons of material for years. The whole band had tons ready before serj wanted to go solo
His idea of what a new album is is probably just 20 Lonely Day type songs anyways. Guy is all about himself. You can hear him taking over in their last two albums. The lyrics changed and he gave himself way more vocal parts.. too many, in my opinion.
Daron wrote pretty much all of their songs from all their albums. You aren't a system fan if you hate Daron.
The material he has is pretty bad, his super interesting technical and progressive songs are Hypnotize/Mesmerize seemed to be a fluke, the new Scars stuff is pretty derivative and musically boring. Sure he has plenty of material they could adapt into a system album, but it's clear they would have been bad albums.
all these guys thinking they are "real" SOAD fans when *they* are actually the superficial Serj fanboys...Daron didn't just start to be main writer on Hypnotize/Mezmerize, he's been that since their very first album. Serj almost exclusively wrote lyrics (not by himself) and Hypnotize/Mezmerize was just the time he made even less of an effort to put himself into the writing process. I might just want to add that Mezmerize was also their most critically acclaimed album.
I come across like a hater towards Serj when in fact I'm just aware that he's never been the songwriter of the band and I'm super annoyed by ignorant morons who say Daron's solo stuff doesn't sound like SOAD when in reality it just doesn't sound like Serj.
Its tough when you got 2 songwriters in a band.. Daron's always been the wild metal guy and Serj is the more introspective hippie of the group.

Serj contributed to the song writing and lyrics quite a lot until the last two albums. For example Daron wrote the music but Serj wrote the vocal melodies, but by mesmerize/hypnotize Daron was writing the music AND the vocal melodies and the lyrics, and Serj was just adapting those melodies with his voice.
personally I enjoy Scars on Broadway just as much as SOAD...at least from a songwriting perspective.(especially "Dictator") I know the majority thinks Serj is the better singer, and from a technical standpoint there's nothing to argue about that. But subjectively I've always prefered Daron's vocals as both of them have absolutely unique voices and I thought Daron's high notes were the main reason their vocal harmonics sound so damn good.
Scars is not as popular *because* Serj isn't with them obviously, but that's mainly because Serj's name recognition is much higher than Daron's and he isn't as advertised as much as Serj.
When Serj made "Empty Walls" every SOAD fan I know instantly knew about it, but I've just found out about Scars on Broadway a year ago. Now I count "Lives" and "Till the End" amongst my favorite "SOAD" songs which is more than I can say about Serj's solo stuff. I may want to add though that it's still absolutely solid, but I mean really amongst the best of the best

Serj is what made me fall in love with the band, his way of singing and expressing himself is very inspiring and if he wants to do something different with his life I totally respect and support that, I love his solo stuff, If he eventualy wants to go back to the band that's fine, but I don't think we should be mad at his life choices
(I still miss the band, but it would be worse if he was forcing himself to sing stuff he doesn't like)

@@JavierPwnsSerj was always the primary writer when it came to lyrics. Daron wanted to step on Serj's toes during the Mez/Hyp era out of jealousy. I can understand it, considering Daron wrote most of the instrumentals, but Serj being the vocalist got more of the attention.
In either case, Daron's ego got in the way. You can even hear how much more he wanted to take over vocal duties from Serj on those last couple albums. Serj's vocals were always better, and Daron was always a beast on guitar. If Daron had stayed in his place, where everything worked well, they'd probably still be together.

This is very sad to hear as a die hard system of a down fan. The cant make new record without serj cause that would be worse then the band breaking up entirely. Serj has a very unique vocal style that no one can replace him.

Serj should have talk with Jonathan Davis, from Korn, about this. Davis stopped liking heavier music, just like Serj. He fell in love with electric music, which is why The Path of Totality has a lot of dubstep and The Paradigm shift has a lot of electric as well. Everyone else in Korn wanted a heavier album and Davis wasn't on board for a while. Eventually he gave it a try and released The Serenity of Suffering, which ended up being pretty damn heavy. Later, Davis stated that he forgot how much he actually loves heavier music. Serj should AT LEAST try doing some demo's.

That’s the funny part, it sounds like Daren is insanely jealous and resentful because he wants this life so bad but serj was just blessed with the voice and composer of a god without from what it sounds like… even caring for it that much.

Serg voice is irreplaceable and the band as a whole wouldn’t survive without it. He should be getting the same as him but he’s actually a nice human being and is advocating for a fair split 4 ways.
Just seeing Daron and serj in their solo careers you can see a definite difference in their creativity. Daron is cocaine crazy, serj is quite and political. Which honestly when they combine those two makes soad great, but they both have to compromise.

Serj adds to the magic of System. I love how they have heavy music and more melodic. System albums are magic because of all the differences.

I’m glad that Serj is following his own path and same goes for Daron, I do hope that someday they do create one more album to sort of end it with a bang. Just one more man.
Serj DOES want to make new music with SOAD.
But,
He wants EQUAL PAY and WRITING CREDITS for ALL MEMBERS of the band.
He says that and yet the entire rest of the band seems happy with the way things have been in terms of pay and writing credits, especially considering Daron has written almost all of the music since the very beginning and has written his share of the songs as well.
It's fine for Serj to want more creative input but to say that he's holding out for the rest of the band to receive equal pay seems a little disingenuous since they're all ready to roll and are just waiting on him.

Serg had input on SOME guitar and definitely some lyrics but everyone forgets the Fuse interview where they BOTH say they are duo lead singers, that’s why they harmonize like crazy? That’s why whenever you watch their life performances surge barely plays the guitar, usually only for a few parts and then put it down , the “problem” was that Serg wasn’t that interested in heavy music anymore , lol that’s it. I think they had the perfect mix of hard and soulful music personally. I love that the harmonising in their best songs was done as a sort of reprieve from the harsh tones. It framed them perfectly to stand out and shine as the strongest and most memorable part of the songs.
Lost in Hollywood’s harmony is my favourite piece of soad music followed closely by radio/videos.
All of their best music has the ballads/harmonising sections, but they wouldn’t shine so vividly if they weren’t a juxtaposition to the rest of the song, it’s what makes them so unique and unforgettable.
What will we see first? A Tool or System of a Down album first? I’m not getting any younger or holding my breath

I can see why tbh. Mezmerize and Hypnotize were very Daron centric, and Serj may have found that to be overbearing at times. Daron seemed to be the dominant creative force behind those albums.

Fun Stuff, actually, Daron dominated the first few albums more. If you listen to early interviews from the 90s, Serj says that Daron composes most of the music and he writes the lyrics to them. Vicinity of Obscenity is a very Serj song. BYOB is not. Look at Serj's first solo album. It had more in common with Baroque music than it did with heavy metal. Daron has always been the driving force behind System, but because Serj writes the lyrics and is the frontman, it was perceived as being his brainchild. This is not the case.

Stellar Yugioh Well, he did gave answer. At least now we all know why they didn't record anything. And I do hope, they will find a compromise and we will hear a new music from them.
He's already said it without saying it. There will not be another SOAD album with all original members. If they make another album, it will have to be with another singer. In the meantime, all band members can continue profiting by touring.
Just make two albums then, one geared toward Daron’s artistic point of view, and one from Serj. Problem solved. Everybody wins.

We don't know what really is going on with the band. I'm sure it's really between Serj and Daron and my theory is that Serj doesn't agree with Daron's role as an equal singer in the band since he's already a guitarist that already gets an equally attention, or Daron must call the majority of the shots since he's the producer of the albums.

I think Serj had a pretty solid reason to be out. I guess I never realized that he didn't care for heavier music. That said, and it's sad why we know this, he still pulls it off very well!

I respect this band so much and how maturely they handle these issues. They don't want to cause any drama or take it to a personal level, it's purely on a professional level, as it should be.
I love SOAD and was saddened to learn of this contention beween Daron and Serj. Before simply agreeing with everything Daron said is factual, remember please Serj also has his side and the truth is probably in between. Listen to Serj's side also in a Rock Feed video. Consider, too, what John had to say about the entire band having a part. I hope all issues can be resolved between the bandmates regardless of whether or not a new album emerges. I also hope the fracturing within the SOAD community is kept to a minimum over this.
I hate to be blunt, but if Serj's heart isn't in System anymore then he needs to just say so and leave. I adore him, but his wishy-washyness is holding the rest of the band back. And I don't want him to half-ass an album just because he's pressured into it either.

Justin Ruark Well Daron wrote almost everything himself since the first album and it's not that Serj just wanted to do more for the band, it seemed he wanted to change the whole direction of the band. SOAD always had some softer songs so the only reason I see their argument making sense is if Serj wanted the band to go much more in that direction or even entirely.
People might get mad at me for saying this, but I believe that Serj's lack of interest is visible at their live shows...

As a long time great & loyal fan of SOAD, I really don't pay a heed to whether they release another album or not. What they've done together have been done. Now I'm truly enjoying both Serj's and Daron's individual music and loved all their albums released so far. We've got two big talented musicians out of one band (like Metallica & Megadeth). Let them do whatever they're doing comfortably. I'll eat anything they feed. They both are legends. No doubt 'bout that!

Wow...JUST WOW...This is weird I knew it was serj holding them back but holy shit! Finally someone said something about him but the thing that surprised me was that he didn't want to make mesmerize and hypnotize I mean Imagine if those 2 didn't exist they will only have 3 albums and my favorite song B.Y.O.B. wouldn't exist.
Serj has had several years to spread his creative wings and pursue his own solo career blending his music with art and poetry and hes been so successful. Maybe now hes had the chance to do his own thing, hes got it all out of his system perhaps soon he will get into the recording studio with the boys and get on with that album weve been waiting so long for.
It would be sad not to hear new System, however, the man deserves to make his own decisions. We all do. So as I will always hold on for hope that we get new jams, I am grateful for the amazing music that we have gotten.

What needs to happen is a compromise. Either in the form of alternating styles between songs on the same album, or blending heavier with lighter in each song. This is my all time favorite band, they will never be replaced, I’m ready for new music. I’m a fan of both styles

Oh brother! Toxicity and Mezmerize are my favorite albums and to hear that Serj did not want to record Mezmerize I felt sad. I listen to Mezmerize over and over. Hopefully they can see eye to eye on this record.

I beilieve that serj can and should be willing to continue music the way he has done for years i personally love the music he has done he has raw talent and is not replaceable by anyone I respect that he doesnt wanna go harder but maybe he could try it and if it dont work then dont go further with it and in turn write music the way he was doing so

Robzilla_92 I think it is a really good album, especially when you look at what else was coming out around that time. I wasn't a huge fan of Hypnotize, though. Toxicity is still my favorite, but Memorize is a close second.

My favorite band, that I will always love for their unique and distinct style, my fellow brothas hear my cry as I say that System of a Down...has been dead since 2005. Oh and idea Daron, RELEASE THE UNRELEASED TRACKS, Marmalade, Johnny, and oh god there are so many that the world needs to hear.

We are extremely lucky mofos for our fans to want a record out of our ragtag misfit of a crew after all these years, at times demanding it. This of course has led to numerous rumors about the band and our inability to make a record together coupled with he said/he said excerpts from each of our interviews in the past and present at times by sensationalism seeking media who are in no way, let’s say, changing the world for the better themselves 🙂
So I’m going to attempt to clarify things for all of our sake once and for all hopefully without vilifying anyone in the process.
It is true that I and only I was responsible for the hiatus Soad took in 2006. Everyone else wanted to continue at the same pace to tour and make records.
I didn’t. Why? For numerous reasons:
1. Artistic: I’ve always felt continuing to do the same thing with the same people over time is artistically redundant even for a dynamic outfit like ours. By that time I felt that I needed a little time to do my own work. I wasn’t discounting restarting the process with the band later.
2. Egalitarianism: When we first started out our creative input and financial revenue splits were close to equal within the band. By the time Mezmerize/Hypnotize came around we were at the diametrically opposite end on both with Daron controlling both the creative process and making the lions share of publishing not to mention wanting to be the only one to do press.
3. I wanted to leave the band before Mezmerize/Hypnotize for these developing reasons. This is why I personally don’t feel as close to the music on those records. There were songs I wanted to bring in but was hampered by unkept promises coupled by my own passivity at the time.
Time went by, we all did our own thing. My solo career gave me the confidence as a songwriter and later composer to re-visit Soad from a position of strength at first just to tour and enjoy each others’ company, which we did and do so still.
I knew they wanted to make a record, but given the past I was hesitant. At times there would be emotionally tinged outbursts by one band member or another mostly blaming me for the band’s inactivity.
After a long time thinking and processing, about 2 years ago, I went to the guys with a proposition for a way forward as a band.
I wanted to rectify the wrongs of the past and establish a way we can all be happy moving forward so I recommended the following:
1. Equal creative input: by this time I had released 5 of my own records and was a better songwriter musically and Daron was getting better as a lyricist, so I said let’s each bring in 6 songs that all band members approve fully and work on them along with songs or riffs from Shavo.
2. Equal publishing split: I personally feel that a band is an equal partnership and finances should reflect that.
3. Directors cut: whomever wrote the song makes the final decision after exhausting all types of ideas from anybody within the group. I did this because in the past, I’d bring in a song that would be morphed into an undesirable version that I myself would withdraw from consideration.
4. Develop a new concept or theme so that it’s not just a record but a full experience.
(Obviously I’m omitting many other details here like agreeing on the “sound” of a new record which we couldn’t do either as we went back and forth with songs by Daron and myself. I remember sending lots of notes on songs by Daron, mostly from his current Scars on Broadway record, most of which I didn’t consider applicable to Soad etc, they played around with some of my songs-suffice to say I think we tried).
Ultimately I had to draw a line in the sand because I knew I could never be happy going back to how things used to be within the band.
And as we couldn’t see eye to eye on all these points we decided to put aside the idea of a record altogether for the time being.
My only regret is that we have been collectively unable to give you another Soad record. For that I apologize.

This seems reasonable, the man wants equality and felt like he wants getting what he wanted out of the art. You can't blame him for not feeling up to it .I'd say no to, shit when you make a decent living and are an artist, do what you want.

I'm sad SOAD is my favorite band since i was 13 (right now i'm 32) i'm still listening this albums included Soad, Toxicity, Steal This Album, Mesmerize and Hypnotize.
They should just compromise on an evolution to their sound and cater a bit to Serj and the lighter direction he might want to take. The music would be more inspired if they worked together on something they all agree on anyway. Systems greatest moments weren't just their heavy ones
Yeah, but you have no idea what direction serj wants to take it. What if he just wanted them to write a pop album or an entire folk album?
its system of a down we are talking about. they draw influence from so many different directions. im sure they could mix in what serj wants to do and still have SOAD elements and still sound like SOAD.

jacob portillo unfortunately a band with multiple people in charge needs compromise. Even more unfortunately, serj is very bad at compromise
When Daron says System has a certain way of making albums that mostly everyone except Serj wants to keep in line with, I suspect he's talking about how he writes most of the music usually, and how Serj wants to change that and bring in more music of his own from now on. And if that's the case, I think Daron should really just let up a bit and let Serj do that to at least some degree, because judging by his solo output, Serj is a great songwriter and can write music worthy of the band's status (there are numerous songs on 'Harakiri' that could've easily fit on a System album). Sure, it breaks tradition, and the way things typically get done, but I don't think it would compromise the quality of the album in the least, and quality should take precedence here. As long as there's no problem in that department, and no one's being too controlling, there shouldn't be a problem at all.
Also: 'Question!' , written by Serj musically and lyrically, is easily one of SOAD's best songs, and may be the best song off of Mezmerize, further proving the strength of Serj's songwriting.

Better off just not making another album if the idea is to go pop! I didn't get irritated as much by pop in the past but these past 3-5 years have seen every band go the same pop direction which all sounds the same and then they say they aren't a Rock band they are an "alternative" band. Alternative has just become a label to explain why there is a constant form of heavy pop sounds and production being shoehorned into the music just with the band writing the lyrics.

Pretty sure they meant Serj wanted to go more classical/orchestral/etc... within the metal genre. Holy Mountains was one of the few songs he wrote on their last album and I'm pretty sure after reading his response that this is the direction he suggested SOAD should take, which is in no way bad or "pop". That being said, I also like Daron's "in your face" songs so I'm conflicted here.
I'd rather them never make music again than to see them go that route.
Nour Hassoun I can see that because of the elements they used on the Toxicity album.. it gets murky when there are labels involved because art blends with science (in the sense of statistics) in an unloving way. Markets need to be fed.. quotas need to be met.. ultimately the art and artist are compromised.
It would be cool if they came to an agreement.. like a "fuck it" clause so to speak.. where they just go i to the studio and let whatever happens happen.. and if they come out with their Sgt Pepper, well, "fuck it"! release it!
I love some arguably pretty crappy albums by some bands standards, so no matter what some of us will eat it up.
I hate when bands do that like Paramore, I like their first 3 albums and their last 2 are unlistenable

Well I think it's totally Serj but I completely understand as to why. He said in one interview that he only believes the band is a temporary thing, and if you look at what he's been doing over the years he doesn't want to stick to metal, he's been doing orchestras, Jazz, rock, and even producing music for movies. He's just not into alternative metal anymore which is fine, but idk if they really need him all that much anymore. Don't get me wrong he's a great musician but I've heard a lot of people say Daron could be the brains behind the band, and after to listen to SOB he is totally capable of writing good music on his own, maybe not up there with Chop Suey! Or BYOB but even in SOAD he was behind amazing songs like Lonely Day and ATWA. I don't even think Serj would be pressured into a new album by his fans anyway, not that he doesn't care but you can't put pressure on an artist like that. If you've seen his recent interviews he's not doing metal or even necessarily 100% music anymore, which I think is great but there isn't any hope for a new album at this point.
Frankly as much as I love SOAD. Its time for fans to give it up.
If you are all looking for the original band to not only get back together but also to create the same sort of music they used to with the same fire and crazy-cookie-SOADness that they used to thats not going to happen.
Lets face it, even before this drama I could have told you that SOAD as we knew them were done.
Heck it was clear during Mesmerize and Hypnotize that they were. And I love those albums. For what they were/are.
But for one thing Serj isnt the same singer and his solo stuff shows that hes trying to be something else.
So this video doesnt surprise me at all. Its more like a "no duh" moment.
Should they keep going with a new singer? Ummmm maybe? But whether that will be a smart move or not I dont know.
If they did, they would have to recreate the band, because to try and be who they were with a new singer would be a bad idea.
Just listening to their music and how he sings along with how they play it honestly makes sense. Not dissing the music obviously, it does seem though that he is on his own path.
Hypnotize, and Mezemorize were actulay about when I feel the lost what ever mad me like them.
I've given up on SOAD so I just go with Scars On Broadway, Daron is my favorite

I think I agree. I love serj but he can't just demand the entire band only do things his way or no record. He can do his own thing on his solo work which he is still doing and can still do without or witho soad on the side. He needs to just step down for awhile maybe
I think that they just want to play system songs with him, they could just hire a new singer but it wouldn't be the same, so they want to continue, but they don't want to release a new album without him, they're friends after all
But he should still be able to have an input on the band's sound... why is his opinion not important?

I've had a feeling for a long time, that Serj just doesn't want to perform things like SOAD anymore... Even the newer live shows I have seen, seems like Serj just doesn't really have his "soul" behind the performances...
For SOAD, there are 2 possibilities:
1. Quit
2. Replace Serj
Rest of the band has enough music making skills to go on. But how does one replace Serj and still be SOAD... It's possible, though, I guess...

You know how this will end if you did, daron already tried to make another band and failed, Serj has many solo albums and is doing well. No reason for that him to make another bad soad album like the last two they made before he said fuck it.
Yes, I did follow them. I think the first Scar's album is ok and Serj's Elect The Dead is excellent. The rest after that were less interesting to me, Harakiri has a couple good tunes... You mean Mezmerize and Hypnotize? Might be just me, but I happen to rank them very, very high actually :)
But yes, Serj has been more successful in his solo endeavors.

Miika Suominen I feel I rank them highly due to nostalgia, Mesmerize and hypnotize were the album's that came out during my parents divorce, when I found a friend who was a trouble maker I could call brother and finally did the things regular teens did, though not to any extremes. They were the album's that came out when my dad shot himself and I was left to a mother who was acting more and more like a teen everyday. I think as far as messages go the first three albums were the best, as far as great music and entertainment the last two were best. I liked both solo careers, but Daron seems shady to me, where as Serj is very straight forward. I notice a lot of people just taking Darons word for it without bothering to watch what Serj has to say, a homicide detective once told me "first to offer an alibi unsolicited, usually guilty."
Daron seems to be "more extreme" and "Bad Boy". He also, at least used, much drugs if I'm not wrong.
Serj has very much mellowed, maybe that's why he doesn't want to make SOAD-style music anymore.
Without Daron, I cannot see there being SOAD. Without Serj, it may be possible, but very difficult and it wouldn't be the same anymore...
I'll guess we just have to wait and see, what happens...

It's not like it's never been done successfully by other bands in the past. Serj definitely has a unique vocal style that would be a challenge to find elsewhere but it is what it is and if he's not interested then goodbye

True scars maybe good but at the end of the day people know "System of a down" they want System of a down not scars. Just get a new singer and keep the band name. Otherwise it's just good music not getting recognized because of a different band name.

Maybe us fans need to hit Serj up on twitter, facebook, instagram etc and tell him how much we miss hearing new music from SOAD and maybe he'll see how much it means to us fans and maybe he'll have a change of heart and make this new album happen.
Theres not a lot of SOAD fans left that care about them anymore as it is. 200,000 people watched this video. That is almost a year old. I just ran across this video today 8 months after the making. Serj, never go back to SOAD that time has come and gone. Keep doing you and Daron, you keep doing you.
